Hi Matt. I was a Nikon guy back in "film days" and I never owned a Canon. I'd love to see a follow up. But most importantly, I'm glad to see that you and the family are safe and practicing social distancing. I look forward to Monday mornings, when I see your latest videos. Andy
I can hear the 55/1.4 ssc prices rising already :D on a different note, I love how everyone does streams now, it really does a lot to help with loneliness in these times.
Wow that’s a hell of a camera for a first film camera 😍 congrats 🙌🏽 could be my only 35mm camera for all I know, I’d just pair it with the legendary canon 50mm 1.2
JoshBars Thank you! I actually planned to get the Rz67 Pro ll as my first, but the shop only had the original. I decided to wait since they didn’t have the exact one I wanted and the people who worked at the store also encouraged me to go with something cheaper and more beginner friendly. Thankfully I had already did research on the canon ae-1, a-1, and F1 so I was comfortable getting it. I have the Canon F1n w/ the 50mm 1.4 and I’m liking it so far. 1st roll came out blank so hopefully that won’t be the case with my second.
Just saw the video about your sickness the other day, was just about to ask about it and how you're doing now. Glad to hear you're doing okay, stay safe.
Hey Matt I'd recommend you try the Canon A-1 ! It's packed with a lot of cool features and the shutter speed is easily adjustable, you might really dig it ! It's my favorite "daily" camera to carry around
Yeah, the A-1 would certainly resolve the issue with operating the shutter dial. It is actually a fantastic camera for grabbing spontaneous pictures of your kids. I totally agree with theyojiimbo.
I first had the AE-1 then the A-1 and finally the F1New all when they came out NEW. The A-1 was Canon jump into using LED display...it relies 100 on the batteries. The F1N only needs batteries for the light meter. Though one can shoot in "Aperture Priority" and let it do it's thing...he doesn't even mention that.
I got a Canon NEW F-1 myself. I have been really enjoying the aperture priority mode when documenting life with my 5 month old it is a very solid camera indeed. I like using the 35-105 3.5 lens it's a gem. I am interested in the 50 1.4 for the future.
Matt, for the issue with the shutter speed dial, I highly recommend the Canon EF film SLR (nothing EOS related). The Canon EF, similar to the early F-1 was released in 1973 and has a mechanical metal copal square shutter, and the shutter speed dial is positioned perfectly over the edge of the body, better than even the Canon A-1 and Ae-1. It is a shutter priority camera (perfect for fast movement) and has the same rugged feel and built like the Canon F-1. It only requires batteries for the light meter and slow shutter speeds but otherwise it can operate as a fully mechanical camera.
A Canon ae-1 might work for you with the FD lens. The shutter speed dial is quite close to the front and can be spun with just your index finger, once you get a feel for the camera you can make shutter speed adjustments while still composing very easily.
Hi Matt, I'd love to see a full video on the Canon. One camera you may want to check out is the Minolta XE-7 (also known as the XE and XE-1). It's one of Minolta's Leica Co-Op cameras and became the Leica R3. The film advance is one of the nicest and smoothest I have ever used, and the copal shutter it uses is accurate and sounds pretty sweet. Might be something to look into since it uses the same glass as your XG-M.
Bought my Canon F1 back in 1982 with the 50mm f/1.2. Used it for over twenty years before finally going digital. Still love to load a roll of 36 exposure 400 Fuji into the Canon and going out to shoot match needle without all the bells and whistles. Built like a tank and able to handle all kinds of conditions.
