I agree. If you want to do "live" Veritasium videos, live-stream the recording process, on this channel. Then post the edited and well-produced version on the Veritasium channel proper.
Aditya Khanna I Absolutly second this. If you want more freeform, just post more here on 2v! But please keep up the professionalism too, it helps me clarify my knowledge and explain it to others better. To respond to a different question; Of course there are things I am putting off! There's usually good reason though. I can only balance (and afford) so many things in the present. While doing the Now I think about and hopefully prepare for all that will come Later. Its a pretty decent cycle
Bernie Abraham haha, yeah. Harshly realistic. The people on our screens often seem superhuman; I'm still not entirely convinced that he's not an alien/android from the future/demigod. 😂
I think they are different and I watch both for different reasons, in different mental state. I personally prefer scripted video but i think conversational video are more refreshing, IE it's great but it's not something to do everytime
I like the fact that you have two channels, because I appreciate the careful thought and high standards of your educational videos, but I also like to hear straight from Derek Muller, an individual with spontaneous ideas and flexible opinions, on this channel. I suggest making Veritasium as carefully prepared and crafted as possible, and 2Veritasium as immediate and open as possible.
I like the conversation style. at least in this channel. maybe you can script for the videos in the main channel but I also like these vlog-style videos where you just talk about things
Yeah, both styles have their place. Unscripted videos are a lot longer and harder to get raw facts out of, but they're usually better at getting people to think. I like how on the main channel the videos are sort of a hybrid of the two, he'll ask a question either directed towards you or towards actual people and then explore the common answers.
Even more so, it is because he cares about what he wants to say. Script or no-script, it is the emotion, the passion, the curiosity behind the voice that gives it richness. I see many science videos of qualified people talking about interesting thing with the most monotone, unemotional, scripted voice that I turn it off.
That dilemma is definitely very real and very challenging. We go through it every time we make a video for our channel. It is really valuable to be genuine in videos but still be concise/prepared. Having two channels like Veritasium and 2veritasium also helps.. content fits the context!
Conversational videos have their place, scripted videos have theirs. I think if you're trying to convey some kind of in-depth concept, scripted is the way to go.
Hey man hope you see this and i wanna tell you from some syrian living across the planet that sometimes its hard to figure out your effect on the world, except you can always know that you have a great impact on human life because you push knowledge out and contribute to the betterment of millions. so cheers to you and to everyone like you :D
mike rotch ha! I did not notice that until you pointed it out... Guess he must have filmed that bit another day. He was actually wearing the other outfit at the start too... Just slipped that little encounter in there. Making a point about immediacy I guess, but kinda funny to realise that this video is so edited...
I wondered if anyone would notice. Yeah, I filmed the same ideas over two days. The first day I saw the guy and loved his reaction, but the rest of that clip was more rambly so I just cut it into day 2's recording.
Derek, I go away for Christmas and come back to all this amazing content from you? Thank you for this video- I think it's what I needed to hear. I've been agonising about just starting a script for a video idea I had a week ago. I think I've just got to type it out. For me there is no option to not have a script, but I'm definitely trying to make the whole thing more conversational, and I want to share more of my immediate thoughts by just uploading videos about cool new things that I learnt- rather than just videos I've been planning for about 2 years. Part of the inspiration is seeing your 2veritasium videos actually. I like that you can just switch on a camera and talk (I'm sure you plan at least but), they feel really natural and personal. I'm starting to dislike the sound of people's narrator voice (mine especially)- that voice people suddenly adopt in videos or in my case just whenever I'm teaching. It's so much nicer to hear people tell you interesting things the way your friend might tell you something cool they learnt.
I like showing the professional veritasium videos in science class to help clarify certain subjects to my students. The fact that they are professional, short, concise, to the point makes them perfect. This channel is great for the conversation aspect.
spot on. Just imagine if you didn't make those first few videos cause you didn't think they were good enough, maybe Veritasium wouldn't even exist, and trust me there are a lot of things that don't exist for the same reason, cause people get addicted to procrastination and perfection is the best excuse. In my opinion, I liked your previous videos better ie. when you had lesser preparation and scripting. That is why I prefer UA-cam over Television and I think when you switched over to the other side to make high production quality videos, a lot of the magic and charm of your channel was lost. In any case, all the best, Derek! -Leo from TPSC
i really enjoy having access to both the less and more prepared of your videos. It's really satisfying to watch a video of yours that has a really high standard for accuracy and overall quality but being able to hear you in this format as well makes being a fan much more personal. I think ultimately, it shows when you are making the content that you enjoy making the most and having access to both types is important.
