    Yes, I miss this car. Brought a brand new one, Black in 1983. At the time it was one of the best out there. It was so nice in fact, that some one stole it from a parked garage.

    such fucking professional film production. Great camera work. I love how they make it seem like it's a static shot or something but then suddenly the car drives away or the camera pans out and its all one shot. You just don't see this sort of camera work these days.

    The 80's and 90's were such a whirlwind of advances in pretty much all aspects of motoring. Even though we started at pretty much ground zero in 1980, I'm still glad I was around for it. Thanks Motorweek for sharing your well documented experiences of it all be it American, European, or Asian.

    The beginning of Toyota's most glorious years, 1982-1999. The bubble and post-bubble years. It has been a sleeping pill of a car company since the discontinuation of the MR2 and Celica.

      Jack Lope Toyota's replacement for the celica was the introduction of the Scion TC. FF configuration with similar coupe/liftback styling makes the TC a suitable replacement. I believe (correct me if i am wrong) the FR-S was supposed to be a revival of the FR configuration of the Corolla, hence the "86" badges on the fender vents.

    I owned an ‘84, an ‘85 and an ‘86 throughout my 20’s and I have lots of memories with these cars. I drove them all over the country and since I was a Toyota tech at the time, maintenance and repairs were a walk in the park for me. I have had many cars since then but these will always hold a special place in my heart. Great seeing these period reviews of the classics.

    The non US Supra and the non US Celica hatchback had black plastic air vents (may be not functional but for styling) on the rear fenders, where as the Supra / Celica for the US market had the rear side marker lights. Non US cars also did not have the front orange side marker light as well.

    Minor point.... this Light Blue press car is most definitely a 1982 model year, and an early version at that, measured by the front badge missing the "Celica" name. This would've been most likely filmed in the Fall of 1981... probably right around the inception of MotorWeek.

    • @LTJohn

      Yes. I think it's definitely an 82 because 81 was the last year of the Celica full body..

The natural answer should be “Far better than any of the garbage the big 3 are putting out right now. No one can ever say that the big 3 didn’t have plenty of notice that the Japanese were coming on strong and making great products.

    • @acaaew
      @acaaew 9 років тому +1

      They still do. Even though it doesn't have a Toyota badge the Scion FR-S is very much considered a sports car and there is also a few recent Lexus cars that would be considered as sports cars especially the LFA. It still would be nice if they could introduce a Toyota badged sports car. Something that they could do to bring back either the Celica or Supra name is to take a FR-S and swap its engine out with either the STi or one of the 300+ HP Lexus engines. Going with the STi engine would cost nearly nothing when it comes to engineering since the platform already is running a non FI Impreza engine but a V6 from Lexus with a nice exhaust would sound pretty sweet.

      Andrew Walters lol that is really just a Subaru BRZ dude. They say Toyota helped develop it, but everyone knows that's b.s. Toyota shouldn't hitch a ride on someone else's stuff anyway, they know how to make sporty cars they're just being cheap and lazy. DoubleD 613 is right...

    • @Azul36550
      @Azul36550 9 років тому

      Poop I think you got it backwards. Subaru would never have made the brz. All their cars are awd, except the brz. The car was indeed engineered by toyota with the help of subaru. The only thing really engineered by subaru is the motor, hence why it's a boxer engine. As part of the partnership, subaru was able to make their own version of the car.
