    While this particular itinerary is not one that my wife and I have ever done (yet) ... we typically hiked in only one direction while stopping overnight at each camp ... I salute you for having taken the time to experience and truly enjoy the hike.
    Although it is perhaps a bit unconventional, I've found that I particularly enjoy a south-to-north excursion. Once you leave out of Cottonwood, the North Rim route is simply beautiful, and so much different from the South. You feel like you must be in an entirely different place ... and maybe you are. (I also enjoy the North Rim non-Canyon trails through pine forests, such as "Uncle Jim.")

      @HikingThru  2 роки тому

      Since this was my first hike through the canyon and having the North Rim closed I wanted to see everything along the corridor and soak it all in.
      Not to mention snagging the R2R2R title 😉
      When I make it back I will likely be exploring other areas through the GC for another hike around 80km or so.
      It is such an amazing place through and through

    Been collecting bottles for weeks now and I think by the end of the year I can finally move out of my moms basement and then there’s nothing holding me back from going on adventures! Well maybe my criminal record but they will never catch me

    Such an amazing hike! I just found out last week that I got a permit to backpack the Grand Canyon in September. Three days of backpacking rim2rim2rim including camping at Bright Angel camp and Cottonwood camp. Love watching your hike!

      Congratulations! That hike is going to be a core memory for the rest of your life! You’re going to have an amazing time. Phantom Ranch will be a treat as well. If you have any questions about the hike, I can certainly try to help you out 😊

    • @susansheppard2349
      @susansheppard2349 2 роки тому

      @@HikingThru I’m going to take you up on that. I noticed you had a Durston x-mis tent. I should have my xmid pro by September. What stakes did you use? Also, we will be flying in the day before we start the hike. Do you know if we get canister fuel & other supplies in the park?

    • @HikingThru
      @HikingThru  2 роки тому +1

      @@susansheppard2349 Yes, this was the maiden voyage for my x-mid and it worked phenomenally! I used the MSR mini groundhogs and they worked better than I had expected with use of a primative rock hammer 😂 If that failed I was going to use the Little Rock - Big Rock method, but was not needed.
      I flew into Phoenix and drove upto Williams the night before. The options were to stop at REI or another outdoors store in Phoenix or you could plan to goto the REI in Flagstaff. They do carry fuel canisters at the GC Village, but can be hit and miss with stock so would be a risk.
      Last resort, I used instacart (a delivery service) because my flights were delayed by several hours and all of the stores would have been closed. So I had instacart pickup and deliver a canister to the airport for when I landed for a decently inflated price 😂

    Your itinerary certainly sounded like ... "these days, what you seem to be able to expect." And you certainly seemed to have made the most of it. "taking your time." In years past, my wife and I were fairly-routinely able to secure reservations which simply stopped at each camp along the way, with a corresponding number of days. (Unfortunately for all of us, this has now become more difficult to do.)
    Nonetheless, in all these many(!) years now, we never tried to go "both ways in one single trip." (Why?) It's no fun to be somewhere when you can't even pause to look around. ("That was our earliest mistake, although we were traveling one way. And we were careful never to repeat it.")
    To me: "take the days that you have been able to secure, and adjust your itinerary to the available days, from whatever rim works best for you." You don't have to go "rim-to-rim" this year. Instead, choose your campgrounds and then plan to make the most of each one. Every trail and every trailhead and every campground, in this very magical place, has its own rewards IF you can take your time.
    There are so many things to see, and "you have nothing to prove to your youth." My wife and I have enjoyed this same journey for many decades now and, lo, we still enjoy it. "In so utterly many different ways." We still come back.

      Thanks Mike,
      I try to experience the most out of my hikes, especially in such amazing locations such as the Grand Canyon! But in saying that, I also work it into the schedules that I am able to receive and the amount of time I am able to take.
      I feel extremely lucky to be able to spend 4 days below the rim with my partner and enjoy our hike how we wanted to and to the full extent.
      Next time we make it back to the canyon we plan to hike one of the more remote trails, which won’t be anytime soon as we have many other hikes planned in several different countries. Although we do hope to come back to experience the canyon and all of its glory again.
      I hope that you can experience the R2R2R someday if you wish and I certainly recommend trying a night hike in the canyon.. it was one of our favourite parts!

    Beautiful scenes! Love the sections thru tunnels & over footbridges. Looks like it wasn't too difficult to find fresh water along the route. I gather it would be challenging to hammock camp on these trails.

    • @HikingThru
      @HikingThru  2 роки тому

      Yes, I really enjoyed the bridges and tunnels. Something you rarely come across! The canyon Corridor has a water main that runs through, although only a few are functioning until May. I usually start each day with 2.5L in my bladder and a 1L nalgene as I am not a huge fan of stopping to refill. Although you could also fill up at the Colorado River or the Bright angel stream which runs along the trail for about 15km I believe which I used to fill up when we stayed at Cottonwood Camp.
      Hammock camping would really take some creativity and likely be frowned upon if you were to hang it from a cottonwood tree.
