Wow!!!! What a helpful video, thank you so much. I am a single lady taking care of a farm and 28 acres and I couldn't for the life of me get my hustler running and tried your advice, before buying parts. Your advice worked perfect now the mower is running. Thank again !!
Thank you. This was a helpful video with thorough explanation. You might want to consider telling viewers what the problem is at the beginning, then go into the thorough explanation. That way, if someone already understands a lot of this, they can quickly know they should check their safety switch connectors. Thanks for taking the time to be helpful.
I personally enjoyed the thorough explanation of the electrical system. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this video. Hopefully my mower is starting without having to bypass the solenoid tomorrow!
Excellent! Same problem with my 2016 Raptor Hustler Zero Turn. Removed the seat safety switch; dirty as hell. The other two safety switches were dirty as well. Cleaned them all with parts cleaner. Also, cleaned the key switch. I did lightly sand some of the connections. Fifteen minutes later I turned the key and started cutting the grass! FYI - on the 2016 Raptor there isn't a red light (the one that dims in the video). I checked the voltages after cleaning the connections; all good after cleaning. In addition, I did buy a new battery given the one on it was 5 years old. Battery cost $20 at Walmart: EverStart Lead Acid Lawn & Garden Battery, Group Size U1 (12 Volt/230 CCA) - I was a little concerned with the 230 CCA rating but it was worth a shot at $20 (core returned, no core charge). It works fine for my 2016 Hustler. Cranks right up! Thanks again for posting your video. You're awesome!
This was my issue! I just pulled those safety connections for the arms and they were dirty. I cleaned them out with a metal pick. Put the connections back on and it fired right up! Great video sir! Thanks a lot for the help.
Yup, I am having the SAME issue with my 2005 FastTrak 54". I will try this out as my wife and I like to mow the yard and like a reliable start!! You two did a great job at explaining it. Well done!!
we've had this about a month now and there are no complaints. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend some of the decals are a little crooked; i guess the decal guy was having an off day. it came on a crate and took about 30 minutes to assemble, then about another 30 to install the bagger. it works great and i cannot foresee any big problems coming up. it is a sturdy, usa built product. update: the belt-drive clutch is still grabby, but i guess that is the nature of the device. as the literature advises be very careful on slopes or uneven surfaces-it can be very tippy.
The video helped me because it helped me realize all 3 of the safety switches must work correctly or the mower won’t crank. I found the wires broken to one of my handle switches that must me engaged for it to crank. Thanks for the video
This has driven me CRAZY! After I watched the video I went out to my mower and wiggled the connectors at the safety switch and bam she fired right up. Thanks.
I just have to tell yall , thank you so much for this video. I finally got my mower running again thanks to you. good ol metal nail file did the trick. God bless yall
You guys just saved me a HUGE amount of checking and work. Second switch I worked on cured the problem. And I’m going to see if I can get seven years out of my battery!😀 Thanks, again, from Kansas City, MO!👍
Checked all switches, they were all good. Would bump the solenoid with screwdriver with key in on position and it starts right up. Checked ignition switch it was good. Come to find our my son turn the key to hard and twisted the key. Put spare key in and it fired right up. Hope this helps someone that was having same problem as I had!
guess the bent key didnt go in far enough to make a connection? ive never heard of a slightly bent key preventing a start.. although a very bent key i could see of not going in far enough and hinder the proper function of the ignition switch itself.. irregardless its good info ro know.. cause me keys on my belt key ring do snag from time to time and actually my 4 wheeeler key got slightly bent but doesnt hinder starting ability presently
Thank you guys! Fixed my Hustler Fastrak Z mower!!! Also saved me a lot of money and time, I was getting ready to pull the starter and solenoid and replace them. Had it fixed 15 minutes after watching your video.
Wow that was awesom ,I'm having that problem right now ,thanks so much that's how everything should be explained for the average joes like my self thank you so much for taking the time sir you have an awesome Dad may God bless y'all
I was about to unbolt the motor to gain access to the starter on my 2010 Super Z, but after I saw your video, I checked the safety switches. The left side control lever switch was bad. Bypassed the switch with a wire and it fired right up. Another thing I noticed is the switch position can be adjusted to achieve proper operation by loosening the mounting bolts.
Gents thanks for the info. I’m having this issue right now with a battery less than 4 months old I’m going to check all connections tomorrow I bet this is it. I appreciate ya!
I had the same no crank problem on my Hustler Fastrak. You are correct that the cause of the problem is excessive resistance in the circuit between the battery and the starter. My solution is to cut the start wire inside the engine bay and install a relay at the end of that wire. In other words, the original start wire now picks up an auxiliary relay coil positive terminal. Add battery negative to the other side of the relay coil. Then run battery positive to one side of the relay contact (using number 12 wire) and run the other side of the relay contact to the starter contactor terminal. You don't have to do anything to any of the safety switches this way. Starts every time.
GOOD TUTORIAL VIDEO! I HAVE A 1 YR OLD HUSTLER "DASH" (34" DECK) MOWER...WITH ONLY 30 HOURS OR SO ON IT. IT STARTS AFTER SEVERAL+ TRIES. IT CLICKS EACH TIME I ATTEMPT TO START IT AND EITHER PARTIALLY CATCHES OR DOES CATCH AND FULLY ENGAGE THE STARTER. MY HUSTLER DEALER SAID IT'S MOST LIKELY THE SELENOID AND I COULD EITHER BRING THE WHOLE MOWER TO THEM...OR JUST TAKE THE SELENOID OFF MYSELF...AND THEY WOULD SWITCH IT OUT W/A NEW ONE. AFTER WATCHING THIS VIDEO...IT MAY BE THE CONNECTIONS. THANKS!!!
