Everybody (and I mean EVERYBODY ) here in Pennsylvania was rooting for Smarty to win the Derby. He was OUR horse! He came oh so close to winning the Triple Crown, bless his heart! I love ya, Smarty!
Glad to see the Smarty Jones fans here that have taken the time to watch this. Thanks for posting. Am pulling to see American Pharoah win the Triple Crown but Smarty Jones will always be my favorite horse of all time. He too, like Alecramsay1227, made me fall in love with this awesome sport.
If anyone ever sees this all I want to say is that I’m proud of smarty Jones and it makes me smile and my father Mario Arriaga the groom walking him many people don’t care about him but he always makes me smile when I see him.
thanks you SO MUCH. My first Kentucky Derby ever :) I was 13 at that time.....time has passed way too fast since that. Smarty made me fall in love with horse racing :)
I know this is Smarty Jones' show and I was always such a big fan but this video reminds me how much I loved Lion Heart too. He just ran his heart out everytime and was no slouch himself.
Always loved Durkin’s call at the top of the stretch. Can’t ever touch the 87 BCC, but this was niiiice. Love Smarty. Had a chance to attend the Preakness and he was awesome. So easy. Very very heartbroken it didn’t happen for him at Belmont.
Funny how the owner whose horse cost Smarty the Triple Crown opens the program. Oh, if only we had known then. ;) It was an exciting run that year. Everyone I knew was rooting for Smarty. It reached past the usual fans that year.
Stewart Elliott this is Barry Shulman remember me I'm proud of you I was good friends with Rudy Biaze and went to Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Florida in 1984 and bumped into a trainer who Denise Boudreau who owned a farm with Roland Hopkins , sad she passed away . I worked on the backside at Gulfstream park and met RUDY TURCOTTE the brother of Rony Turcotte me and Rudy hung out together after the morning and went to the Elloree training center in south Carolina in 1983 I weighed about 119 pounds . I've had many relationships with woman and in Lynnfield ma where I grew up .when I went to the north Andover riding academy and went into horse shows and jumped fences I won 3 ribbons. Your friend Barry Shulman. I know you won't probably get this message but I got email on October 4 2014 to go to Suffolk Downs and the ride didn't come .I was sad because I know you were there . I was sad I have a autoimmune illness heredetory illness that my grandfather had. Barry Shulman.
i grew up going to gulfstream park with my dad i remember that day that friends lake won the derby and the concerts there where the best its a shame they built a casino and all those shopping centers it takes away all the nostalgia from the track
What a cool story all the way around for the Smarty Jones win, from undefeated horse to a 1st time KD start for oft overlooked jock Stewart Elliott and then a 1st time entrance for the trainer at the KD... and then to see the owner on the defib have to sit down and catch his breath at the end of the race... I mean how's there not a movie about Smarty yet?
For the courtesy of you and others who view this, I have for you the lyrics for "My Old Kentucky Home." They are below if you want to read them while listening or sing along. It occurs at the 43:56 mark. The sun shines bright on My Old Kentucky Home, 'tis Summer, the people are gay; The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom, while the birds make music all the day. The young folks roll on the little cabin floor, all merry, all happy and bright; By'n by hard times come a-knocking at the door, then My Old Kentucky Home, good night! Weep no more, my lady! O, weep no more today! We will sing one song for My Old Kentucky Home, for My Old Kentucky home far away.
Smarty Jones was one darn good race horse. ( Off topic ) I wonder if the owner's will give another trainer Baffert's horse's for the 2022, 2023 ( hopefully, a bunch more year's) KY. Derby ? Spank, spank.
Thanks much for posting. Can you tell me where you uploaded this from? My oldest son is in part of the video and I would like to try to figure out how to get a digital copy of the part he is in.... Thanks
I think smarty had a special love for stewart Elliot..check out 18:42 where smarty is upset and shaking his head then the second stewart puts his hand on smartys forehead he calms right down instantly....I tell you a horse will run to parts unknown for Love....
I became friends with Stu Elliot back in the 90's and a nicer guy I have never met ! A gentleman and a good bass angler ! I enjoyed knowing Stu and his beautiful family ! Penn Warner Club isn't the same w/o you Stu !
The owners, Mr.and Mrs. Chapman. I believe they said during thr broadcast that Servis and Elliott got 10%. I don't know if they got $500,000 each or had to split it?
I never get tired of watching this. I just love this horse.

I love the coverage of the Derby from this era. Classy not trashy. What has happened to the media recently is very sad.
I really miss this one but also ABC Sports coverage 1975-2000
@Danny Hilding
Yes indeed...
I Love You Smarty Jones....you are right up there with my favorite Seattle Slew....!!!!
💙 Smarty Jones won the 130th Kentucky Derby 20 years ago today on May 1 2004
Look at the acceleration of Smarty Jones as they enter the stretch. Gives me goosebumps.
I know this is Smarty Jones' show and I was always such a big fan but this video reminds me how much I loved Lion Heart too. He just ran his heart out everytime and was no slouch himself.
I loved him too.
Wow..this one brought tears to my eyes...thank you for posting!
This race was just a miracle in the making and Smarty Jones is just the most amazing horse
my mom feel in love with Smarty and it was so great to see her excitement that whole season nd she was heartbroken when he lost
1 of my favorite horse races.
I never wanted a horse to win the triple crown as much as i wanted Smarty Jones to win.
Always loved Durkin’s call at the top of the stretch. Can’t ever touch the 87 BCC, but this was niiiice.

Smarty Jones had to be at his best that day because Lion Heart was a very good horse and ran an extraordinary race himself.
Nice!!!!!!

It would be better if you don't put the winners name on the title.
Didn't Pollard's Vision have a missing eye? God bless him.
tapit ....i think he pulled up
Who gets the $5m bonus Durkan mentions? The Jock, Elliott?

Good Colt
