Hello my friend. I'm jealous. Nice and flat, all organized, NO rocks is but a dream. We have 4 acres of ledge, and what isn't ledge is rocks. Even our in ground garden is technically a raised bed. The area where we put our garden in needed 4, 40-50' pines cut down. 20"s +/- in diameter. Set them in a rectangle fashion and filled it with top soil. The rest of the property is mature woods, nothing but shade. So, between the lack of garden soil, lack of full, dawn til dusk direct sunlight, and an abundance of woodland critters one might think we're lucky to grow anything. We planted one bare root apple tree the year we moved in. By Spring there was nothing but a 12" trunk sticking out of the ground. lol Nope, at 70 years old I'm not starting a war with the ground OR the deer. Nicely done Keith Mark and Rosa

Hello, sorry we're not. However, my husband and I picked up this spring, 1 August lady peach tree, 1 golden delicious apple tree, and a pear tree, but I lost the tag . We also picked up 2 brown turkey figs, 2 Reliance seedless grape vines, 3 blueberry bushes, and I misplaced the tags for those also. (lol) And 6 six raspberry bushes and was gifted 20 mature strawberry plants that are now fruiting. We are very happy to find your Channel along with Homestead heart, lead farmer and many more. @@Shannie2003 I know that's right. If it won't grow outside in my zone it's not for me. I grew 2 banana plants all beautiful. Put them in my shed and they still look like they won't make it. Maybe they will but I'm not investing that kind of time just to keep loosing .
Hello from the PNW, Oregon. I'm in the city limits and crammed into this space. Had to put 5 Brooks/Italian plums into 15 ft of space. No other way around. All the farmers are selling out around and they put subdivisions w/ housing into organic plum orchards that were here for ages. Just envying your space.
Thank you for your comment. The Italian Plum I'm hoping does not disappoint. It is such a beautiful plum. This whole thing is a long term investment. We are going to be in serious trouble if our farm lands keep disappearing as they are. All we can do is plant a little at a time to offset what's happening around us. Most people don't have a clue and are unaware of what it is that we are eating.

Every year there always seems to be one row of something that winds up being slightly crooked, or winding. Guess what our friends and neighbors notice first? 20x30' area, 20 varieties of veg and herbs and they notice the crooked row. lol
Lovely to see you busy in the garden. Watching the process, as simple as it may seem, is helpful. Last year when we planted our bare root apple trees we were told to place the graft facing north; is that a guideline you use or is it not necessary?
Not too sure about that because there are many different types of grafts. Bud grafting, Whip and tongue grafting, Approach grafting, Cleft grafting, Bark grafting, Side-veneer graft....
I am glad to see that you grow fruit trees. I am trying my hand at some. I have a couple of fig trees and bought a methely plum tree. It came in pot. I am worried about planting it because it has flowers and some fruit. What do you recommend? Also have you gotten any fruit from yours and if so was it a good and sweet plum? Just so you know the methley grows to about 20 ft.The deer ate both my plum trees last year so the were set back as I say in the video. Hopefully something this year. All my plum trees except the Methley are dwarfed growing on average 1- to 12 feet.
Plums are probably next for me. I followed your soil recipe for blueberries besides having some acidity problems(prob my compost) but my plants are still growing tremendously.

Absolutely! I've been building a UA-cam channel on our journey to self sufficiency, but have not got to planting content yet. I plan on showing how I make a watering system for my raised beds that targets just the roots, how I make the best out of watering by utilizing yard trimmings and natural compost. Unfortunately I won't have a growing season this year with preparing the house to sell and move. I will also use neem powder mixed with mint oil and water in a spray bottle to mist the foliage as a natural pest repellent. I've learned from another wise man a few good tricks😀. Do you allow respectful visitors to make guest appearance on your lovely homestead?

You need to put flowers that bloom early near your plum trees. Sounds like poor pollination. The answer is to hand pollinate. The male has a anthers and the female a stigma. Anthers are sacs at the tips of the stamens in the flower, which are the male parts of the flower, that are filled with pollen. Use a fine, clean paintbrush and brush the pollen from the anthers onto the stigmas of each flower.
Organic fertilizer work because of earthworms and microorganisms in the soil. Your plants can’t uptake nutrients without microbes being eaten by nematodes. The plants feed off the nutrients released in the waste of the earthworms 🪱, nematodes, arthropods and such. Synthetic fertilizers disrupt the cycle. Because the plant is now being provided food from the synthetic it has no reason to release exudates that are exchanged for food so the microbes population drops. Your plant will request the nutrients when allowed to communicate with the biology. The mulch represents fallen leaves. Fungi brake it down and it’s that cycle that ultimately feeds the plant.
I love your ideas. But going to that length of perfection would spoil gardening for me. I guess looking at it after it's done would be gratifying though.
I enjoy the process. As you said, sitting back afterwards and being able to see your thoughts come together is a blessing. Then I share. Faith without work.
My soil isn't the best but I use it by mixing is with beat and compost to say on soil cost. You can reclaim your bad dirt and make it back into soil. I dig out under my raised bed half the height of the bed. Fill the hole with yard debris and place the native soil back into the bottom of the raised bed mixing peat and compost on the bottom half. Put the good stuff on the top.