Personally, my favourite videos of yours are the ones where you take a real-life example of problem which entails a scientific property or idea (triangle hole with light, we can't see acceleration, distance between moon and Earth, etc...) and you take it to the public and just ask them "Why?". I feel like it makes those properties or ideas more real and they're just fun, easy watches. Keep up the good work!
You responded to many of my questions and comments in the Live Facebook feed. I loved it. Seems like something worth continuing because it has further encouraged me to go to graduate school. The question for both of us is why consider stopping? From what I experienced your fans will be able to appreciate your experiences and knowledge even more personally when you talk with your audience live. You cared to respond to me personally four time that day, and I've had professors get tired after just a one or two questions. But it is not your patience that makes you great. Compassion is your greatest trait.
I was part of your FB live discussion, and I absolutely loved it. Being able to chat with you in such an easy way while allowing everyone to get a chance to talk was amazing. I also enjoy seeing you just chat to a camera walking down a street, like, this is normal.
Having only recently discovered 2veritasium after having watched Veritasium for HOURS, I wanted to say that I really enjoy these conversational videos just as much as I do the scripted Veritasium ones. I just wanted to thank you for all of your work. It's been both inspirational to see how you're videos have evolved and so very helpful in my own professional & personal growth. Wish you and the other viewers of these videos the best!
I love the conversational style, but I think it fits with THIS channel. Your "main" channel is a deeper, more thorough channel, going into details and subtleties, which scripting makes a nice, beneficial difference.
It is refreshing to watch someone on youtube who has dedicated so much of their time and energy to teach others. You are an inspiration and have such a positive influence on my life. I just want to thank you for the content and i wish you the best of luck in the future.
I'm subscribed to a lot of people so I have to be really picky about what I watch not to waste 2-3 hours a day watching UA-cam. I'm the type of person who knows how to perfectly skip through intros and skip sponsored bits of youtubers I tend to watch a lot, and I'm pretty much always an advocate for more concise videos. That said, you pull this off extremely well, and if I'm not feeling particularly rushed I absolutely love this style of video. You're hard to get bored of.
I'm only a freshman, so I have just started having to read research papers, but what I have found helps me is just reading through each section, or really each paragraph, and write down a quick outline that summarizes what you read. Reading back through what you wrote really helps understand it. Then when you read through the article again it makes a world more sense. Then again, I don't have the most experience with this. That's just what has helped me since I had trouble with that.
I am going to chime in with a similar comment. Summarizing as you go, taking notes and just even taking a couple days to read can help. Often i will read through it once scratching down things i need to take away. Looking stuff up as I go. Then reading it the next day often makes it much more consumable.
What do you mean by long winded? I find that, sadly, there is no shortcut to scientific papers. They are the epitome of research and are quite reserved for those who have been following it for the past 20 years or more. I recently had to read 80+ scientific papers on the discussion of current Metazoan Phylogeny, and after reading the old debates being debunked I felt like I've wasted my time reading the first 20 papers, because over the years a few papers set the bedrock for discussion they revamped the knowledge and were accepted thoroughly. Books aren't kept that way, the most accurate books are lacking 8~10 years of research, in this topic. And that hinders. It would be nice if scientific papers would pop up like Reddit responses, yeah it sounds stupid, but you could follow the responses and debates more accurately over time and get to know what topics winded out or not.
I love the conversational medium of these videos! It gives me time to really think and digest more easily than a rehearsed lecture. Conversation feels much more organic and easy to understand your thought process. Also I have many projects I want to work on that I have put off because I'm worried I won't get it right the first time! A similar problem to what you said you need to be weary of when starting a UA-cam channel.
I think both styles are good. Conversational is more personal, however, it may not be as information dense or concise as scripted. I say do both! Thanks for the vids!
I love these conversational style videos! It reminds me of times I would just walk around with a friend and just muse about random ideas/life. These types of videos feel more personal and it’s interesting to hear and see you in a less scripted manner. But that being said, I also enjoy the high quality scripted videos you have on your main channel too~ To answer your question on procrastination, yeah, I would say I also procrastinate bc I want to do thing perfectly but feel intimidated to even start.. I realize that I also tend to procrastinate bc it feels overwhelming to start big projects, but I find that it can be helpful to scope an idea/project first to make it feel less intimidating and more feasible, so therefore breakdown any procrastination barriers. ^^; As for procrastinating smaller tasks, I just try to tell myself to do it immediately bc actually if I procrastinate short tasks (such as washing dishes or keeping my room organized), it might end up taking even more time in the long run (bc they would get worse/dirtier as time goes on), or the fact that I’m spending all this extra time and energy to have a conversation in my head to complain and justify why I should allow myself to procrastinate, I probably could’ve already finished the task already if I didn’t spend all that extra time resisting it in my head.
