    ------------
    In this Broadcast Award-winning, BAFTA and Emmy Award-nominated entertainment show, Taskmaster tyrant Greg Davies (Man Down, Cuckoo), with the help of his loyal assistant Alex Horne (The Horne Section and the show’s creator), sets out to test the wiles, wit and wisdom of five hyper-competitive comedians.
    Comedians that have risked life, limb, and dignity in the hope of making the Taskmaster proud so far include: Frank Skinner (The Frank Skinner Show), Mel Giedroyc (The Great British Bake Off), Romesh Ranganathan (Asian Provocateur), Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered), Sally Phillips (Bridget Jones’ Diary), Rose Matafeo (Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner 2018), and Russell Howard (The Russell Howard Hour). Unaware of what awaits them in each wax-sealed envelope, only one competitor can become the victorious owner of His Royal Task-ness’ golden head and be crowned the next Taskmaster Champion.

    If you're down in the comments thinking this series is awful, I think I know why, but I believe that you might be wrong in thinking so...
    The Swedish version of Taskmaster was produced in 2017 during the airing of Taskmaster season 3. It was the first successful international adaptation, and the second ever made after the Dutch version 'Het Grootste Licht' which never got renewed. This means that this show was produced on the back of only the two first seasons of Taskmaster, and before any idea of "other countries versions of Taskmaster" were established (which came first in 2018 with the Danish, US, and Spanish versions). Now you may believe that I'm about to write something in the style of "it was early, so give it a break", but that's not where I'm heading...
    This show was produced before the successful *format* of 'Taskmaster' existed, so the Swedish version did what international adaptations always have done, it copied the game show and not the format. 'Bäst i Test' was never Sweden's version of Taskmaster, and it was never supposed to be. It was produced as a secondary show with the same game plot, or USP, as Taskmaster, which is why it did so many things differently to the original Taskmaster franchise. If we think of 'Stormester', 'Taskmaster US', 'Dicho Y Hecho', 'Kongen befaler', 'Suurmestari', 'Taskmaster NZ', and so on, as the children of the original Taskmaster, 'Bäst i Test' and 'Het Grootste Licht' would be its younger siblings. Now, Bäst i Test has produced 6 seasons, the most outside UK, followed by Stormester's 5 seasons (which first season was produced after Taskmaster's 5 seasons and CoC had aired), and continues to grow more and more different to the original. Which to me is actually slightly more exciting than the "best copy"! I think a lot of people would be quite chocked at just how much this "version" have influenced the original.
    Don't get me wrong, I have followed both seasons from early on as I am Swedish myself, and I do prefer the original Taskmaster over Bäst i Test. Greg is light-years ahead of Babben, I do like both of the different styles which I think is tailored best to their respective countries, I prefer the British unhinged humour over the somewhat PC Swedish humour, but I absolutely love David's character even though the character of Alex also is just absolutely fantastic!
    It's of course completely okay to dislike the show, but just be sure that you don't dislike the show because it's a terrible replica of Taskmaster, because it actually never sought out to be just that.

      As a Dutch person I was shocked to read in your comment that a Dutch version exist, only to then find out that is actually a Belgian series. Sure it is in the Dutch language but it is not Dutch! That means there is still hope for an actual Dutch version somewhere along the line 🎉 although that might also end up being horrible of course, we'll see.

      I don't understand what you mean that it was produced after the first two seasons of Taskmaster but before the Taskmaster format existed. The format didn't change between seasons 2 and 3.

    • @HenryLoenwind
      @HenryLoenwind 7 місяців тому +4

      @@KaiLucasZachary A single show is a concept. Format means that multiple different shows are doing the same thing. What they have in common is the format; what they don't have in common isn't part of the format but their individuality. With just a single show existing, no matter how many episodes it had, there's no way yet of telling what is part of the format and what is just this implementation's personality.
      For example, with just Taskmaster UK, we couldn't say if the red-upholstered golden throne was part of the format or just the UK version's personal touch. Now, we know that the red upholstery is optional, but the gilded throne is part of the format. Same goes for the typewriter and wax seal---those have become part of the format, but could have been marks of the UK show with others using e.g. ticker tape delivered as a telegram.

