4l80e full manual with no computer

- This video discusses using a 4l80e transmission without computer control. Note that the video says the transmission will bolt in - what is meant is that it will bolt to the engine. The drive shaft was shortened and a crossmember was fabricated out of a piece of c-channel steel. Some 2 inch diameter pipe was cut to length and used as spacers for the fabricated crossmember to give the proper height under the rear of the transmission.
MegaShift has a pinout for the transmission connector:

For first gear, you ring this here doorbell button. Then when you’re ready for second gear, you gotta pull this ceiling fan string. Then for third gear, ya gotta press the lever down on this 1956 bread toaster. And for the overdrive lockup, you screw in this here lightbulb.
You just described my ratrod switch plans lol
Love this comment 😂
LMAO
That's how you insure noone can drive that thing

The best anti theft security system i have ever seen.
He needs to set up a camera in this thing and drop it in a shitty neighborhood, the footage of iced up mellenials jumping into this thing and trying to steal it would be awesome.

I can't believe I just watched you shift a truck with light switches. I LOVE IT!!!
I can see him trying to sell this on Craigslist lmao.
Him: "It's an automatic transmission, but you have to shift it manually using light switches."
Potential buyer: "Uhhh, I'll be in touch."
When the grid goes down this man will be king over all of us.
lol....
F!@# eh?! I LOL'd 10 minutes into this. I cannot do this to my truck.

Yes ;)

This prob the best GM product on the road ever. I hate a GM, but maybe not this one here.
Brock Garrison how do I put a 4l60e in my 1992 Chevy Silverado. Which has a 700 r4. Can it be done. By the way crazy but awesome.
Where's the switch for the ceiling fan?
In my other car.
On the column you gotta but it in drive for its fastest setting
That truck looks like it has been through a few tweakers.
Maybe just one. those hose light switches though fml
Looks stock to me. Pretty sure the boat steering wheel/no horn/no door panel/cracked windshield/no heat/no gas, volt, temp, speedo gauge package/no radio/no dash pad/no shift lever/zip tie upgrade were all stock factory options.
Yea it's a special 1979 Copo c30.......it's the weight distribution package

Your awesome This is beyond what words can explain.. not many people have this level of intelligence and the satisfaction from accomplishments like this are second to none.
Your the last type of person that will be stuck on road begging people for help to fix you things or help you get to garage.
The super cool thing is, you could fit a lightning rod shifter with microswitches, and duplicate exactly what you're doing on the dash. Thank you for this, super cool to see how you figured it out. Memories of shifting a big truck and splitting the gears with the shifter.
You don't have to worry about someone driving off in it LOL they would be like what the hell is all the light switches for!!
scott dale lol no joke.. I drive old stuff that could be stolen easy enuf so I put a inline switch under the dash I use in the city as a extra precaution to it being stolen but this tops that ten fold!! 😆 very MAD MAX but even I learn from these hacky videos

So let me guess, you wasted 9 mins of your life to post this, lol.
Tnks.
Mark, we understand details are too much for you. This video was a discussion, not just video showing it working, the man took time to really explain what he did.
But looking at your channel it's really obvious why you got so upset, you can't get this many views on all your videos combined.
Mark Brown that’s funny 😂😂😂😂