I love this channel. I personally enjoy the conversational aspect of it, plus you're actually really good at it. Not many pauses or misspoken words, I think! I agree with what you said about procrastination - there is always this fear of investing all your time and effort into something only to have it flop.
What would be great is a conversational-style video perhaps once a month or week with a quick overview and your comments on any particularly interesting or important science or science-related story during the period it covers. I'm always interested in hearing others thoughts on the long term effects of recent advances and discoveries or how they think modern culture might respond to the sorts of changes new technology might bring about.
I think your current set up works very well. I personally enjoy seeing the very raw and conversational videos on Veritasium2 and then still having the high production, even television level production quality on the main channel. I'd love to see more but I know the good videos and topics take time to develop and plan.
I sense many layers of meaning to this question, some of which you are not conscious of yet. Regarding videos, sure, don't over think them. I see many youtubers fade out with hesitant self doubt when it's not really necessary at all. The fear of erring can easily be mitigated by the willingness to admit mistakes. Never make truth your enemy.
Thanks, Derek - I had to chuckle when you asked if there was something that we had held off on. We live on some land and for the longest time i wanted to seed one of the pastures that was just dirt. i figured that the soil had to be prepared if I wanted a good pasture, but it was about 1/2 acre and that's a lot of preparation when you don't have big equipment, so I put it off - and put it off - for about 3 years. Finally, i realized I wasn't going to ever prepare it, so I just threw out the seed. VOILA! In the spring I had a nice pasture of solid green! Sometimes we just need to DO IT! :-)
I appreciate the humanity captured in a non-scripted video. I like the ability to watch your mind work, as well as having a sort or realism that only comes when something is genuinely real. Plus it's nice to know you and others don't always have their next thoughts prepared ;)
These videos are great. You have such an insightful and intelligent perspective, and I think this channel really accentuates that because of the "rawness" of it.
why is that? don't worry about performance, and when things start on your channel, it won't be perfect even if you tried your damnedest. There are a lot of gaming channels that start out as "ordinary" style with a "flashy" opening and closing scene. I thin Derek made a video on this topic you are talking about. It was when he started doing these vloging type videos. If i find it, i'll post the link here. Also, my point was that you should start it, get some subs, and get some feedback. Check out "Caiyth"s channel and watch her first video that she uploaded. I hope this helps more than not. And good luck with your channel.
+Teddy I hear you! I've got a video, edited and ready to go which I am going to use to start a woodworking channel. It's been 'completed' for over a month now, BUT it's got a few small mistakes and I can't bring myself to upload it. I'm unsure whether to reshoot it (which would probably end up with the original mistakes removed, only to be replaced by new ones). I could probably make it more professional with every take, but then when do you stop? I could be there for 5 years improving it! I could just upload and learn how to make better videos on the fly, all whilst in the public view but as Teddy says "I don't want to put out stuff that sucks". I've seen many bad UA-cam videos and they have you shouting at the monitor and making a mental note never to watch that UA-camr again. I don't want to be that UA-camr. Hmmm...
+EscapeMCP I tend to feel the urge to be preemptively self-deprecating, or intentionally ridiculous, so that I can come to terms with the cringing before posting. It's certainly not right for every style, but you could do the muppets thing of inserting yourself commenting on how badly you flubbed a line. If you do something completely borked in the woodworking, you could keep it in, acknowledge it, and try to figure out where to go from there, like what the Wood-Working for Mere Mortals guy does when things go badly. Best of luck! :) I'm procrastinating on figuring out how to record and edit a cello tutorial for a violin concerto I transcribed for cello... I'm so bad at casually talking to a camera.
Jack Hudler Well, I'm better at having a dialogue with another person than having a monologue at a camera, but that wouldn't quite work for this unless I found someone I could meet regularly with who was interested in learning to play Wieniawski's 2nd violin concerto on cello. It'd be cool if there was such a person, but finding them in a short timeframe would be a long shot. I'll just have to push through cringing at myself and get more practice talking to the camera. :)
I find it difficult to pit the two versions against one another. I love hearing your stream of consciousness. But I also love how detailed your scripted shows are.