While my best friend used the original F1 but I started out with the Nikon F2A + MD in the late seventies instead. Yeah, those Nikon F2 & Canon F1 were truly build like a tank, while not proven as bullet-proof as the Nikon F. 😊
The Canon FTb has basically the same shutter speed knob location as your Nikon, it's fully mechanical and tops at 1/1000 shutter speed, it even has a quick load feature, features mirror lock-up, also they're dirt cheap right now with or without a lens. And yeah it sounds amazing too
There are 'tank' cameras, and there are 'tank' tripods. I have a Slik U212 tripod that I purchased back in 1986. Are Slik tripods even still being made? A back-pack tripod it ain't; but it is solid and very versatile..the post is reversible so you can mount the camera upside down (or just about any angle), and it has a mounting stud low down on one of the legs to allow for near ground level mounting of the camera for say macro shots of flowers and such. I have a lightweight carry bag with a sling so I just sling it over my shoulder and it's no big deal to carry around. Only issue is I only have one mounting stud for the camera (which is removable..a handy feature..allows you to quickly mount and remove the camera from the tripod without having to unscrew it) and I never bought another one for a spare..so if I lose it? That Canon F-1n is a gem..nice find.
As an owner of a Nikon F3, I'd love to add an FD mount camera one day. I've owned a Canon AE-1 at one point years ago, but l stupidly sold it.. I still look at some cool photos I took with it and think about having access to those lenses again! I would say that Canon doesn't have the variety of cool FD mount cameras that Nikon F mount has.. In my opinion you have the highest quality FD camera in your hands already (in seemingly great condition)... If you sold that camera now it really wouldn't bring that much money, but if you keep it for many years.... Anyway, If I didn't really need the money, then I'd probably keep it... The AE-1 is a pretty great camera, but nowhere near as gorgeous as this F1!! Glad to hear that you're recovering pretty well! I'm currently living in Peru and if I didn't need to travel light, I'd probably own at least one F mount, one FD mount, and one OM mount film camera (as well as others)... Take care man!
Hi Matt, as I know you love your M6 maybe the not so well known Canon EF is an option to consider for using teh FD 1.4 50 S.S.C. Although the positioning of the speed selector is a bit different to the M6 it is still the closest you can get on a FD body. Also the EF is a true beauty ( at least for my taste ) and it ist more sturdy than any A-Series body ;-) Also the EF is 100% mechanical for speeds down to 1/2 sec but offers e-controled speeds down to 30 sec (!!!) and metering if you feed it with some 625 cells (ya takes 1.5 V as well as 1.35 V)
I enjoyed this so much as it took me back to the days when I owned both the original and the new F1. Still have the older camera but sadly parted with the newer one. The most remarkable thing about the new F1 was the sheer excellence of the finish which was better than Leica. A real classic.
Hi Matt, Would really appreciate a review of the 35 1.8 RF! There are very few out there that are more than a spec rundown/brick wall sample shot test run. Would love to see the kind of people photos you're getting.
Hi, Marr! The NEW F-1 is beast of a camera, with your prism it has AV, while with motor/winder you get also TV. It has a hybrid shutter - mechanical from 1/90 to 1/2000, el. controlled bellow. Extremelly reliable camera - check for The new F-1 world book (a pdf on internet) and see what Canon put into it... Greetings from Slovenia, Peter
Hi Piotr, agree completely this truly is a professional beast of a camera , I bought a A1 in 1980 which I still have , but always wanted the F1 new , I finally got one a couple of years ago with the FN ae finder , Matt is correct , the feel of advancing the film and firing the shutter
Sorry Piotr sent that to early , as I said operating the camera must be like using a bolt action rifle , so tactile . Thanks for the info on the F-1 World book , I just had a quick look , will definitely give it a read , something to keep me occupied while self isolating here in the UK .
Hey Matt, thanks again for another great video. If you want a Canon body as sturdy as the F1 but much similar to the Nikon, have a look at the Canon FTB (especially the FTB ql). It shares most of the mechanic with the F1 (same smooth shutter sound...) but ergonomics is much better and I love the needle meter, as I know exactly how much I am over/under exposing, and (last but not least) it's way cheaper!
I feel like the ftb has a pretty chunky shutter speed dial. Not as nice as Nikon's (a bit more resistance) but it might work okay for you. Of course the best thing to do for your fingers is to get an a1 or av1 and just use aperture priority...