This is basically how manual mode paddle shifters work i love it!
There ain't one single thing wrong with this setup, man. I like how you built it how you did and it's as simplistic as it is. I've been wanting to do a newer year model trans swap for a while now but I haven't wanted to spend the crazy amount of money on all the "standalone blah blah blahs". I'm just a workin man with bills to pay that loves to make the things I have better with little money invested in them. Good job, bud, I likey.
I'm just starring at the steering column just swinging around.
I think you should create a "paddle shift" style system on the steering wheel. Using your forefingers to press paddles to upshift and downshift, with paddles or buttons on both sides of steering wheel, or mod a paddle system from a late model car. I can see your system turned into a serious performance quick shifting system, exactly like paddle shifters.
I am more confused now than i was before watching this video.
@Adventure Ticket OKAY GRAMMAR NAZI
I wrote the how to article on this a couple years ago. I did it with a 4L60e when my ecm fried out. Didn't use light switches though.
I used the neutral safety switch on the shift detent, a single momentary toggle switch, and a b&m quick silver ratchet shifter. Had all 5 gears (4 forward plus reverse) and torque converter lockup. And didn't have to flip light switches.
Technically what you end up with is an analog computer.
I guess I'm just retarded I don't understand how you making shift have a 4 L 80 I don't want three switches in it would like to have one and just run the shifter
i would love more information on how to do this the right way without thousands in electronics. trying to make my late 80s non fuel injected 383 work with a 4l60e automatic
i would love more information
which article id love to read it
@@williamallen8913 u can buy stand alone 4l60 and 80 controllers i kno u said u didnt wanna spend a million dollars but im pretty sure theyre pretty affordable, especially if u get one used off ebay
Perfect explanation for simple trans shifting, there are cheap kits online premade for this and have an adjustable Line Pressure knob just for a couple bills.
It says in the Haynes Manual that when you remove a manual transmission to put in an automatic that you have to wear a dress or the transmission will not go in
I have heard this, can't say i'd make the swap to find out lol
If you are using the Haynes Manual chances are you already got step 1 done
This is one of the coolest thing I have seen in quite some time!
Thanks so much. Answered a lot of questions I have about how the 4L80e works. I love the ingenuity.
Dan your the effing man, I got the caprice up and running w/4l60, I'll try and post a response video. the only difference is the solenoid shift sequence is different. I owe you a case of beer.

transgo sells a vacuum modulator to replaces the epc solenoid. aka force motor or line pressure solenoid. Then there is using the 1995 tbi chevy pcm with modded prom.
Love it Dan! Keep it up.
BTW for anyone interested, I usually use a '90 Suburban cluster when I can find one, since its electronic and keeps my dash looking factory. But until I find one, I always use a droid like you have done here Dan.

Fuck off sis
Careful flatlander, last time I got one of those tetanus shots I had several seizures over the course of 3-4 years afterward.
Patrick Baptist Details? I thought about getting a booster because I’m 21 and it’s been some time since I got my first one as a kid and work with rusty vehicles up here in the northeast.
I wouldn't. What details are you wanting from me exactly?
I've been cut up good working on vehicles and structure repairs/home repairs ect. Never seen a need to get a vaccine.
I've got 5 children and not a one has ever been vaccinated for anything.
My kids don't get sick and don't have any health problems, worst it ever gets for them is they might run a low grade fever for a day or 2 max once a year.
Not sure what your views are in life, but alot of vaccines contain products made from aborted fetus, as well as organs of people even. Stuff is straight up poison, insane to treat something that hasn't happened by making your body more toxic, all for the sake of nothing but fear and ignorance.
The solenoids need to be grounded with the switches. The transmission needs a 12v+ line that feeds it when the ignition is turned on (Pin E on the transmission connector). Solenoid A is Pin A on the transmission connector. This is grounded through one of the switches. Solenoid B is Pin B on the connector, also grounded through a switch. The torque converter lockup is Pin S, and it also needs to be grounded through a switch. I do not have any resistors connected at all.
im diggin the light switches
@billylancer - grounding both solenoid isn't enough to make the gear selector lever command first gear (it is the only gear that has this limitation). For first gear SOL-A has to be grounded but SOL-B has to be open.
You can overcome this if you understand something: there are pins on the transmission connector that go to ground depending in what gear the selector level is on. Knowing this you can hardwire SOL-B to be off when the selector is in physically in first gear. - Dan
So how sol a has 3 wires you need to twist to ground. Rite so is the 3rd wire the line pressure switch.. that wire should be alone and always grounded or twisted up with sol a on the switch.. this is where i am at in my swap.. 85 k30 dually 6.2l diesel
I'm not sure what is cooler...you figured all this out, or you use household light switches to shift gears. Amazing.
So if you wanted to, you could leave the switches in 4th, and then use the shifter. That's a pretty neat setup.
Just saved your video bro...gonna look into this next year when i get into my old burban....makes an automatic not so boring...firm shifts is way to go...slow shifts burning clutches..man i bet you'll get a helluva lot more life outa that tranny than with a computer..and that being said your doing a better job than it...truly awesome man...thanks for your engineering skills and sharing this to us all!!!
Love it man!!!! you have done a badass job and took time to explain it...have got me wanting to do this to an older suburban i have.
And to all you haters making shitty comments about this....yall are the ones who don't own tools much less have any kind of engineering mindset to accomplish this...so leave this man alone, its folks like him and me and us that fix YOUR neglected rides!!!!
Might I recommend that if you want to use engine braking, instead of using the gear shift selector, just use the converter lockup, because that is what the shift lever is doing, just making the converter lockup more aggressive and engage until a much lower RPM.
Quit hating people. I rather watch this. Than watch the rich people channel that won't give you the time of the day.