You have just stated it out so clearly. I struggle with the same issue. I want to start working out to get more sportive and live a healthier lifestyle, but I find myself procrastinating it. With this conversational video you have made me think and let me dig out the real reason of me procrastinating. Its the feeling of wanting to do it so perfectly, fearing that this moment will screw the oppurtunity of doing it perfect.. So I wait for another moment to come.. actually weird. because its like I wait for something magical to be happening that will make the situation so perfect. That will never happen lol. So just like you I need to do things more immediate! I love your non scripted second channel. it feels so close and personal. I also love your main channel. I watch all your stuff basically and share it with friends ;) Greetings from Amsterdam!
Your kind of videos seem to work best when they're concise. Which means having a fair bit of preplanning. So I hope you prioritise planning over immediacy, to avoid waffling too much.
5:14 is real wisdom on the topic of procrastination. I feel relieved to hear such an explanation for procrastination because I would definitely consider my life to have been negatively affected by procrastination in many ways and for many years. Maybe if I ever see you on my city's streets, I would have the same reaction as that man in Stockholm. Now I see why someone was so inspired to see you on their city's streets and would have such a passionate reaction.
ya know I hate being early because all the comments are just 'im early' 'first' 'not first' 'hi' etc etc jeez people just stop if your going to comment something make it worth while
Well take that time to create your own ideas about what you think of the video. If you immediately go to the comments, you can easily get wrapped up in other people's feelings, but if there aren't any opinions yet, be free to think about what you thought.
Such an underrated channel (and this video as well). I prefer the immediacy, conversational format in this channel, and the scripted one for the primary channel ! Qualify over quantity!
Scripting is a must! You need a train of thought to get from point A to point B. But you also need the liberty to just improvise at a certain point. If you don't want that become a movie actor where you have to do the exact same thing dozens of shots. But here goes the same as with everything in life, find a good balance between Immediacy and Planning. There's nothing wrong with being sporadic every now and then. Same as that there's nothing wrong with planning your life. But you need to balance the two.
I've been putting off my photography a lot because of the exact reasoning you talked about. I keep waiting and hoping that this perfect moment for the perfect picture. This has kept me from being creative like I truly want to be and I believe it's my biggest creative hold-back. I'm super appreciative of this video, hopefully your thoughts will push me to be more creative more often
thank you for all what you sharing with us, this video particularly - i have lost immediacy for reasoning, planning and rational choices, it was one of the worst choices, then chance came there were nothing to support it, because in the moment of immediate intuitive flash of truth i never did what needed to be done and lost it forever. As a new year resolution i want to feel alive again, with all happiness and pains it can bring
These walk and talk videos are perfect to listen to for my own morning walks, before I go to school, to freshen my mind up to start the day with :) Thanks a lot, Veritasium! 8-10 minute videos are perfect for me, because it is not too long, so they would consume too much of my morning, but also not too short, so that you can't get in depth with a certain topic xD
Why is it either or? Just do what ever you like. Nobody's telling you what you allowed to do so do it all. If it works then great, if not then try something else.
i think he feels like he should talk to us about that because we are the viewers. he is not makink the videos for himself and probably don't want to decide something and just expect us to accept. talking makes everything easier. Besides that, some of us may bring something he hadn't thought too since we have different perspectives and expectations.
The conversational style is not better or worse, it is just different. I think through this second style of videos we get to know you as a person better, which in return fuels our interest in the cannel, thus both styles are equally important. Keep it up, you are great and you do everything right.
That guy's reaction was epic. It was as if someone pulled an emergency brake in his brain and everything struggled to get going again. Understandable though
I really appreciate the dual way you have developed. There are the science videos that, while entertaining, educate. Taking time to think through them and make them as precise as possible, that makes for the best type of learning videos. The videos where you speak 'off the cuff' and very freely are a get to know you, that makes the audience get to know, like, and respect you as a person (hopefully). I think both are important aspects, but shouldn't be overlapped. On a personal note, I use your videos to teach people basics. I don't show off the personal and off the cuff videos because I like to stick with the streamlined and well thought out topic(s) at hand. I think of your science videos as just that, science. I think of your personal stuff as you, Derek. Hope this gives you some insight into my thoughts as a viewer. :D
A quality life [for me] is lived through discernment between many variables: work/play, spend/save, talk/listen AND in thr case of the topic of your video: Immediate action AND Delay. You posed a great question. After short meditation on it, I feel the need to reflect on how even that something that seems immediate, even to the person doing the act, usually has a delay mechanism: between the thinking about and the doing! Great video. You've got one new subscriber!
