I love this! The emotion and energy she puts into her singing makes one want to jump in the air and start praising one’s god. This is why I scroll UA-cam to search for things of this nature. Thanks for posting!!
I LOVE THIS SONG..My Mom and Dad Danced to this Song back in the day....Barbara Dane is in my head...This is REAL ROCK and ROLL......It needs to come BACK!!!....WOW A Blond With A Voice Like Etta James.....Barbara Keep Singing!!!Kev

I was kinda flabbergasted when I learned that this is actually a white girl - could've fooled me and I've heard a lot of soul. Great song! Thank you very much for posting!
I recently saw Barbara Dane perform at the San Francisco Jazz Center (along with a couple original Chambers Brothers) for her 90th birthday! Needless to say it wasn't some UK/Euro "popcorn/mod/northern soul" event. Well, it should be needless to say that,...to an American anyway.
This song is a very old "Negro" spiritual. The original lyrics were "I'm on my way to Canaan's land". Barbara did this in 1962 (not 1960). Barb will be 90 on 5-12.
MilwaukeeMark65 -- Thanks for the accurate information. At this writing, she will be 91 in about three months. Still going strong, just like her voice. An amazing voice.
Catching up on R& B that I missed as A War Baby in Oz. American music reminded me of my rascally father's country. AND then the British Musical Invasion took place...Americans turned their backs (mainly) on their own music. Two Limey Bands became the biggest ev=ah acts in music !!! I say !!!
Yes, this is the early I-hate-the-capitalist-system-Barbara-Dane! I wish, she had already sung lyrics like that in her early days ;-) Great popcorn classic here anyway!
Native Americans taught Europeans how to survive here in my Americas when they first arrived here 527 years ago and the Africans in America built the entire USA for Free through blood sweat and tears i,m Narragansett American Indian mix with that Mighty African and i love all good people but in short i been here since the iceage until it melted into slavery PEACE
I'm on my way and I won't turn back. I'm on my way and I won't turn back. I'm on my way great God I'm on my way. I'll ask my brother come go with me. I'm on my way great God I'm on my way. If he won't come I'll go alone. I'm on my way great God I'm on my way. I'll ask my sister come go with me. I'm on my way great God I'm on my way. If she won't come I'II go anyhow. I'm on my way great God I'm on my way. I'm on my way to the freedom land. I'm on my way great God I'm on my way. I'm on my way and I won't turn back. I'm on my way great God I'm on my way.
bill, is this one sped up lightly? other songs her voice sounds lower and the tempo is slower. another one I've been listening to nonstop for 5 years. even if it is its better this way.
I realize you made this comment years ago, but in 2018 Smithsonian/Folkways put out a Barbara Dane compilation. However if you're expecting it all to sound like this particular track you may be surprised. Most of her stuff is already available however.
This phenomenal interpreter of blues and gospel music and socialist campaigner is 96 years young (as at January 2024).✊

This is the song I listened to that gave me the courage to leave my abusive husband. That was 7 years ago. I still love this song.

Rest in peace Barbara Dane. What a lengthy history of song.
A freedom prophet with the power of song on her side. Rest in peace, Barbara Dane.
Just reading the news of Barbara's passing. A great lady, an amazing life lived, and this is a fantastic song.
I didn't really know of her, and I only just heard she had passed; R.I.P. Barbara.
Ain't no way I can sit still! Clap, tap my foot, I pulls at my emotions.
I love this! The emotion and energy she puts into her singing makes one want to jump in the air and start praising one’s god. This is why I scroll UA-cam to search for things of this nature. Thanks for posting!!

Barbara sang this song on the Alfred Hitchcock Hour episode 'Captive Audience'.
Agree. It was broadcast over here in France.
This song is a very old "Negro" spiritual. The original lyrics were "I'm on my way to Canaan's land". Barbara did this in 1962 (not 1960). Barb will be 90 on 5-12.

Mmmm ... nice!
WHAT! This wench white?? What a voice.
Ray Charles must have been popcorn music, too. But classy and sexy are not limitations to something soulful.
You're going with me.
Sound a bit like the Sidewinder, Lee Morgan , Blues, Gospel and jazz..