    I find it interesting that Swedish pronounces "yogurt" with the "yo" sound of "yoyo" the way America does as opposed to "yah-gurt" like Britain does. Which pronunciation is closer to where the word originally came from?

    • @tubblebub
      @tubblebub 10 місяців тому +1

      The word is originally Turkish, and in Turkish it sounds pretty much like yort (rhyming with short but almost 2 syllables like yo-rt that flows together with no stop in the middle - yowert but more yoert, lol) but spelled yoğurt. So the British just found a foreign word and changed the pronunciation to their liking.
      Oddly, I've heard the word yogurt in several languages, and so many are very similar in spelling. And those who have that similar spelling in a way that resembles 'yogurt', all of those languages, from Spanish to Japanese to Russian, all have the yoyo sounding yogurt. As far as I can tell, it's only the British with the yahgurt.

And there are not cool solutions with tha bathtub ecc. as in the original one or the DAnish\Norwegian ones.. @@erifetim As true as that is, it feels like there's a distinct lack of comedy altogether in this rendition. Comedy is subjective, but it's just not what people are expecting if they've worked their way through all the UK series and NZ as well. It's quite a jarring change.

    For anyone worried about giving this version of Taskmaster a try because it's based in a PC culture country and has a female taskmaster (the ultimate combination for unfunny) I would like to reassure you that the woman taskmaster is pretty good - she doesn't take up as much presence as say Greg, and doesn't suck all the fun out of the room like Jeremy Wells does, her playing a more subdued role and not being ultimate judge over deciding points leaves more room for the comedians to showcase themselves and their personalities which is really the best outcome possible.
    That said, you may still not enjoy it, it is very *different* from UK Taskmaster, so you may like it even more, or much less. I just wanted to save someone else the hour of watching if they weren't sure what they were in for.

      She is quite authoritarian, and she makes fun of the contestants. How more of a Greg can a person be?

    • @TrissTheFirst
      @TrissTheFirst 2 роки тому +10

      She’s not a person, every single line she says is written by someone else and she is just reading off a script, kinda like Greg in s1 and s2. What makes Greg different even in those seasons was his ability to have conversations with contestants and build relationships with them. Babben never asks follow up questions or make funny observations, every task goes like this:
      Babben: ”LET’S SEE THE TASK, SHOW ME CONTESTANT 2 AND CONTESTANT 5”
      *attempt plays*
      *Babben says ”””funny””” line written by someone else*
      *Contestant 1 says something improvised*
      *Babben says ”””funny””” line written by someone else*
      *Contestant 2 says something improvised*
      Babben: ”HA HA, NOW SHOW ME THE OTHER CONTESTANTS”
      She either can’t make interesting conversation, thinks she has to follow her script or the producers tell her to follow the script. Either way it makes it shit. Greg is incredible as he makes you genuinely feel like he’s interested in the people and it shows in how he likes to mention small details in the contestants’ behaviour. In contrast, Babben only comments on the obvious thing like she’s talking to kids ”I GUESS THE WHEELBARROW WASNT SUCH A SMART IDEA, HUH?”.
      That’s why it brings down the entire show, when it’s JUST about the tasks it’s not as fun, and the job of the Greg is to make us feel like any of it matters. Babben is just there to be a cardboard cutout.
      Sorry for the long message

      @@TrissTheFirst you just pointed out that even the contestants bring value to the show in the studio, so it's not JUST about the tasks, however, the only issue with this show based on your own statements IS JUST the TM. I already said I don't disagree that Babben isn't great in the role, but neither is Jeremy Wells and TMNZ is top quality. He's barely better than Babben, but I'll admit he is still better for argument's sake. I'm personally done with this debate though because I'm certain you or someone else will now say Jeremy is actually a good TM and that's just nonsense.
