One skill i have to add is win condition recognition. Its not something you can study but over time you will work on it . Firstly improving can vary from reviewing your own games , watching someone else play , someone analysing your games or a combination of those . Then in the game you have to implement what you have learned and always make a plan .

A good strategy I was just taught was to not allow your opponent to farm too much energy even if it means you need to stop attacking so that your opponent can’t farm you down.
An example of this is… I just had a match a little while ago so I’ll tell exactly what I did.
In my match I lead with Dewgong and my opponent’s lead was TalonFlame. My opponent immediately swaps out Talon and into Lanturn… and I swap into Gloom but not until I gained enough energy for an icy wind with my Dewgong. I wanted to have the icy wind ready for Talonflame if it comes back in… I wanted to be ahead on energy. Also I was hoping to catch a charge move on my Gloom because I didn’t want too much health on it when I knockout the Lanturn so as to not give the Talonflame too much time to build up energy for its charge move because then Talon would be able to threaten my back line.
So once I got enough energy on my Dewgong for an Icy Wind I swapped it out and into gloom and caught the Thunderbolt. I then Razor Leaf’d it down to about about 1 HP then stopped attacking. lol my opponent stopped as well and I knew exactly what they were trying to do so I didn’t want to knockout the Lanturn when I still had a little over half my health left because then my opponent could come in and farm down Gloom without throwing a charge.
I had enough energy for one Sludge Bomb and would have never made it to another charge move and my opponent would be so far ahead with energy. So I was trying to win the mid game matchup without using a shield and without having too much health to allow the Talonflame to farm. So we just waited the switch clock out and then I took out the Lanturn and in came the Talon. I immediately throw the Sludge Bomb which my opponent shielded then I dipped out and swapped into Whiscash. I now had shield advantage and didn’t allow my opponent to get ahead on energy with a big lead. I ended up winning the match. My opponent’s other Pokemon was a Skarmory btw. I also used Gloom again at the very end to catch a Brave Bird from the Skarmory which was clutch and definitely played a factor in winning. If I would have played the mid game matchup like I have in the past by just taking out the Lanturn too quickly with a lot of HP on my Gloom I would have lost the match because I would have given my opponent an opportunity to get a big lead on energy for their Talonflame and also I would not have had the opportunity to use Gloom later for a sacrifice swap to catch a charge move.
So not allowing your opponent to bait out a Pokemon that they will be able to farm down easily for a lot of energy. I’ve lost so many matches in the past for giving my opponent the opportunity to farm down my Pokemon with a hard counter because they baited me to bring it in.

Been a Daxi lurker for a while and I've been rooting for you to hit Legend when you started taking GBL more seriously. Congrats on Legend, and I really appreciate the bit at the end about taking responsibility. I've done some coaching with some local players and friends in PVP and this bit has been the hardest to get those people to adopt, and I'm really glad that you took the time to add this at the end of your video.
This is a well put together video and is very good for beginners. A lot of videos that I was watching when learning PVP years ago do the same thing but many of them required a bit more advanced understanding of mechanics in order to fully take away the concept. This video does a really good job introducing the concept and includes an infographic that's easy to understand. I hope this gets a lot of people more interested in PVP!
Keep it up, and I'm glad to have been around to see your growth in PVP, and I'm excited for the future of your channel.

    • @anjinmiura6708
      @anjinmiura6708 3 місяці тому +1

That "taking responsibility" is a load of crap. It's fine to say "oh, I guessed wrong... I didn't expect them to use or have that move" All well and good. But when you get the hard counter in front and then hard countered after that? There's no coming back from that. And since we have NO idea what they are using (There is no "show 6 pick 3" as there should be) then there's not even a valid reason to take full responsibility. Niantic support actually told me the more you win the more the difficulty is raised. That confused me because at the time, I thought it was about the skill of the players. Well it is about that but it's also about matching you against "more difficult teams" because at the higher ranks, we ALL already do the things he says in this video. We count, we time the charged moves and we try to anticipate their teams. We also use energy management and more advanced tricks he didn't mention. There are some clever swaps techniques out there and I don't take responsibility for that though I give credit to the player for it. I don't BLAME NIANTIC when I see it's the skill of the player that won out. But this charge of "take responsibility" is EXACTLY "Don't blame Niantic!" And that's BS!
The moment he said that was the moment I realized this is just another shill video. We already know Niantic sends out gift boxes and other things out to youtubers who "give them love." This video smells EXACTLY like that.

Thank you very much Dax! I have downloaded all your fantastic charged moved timing files. I think that the timing for a 5 turn move vs a 4 turn move should be 3, 7, 11, .. (e.g. 3*5=15 & 4*4=16). You get it, I think it is just a technical error in your file.

Great video, Daxi, for breaking down this for those who blame the algorithm, which I sometimes do myself when too heated or are not reaching their full potential in PVP. I also suggest a video breakdown when you have a bad lead and know what to do in those situations to still win matchups that are not in your favor at the start of the match.
Yes, you are correct. Sometimes, you just lose some match-ups, not in your favor. I still, every once in a while, blame the algorithm, and it's just my fault altogether or not my fault on team reading.