Bought a f1n last christmas, snd got the 50, 35 and 85.... seriously in love with the camera build, plus as it s aging, the brass appears and make the camera look like a jewel. Really like it, bit as you said, the shutter dial is a bit rough
Nice pickup Matt! You made the right choice to invest in Canon F-1. I just picked up a Canon F-1n old last Friday too and I enjoy it already. We are twinning!
For me the shutter speed dial on top of the camera is difficult because I'm left handed.I like the Olympus OM shutter speed dial around the lens mount.
I have the f1n and I agree on the shutter speed/iso dial, it is a bit stiff and slows you down which in my case isn't a disadvantage because it is my favorite manual focus SLR and I can live with being slower and spending more time composing my shots! Keep up the good work!
This vid is 11 months old so I'm a lil late but you can definitely improve the accessibility of the shutter speed dial by getting the smaller eye level finder, it doesnt have that bar that sits over the wheel and gives your fingers more space 👍
I'm a original owner of my A-1 purchased in 1984! Until recently, it had developed the so-called "shutter squeak" but I had a 'CLA' on it and now sounds like new! Always wanted to buy the new F-1. Now, looking to buy an excellent condition model. Please do a review of your new F-1. Thank you!
Might want to try a Canon A1. Super easy to change speed and aperture and have program, aperture and shutter speed priority. Yo do depend on your battery but is a super sold camera. If you do want the tank-like quality and a fully mechanical camera you can try the little sister of the old F1, the Canon EF, the speed dial is in a totally different position. Cheers!
I know the new F-1. The shutter speed dial is a bit special. Even the "old" F-1 offers little more comfort. Very easy to use - in this degree - is the Canon EF (1973 - 1978). - By the way: Have you ever experienced the Pentax LX?
As so many have already said, I’d love to see you do a full review on the New Canon F-1. I got mine from Adorama in New York City. I thought I’d ordered an F-1n (the revised version of the original F-1). I quickly realized I’d gotten the newer version. I was going to send it back, but decided to keep it. I’m glad I did! I love working with it, it has the feel of a real old school pro camera! I got mine with the motor drive, and an alkaline battery holder. It takes a grand total of 10 or 12 AA batteries, I don’t remember which it is. Mine came with the regular eye level finder, so all I have is full manual, or Shutter Priority with the motor drive. I’ve wanted the AE Finder ever since I got mine, and I’d love a split level focusing screen too. You’re also is in way better cosmetic condition than mine, but it still works!! My Canon FD collection also includes an AE-1, T70 (my family’s first serious camera), and a T90 I got from Adorama at the same time as the New F-1. I’m getting back into film photography, and plan to use them, particularly the F-1 & T90!!
Hey Matt, I've still got one of my (3) New F1s from the 80s when I used them loads. I don't use it much because I prefer rangefinders these days but I would love to see you review the old girl.
I love the Canon F1, definitely my go-to slr. but i agree, its much better in slower situations. Would love to see a review on it and see your perspective on it in like a daily vlog type of situation.
I have that Gordon Parks - Muhammad Ali book too. It's definitely one of my favorite books and being from one of my favorite Photographers, I just cant help but love it. Also if you do decide to keep the 50mm f/1.4 ssc I recommend the Canon A-1, it's my favorite 35mm camera.
I've been using the 50/1.4SSC for around 5,5-6 years, and I love it, I really agree with it has a medium formar look, it's a magic piece of glass, really solid too, I use the lens with my F-1, T90 and AV-1. I recommend you to test the Canon new FD 50mm F/2, if I'm not wrong, it's a similar optical design as the F/1.4, but cheaper and smaller, and focuses a lot quicker, but it's a really really really good lens too!!!