Pol Timmer I feel like he definitely should. It would be really good to be able to do a quick quiz after watching a Veritasium video to make sure I understood the content, maybe get a bit of spaced repetition in there... Perhaps that's not quite as in depth as what you're looking for, but it'd be a start, eh?
Josh Gosh I think what I said still applies, if we take into consideration what Khan Academy covers with their content (Physics, Math, Biology...). Plus a lot of extra. :) :)
Maxander2001 yes, definitely your personal experience. Quizzes, tests, and spaced repetition have significant benefits when it comes to retention, comprehension, and other educational outcomes. Going digging for resources all over the web may suit you, but having a single link to click below a video to get more reliable info and test / review the knowledge we have acquired would be vastly more accessible to the general public. Seeing as part of what Derek is trying to do is make science more accessible, it would make sense for him to consider something like this. He wouldn't have to do it alone, I'm sure there would be plenty of people interested in working behind the scenes on such a project. As Derek has found in his research, giving people the facts isn't enough, you have to show them what they are getting wrong, otherwise they will think they have understood. Cognitive bias and all that jazz.
I really like your video style of just taking a walk and speaking your mind. Perhaps if you feel like you worded something badly then you could make and edit but all in all it is really refreshing to see someone just talking off the top of their head walking through a town. It seems far more sincere than a script and it shows that you really care and are passionate about the subject matter. Great video, keep it up. :)
I was in the middle of scripting my first UA-cam video, on Ideological thought, when i stopped to watch this one. thanks for the input, it makes me feel a little better
I love these vids so much. I think it's good to talk about what's on your mind, even if it is only to yourself. I think that it helps you solve problems and developed your views and opinions.
Thanks for this video, as always! I'm having problems with general consolidation of college work, and with some exams coming up after winter break, and deadlines fast approaching, there is an issue with procrastination. I know myself, I'll "talk the talk but not walk the walk" and I see that as my biggest issue. It's definitely demoralising whenever I stop and realise I'm putting things off, yet I can never seem to bring myself to do them! Hope everyone is having a good holiday season, Hans
David Ouillette There are many interntational shops and companies in Sweden. We Swedes learn english from a very young age and use subtitles instead of dubbing movies, tv, ext.
Thanks. I knew most swedes were taught English. I just did not expect to find it so prevalent. I guess I expected more like Japan where sure they are taught English in school also, but you almost never see it in the streets.
You have hit the nail on the head. I procrastinate all the time due to an illusion of perfection in what I am trying to achieve. I have been wanting to create a channel on virtual reality but have procrastinated all the way though. You have made me realise that its best to do thing at a lower standard then desired, rather than not at all.
Leave the main channel, Veritasium, scripted except for when/if you do live Q&A's, etc, and have 2veritasium being more relaxed and conversational. And also, are you still in Stockholm?
In my case, one reason to procrastinate is that I am a perfectionist and never finish anything to my own satisfaction. That is the reason why I deliberately do not start working on many things, as it would drive me crazy when actually doing them. Immediacy is a nice concept and I see some parallels with spontaneous behavior. Why plan what you do in the weekend in two months in advance, just to experience it not happening at all? Even if things go as planned or expected, what experience can you draw from them? Our anticipation of things itself can be a bigger reward than the things actually happening. And this could be also a part of procrastination, at least in my case it is. About connecting. You cannot simply connect with everybody, or at least not connect the way you would like to. This is natural and perfectly OK, you do not need to feel bad about it. You are just one person and the day is only 24 hours long. I am bit surprised that you post videos on this channel in this time, as I would expect that you enjoy the season and have some time off, spending with your family. PF 2017!
If you mean, "don't do them exclusively," sure. If you mean, "don't do them ever," I'd disagree. There's room for a mix, because you don't have to watch every video he makes.
Agreed. I don't have a lot of free time either, but I love nice long videos when I do have a little time. I'd MUCH prefer two hours of Derek to lots of the movies that come around.
