After watching at least 40-50 videos (2 Minute and others), feels like this is the one that finally broke through to me and now I can identify what’s wrong in all of my own videos. The drill at the end was worth it all by itself. Thanks as always for sharing!
Showing the desired movement of the racquet using the on screen drawing with the green circles and yellow arrows is simply an unbelievable way of teaching body movements. Your work shows us how so many people misinterpret tennis movements. Thank you for doing such an incredible detailed explanation.
I have to add this: the way you explain things, step by step and by drawing on the screen, makes it so effective and easy to follow. Serously, this is one of the best instructional videos I have ever seen in any domain, not only in tennis.
The elbows exercise at end of video shows how to get a proper racquet drop. Tod is the best explanation that I have seen among all internet tennis instructors.
This is exactly the biomechanical problem that i have. Racket behind head diagonally and unable to drop further. Habit of years doing it wrong. Partly due to shoulder mobility but worked with bands to make it more flexible. Your video comparison is excellent and very helpful to see the movements required to fix the racket path and elbow route. Keep up the good work coach. 😊
this video is just what I need as a struggling beginner unable to get or learn the correct service motion. I pray I will be able to come back here one day, hopefully soon in the future, and say I’ve made a breakthrough because of the fundamentals explained here so clearly and brilliantly!!
Ok. My name is Roly Gardner and I serve like this guy. A weird turn of events. I happened to video myself serving before I saw this vid. I felt like I was serving well and was winning tournament matches. All good. Until I saw this guy and thought who this is how I serve. Long story short I started to adopt this routine and wow! More power more control more everything. I am a big advocate of online training but this is the bet correction ever. Thank you sooooo much it has changed my game. I am beating guys way ove my classement. Can't praise you enough man. Cheers!
Well done.Very clearly explained.Having developed 3 US Open jr champions including current WTA top 100 player as well as dozens of nationally ranked juniors and ATP players you have done a great job here.
Thanks for this. I went and practised this on the courts and it all clicked. I always had a confusion on the backswing. Now hopefully it works in the matches 😁
Wow!! I will most definitely try this today or tomorrow. At 13:50, I strongly believe that this is what I'm doing wrong: my elbow is not coming forward and it sometimes causes pain in my wrist. I will most definitely practice this drill with the elbow and ball.
Dear Ryan, wonderful as usual. I like the most the elbow exercise with the ball! So important. That`s makes to hit upwards as well. Regards from your fan from Hamburg. Oliver
Sensacional este vídeo. Conteúdo muito bem desenvolvido, com didática, paciência e autoridade de quem realmente sabe e gosta de ensinar. Já estou aqui em Casa treinando os movimentos. Muito obrigado!
Very clear explanation. What I see Lucas's. On dominant hand ends behind his back instead of the right arm pit or close to the right part of the chest.
Great explanation of the drop. Trunk begins forward rotation initiating elbow action, it appears. Wrist always loose creating a "cocked" supination looks like. How would best describe the position of the racquet face at the end of the drop?
Thank you so much! This is the best compendium on the serve I've ever seen. By the way, what racket weight and string tension do you like to use? I've never heard you talk about it.
can you please explain the time units, are they in hundredths of a second or in seconds? Sorry I don't know English correctly. Very valuable your content!!!, I congratulate you!!!!
Nice job, Ryan. Right to left is a major. misconception. From Lucas's video it's towards the front of the court. From yours it's front to back (behind the head of the server). Well, everything is relative but this video is a big step forward..
Hey jack. I’m actually halfway done with your video. Coming very very soon my friend. Thanks for your patience. I’m getting a lot of videos sent my way. Haha. Thanks!!
First time understanding that. Could you do another one explaining the proper loading of the legs while you do this motion? I would really like to hear your take on leg loading on the serve.
Pistol Pete doesn’t violate any serve rules. And he’s actually my favorite player of all time. People who struggle serving look on YT for ways to improve. And people who struggle serving don’t improve when trying to serve like Sampras. Think of it this way…a surgeon’s job is to fix broken arms and then put a cast on it to help it heal. That doesn’t mean that surgeons think EVERYONE should walk around with casts on their arms all the time or that if someone doesn’t have a cast on their arm that they a violating a rule. The cast is ONLY for people with broken arms. My instruction is for people who have broken serves. Sampras’ serve wasn’t broken, so no need to make his serve different.
@@2MinuteTennis thanks for the reply. He's my favorite of all time too. Went back and watched some of his serve videos. I see what you mean. Again, appreciate the videos!
Excellent instruction, Ryan! But don’t some pros pass the racket head behind their head and not over their head and still bring their elbow forward? Thank you Ryan!😎
so can we say that the elbow leads and drives the forward motion of the serve? does shoulder rotation, like in a throwing motion, ever come into play or is it just elbow drive that's key?
Elbow and racket switching positions. Do you create the switch by leading with the elbow coming forward or leading with the racket arm circling over the head (knocking off the party hat) causing the elbow to come forward?
Thanks Ryan. Is catching the ball with the elbow at the 3oclock position just a beginners step to actually catching it at the 12 o’clock for the ideal racket drop? Happy Holidays.
Hi Ryan, thanks for this great video. You point out the tip of the racquet should be pointing to the right side with the face closed. From another recent tip of yours I gather it's better for the tip to be pointing down with the wrist loose. Both scenarios I suppose are ok? Also could you pls. clarify where the racquet should be pointing during the trophy position? Different pros seem to have slight nuances in their trophy position - some have the racquet more vertical or strings facing the right side, some slighty tilted forward and strings facing down, etc. Is one technically better than the other or is this just a preference?
What is your opinion about the timing the elbow goes forward? I have learned that at first the elbow stays at his place when the racket is moving over the birthday head so there is a stretch (it gives a nice feeling) in your shoulder for maximum power.
Foot placement and ball toss. If you toos the ball too far out then you have to move your feet and reach for it messing up your body position for optimal serve
My racquet goes over my hand rather than in. In shadow swings without a ball i can correct it but not when a ball and impact serve are at play. Been trying for years, still not successful. Maybe very strong muscle memory in my right arm from playing cricket.
Amazing video! Tomorrow im going to practice this!!! I hope one day y can send you a video of my terrible serve and see it on this channel (sorry for my inglish but im from chile) thank you!!! 😁
In summary elbow forward and up. The rest can be more flexible.or les perfect. Remember that the next step is more important....how to.hit the ball to.send it to the opppnent square above the net....)
Good instruction but something very obvious was not addressed... His wrist is locked out at address and he needs to choke down on the handle so that some flash is hanging below the end of the racket which will allow the wrist to free up. It is evident that his wrist is locked the whole time through the swing which is not allowing any snap.
@@2MinuteTennis it appears that holding the racquet towards the right side of the body with strings facing down and from that position moving the racquet in a circular motion aiming to knock the birthday hat … usually in the professional circuit players will be in that power position (interpretation of trophy IMO) before hitting the ball
Asking the server to pay attention to where the racquet tip should move confuses the learner. This way, the learner will often to use his/her arm to manipulate the racquet so that its tip will follow the correct path. Instead, we should ask the the learner to concentrate his/her big muscle, like the core, hips and shoulders, making sure he/she rotate back his/her body first to store energy and then rotate forward to hit the ball, with the arm and hand relaxed, then the tip of the racquet will automatically to follow the correct path, described in this video. In other words, the correct racquet tip path is the result of the correct body rotation and arm/hand relaxation, not our effort target.