loud? I didn't even realize your truck was running until you started moving.
@dougjones - yes I think you could do this. Four things I would be concerned with: trans temp if the converter is unlocked, lugging the engine, computer throwing codes, and warranty. But if you have those bases covered and are adventurous I think you could do it. You may also be able to have someone tune that behavior out alltogether in the computer. - Dan
This is where the lexus LFA got the idea for the paddle shift mechanism!! Love your video man, I need to do this to my truck asap!! 😂😂😂😂
I know those dash gauges aren't the greatest, but this brings a whole new level of crazy. They sell a stand alone computer for that trans. But we wouldn't have seen the Lowes home improvement model.
This just gave me a huge headache, in a good way, EXCELLENT Tutorial Sir.
This was a tremendous hack to watch. Sir, I extend my thanks and congratulations.
Great explanations, love the "engineering", fun video for us who love tinkering!!
Useful information - especially during the apocalypse.
I use a forced 4 shift box, its basically the same concept except allows a tiptronic or paddle shift, just electronic control of the solenoids instead of the light switches but your version is free 😁
If you buy the full manual conversion that plugs into the trans, all you do is connect power. It gives you full manual control and full line pressure, all the time. It does not require a computer. But where ever the shifter is that’s the gear you get. If you start in drive, you are starting in 4th gear. If you slam it into first gear at 80, that’s where it’s going. These controllers can be bought for around $200.
You can do that for free with a pigtail from the boneyard. Just need a switched power source on a fuse.
the phone for a Speedo is a good idea tho and it even looks pretty cool not sure how accurate it is but it's better then not knowing.. I've had a few v8 builds no Speedo I just got a general idea where 25 45 and 55 was by rpms
how did you wire it, I want to replicate it with a little less dodgy ness.
Put some dimmer switches in!
That made my night, thank you
Especially the PWM type
He should upgrade to this new age and a get a google mini to turn the switches on and off😂