Thank you for another great video! I agree with your idea that the pendulum can certainly swing too far forward or backward when it comes to immediacy. For the past year, I have been growing my small environmental business and I started to realize that I've been putting too much effort and time into just getting things ready. What I mean by that is that I would find myself spending every evening building and tweaking the website over and over and over in an effort to make it absolutely perfect thinking that it would make people immediately understand what I was trying to do with my company. I would also spend countless hours planning and strategizing my marketing and social media tactics thinking that when I finally started to get myself out there it would take off exponentially because I had had things so well planned out. I started to realize I was putting more time into planning and preparing then I was actually doing engaging people's reactions. For the past couple weeks I've really started to try to actually put myself out there, I've been going out and meeting with store owners, talking with customers, and engaging with other Environmental Protection groups. during this time I've actually learned more about myself and realize that I do better interpersonally then I do but behind the facade of a business, I actually really enjoy being able to just talk with people on a one-on-one basis as I'm able to get more ideas, and opportunities for growth. I'm also able to find out what does and does not work and how to better get my message across to people comma and being able to personally interact with people I found also engages people more with what I'm doing. as for your videos, I think I blend works perfectly for you. With your main Channel I always liked watching the scripted videos when they're meant to explain complicated topics like quantum physics comma but I do really enjoy that you mix that up with your second veritasium Channel where it's it feels more like a conversation with you, and we just get to peer into your thoughts at that moment. I think this helps other viewers like me to feel more personally connected to you, other than just a face on the screen. Thank you again!
No no no no....
Veritasium is scripted and professional
2veritasium is conversational and friendly.
That's perfect
+1
Aditya Khanna yes this is how we love it
Yes thats great, he should keep this going
Its a pretty decent cycle
that guys reaction made my day
the conversation style gives you an air of humanity.
Bernie Abraham haha, yeah. Harshly realistic. The people on our screens often seem superhuman; I'm still not entirely convinced that he's not an alien/android from the future/demigod. 😂
Bernie Abraham but they say I need them? 😜
It's impossible not to smile after his reaction after seeing you!
I prefer conversational style. Only by a bit though.
Yonatan24 I know right? that guy almost had an orgasm.
I enjoy the conversational style, This is UA-cam not PBS. :)
I like your content regardless!
cool, you are here!
Uh, dip it! Dip it real good! 😜
+Eemeli Saarelainen Absolutely! Made my first tippie top because of a Veritasium video!
I think they are different and I watch both for different reasons, in different mental state. I personally prefer scripted video but i think conversational video are more refreshing, IE it's great but it's not something to do everytime
i love this channel, i enjoy the friendliness and conversation that goes on.
The immediacy plays well.
What he said.
Adam Spangler has it right on
yah, what he 2said
-I've been thinking about immediacy for months.
Oh, the irony
hahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahaha
I like the conversation style. at least in this channel. maybe you can script for the videos in the main channel but I also like these vlog-style videos where you just talk about things
Eashrak Zubair i agree with this
Much agreed!!!
+1
Even more so, it is because he cares about what he wants to say. Script or no-script, it is the emotion, the passion, the curiosity behind the voice that gives it richness.
I see many science videos of qualified people talking about interesting thing with the most monotone, unemotional, scripted voice that I turn it off.
that guy was about to cry lol I would've done the same
me too thanks
What the fuck.
yeah me aswell , i`d have done the same.
I think I would have the same reaction, if I had met The Veritasium personally! 😀
+HulluHili Kahi cameras with such a big zoom are not invented yet
Аркадий Аркадиевич ouch that hurt really
i`d have done the same .
Hahaha
Sly shirt change at 1:00 is cleverly edited
mike rotch ha! I did not notice that until you pointed it out... Guess he must have filmed that bit another day.
He was actually wearing the other outfit at the start too... Just slipped that little encounter in there. Making a point about immediacy I guess, but kinda funny to realise that this video is so edited...
Hey yeah
Maybe he actually went to lunch with that guy and just edited like he kept walking.
I wondered if anyone would notice. Yeah, I filmed the same ideas over two days. The first day I saw the guy and loved his reaction, but the rest of that clip was more rambly so I just cut it into day 2's recording.
+Veritassium Did you prepared yourself more for the second day?
I think the current setup is pretty much perfect; scripted videos for 1veritasiuam, and vlog-style conversational videos for 2veritasium.
I think ultimately, it shows when you are making the content that you enjoy making the most and having access to both types is important.
being a perfectionist the best advice I ever got was 'don't let perfect be the enemy of good'.
that is such a beautiful phrase that i'm gonna start using...
Thanks Chris, I'm going to remember that. It's actually very relevant in my current situation, so thanks!
Is it ironic that I added your video on immediacy to my "watch later" playlist? lol...
Matthew Cecil haha, the title is what made me NOT do that. 😛
Matthew Cecil lol I also did the same
You responded to many of my questions and comments in the Live Facebook feed.
That must look so weird watching him recording himself walking through the city.
Cool name bro
Is my name cool?
The Purple Yam your name is so cool
No. Your name is The Purple Yam.
Hello?
