Can you drive a 4WD truck up to the Ahuriri Base hut? Would be nice to start there and get further up the valley. I am coming over in March of 2023 and this looks like beautiful country without a lot of people.
Yes you can get up to Ahuriri Base Hut with a 4wd or awd suv so long as you have a bit of clearance.Though it may of been washed out over winter I haven't been up this season, but last season I was able to get there in my Mitsubishi Outlander on road tyres with no issue. I will let you know how the road is when I next head up there probably in January. The last time I went all the way up to top hut in a day but didn't take the camera its a nice spot I have a big multi-day trip planned for the area if I get enough time this season.
Quick update about the road as was up there yesterday. The first river fan is pretty rough but passable with a bit of maneuvering with a Mitsubishi outlander PHEV on muddies however the road is very slippery after this first fan with some thin mud (similar to the 2wd portion but worse) might be a tad hard without the mud tires. And the river fan just before road end was not passable with my car due to clearance, able to get to Ahuriri base hut and short walk to the end of the road. @Jeffmell-ot2yz hope you had a good trip to NZ
Hi Konservation I can't seem to access this account. Yeah when we went up there at this time the set was up about halfway up the road. We knew it was for something but couldn't find any information it was all very secretive. Figured it out after the first trailer for Mulan. Matt