I had my battery tested and it showed weak, so I replaced it. Still wouldn't start. I watched your video and cleaned the contacts on the seat safety connection and the brake safety switches.. No luck. the starter switch had two connections. I cleaned one, no luck. I cleaned the second one and VOILA! There was a lot of debris and mud from the back wheel. A design flaw. Thank you for the video!
clean the safety switch one on each handle and under the seat with a thin fine file or fine piece of sand paper not too big where it spreads the contacts..
The video helped me because it helped me realize all 3 of the safety switches must work correctly or the mower won’t crank. I found the wires broken to one of my handle switches that must me engaged for it to crank. Thanks for the video
Thank you! This was helpful . identifying the wiring schematic color change saved me a little aggravation and likely saved some time. Haha I only got 9 years out of my battery .
Glad ya found it helpful.. that dealership wiring harness throws the owners manual schematic right out the window..lol and 9 years on a battery has got to be a world record, haha!!
Glad you think so..)) hope it helped... initially thought it was the starting relay.. replaced it cause the mower is 10 years old and it was the original one.. that didnt work.. so my dad went to testing each connecting point.. versus part replacing roulette, and just cleaning the safety switch connections , bamm back in business
What do think about cleaning these connections and putting dielectric grease on them? It states "Use on electrical connections to waterproof and prevent flashover and corrosion". Seems like this would help keep anything from getting into the connection.
after cleaning the connections , it would no doubt help to prevent water and dirt and moisture from getting in and causing metal on metal corrosion, where as its extremely dusty up under there and if mow wet or heavy dewed grass moisture gets up under the seat,, every preventative measure you can do will no doubt be a positive. this particular mower went 10 years with no failure to crank other than the battery, which was replaced. and the original batteyr lasted 7 years in and of it self, which was impressive for a mower battery life.
@@ohboyoutdoors1833 I'm on my 3rd battery since the original (replaced 14 months after purchase.) It started clicking, but would start after a few attempts. Stayed that way for 4 more years so I accepted it. Year 5 it started getting worse and worse especially when hot. Locked up completely. No click unless PTO button engaged. (Click from transmission) I checked and cleaned all of the ignition and safety switches I could locate. No help. Replaced solenoid. No help. Dealer was of little help over the phone without being able to see and test. No help. Tech said Raptors need high CA batteries. Replaced battery. (430 CA.) No help. No response from starter with direct contact to poles from hot jumper cables. I've bought but haven't replaced the starter. $70.00. Your vid shows I missed the two connections under the seat from the battery. That may prevent me from replacing an additional part I don't need. Great instructional video that proves, "A country boy can survive." - Hank Williams Jr. Now I can go back to looking for a vid about replacing the starter, which is what I was doing when I found this one...
Thanks guys, that was really helpful....I have a Hustler Fastrak and I'm having pretty much the same issue right now as I type this. For what it's worth, I'm from eastern KY and don't mind the country accent cause I speak it too. Understood you just fine. Thanks again!
2014 Raptor SD turn start switch and CLICK! Good video tho not always loose or corroded wire the problem tho all related. There is no light on my control panel & could tell the click was coming from the relay switch between switch and starter that's mounted to the frame inside battery box area against the crossbeam. Changing out the relay switch cost of $12.00 fixed. For info purposes, looking at the replacement part, positions of connectors & model # was same & it had same location for electrical connections tho the mounting arrangement bolt holes were turned at a different angle, yet it worked as it should. Only electrical problem I've had with this mower other than changing out the original battery.
Good troubleshooting I agree with you 100%. Even if you had found just one thing wrong right away you did the right thing by checking and doing the preventive maintenance as you did on the complete system. With the age and environment this and a lot of machines work in you save yourself a lot of future problems, down time and money. And to others who don't agree I say do it your way and if first you don't succeed quit no sense in making a damn fool out of yourself ! Lol.
There is a lot of good info in this video but as a former Hustler dealer I need to refute one misleading statement: All of the safety switches, relays and wiring are installed at the factory! Operator presence switches are never installed after the fact. Also this problem of the solenoid clicking has been an almost exclusive problem with the Honda engines as the Honda solenoid is extremely sensitive to low voltage.
If the mower is already running (mid mow). Would this issue or a week battery kill the mower? Or would it still run like an old car when you push start it. Mine quit in the field I was cutting, light comes on, hear a click but not turning over.

Cut the tip of it off and he squeezed a little grease in the each one of those wire connectors not a whole lot just enough to get a little on it that's after you scraped native make sure that it gets contact close everything up and you should be good to go. Another thing just because the ignition switch you turn it on and it clicks does not necessarily mean that damn thing is working. Replace the ignition switch and your problem will be solved instead of going all through the relays and the wiring and stuff. Also your PTO wiring is hooked up to the ignition switch you have to bypass that one or at least they did on my lawn mower in order for the mower deck clutch to engage the belts system.