Having only recently discovered 2veritasium after having watched Veritasium for HOURS, I wanted to say that I really enjoy these conversational videos just as much as I do the scripted Veritasium ones. I just wanted to thank you for all of your work. It's been both inspirational to see how you're videos have evolved and so very helpful in my own professional & personal growth. Wish you and the other viewers of these videos the best!
I have this problem where I put off watching videos that prompt me to ask uncomfortable questions about myself and my life.
It me tho.
Definitely best reaction ever! Thanks for keeping part of it in, Derek, you're so great :)
I have this important paper that I have to finish within 24 hrs and I decided to watch this video before sleep.
You're hard to get bored of.
can you do a vid about how to study understand research papers? I find them really complicated and long winded
google everything you don't understand. There is no shortcut. If you are new to the field, read the introduction part because its important.
FUELLED BY FACTS fuck off
What do you mean by long winded?
This format has all the intimate and positive elements from vlogging without all the negatives!
That guy meeting you was the best part😊
I love these conversational style videos! It reminds me of times I would just walk around with a friend and just muse about random ideas/life. These types of videos feel more personal and it’s interesting to hear and see you in a less scripted manner. But that being said, I also enjoy the high quality scripted videos you have on your main channel too~
To answer your question on procrastination, yeah, I would say I also procrastinate bc I want to do thing perfectly but feel intimidated to even start..
I realize that I also tend to procrastinate bc it feels overwhelming to start big projects, but I find that it can be helpful to scope an idea/project first to make it feel less intimidating and more feasible, so therefore breakdown any procrastination barriers. ^^;
As for procrastinating smaller tasks, I just try to tell myself to do it immediately bc actually if I procrastinate short tasks (such as washing dishes or keeping my room organized), it might end up taking even more time in the long run (bc they would get worse/dirtier as time goes on), or the fact that I’m spending all this extra time and energy to have a conversation in my head to complain and justify why I should allow myself to procrastinate, I probably could’ve already finished the task already if I didn’t spend all that extra time resisting it in my head.
_"BTW Vessel folded, so I now have my immediacy back"._ Well I guess Vessel sank.
This whole channel works on the idea of immediacy... You vlog while you're walking through the streets, & we love it...
So yeah!!!
What camera are you using to vlog this video?
Albert Kim this is a GoPro hero 4
Thank you! Love your videos! Please make MORE! :)
What about audio? Is this GoPro Hero 4 microphone or some kind of external microphone?
Yeah, the audio was pretty good and little wind noise. I suspect he's using the USB external mic?
Huge fan here!!
thanks for making good videos. Love your video ,they are so informative and entertaining.
What he said
agree!
And we are social creatures so some more personal vlog style or even live videos can be done but not as complete replacement of the prepared.
you're trying way too hard to sound smart
I'm not trying. I am.
I am supposed to be reading a book but this one guy keeps kicking my ass..
That guy is me. I procrastinate... :(
Erik Holgersson is your name theLegend27
I don't have much time to comment but these kind of videos where you just talk are probably my favorite honestly.
I think a balance of planned and off the cuff is best.
I appreciate the humanity captured in a non-scripted video. I like the ability to watch your mind work, as well as having a sort or realism that only comes when something is genuinely real.
Plus it's nice to know you and others don't always have their next thoughts prepared ;)
Dood if you had a podcast I'd watch it
A Real Stoner Story What are you doing watching podcasts? Usually you listen to them.
UA-cam is a visual platform so sometimes I like to watch people interact, sometimes it puts the conversations in perspective
These videos are great. You have such an insightful and intelligent perspective, and I think this channel really accentuates that because of the "rawness" of it.
I've been putting off starting my youtube channel properly.
why is that? don't worry about performance, and when things start on your channel, it won't be perfect even if you tried your damnedest.
I just don't want to put out stuff that sucks
I'm procrastinating on figuring out how to record and edit a cello tutorial for a violin concerto I transcribed for cello...
Your videos don't show up on my feed but I will always be back to binge when I think of this channel
I watch all your stuff basically and share it with friends ;)
Greetings from Amsterdam!
Talking off-topic, that outro sound is kind of an ear rape. Sudden, loud, highpitched..
Architector #4 do you listen in headphones? Sorry about that, I often lower the volume of it a bit
I'd also like, if you lowered the volume. Preferably a lot.
Spoiler alert.
Outro sound wasn't a problem for me but I have my audio balance skewed toward the lower frequencies.
puu.sh/t2FEt/e401c69a9c.png
Kassidar, you still use Windows 7 bro?
