  • A sports/track and field game where you compete against each other in 6 track and field events. Only 2 players could compete simultaneously so on 3 and 4-player games, players had to wait their turn. An extra life is awarded for every 100,000 points acquired. Each player must qualify in the current event before they can move on to the next. Hit the 2 run buttons to build up speed and use action button to jump or throw. The events are :
100M DASH - Run as fast as possible.
LONG JUMP - Run to the take-off board then choose angle of jump (42 is optimal).
JAVELIN - Run to the line then choose angle of throw (42 is optimal).
110M HURDLES - Run and time jumps over the hurdles.
HAMMER THROW - As the athlete spins faster and faster, time release of hammer and angle of throw (45 is optimal).
HIGH JUMP - The athlete will run to the bar, just as he reaches it, use Action button to start the jump and hold down the action button to reduce the angle of climb, i.e. you start going straight up at 90 degrees if you tap the button just once. Use run buttons while in the air to gain extra height.
Note: Used the fast cheat on the 110 meter hurdle and the high jump level.

I remember the arcade, but it does have voice acting in the original arcade version. The NES version that I have does not have any voices until "Track & Field 2" came along. The arcade version was from 1983, the NES version was from 1987. The arcade version has 5 events, the NES version has 8, but they added 3 new events like Skeet Shooting, Triple Jump and Archery. All three of them are from another arcade game "Hyper Sports" and eliminated the Hammer Throw, Weight Lifting and Pole Vault. This was probably an early Konami sports game.

After the pencil cheat got popular, they came up the the side covers for the buttons on the arcade machines. So we evolved and went to plastic combs with all the teeth cut out. All you had were the two large ends slapping the buttons and setting those 90m world records.

Arcade machines were retrofitted with cups around the run buttons since people were cheating. Hold a comb in your left hand, your pinky and ring fingers on top, the others beneath. Left side is then held down onto the left run button. If you then hit the right side of the comb to hit the right run button and let go, your left pinky/ring fingers snap it back down on the left button. Two presses for one action.

An aluminum pushrod yields the best result, but it isn't without pain on your middle finger where you lever the pushrod. I.E. Left hand pinky and ring on top of the rod then the rod goes over the middle finger and the pointer finger goes on top to balance it then you chop on the right of the rod with your right hand. When the right length is used it is on both outside edges of the buttons. You should be able to max out the speed on every event. Pro tip put a band aid on your middle finger it cuts down on the pain at least a little.

When I first played this game, it was ultra hard for me to control. When no one is playing the game, it gets really noisy. Especially if you hear the chime signal go off, for the Olympic athlete to perform; in the sport event. 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🚶
