I am so glad I got to hear Shaka (RIP) back in the day in south London, 1 turntable on a thick piece of sponge. Ears ringing the next day while eating dinner.
Sounds like a particularly murderous session down in that famous basement!!! I'm so glad i stumbled across this upload and found Mr Bosman. Give thanks for the upoad Igthered. The first Mr Bossman piece is the legendary Gunsmoke/Gussie Clarke mix... only Shaka held this. Unusual for Shaka to drop this cut as first verse (probably tired after a big town hall dance earlier that evening :-). For anyone interested in UK soundsystem history, it was this cut of Bossman that by popular demand gave Shaka the 1980 Gold Cup @ Acton Town Hall. Sadly the judges (Rodigan, Steve Barnard + Count Shelley) chose to award the cup to Sir Coxsone ( admittedly he unleashed "5-man army" on the night and that certainly caused major reactions!!). But, when all was said and done, if I were Lloydie Coxsone, I would have humbled myself and given the cup to Shaka as it was so evident that the majority favoured Shaka on the night, particularly for the Mr Bossman cuts but also Give I Power/Johnny Clarke which led to the wildest mass skankdown I have ever witnessed in a dance. Soferno B and Fatman Hi-Fi were the other cup finalists. Fatman arrived late and the hall and foyer were so rammed he was unable to get his sound in and string up. Soferno B were just out of their depth imho. Serious runnings for true.
Rus Irani - Great story for real. These were the days when as a teen I used to sneak out to dances arriving early with friends watching the sounds string up. Loved the music so much that I put down my schoolbooks and studied dub instead. Ears ringing the next day after listening to Shaka :)
Raal367 - Wonder if a time machine could ever be invented to take me back to a Shaka session ? With the internet, drones, etc who knows but maybe not in my lifetime
