Have you given up on the Fuji XF10 - I've watched your past videos and currently debating between the XF10 and GRII as an out and about with the kids etc. pocketable camera.
@@chrismacdonald.6295 Expensive as to what in comparison? Did you see what the GR 2 cost at launch? I think for what you're getting it's priced just about right, of course wait a bit for the price will definitely be discounted
Love your videos. Definitely inspiration for me to push this camera beyond just Street photography. It takes great landscapes and with its leaf shutter, experimenting with flash for portraits is a great adventure
@@jeevang7853 first of all a smartphone image quality from color to dynamic range can't not compare to that of a GR. Secondly you do not have the same physical controls which are geared towards photography as you do with a GR not to mention it has leaf shutter. And I'll leave it at that because it's obvious you've never held or used one to make such and peculiar argument. Smartphone cameras are getting there but it boils down to physics and until you can fit a APS-C se sensor into a smart phone then we can talk comparison of between the two.
Nice well thought out video!! Now that the GRiii is out are you going to get it or keep using your GRii? Do you think the GRiii is worth $500 more than the GRii? Best of luck in your photography journey. Duane
I'm just confused, now. In the video about the FUJIFILM xf10, you said that camera is better than this Ricoh GR II. Now, you said the Ricoh GR III is better... And I'm about to buy the new GR III (because I don't have any of these 3)....
When you look at Eric's history, he is prone to making contradictory statements, makes assumptions based on personal fantasy, and justifies his snap decisions with flawed reasoning.
I have just bought a Grii and I'm loving the freedom it's giving me. I considered waiting for the GRiii but the deal breaker for me was when I heard that it wouldn't have a built-in flash. Putting an external flash on or near the new camera would take away its USP for me (small, discreet, unobtrusive). I'm sure the new sensor and moderate increase in megapixels will be an advantage but I don't feel that I really need those advantages of this type of street camera and I don't feel they were worth an extra £300 of my hard earned cash. So, I'm sticking with my GRii for 'Street' and using my Fujifilm XT2 and amazing Fujinon lenses when I want ultimate quality and don't need such a discrete camera. Quick note to Ricoh, if/when you bring out a GRiv, please put a small inbuilt flash back on the camera and keep the price low otherwise it just becomes another £1000 camera fighting in a busy market place.
I personally believe that it is not worth it to go to the iii. I like the in-camera flash for one. Then, I have been shooting since the film days, so, in-camera stabilizations is no big deal. And the difference between the 16 and the 24 sensor, if you are going to blow up your shots BIG, will make a difference. If not, the 16 APS-C is more than enough. And then, it is a considerable difference in price. My 2 cents!
Hi Eric I have owned the Ricoh GR it's a great camera. Your right about the build quality, that's what put me off buying another. Your daily philosophy is inspiring, your years ahead. Hope you get some great shots in Mexico.
Hello and thank you for your video. I ordered the GRII and a VELLO screen protector. I noticed a lot of cracks in yours. Seems that you have a screen protector also!
My GR stopped working, too. And before that, I had to glue the rubber grip thing back down a couple times. So yeah, the build quality isn't the best, and you do have to take care of them a little better than maybe you're used to with other cameras like a beefy DSLR. Can't beat the IQ for the size, though, and I do want another one.
I recently did a presentation on travel in the Galapagos and a couple other South American venues. I went back and re-edited some shots from Ecuador taken on my GRii, and I was stunned at how sharp the images shot in RAW were. Books and travel over gear! Thanks, Eric (alumni of a 2015 EK workshop in SF)
Also still love my gr II, but the built in flash has stopped working and there is dust on the sensor issue. Had it cleaned but it will still come back so I have given up on the dust issue. But I still love the camera!!
For what it's worth - all those menu functions/color preset functions are available in the original GR as well. Ricoh has alwasy been fantastic about supplying firmware updates that bring past models in line (as much as possible) with current gen updates.
RICOH MAFIA RIDE OR DIE 4-EVA. Seriously, pre-ordered GRIII. Flash would have been so great but plan to use FlashQ Q20II flash with it & hand hold flash. Tiny transmitter is great, off center flash opens up some creative options at the expense of mega quick flash pop-up. one advantage of GR I'm finding is the one hand operation given I had shoulder surgery 4 weeks ago (rotator cuff) & only have use of one arm for next 3-5 months. This is also why I am not joining you in Viet Nam, total bummer. Take care friends.
If you want ultimate image quality in your street photography, get the GFX50R or any other digital medium format. No BS about it. What is a little weight and bulk when the images you get are going to BLOW the shit of your brain. You're my inspiration.
@@joeltunnah True again, but sometimes I use flash on Ricoh to give me that "retro analog vibe" direct from the pocket without the additional equipment. Quick and dirty :)
Excellent video. I have been shooting with my GRii and it is addictive. Having used PENTAX for years, this camera has inspired me to go further and explore. Thank you for your video! And, no, I am not getting the iii. No flash to begin with.
I wouldn't buy a compact camera without a flash. Thats why i was extremely disappointed when the Ricoh GRiii came out without one. To me, its a philosophically incomplete camera.
Apparently the GR3 battery has a slightly more power. However the GR3 has a touch screen & also, an image stabilization unit working away inside. These are two things that drain the battery faster..
Thanks for clearing that up. This was definitely a useful comment and Eric Kim definitely did not see that his screen protector was broken. Upvote for being super duper helpful 👍🏻
The best camera with terrible quality control, always breaking and the pop up flash is probably the most useful part of this camera... What? #clickbait
Joe Lopez, Eric has made about 30 videos over the years about his love affair with the GR II. It’s not clickbait. And as he has said repeatedly, there is no perfect camera.
"Ricoh GR version two....Ricoh GR version two....Ricoh GR version two....Ricoh GR version two....Ricoh GR version two...." - OMG!!!!! Just call it a GR2! And what happened to the Fuji XF10? I think you'd find a richer life with more gratitude if you stuck to one opinion instead of being so flaky. :)
What did you film this video with? Looks great.

That's my same question...
is yours the 10 or the 16mp?
I am a GR ambassador and absolutely love the GRIII! Will you be getting this camera? I made a video about it if you’re interested.
It’s too expensive. At that price, they should of added weather sealing. Then, it would of been the ultimate street camera.

small and discrete is how i like it
Just used my friend’s GR ii for a 1 day shoot. Great insights. But i already bought my olympus omd
I agree that removing the flash from Ricoh takes away from your creative palette and that was a big part of Ricoh gr II.
True, but you can put a tiny wireless Lightpix FlashQ trigger on it. Off camera flash looks 1000 times better anyway.