😄😆😎
No, this is just using the wires coming out of the tranny. You don't need a manual control for that, you just need to have a wiring diagram so you can control the proper solenoid and provide power to the transmission. You could do exactly what I did for the cost of some wire and the light switches.
I don't know what it is, but there is something beautiful about that interior.
look at the mess of wiring and those household light switches!! BAD ASS
Thanks Dan for the 4l60E info. May have questions later.
The phone mounted on dash was the most expensive part of the build. House switches....nice touch.
This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you
I have a Hurst shifter hooked to the light switches in my house.
Mann I hate a GM product but I really enjoyed watching this video, you did a good job of explaining what you did, though I will never try this I still liked it.
Me too.....this guy is pretty smart and frugal at the same time, I'd do it too, if I had too!!
Believe it or not the house switches might be a smarter way to go they will last 100x longer.
Love the custom dash......at night the Sparks and rough edges have to really b a plus Dang
Dan thanks for making the vid, very informative.
I like the house switches on the dash I'm a electric and I have seen home products used for a lot of things they were not made for but never seen them used for togle switch
LOVE IT .
love the interior .
Proves you don't always need to have the factory stuff .👍👍👍👍
That is super cool. Reverse engineering at its finest.
You literally shifted the truck. That's really cool.
Though it may have rougher shifts the transmission is stronger with full line pressure all the time
Thanks for your reply. As long as the PCM doesn't throw the trans into limp mode I can deal with the CEL. I will try it with TCC and Sol B switches and see how the PCM likes it. If I am lucky the CEL might reset itself when I set the switches back to normal PCM control. I will try it and post the results.
Wow. Its nice to know that something can be done without the computer.
Good job. Whatever it takes to make things work.
On my previous post: "VM sensor" should be "VR sensor"
Sir, i am fucking impressed !
Soo now that ive learned all of this.i can transfer this gained knowledge into my own build project.
hello,
a gps works well as a speedo, and of course, is a gps too.
you can find em all day long for 30 to 40 on craigslist.
Thanks man! My kind of stuff......I will be messing with my 4l80e soon. I am going to try some things on the test stand first and see what it does.
You should use a rheostat for the line pressure control
Cheap DC PWM variable controller capable of direct output that's at least 25% higher then what the 'niods max draw (just dont get something silly, be trying to adjust micro pots with a tiny flathead while driving) I would look for one with with readout would be cooler but really you would want to set the top and bottom ranges using pressure gauge to see what pressure reading are at about 1200 and try to keep the fluid temp as close to 180-200F as you can while drive
Peter Dy or he could just swap that shit out with a trans go vacuum modulator. run steel hose thru the dipstick tube (hole punch) then run rubber hose to the intake manifold. controls line pressure just like the old dinosaur th400
^ This is probably the easiest. Cheap PWM would be interesting as well. I don't have the truck anymore or I would try it.
Man, that truck looks awesome to drive! Total control over gear shifts and engine braking. Even the lockup! That's totally cool man. I'm running the stock TH350C in my truck. I've never tried gearing down to reduce the speed. Was worried I would hurt my trans. Though I have had to sit in one gear going downhill. It definitely reduces brake usage! But I don't think I would want to drive at highway speeds and drop it into first. It sure seems fun to shift like you do in that truck. But it would probably get old soon if your driving it every day. Anyways brother, Decent work man! Worth a subscribe I think! Keep updating man! Good stuff!
Thanks! It gets the job done, it is still in use the truck on a regular basis for things. It's a great work truck, I love old trucks, they are worth repairing and keeping. It's a vehicle that a shade tree mechanic can work on and keep for a very long time. Today's vehicles are awesome, but they are not as friendly when it comes to certain repairs. Heaven forbid in a newer vehicle you end up with a wiring issue buried somewhere in the middle of the engine harness...
Dan Mann Yeah I hear what your saying, totally man! These trucks are great. I can sit in the engine bay while I'm working on the truck. their very easy to work on, parts are cheap and readily available. its great! I love my 82 k1500. It was my grampa's before he died. I'm doing the whole body on it. Box, Doors, Front clip, Cab corners! It was used as a farm truck all its life, in an area that's real moist. So most of those parts are rusted. Plus its got huge dents on the passengers side. I have a feeling someone rolled it on its side while they were 4x4in. But the frame is solid, and the engine only has 107k in miles on it! So overall its Decent! I have a vid of it here on youtube, and I plan on putting more updates up of the trucks current state with in the next couple days. Its almost ready for the new parts..... But yeah man, newer cars are a pain forsure! Way too difficult to work on. Parts cost a crapload. Plus these older trucks can be tuned to perform just as well, if not better then the new ones! Anyways bro, have a good one!
I´d rather you talk to much and be clear than rush through. Light switches are a nice touch lol. Well done. So, when you have all the selenoids on you can basically manually shift up AND down? The full line pressure does no harm does it? The old 700 you couldn't do that as it would also determine shift points of that TV cable. I've got a couple of 4l80's I was considering for a personal project and a customer car. This might well get me over the top.
