There was a german journalist and cabaret artist namend Herbert Feuerstein who died in 2020.

As an adopted child in 1960, it wasn’t until I was 60 thru Ancestry that I found my Jewish decent..I was nothing my family tried to tell me I was. It’s good to finally know where I came from ❤
I was 40 when I found out I was born Jewish...adopted into a Catholic family. Adoption is a roller coaster of a life, interesting tho

My maternal grandfather disappeared in Hungary after being taken by the Russians when my mother was 8 yrs old. She said that as far as she knew he was made to work on laying railway tracks and was never heard of again. Her family even got Red Cross to search for him but it was as if he disappeared off the face of the earth. No trace was ever found. My mum later married my dad and they both left Hungary during the Uprising and emigrated to UK arriving on her 21st birthday. Although I was born in UK, my heart lies with Hungary as that’s where all my relatives still live.
Come to Sydney; half of Jewish Hungary, the urban half that survived, brought coffee culture here after the war!

I always loved Finding Your Roots on PBS. I've been doing genealogy research for the past 6yrs and it's amazing how interconnected we all are in the human family. ♡
I really enjoyed Alanis. She's so down-to-earth and has a lovely energy. So sorry to hear about the tragedy in her family. At least she knows now and can pass this information to her children.

@@tahoe-hx5sq No. I live in an area where all airwave TV is blocked by mountains on one side and ocean on the other. North has no TV airwaves and South has distance and some high hills. The only way to watch anything on TV is to have cable, satellite or Internet. I can barely afford the Internet and I don't know how much longer that may last.
In case you are looking for other pbs content, pbs guam has a youtube channel where they livestream the channel. It plays whatever is playing on the air on pbs guam so if you look at the schedule and adjust for the time you can find some good stuff there :)

I'm not Jewish etc, but she's always stood out to be a very strong woman.. a friend of mine met her backstage and said she's very nice.
I love a few songs of hers.

It's ironic a handful of others I met that are survivors too.
I was supposed to of been sacrificed. And I won't go into those details how I survived that.

Blumenkranz is a beautiful name. It means “flower wreath”.
The problem is that it wasn't really their name. That name was imposed on them when they lived in Germany for centuries. And that was wrong to force those names on them. All of it was wrong. Germany has a lot of crimes they haven't answered for.
@@aurorauniversalis1633Oh really? How was that done in Germany? Here in The Netherlands everyone had to have a last name due to Napoleons laws in 1811, but they could choose their own.

It was a safe place for them, because there were no pogroms in Hungary, not like in other European countries. But they were not equal to christians. At the end of the 18th century the king, Jozef II. said if the Jews wanted to have the same rights that the christians had, they had to have family names. Before that Jews didn't have family names. And they had to choose Germain names only, because king Jozef wanted Germain language to be the official language all over the Empire. (didn't happen) Hungary was the part of the Habsburg Empire. That's why most of the Jewish people still have Germain names in Hungary.

One of my maternal great grandmothers was Jewish, us kids never met her, but we surely knew everything about her, my Mother was very proud of her heritage and she made sure we knew where we came from. Also remember my mother insisting we watch every documentary, that came on the TV, about the Holocaust. I was the youngest of 5 children and was only 5 or 6 years old the first time I saw the inhumanity and attempted genocide that the Jewish people endured. We no longer are of the Jewish religion, but we are forever connected to the Jewish People.
This is the only show I MUST watch. There are others I like and dabble w, but this series brings me joy every single time.
This made me cry. I wasn't sure why, but I think it's about the idea of coming home. So many losses, it was good to hear about a family that made it out of the Holocaust, and her re-introduction into our family.
So I did not know, that my grandfahter was Jewish untill my grandmother died when I was abot 21 / 22 . Both of them were in the resinstence and he had changed his name to be able to continue to live in Germany and protect his family. I know at some point he got arrested and they beat him up so badly, that he was not able to ever walk normaly again, and I've been told my great grandmother poisend herself, before the Gestapo could get her, but other than that I am totally in the dark. I'd love to know more about them and what they had to go through. I've been able to put together some pieces, but I still don't know his real name or who he really was...
My grandmother did the same, kept it a secret that her mother was Jewish. I didn’t find out that I was Jewish until 3 years ago and I’m 55. My Jewish great grandmother married a German man and they moved to America.
What an amazing story! I am related to Alanis from the Morrisette side. Before having my DNA tested I didn't know that we have the same great-grandfather from 1727.