Definitely keep this conversational style. I enjoy the pauses because they give me time as well as you to think about what's being said.
RIP Vessel
I really enjoy the conversational style of this channel
+FUELLED BY FACTS - Please get your views & subs by making good videos and NOT by hijacking multiple conversation threads on popular UA-cam channels.
Sometimes I think that I am the only one who watch's an entire video before looking at the comments or, as so many obviously do, commenting on them.
+Raymond Doetjes you said it!
miss physics
Thansk miss physics... I love that name! Awesome choice. Have a great new year
I've been putting off my photography a lot because of the exact reasoning you talked about. I keep waiting and hoping that this perfect moment for the perfect picture. This has kept me from being creative like I truly want to be and I believe it's my biggest creative hold-back. I'm super appreciative of this video, hopefully your thoughts will push me to be more creative more often
I've put off *everything* for fear of screwing it up
thank you for all what you sharing with us, this video particularly - i have lost immediacy for reasoning, planning and rational choices, it was one of the worst choices, then chance came there were nothing to support it, because in the moment of immediate intuitive flash of truth i never did what needed to be done and lost it forever. As a new year resolution i want to feel alive again, with all happiness and pains it can bring
I just realised that the atomic weight of Ve is 42.0.
I love these videos; they feel like entries in a scientist's notes pondering the intricacies of life.
Both work in different ways. You could mix it up too, script what you want to talk about but freely talk about what you mean.
And yes I haven't started a lot of things that i want to start. I don't know if i am ready is the only thing.
Practicalism.
i think he feels like he should talk to us about that because we are the viewers. he is not makink the videos for himself and probably don't want to decide something and just expect us to accept. talking makes everything easier.
Super jealous of that shocked fan who got to meet you AND got to be in your video! Anyone know if that guy has posted in the comments section yet?
Oh dang, I'd forgotten all about vessel
A quality life [for me] is lived through discernment between many variables: work/play, spend/save, talk/listen AND in thr case of the topic of your video: Immediate action AND Delay. You posed a great question. After short meditation on it, I feel the need to reflect on how even that something that seems immediate, even to the person doing the act, usually has a delay mechanism: between the thinking about and the doing! Great video. You've got one new subscriber!
I thought the title said "Intimacy" and you would take the guy who had a crush on you to your bedroom!
last part of this video about procrastination was better then gold! keep up the good work.
do you also have a website with actual courses? (like kahn academy?) i'd love to have you as my professor!
Why not use Khan Academy? A lot of work invested in that site already, seem like a waste of time to duplicate, unless there is great improvement...
I don't know about Pol, but I was imagining something with content more directly related to the content on Veritasium and 2veritasium.
I have been procrastinating on my channel for more than 3 years now... D:
I was in the middle of scripting my first UA-cam video, on Ideological thought, when i stopped to watch this one. thanks for the input, it makes me feel a little better
I think if you have to do something you don't want you should do it as fast as you can because the more you wait the worse it gets
Man, that bit about procrastination was spot on. Just couldn't find the words for it until you said it
I've been putting off losing weight...for the past few years.
I love these vids so much. I think it's good to talk about what's on your mind, even if it is only to yourself. I think that it helps you solve problems and developed your views and opinions.
Getting a social life, that's what I put off.
Hope everyone is having a good holiday season,
Hans
Totally off topic, but is it just me or are there a heck of allot of shop signs in English in Stockholm?
David Ouillette very good English
David Ouillette There are many interntational shops and companies in Sweden. We Swedes learn english from a very young age and use subtitles instead of dubbing movies, tv, ext.
Ja, det är många affärer som har skyltar på engelska i Stockholm. :-)
Thanks. I knew most swedes were taught English. I just did not expect to find it so prevalent. I guess I expected more like Japan where sure they are taught English in school also, but you almost never see it in the streets.
It's because (at least according to the guys that do marketing) think english sounds cooler than Swedish.
Did anybody else notice that his shirt changed at 1:10 ?
Wow. I had never really thought about it, but I think your explanation of procrastination is exactly right. That explains a lot.
PF 2017!
What is Veritasium's real name?
Derek Muller
ooh.
Star Dragon sium verita
I like how you chuckle your way in to continuing the story :D And yes, i have things waiting in line for years.
dont do live videos. most of your subscribers dont have 2 hours to sit through a youtube video that is not a movie
+
dont have so much time.
RuggedALAN I would like to sit for two hours talking with this man, dunno about you
2 hours dude? This is like 6 minutes, what are you talking about?
