There are 2 types of garage door springs:
Torsion springs are on a bar above to door and wound up under tension. (see this video to learn how to measure to order the correct size • How To Measure a Garag... )
Extension springs are on the side of the track and stretch out as the door closes. (see our video on how to determine what size you need)

Hey man, a suggestion for a new video. Make one where you have different things to watch out for and recognize that happen in repair/maintenance. Like not bending bending the track back after replacing the rollers, or having too much tension on the springs, or being unsafe when relieving spring tensions, etc.

Does the weight rating of the extension springs matter? Like can't I just go buy the springs rated the highest (140) and it'll all be the same? I have no idea what mine are. They're all black I think but they're really old so the color may have worn off.

No the door will not balance properly. You will need to weigh the door. +-6 lbs is the margin of error.

@@diygaragedoorparts8206 What ended up happening was I looked on the other side of the garage, and it appeared that the springs on that side had been changed before, because they had red colored ends (150 weight). Unfortunately, my local stores did not have 150 in stock.
I spoke with Lowes live chat at like 2 AM and some woman, I assume from India, said it doesn't matter how far over I go, as long as they are at least the weight of the door, despite me reading otherwise on the internet. So i ended up going with 160s. It's been about 5 days, and nothing bad has happened yet, but maybe over time.

@@diygaragedoorparts8206 Well I oiled mine and gave them one more rotation on each side since the door was heavy to lift by hand. I used your video initially to order some 3-4yrs ago. I believe they are worn out. the left spring (while on the ladder looking at the door from inside) has red paint on it. I believe it's .225 but I forgot the length. It was something odd liek 28.5 maybe. But how can I find the length without undoing the tension on the springs?

@@johnames6430 you can just subtract 2- 2.5" off of the tensioned length and it will we about right