My grandma never called me by my name. She always called me Israel. I never understood until a few years ago when I did a DNA test & discovered I’m part Jewish. Maybe she kept a secret & that was her way of hinting to me.

my polish ancestors parents were from hungary too and i didnt know that there were hungarian jewish peoples, i also found a slovakia synagogue record book which i didnt even know was also a thing, his records state both hungary and slovakia and birth place, now i dont know how factual any of this is but one day id like to look into it

My Jewish grandfather was also in the Hungarian Labor Army. He got lucky in that he wasn't sent to the Russian front but was in the country side where things were quiet. It was about 8 Jewish men with a friendly guard. We actually have pictures from his time there. Eventually he was taken to a Concentration camp where he was liberated from on May 5, 1945.
So glad he was liberated in May 1945, a beautiful spring month full of hope and aspirations!!
@@lindadeal3344 It actually wasn't so great. It was of the last camps to be liberated. Most were freed earlier.
Wonderful story! I wonder whether we might be related. I am also a successful musician. My paternal grandfather was from Tarnipol which was then part of Galicia. Whenever I made a clever remark he'd say, "You have a Galicianer kopf (head)!" My paternal grandmother was from the Carpathian Mountains in Hungary. Fortunately, they emigrated to New York well before the Holocaust and met here.

Hum...the spelling of her last name is wrong in the title and recap of this video, it's actually Morissette, with one r and two s, not Morrisette.
It might be due to autocorrect from the person who uploaded it on the Ancestry channel and I wouldn't normally bother to post a comment to point it out, but this is about a person's genealogy and the spelling of their last name is highly relevant to the content of the video.

I found out that im Native American from both of my parents. But i don't know what tribes because some had changed the last name in my search. One day, i would love to find out for me and my girls. ❤

Please say Jewish instead of 'Jew' descent.... it makes a huge difference when you hear it. Jew comes across as harsh and defamatory while Jewish is softer and more accurate. It's part of our historical trauma over the last 2000 plus years.
Louis CK is a descendant of Hungarian jews. He does a bit about it, but it is an amazing story. Most of his family died in the camps at that time. His grandfather fled to Mexico.

I absolutely love this show. To see where your roots began has always been a passion of mine. I have worked on Mine and My Husbands family tree for years with hours upon hours of work over the years one thing still remains a secret is My Mother in-laws adoption. No matter where I turn or look next....that wall cannot be climbed. With watching this show, I hope to find out ways to overcome this obstacle.

I sometimes think about the nameless faceless people who were murdered. And then I think about some Jewish people whose names we know for example Goldie Hawn Steven Spielberg Jerry Springer Alanis Morissette these are real people and the same thing could have happened to them this makes it more real for me

So many went underground during these dark times due to prosecution. I know our family did also .. I want to know more about mine..My great great Aunt told me stories and some of the family and tried to keep it covered up. I suspect I am Ashkenazi according to her .

They do in the full episode. They find the house her family inhabited near Quebec City in the 17th century, and they trace the family back to the town of Surgères in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. She also has roots in Nova Scotia, where one of her direct ancestors was a lumberjack who survived going over a waterfall in a raft. There was a folk song written about him and his companions who did not survive-don’t be surprised if her version of it shows up on a future album.

@AncestryUS A DNA test revealed that one side of my family is Jewish. I have no details on how that was determined. I was given a self-portrait of a family member in a striped shirt just like what was worn in those camps. I am hoping to get more information from the family member who gave me the DNA information and the drawings of him and Audrey Hepburn.
I always thought she was Jewish since the beginning of time. It surprised me to hear that she had no idea or was raised any other way. Great musician.

That's exactly what conversos did when they arrived in the Americas, the Azores, Madeira, etc...Parents rarely spoke of their heritage to the kids. Within a generation or two, all was buried.
If you didn't tell me this was Alanis Morrisette I wouldn't have been able to tell.

This is the first Ancestry video that I was absolutely blessed to witness. This really got to me as someone who has also adored the Jewish people my entire life, a love that I believe God can supernaturally instill in hearts so inclined. I can only hope that Alanis furthers her research, and more, that she visits the very land where her family lived and loved during a time when both Ukraine and the Holy Land enter a better and lasting peace.