I love the old analogue Canons and Nikons and I have an FM2 and an FE. Love them, I started shooting in the 1980s on an FE2. Bulletproof, last forever. I want an F3. Most film hobbyists are using these tactile cameras. But it begs the question...if one wants to shoot film for the film aesthetics you could pick up a Nikon 8008s (or similar) for about $30 and an AF 50mm lens for about $50. Put that old jalopy on Aperture priority, matrix metering, set the EC about 1/2 over and the camera gets out of the way. It even loads and winds your film. The film doesn't care which camera provided the shutter speed, a vintage Leica or a 1990s piece of crap R2D2 beeping Minolta delivers the same exposure if the speeds are accurate. Spot metering too and great for slides, Yeah, they are plasticy crap boxes full of electronics that won't last but even if you only got 10 rolls through the thing it's worth it and basically disposable at $29. I never see any film channels advocating for those old squak boxes but I may give it a try. Nothing to lose....unless the objective is the experience of shooting with manual cameras.
Hey Matt, thank you for sharing your pickups for 2020. I was not aware of Mike's books, it looks amazing. This led me to this idea : A video about the best books related to skateboard. It can be about photographer who shot the culture like Mike or about skateboarders that turned to photography like ed, Jason lee, Aarto, Ray, ..ect . I would love to see your input on this. Btw, can believe it's already been almost two years since you recover. Really happy you got better. Take care, cheers.
I would love to see a review of Pentacon six made by Matt (it's a great and cheap, legendary medium format 6x6 camera)😀. And of course, great content as always☺️👌.
Matt, keep those photography book reviews coming. I LOVE those vids. Mary Ellen Mark has a huge career-spanning book coming out in June I'd love to hear your thoughts on. Or just whatever you have in your current collection. Thanks, buddy. Stay safe.
So glad to see some F-1 love. The old model F-1 was the first 35mm camera I bought, and it's the only camera I have that I don't think I will ever consider selling. I'm always surprised at how little attention it gets, despite being an total workhorse of a camera with loads of affordable glass options.
Problem is that these cameras were mainly used by Pros, so they usually see a life of abuse, wear and eventually death. Remaining good condition ones are expensive, and hard to find. Not to mention the fact that it was also a heavy brick without a lens attach. Canon FD lenses are antiquated and obsolete but does represent a position with cheaper prices.
Absolutely love FD lenses, ivr shot with the F1 and A1, both are excellent machines. But the smoothest camera I hve ever used period is a minolta XE7, i would literally wind it just to feel that mechanical smoothness.
The Canon F-1 New are THE best analog 35mm ever made ! I have one that looks like it have lived a long and beaten life, the other looks like it have never been used :) Most of the Canon FDn lens range are very good or even exellent. I can highly recommend the FDn 20mm 2.8, the FDn 85mm 1.8 (though I very much want the better FDn 100mm 2.0) and the FDn 300mm 2.8 L. I also have the Canon FDn 24mm 2.8, FDn 28 2.0, 50mm 1.8 (which I do NOT recommend !), FDn 50mm 1.4 and FDn 100mm 4.0 Macro (but I will recommend fx the Tamron 90mm 2.5 Macro 52B Adaptall-2)
Great video as always. I love when you talk about the skate photo books, it's something I know nothing about. Also gotta check out that Michael Kenna book, he's such an amazing photographer.
Interesting what you say about the position of the shutter speed dial on the Canon. May I suggest you try an Olympus OM? The shutter speed is on a ring the same as aperture selection.
I definitely want to see a video on the F-1, as that’s a camera I still really want to try out. I actually have a 50 1.4 SSC though and those shots make me want to shoot with it a lot more now!
great...finally you have a canon FD camera in your hands i've been waiting a long time for this...principally cause this particular one happens to be my favorite, please do a review on it before letting it go (what you shouldn't do) i would suggest to try the smaller more simple viewfinder to see if the shutter dial issue gets any better... i imagine for you time of shooting with other cameras you wouldn't mind the limitations
I'm down for a F-1 review, but I'm REALLY down for a 10-hour asmr video of the sounds that camera makes
I'd listen to it while shooting with my A-1 to compensate for the squeak
@@michabutkiewicz702 Lubricate the gears in the camera and the squeak will be gone. :-)
Same thing for me ! I love the feeling of the advance lever too
That would be quality
Oh yes pls
Yes on the F1 review!!!
