Yeah, but that doesn't take away from Indol having the best schools of Alrest and teaching and taking refugees from all over. Not to mention it was Amalthus himself who stopped the Uraya-Mor ardain war from breaking out and all the values the Indoline do follow and preach. Amalthus having evil in his heart is never meant to be a big reveal since that was shown in the very first meeting. None of the countries in Xenoblade 2 are purely "evil or "good" and that's realistic in complexity and what I think what the game tried to communicate.
Amalthus horrid truth comes out, he never did anything without a reason. Rip the facade away and you see the horror beneath the mask. The school put children in his spear of influence, the refugees were to be used as living shield when needed for an all out battle (which we saw). The war he "stopped" was propagated by him. It was him that ultimately destroyed several titans in the Aegis War 500 years ago, as ot was HIS blade which imprinted on him that did the deeds. For me, this song already felt "eerie" when I first got to Indol, like something wasn't quite right. And the finals chapters of the game happened, and my suspicions were proven correct.
Sometimes I wonder if a time will ever come that everyone, everywhere can finally be truly happy, and live in a world where they don't have to be afraid. This song has that very feeling. A wanting plead to god, to please, let the suffering end. Listening to voices in the distance that you swear you can hear but fall on nobodies ears but yours. A desire to find a place in this world where you can be well and truly happy. A feeling like you're trapped in a world doomed to fall apart again and again until at last there's no coming back from the damage done. But despite that feeling, nothing really changes. No matter how hard you seem to try, it feels like nothing is ever changing. No matter how much you bargain, make excuses, pray to forces beyond your control that may not even exist... it's all for nothing. I feel like that all the time, and... i'm not sure if it's true or not. I wish for a world with a happy ending... but fear that may not exist. I feel trapped, stuck down in my little room in my little house on my little computer talking about things that are out of my control. This song is haunting, and perhaps it is not spectacularly amazing like many other songs in the game, but the feelings it conveys are powerful and meaningful. There's next to nothing quite like it.
I feel you only got half the messages this song is trying to convey. Yes, we often plead to the heavens for good fortunes and may fall on deaf ears, we will never know. But this is our home, our eternal land. We can't let the dark dream, is our job as the chosen ones to strive for a better planet and humanity together.
I didn’t trust Indol the second I set foot there, and then the night version of the theme started playing and I was like “you are bad guys I just know it”
What can I say? It's the old "religious organization is hiding evil in plain sight" trope that has been around for decades in JRPG history. Though, unlike Shin Megami Tensei and how it treats its Law faction (often solely comprised of Judeo-Christian supernatural beings) as unambiguously evil, Alrest's religious organization is a far more accurate and mature portrayal of Catholicism, in that it was formed out of good will to help others, as well as having majorly contributed towards societal and scientific progress, in both the good and the bad.
The lyrics perfectly explains Indol’s imperialism with them trying to justify it with spreading their greatness. The way it shifts the narrative to it being a burden on Indol really parallels the history of real world colonialism.
Wow this makes so much sense. I personally felt the religious tones of the lyrics and music to be very eery and made me distrustful of the praetor. I feel like personal experiences really influence how one interprets this theme.