  • @Billerd346
    @Billerd346 5 місяців тому +5

One thing to add is I think when making a team you don’t want your lead Pokémon to be double weak to a type basically if your grass and ice and a fire type comes in with a fire move at the start off the battle you basically have to switch out as they’ll kill you in like a couple of fast moves which puts you in a really bad spot for the rest of the battle so for your lead I recommend only using a Pokémon with one type so you don’t have to switch out at the start.

worth noting that sometimes its worth using bad timing so you throw your move before your opponent can throw theirs! Like in 2 vs 3, often times ill throw after 2 (or 3 if I win CMP) to make it so I throw before the opponent can reach and throw their charge move

When it comes to team reading, there are multiple things to consider:
    * What does their pooemon team have in common? Are they made of a specific type? Do they share specific weaknesses. I.e Galar Stunfisk and Venusaur are both weak to fire - could this mean they have a suitable answer against a fire type in the back?
    * Are the opponents staying in a neutral to negative matchuo for far too long? This indicates the current pokemon you are using can core break them in the back (meaning your pokemon is also a good answer to one or maybe both pokemon in the back)
The problem with content creator teams is once they are released to the public, almost all battlers would have taken into note how they function and 9/10 gets countered very quickly because they gained the knowledge to plan ahead of time.
Keeping up with the meta is important, but also identifying key features of an opponents team (types, weaknesses of team cores, timing of shields for certain pokemon) can help identify potential win conditions to take advantage of.
As someone who's hit Legend - it all comes down to learning how to run a team to the core; mastering how to play a specific way throught good and bad match ups, evaulating your play style, self discilpine, and patience.

Being a competitive player for like 12 years (on showdown and every gen game) this PVP defies Pokemon logic so that was my hardest point. Equake hitting Flying types, being able to body slam a Ghost type lol it makes no sense
BUT I started PVP on here last season and almost hit expert. I feel counting is the single most important. Also, the meta being so stale; you don’t have a lot to memorize lmao Medicham? Ice Punch and Psychic (most likely)
Azu? Ice Beam and Play Rough
Lant? Surf and Thunderbolt lmao like everyone uses the same stuff and the same moves so it’s so easy to predict.
Spicy picks aren’t very popular either because of how rarely they can take a set of 5 in a row

This perfectly illustrates the problem with pvp. This is a game designed for children and casual players. Counting should not determine success, since the target demo won’t be bothered to learn this. It’s why ELO has to go.

Are you referring to children whose parents buy them cell phones?

    • @lDoVahKiiN

My brother in christ, first off, counting alone is by no means the only part of winning in pvp.
Secondly, the game is meant for children yes, but pokemon released in 1996 so alot of the children that used to play are now all adults. And if you think pokemon go pvp is complicated, just go take a look at pvp in the main series games
(Though i agree GBL is trash, just not for the reasons you mentioned)

Why not? Some kids want to see how their skills improve over time. Why not giving dedicated players and casual players a same chance. U can do pvp and decide yourself how far you want to reach it

You don’t cater to the minority. If people want a sweaty game, they can go play valo.

I gotta say that you definitely will learn a lot through experience. I am by no means a master in th GBL but compared to When I first started GBL I absolutely hated it. However I continued to keep learning what moves a pokemon should be running and what pokemon are most recommended/ used so that I could better myself. After a lot of trial and error I now enjoy the GBL. Of course I still take loses but I don’t hate. It came down to me learning if and when to block and also when to use my own charge moves

I’ve caught many moves by just estimating how much energy my opponent has 😂 probably better to learn the counts. This was very helpful!

Such a helpful video. Thanks Dax!!!
Wondering if you could do another video going a bit deeper into the counting moves? I honestly struggle to see the animation and know what to count sometime. I think my question is - how did you get good at the actual counting part?

I am decently good in pvp catching a lot charged moves and making some smp sac swaps ,but i am just here to finally take the time to learn charged move timing, because you can't trow on alignement against the buffed incernate

One thing I'd like to touch on is perhaps explaining the benefits of "counting",
eg knowing your enemy hasn't reached X move, or catching moves

The only problem with this is that pvp is rock scissors paper... look at anyones stats they never have 80%+ wins :) its like poker machines and gambling which is a SET UP!

Wow, great video! More info and instruction than I've ever seen on this subject. BUT, to much for me. Pokemon GO (and other Pokemon games) already take up to much space in my head. I only do PVP for events and tasks. But I will keep these tips in mind, and hopefully do a little better. Thank you so much for the great resources, though. :)

Very nice tutorial 👌 for a guy who used to clown me on live battle days for making accurate suggestions 😅 like ul battles 1 time you had a steel type and they swapped in tina. You swapped to your tina😂 when you could have taken multiple hits first and build up all kinds of energy. Clowned me on live stream. For shame😂