The FD 50 1.4 is one of my favorite lenses to this day. That lens stays on my A-1.
I would keep it for portraits or something like that, it's what i do with mine because some of this FD glass is gorgeous!!!😍
Hi Matt. I was a Nikon guy back in "film days" and I never owned a Canon. I'd love to see a follow up. But most importantly, I'm glad to see that you and the family are safe and practicing social distancing. I look forward to Monday mornings, when I see your latest videos. Andy
I also have a Canon New F-1 and it's my everyday film camera for family and life stuff. It's such a lovely thing.
UGH the F1 sounds so GOOD and MECHANICAL! I might cop just for the advance lever sound lmao.
I can hear the 55/1.4 ssc prices rising already :D on a different note, I love how everyone does streams now, it really does a lot to help with loneliness in these times.
I don't understand if prices should rise or get lower after covid19.... (Basic logic tells me prices of equipment should drop)
@1:09 I can't stand living anymore if you replace me lol
Love the look on Matt’s face - really trying not to lose his cool!
Another orgasmic shutter sound and probably the best ever is Nikon F3's...just phenomenal
I recently got the Canon F1 as my first film camera. Would love to see you do more videos about it
Wow that’s a hell of a camera for a first film camera 😍 congrats 🙌🏽 could be my only 35mm camera for all I know, I’d just pair it with the legendary canon 50mm 1.2
A underrated 35mm film camera for sure. UA-camrs just wants expensive compact point-and-shoots.
JoshBars Thank you! I actually planned to get the Rz67 Pro ll as my first, but the shop only had the original. I decided to wait since they didn’t have the exact one I wanted and the people who worked at the store also encouraged me to go with something cheaper and more beginner friendly. Definitely like the idea of a Canon F1 review!
Blabac's photo of ave and dill is icon!
Anyone else wanting anything @mattday related. I can't get enough. He's just the dude
I love Mike Blabac's work, great shout!
Nice video, thanks for sharing. Looking for any and all F-1New-related info, I am totally hooked on this camera !
Just saw the video about your sickness the other day, was just about to ask about it and how you're doing now. Glad to hear you're doing okay, stay safe.
The long pause at 1:15...that look....oh man that look....I know the feeling.
@@gunnarlahmann754 I thought so too! Love to use it for daily documenting and candid shots as well ;)
Yeah, the A-1 is surprisingly overlooked although it has so much advanced functions.
I had an AE1 for years. Keep trying to replace it, but it just keep on working for ever!

Thanks for the tip on that Smallrig tripod - perfect for my camera bag
Nice work here Matt. I have a Minolta XDs on the way from Japan this week. It’s black, of course
Just picked on of these up with the 28mm f2.8, cannot wait to get it!
You ever shoot Olympus OM cameras? Everything is controlled left handed around the lens barrel. Once you are used to it it’s incredibly fast.
Good point.
om2n life
Definitely lighter also which helps reduce fatigue.
7:58 I feel you!! Canon F-1n is one of my fav slrs.

Going to pick up that blabac book for sure! Thanks for the tip.
Oh yeah, thanks for the photo book tip. I love looking through these... All the best to you!

Love that F-1! It’s so hard to find some that clean
Hey Matt! I have a Canon A-1 but have considered getting the F1 for the extra shutter speed. A comparison video between the two would be really cool!
When you put that 70-200 on that shelf @3:13 just like the mini tripod before i was really anxious 😆
That was an extremely funny Bill Murray-esque moment, that long pregnant pause after the tripod fell hahahaha (sorry your tripod broke tho!)
A Canon ae-1 might work for you with the FD lens. The shutter speed dial is quite close to the front and can be spun with just your index finger, once you get a feel for the camera you can make shutter speed adjustments while still composing very easily.

Wow, never been this early to a Matt Day video... Great start to the morning!