The cool thing to wire up would be something off the side of the shifter that makes contact with each selenoid switch combination that corresponds with the gear. You follow? That way you basically turn it into an auto box with manual shifting but by the same way the computer would have so no worries. The feel of a manual valve body...
Radesignsproducts.com has just that . Along with line pressure control
I don't know if it could lock up in first, I don't remember. But I'm fairly certain it could in the other gears.
Dan Mann my 03 slivrado in tow mod locks up the coverter on all gears and you can notice the difference, the engine shifts at higher RPM..
Late to the party. But you can't lock converter in 1st with a 80. If I remember right, it uses the fluid from 1st gear to lock the converter.
But 2nd, 3rd, and 4th it can be locked.
@2451star - yes something similar should work on the 4l60e...EXCEPT that I don't think the pins are grounded. Instead I think grounding them does the opposite (or they use 12v?). In one of my original comments in this thread I had some links. One of those links showed the pin-out for the 4l80e, but on a different page that same site has 4l60e info. You will find definitive answers for the 4l60e there. Good luck - Dan
I like an old all steel vehicle, not the weak things of today. This guy's got brains, me too but I have a broken back so I'm usually broke so I look for solutions like this one for my old steel!! I work on and drive stuff just like this here man. Never have to make payments on the old stuff, sure I've had a few newer vehicles in my time and when they quit I always go back to the old GM stuff, always and at that I'm quickly and reliably back on the road for minimum dollars using legit hacks quite similar to this.
Peace!
Why is it that no one has made a shifter that does this more elegantly?
Not everyone is willing to pay $700 for their super awesome TCM.
That rig is one light switch away from spontaneously combusting 😂
I need this in all my vehicles so that no one can drive my car 😂
I've just designed hardware and software to upshift and downshift with 2 pushbuttons like paddle shifters plus a 7 segment led display that shows what gear your in. Got less than 100 bucks in it.
Any weird issues in reverse? Does it downshift without having to actuate the linkage?
Here's how the shifting works:
Sol A: grounded, Sol B: off = First Gear
Sol A: off, Sol B: off = Second Gear
Sol A: off, Sol B: grounded = Third Gear
Sol A: grounded, Sol B: grounded = Fourth Gear
Lockup Solenoid grounded = Lockup active
I put a link to the MSGPIO site in the video description. Open that link and look down at the page towards the bottom and you'll see the connector pin out. Make sure you look at 4l80e connector and not 4l60e.
Good Luck!
I wouldnt normally like to drive automatics but I would drive that automatic!!
I can see if you can't count how many shoe laces you have then this might not be for you but a couple times around the block will make you a driver. I'm not sure what application the truck does (snow plow, log hauler, etc)but thats smoother than I kinda expected ... good job an hey, tell me about lumbar... for fifteen miserable years now
i love them light switches... used them many times over the years and always caught shit for it.
Nice job keeping that truck going.
I think a bird has been trying to build a home on your dash board
I like the manual control. Thinking of doing this with a 5 position selector switch, one switch with 5 positions. I would get confused with 3 switches LOL!
@mightfab - yes I actually have an arduino. I just have to get a circuit to interface a VM sensor (an HEI module can probably do this). I have too many projects. The lt1 and 4l80e are coming out next year to power a 1970 Cutlass. I have an old 1979 Yamaha xs1100 with a MegaSquirt fuel injection system... I'd like to put one of those on the lt1 at some point. The internet=too many fun projects :-)
Probably 8 years too late, but you don't actually have to do any of this. You can ground the solenoid control wires to each other so that the only input you need is 12v power and the shifter itself. That way whatever gear you put the gear lever in is what gear the transmission is in. All you've gotta do is cut up a GM transmission pigtail
Are you sure about that?
“In the absence of the PCM to control solenoid operation, you can use the pressure manifold assembly to substitute the necessary ground signals to energize the solenoids in the proper combination to provide full manual control.”
atracom.blob.core.windows.net/gears/2015/2015-03/2015_3_32.pdf
You need the ground to the solenoid to change based on the gear selector location. You can use the shifting truth table at the beginning of the linked article and wire the pressure manifold switches in a specific way so that the transmission shifts as expected, but you can’t just ground the solenoids to each other in my experience.
@@mannfamilyMI I just did it on my own vehicle with a 4l80e swap. I'd have to look up the pins again or crawl back under the car, but by soldering 3 wires together in one circuit on the pigtail, and 2 wires together in another circuit, you end up with full manual control via the shifter. Then all you have to run is a key switched 12v source via the pink power input wire, and a switched 12v supply to pin S for converter lockup if you're so inclined. There's a tutorial video on it floating around on UA-cam.
@@kylefunston484 yeah you probably connected the pressures manifold switches to the solenoids. But if you ground both solenoids only at the same time your tranny should be in 4th gear. Your original comment made it sound like you could just ground A solenoid to B solenoid and apply power, that would be 3 wires only. I don’t think that would work, and I didn’t want someone to be confused after they tried it and it didn’t work.
Line pressure controlled via pulse width modulation... I don't know much about electronics and programming, but it seems that people are using Arduino's to do this (see the guy who controls an LED light brightness with pwm).