Very very thank you. I have seen this video quite several times. Now I am understanding the path of this swing.
Excellent video. Discusses & offers solutions to very common habits in players' serve. Thank you!

Great Video, Thanks.
Great drill, having fun with the party hat, it works different muscles, so I have a few sore muscles. Du Québec, merci🤗
Excelent ! Thanks from Brazil !
Great video thank you
this is really helpful especially the elbow part. I'll try and film my serve one day and send it to you :)
Great information
the GOOD of videos! the best of best x ever
Excellent information. Would all of that motion be the same for a topspin or slice serve serve also? Thank you.
To an extent. The topspin serve uses less forward elbow movement.
WOW. Thank you so much. It's a really amazing teaching.I think you saved my 5 year lesson money.
This is great... I feel like my serve looks a lot like his and I'm struggling to get the proper elbow drop.. awesome video!

Yes, I thought the elbow remained in the same position until the point where it is knocking off the birthday hat, and then it comes forward and up.
Did you notice the hockey sticks making boundaries?
What would those help with?
Foot placement and ball toss. If you toos the ball too far out then you have to move your feet and reach for it messing up your body position for optimal serve
I have been practicing this serve motion; BUT for some reason I start in a continental grip, BUT end up with a forehand grip. Killing me.
What type of serve are you trying to hit? Flat/slice/topspin?

When the serve ball hits, it always feels like I'm getting hit by a pitch, so my arm hurts. How can I fix this? Thanks.
What about McEnroe. His style is bad according to your instructions?
your time to impact was .57. would you happen to know federer's number?
Federer is around .84

If you have thrown stones or snowballs in your youth, this "racket drop" is an automatic move. You just get a lot more speed with this.

His ball toss is high but he does have better arm extension.
Lucas got no racquet drop but getting the serve into the service box 😮
You are correct.
Hmm, we wouldn't be watching this if Lucas could consistently hit his serves.
Good instruction but something very obvious was not addressed... His wrist is locked out at address and he needs to choke down on the handle so that some flash is hanging below the end of the racket which will allow the wrist to free up. It is evident that his wrist is locked the whole time through the swing which is not allowing any snap.

I didn’t see you in trophy position while trying to knock birthday hat.. I might be missing something here.. appreciate it
Hey thanks for the comments. What is your interpretation of the "trophy position" and what about it am I now doing?
I was looking for a reply on missing trophy position.. trophy position is part of serve fundamentals as far I know..

There are so many different ways the pros serve.