Can I do a compost in a regular black plastic garbage can with the black top I have a compost bin but the wind is blowing it down and I am finding it in the tree line.
The rootstock is dwarf to reduce the vigor of the scion which is a full size attached tree. The scion that is grafted to the top will out compete the dwarf rootstock if it forms roots. Burying the graft will encourage the more dominate scion to develop roots. You will no longer have a dwarf tree.
If the graft is covered it can send out it's own shoots and take over the grafted tree. The tree that has been grafted on is the plant you are intending to grow, not the original tree that is being used as a foundation for the graft.

We also picked up 2 brown turkey figs, 2 Reliance seedless grape vines, 3 blueberry bushes, and I misplaced the tags for those also. @@Shannie2003 I know that's right. If it won't grow outside in my zone it's not for me. I grew 2 banana plants all beautiful. Put them in my shed and they still look like they won't make it. Maybe they will but I'm not investing that kind of time just to keep loosing .

Hello from the PNW, Oregon. I'm in the city limits and crammed into this space. Had to put 5 Brooks/Italian plums into 15 ft of space. No other way around. All the farmers are selling out around and they put subdivisions w/ housing into organic plum orchards that were here for ages. Just envying your space.
Thank you for your comment. The Italian Plum I'm hoping does not disappoint. It is such a beautiful plum. This whole thing is a long term investment. We are going to be in serious trouble if our farm lands keep disappearing as they are. All we can do is plant a little at a time to offset what's happening around us. Most people don't have a clue and are unaware of what it is that we are eating.

Not too sure about that because there are many different types of grafts. Bud grafting,
Whip and tongue grafting, Approach grafting,
Cleft grafting, Bark grafting, Side-veneer graft....

Just so you know the methley grows to about 20 ft.The deer ate both my plum trees last year so the were set back as I say in the video. Hopefully something this year. All my plum trees except the Methley are dwarfed growing on average 1- to 12 feet.

Absolutely! I've been building a UA-cam channel on our journey to self sufficiency, but have not got to planting content yet. I plan on showing how I make a watering system for my raised beds that targets just the roots, how I make the best out of watering by utilizing yard trimmings and natural compost. Unfortunately I won't have a growing season this year with preparing the house to sell and move. I will also use neem powder mixed with mint oil and water in a spray bottle to mist the foliage as a natural pest repellent. I've learned from another wise man a few good tricks😀. Do you allow respectful visitors to make guest appearance on your lovely homestead?

You need to put flowers that bloom early near your plum trees. Sounds like poor pollination. The answer is to hand pollinate. The male has a anthers and the female a stigma. Anthers are sacs at the tips of the stamens in the flower, which are the male parts of the flower, that are filled with pollen. Use a fine, clean paintbrush and brush the pollen from the anthers onto the stigmas of each flower.
❓ I've been looking for an answer maybe you have. How good bad or not does natural organic fertilizers affect the worms?
Organic fertilizer work because of earthworms and microorganisms in the soil. Your plants can’t uptake nutrients without microbes being eaten by nematodes. The plants feed off the nutrients released in the waste of the earthworms 🪱, nematodes, arthropods and such. Synthetic fertilizers disrupt the cycle. Because the plant is now being provided food from the synthetic it has no reason to release exudates that are exchanged for food so the microbes population drops. Your plant will request the nutrients when allowed to communicate with the biology. The mulch represents fallen leaves. Fungi brake it down and it’s that cycle that ultimately feeds the plant.

How do I prepare the natural soil after I’ve found out that the entire housing subdivision was built on a landfill
My soil isn't the best but I use it by mixing is with beat and compost to say on soil cost. You can reclaim your bad dirt and make it back into soil. I dig out under my raised bed half the height of the bed. Fill the hole with yard debris and place the native soil back into the bottom of the raised bed mixing peat and compost on the bottom half. Put the good stuff on the top.

What's the deal about not covering the graft?
The rootstock is dwarf to reduce the vigor of the scion which is a full size attached tree. The scion that is grafted to the top will out compete the dwarf rootstock if it forms roots. Burying the graft will encourage the more dominate scion to develop roots. You will no longer have a dwarf tree.
If the graft is covered it can send out it's own shoots and take over the grafted tree. The tree that has been grafted on is the plant you are intending to grow, not the original tree that is being used as a foundation for the graft.