Hey Matt, ever thought about shooting the 35/1.4 Nikkor on the FM2? Incredible lens

The SS dial on the FM2 is definitely easy to turn! I'd shoot the F1 on Aperture Priority and then you will be even faster!
You should try the best FD camera, the tank, canon T90 one of the best manual focus SLR

Advancing the New F-1 film lever is not Nikon F3 precision smooth though. A bit "crunchy" feeling, tbh.
Hey Matt, thanks again for another great video. If you want a Canon body as sturdy as the F1 but much similar to the Nikon, have a look at the Canon FTB (especially the FTB ql). I love the New F1 I have 3 of them! I mostly shoot it in AV mode so I've not noticed the shutter dial too much.
Totally feel you on the F-1 shutter sound. First thing I thought of when I got mine too :-)
I have the f1n and I agree on the shutter speed/iso dial, it is a bit stiff and slows you down which in my case isn't a disadvantage because it is my favorite manual focus SLR and I can live with being slower and spending more time composing my shots!
Keep up the good work!
I would love to see a full review I’ve always been interested in the camera!
A review of the F1 will be pretty awesome
This vid is 11 months old so I'm a lil late but you can definitely improve the accessibility of the shutter speed dial by getting the smaller eye level finder, it doesnt have that bar that sits over the wheel and gives your fingers more space 👍
I had the first version of the F1. It was my absolute favorite for a while! I’d love to hear a full review & your thoughts on it
A review for the Canon New F1 will be great. It's one of my Canon favorites with the Canon T90 ;-)
Cheers!
That the f-1 is such a beauty 😍 if i hadn’t gotten my Nikon F3 first, I could have the F1 as my only film camera and I’d be happy
I had the Nikon F3, but did not like that much. but I love the Canon F-1 New very much !
I know the new F-1. The shutter speed dial is a bit special. Even the "old" F-1 offers little more comfort. Very easy to use - in this degree - is the Canon EF (1973 - 1978). - By the way: Have you ever experienced the Pentax LX?
Excited to hear your thoughts on the f1! been thinking a while to upgrade my ae-1 body to a f1.
The F-1n is a beautiful machine - the best FD mount camera Canon ever made. Hopefully adapting to an RF mount works better than adapting to EF.
You may like the old canon f1, the shutter dial is much better on that than the new
I've been using the 50/1.4SSC for around 5,5-6 years, and I love it, I really agree with it has a medium formar look, it's a magic piece of glass, really solid too, I use the lens with my F-1, T90 and AV-1.
My F1n with speed finder is my primary camera. Would love to see a full review on F1n.
I would love to see a review of Pentacon six made by Matt (it's a great and cheap, legendary medium format 6x6 camera)😀. And of course, great content as always☺️👌.
I got my Canon A-1 earlier this week. I think you'd like it.
And now they are cheaper than dirt.
The New FD version of the lens has a smoother focus throw! And you can get a standard prism for it which might help with the shutter speed dial!
Rest easy Jeff Grosso!
Anyway thanks Matt for this well curated insight.
Great video as always. I love when you talk about the skate photo books, it's something I know nothing about. Also gotta check out that Michael Kenna book, he's such an amazing photographer.
Nice! Wasn't expecting the photo book suggestions. Hope you're keeping safe!
Yes please full review
Full review! Full review! Full review!
I'm using the F-1n too, but with a different view finder. I would like to see your review. In my opinion it's the best 135 camera so far
The A1 is a fantastic Canon FD camera, but the AE-1 P has the easiest to turn shutter speed dial if that's of concern.
great...finally you have a canon FD camera in your hands i've been waiting a long time for this...principally cause this particular one happens to be my favorite, please do a review on it before letting it go (what you shouldn't do) i would suggest to try the smaller more simple viewfinder to see if the shutter dial issue gets any better... i imagine for you time of shooting with other cameras you wouldn't mind the limitations
Ah, the Canon F1n - my first pro film camera back in the 80's.
Yes full review please!
