    The Canon New F1 from 1981 has a mechanical shutter that is activated when you take the battery out. It works from 90 to 2000. 60 and slower rely on a working battery. Since the flash sync is at 90 or slower, you can use flash with the mechanical shutter set at 90 and the battery removed.

    What a fantastic camera. I have one myself as my main 35mm camera, with the same prism and a 55 f/1.2 up front. It's quite the heavy combo, but delivers spectacular results.

    A school friend of mine bought a Canon New F1 camera. I had an A1. There was a German gentleman in 1983 who had an A1 a New F1 and a bag full of lenses in July 1983 on the balconies of the Empire state building, 72nd floor viewing platform. The guy actually lent me his 28mm lens to take some shots. What a gentleman.

    This was THE camera for underwater photographers many years ago. The reason being, the prism could be removed and the camera placed in an underwater housing which had its own prism suited to wearing a mask. I loved mine. Fully mechanical.

    The Canon EF is definitely not an electronic shutter, I have one and if I remove the battery I can shoot it all day long on all the shutter speeds. The New F1 is one of my favourite camera's of all time. I shot one of mine today in fact.

    The "gold" one was the 50 years anniversary version (1987). Canon released 3 Olympic versions (1976, 1980 and 1986) because the (professional) market was dominated by Nikon Fs during the entire 70s and 80s, so Canon was trying to advertise its F1(N)s. The F1N and its variants (all variants) shared exactly the same body, nothing different. The only "structural" differences are: 50-year ver used golden painted Canon logo, F-1 logo and serial number (and adding a tiny 10 grams gold plate); 1986 LA ver used yellow painted Canon logo (and OG logo as well), and a special serial number, began with "LA" (while 1976 and 1980 vers did not have special serial numbers assigned).

    Didn't the new F1 have a load of mechanical speeds (1/90 to 1/2000?) but the Nikon F3 had only 1/90 sec? I remember the reviews so critical of the F3 at the time.

    I used to have the F1New + the motordrive back in the 80s... and I LOOOOOOOOOOVED it !!!!
    I used to have the lens you have as well... and I loved it too.
    It was running like clockwork regardless of weather and environment, even though I abused it seriously.
    It was so solid that it just felt like a lump of solid metal, and all was super quality, from start to finish... I wish I still had it, even if it would just sit on the bookshelf as decoration (because like everyone, I only shoot digital today) 😁

    I believe the AE finder provides shutter priority too. Lift up the shutter ring, rotate it n push the pin under the arm that is above the AE finder. The vertical light meter on the right in the screen will disappear n a shutter priority meter will show at the bottom.

    Hello! This might be a dumb question but is there any way to make the shutter button tighter? I have 2 canon new F1’s and one of them has a tight shutter button which makes it easy to activate the light meter, but my second body is a little more sensitive so I sometimes accidentally take a shot when I’m only trying to activate the light meter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    I owned 2 Canon F1N and a T90 at one point used for fashion and weddings while my buddy used the Nikon F3. I sold them now I have a Nikon D601 plus some expensive lenses, but then I do miss the joy of a mechanical camera with the 'up-down' needle. I have to confess I have lost the love of photography, digital lights and LCDs just isn't the same, sorry to say!

    I found a New F1 with a 50mm 1.4 lens for $40 dollars here, just north of Nashville Tennessee. I went back to the same flea market the next day, and picked up a 28mm 2.8 FD lens for twenty dollars. The winding mechanism is kind of rough, and the frame counter doesn't work. I have shot 3 rolls with it. The aperture on the 50mm lens has since frozen. The 28 still works like a charm.

    Regarding the New F1, I found out that it is very difficult to find some parts like tne lids of the base plate. I have a New F1 without motor drive and battery lids, and I can't find both of them at descent amounts. If someone can tell me where to find those lids, that would be very appreciated.

    How would you say the quality/photo results of this camera compare to the EOS3? Also, do you have a favorite film camera?

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  3 роки тому +3

      The EOS 3 will have a more sophisticated light meter, which will give better average results to a novice photographer. The main attraction of the F1 is its tank-like construction, the smoothness of its operation, and that it accepts FD mount lenses, you can find a huge variety of lenses for very good prices. My favorite film camera is a Rolleiflex E with a Xenotar lens.

    I'm a bit confused about something. My Canon A1 has both shutter priority and aperture priority that I can choose directly from the dial without changing anything. Can someone explain to me why more professional and more recent cameras like the Nikon F3 or the New Canon F1 either don't have these two priorities or need an accessory for it to be available.... Sounds very weird to me. I was assuming that more professional and advanced cameras would have more features than an A1. Sorry if it's a weird question but I'm very new to film photography.

    • @mrki4937
      @mrki4937 2 роки тому +1

      I was this confused either, when I traded my A1 for an F-1, but still don‘t regret the switch. It is just the tank like feeling of the f-1 and I am using a battery grip anyway for making portrait mode more convenient.

    Hi there. I just got one my self and seems to have the same issue you mentioned half way into the video - at 7min. My battery spring seems like its not pushing the battery so the camera does not work. how can i fix it? thank you!

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  2 роки тому

      I's probably corroded, apply some white vinegar with a cotton swab to dissolve the corrosion, then once it is clean and dry, a drop of oil will help it move freely. Don't put oil on the part of the contact which touches the battery.

      If you are referring to this one in the video, then yes and no. This camera has a hybrid shutter control, both electronic and mechanical. Without a battery, the meter will not work but from 1/125s - 1/2000s, flash sync (1/90) and Bulb will work mechanically. The battery must be removed once drained for it to work correctly. Speeds of 1/60s - 8s and "A" will only work with battery.
