- VW CADDY MAXI VAN BUILD
An introduction to my new van which I am converting so I can adventure to new places to wild camp. It will have some new unseen ideas that will spill from my brain to assist in making this the perfect vehicle to travel in as a micro camper. It’s exciting doing what I’m best at… designing and making cool shit👌.

The new van looks great brother! Those blackout panels that you made for the windows are awesome 👍 Definitely sounds like you have some really good and creative ideas for this build. Looking forward to following along and seeing what all you do man! Cheers!
me too - totally agree with the blackout panels awesome. Would love to know how you made those. Looking forward to the video on that. Good luck with the van conversion
That video is already out😉
This will be interesting as I researched vans for the exact same use,its taken me just shy of 2 years to get one that suits me. I ended up with a mpv citroen berlingo multispace. Removed the back seats completely and did the Same as you have regarding insulation etc. I made my blinds with black out fabric, insulation foil and felt as I wanted to ve able to roll them up for ease of storage. I made my single bed but made underneath storage ,3 sections and the bottom foot buy the back door I put extra wood on sliders to make my pull out kitchen that opens out on top of itself to make a usable big cooking and prep area, also the top of the bed folds up so you can access the kitchen from above aswell & storage, front & about. I put the same sized board on top of the bed part on piano hinges so that it opens out into a double bed.as everything I need storing is beneath my bed I have a load of space inside incase of rainy days etc. I also have solar and have put a inverter in so that I can use the fridge, which is also underneath my bed. I have a small table and also have made a small fold out one for the outside of the door in the summer. I've got a chair hammock that can hang in the door way from the side, I use self inflating mats for the bed mattresses as they fold away minimal. I have a curtain on a small track that goes across the bulkhead would be area as well as blinds as it just encloses it in more.i have a simple fold out loo,i use cat litter pellets! Brilliant. I have all the usual usb and electric/heater and all run off solar or power pack.cooker is gas and i can also warm things up in my fridge as it can heat aswell as cool 👍.Still.lots to do so looking forward to see what you do,p.s don't forget your fire extinguisher or blanket.also I have a flip up boot so it enables me come the summer to use it to full potential and use a portable shower and set up a small seating area.
Yes that’s pretty much everything covered. Thanks. It’s exciting designing it all and coming up with solutions to the problems 😬😬😬
@@BUSHMANandBLUE very exciting yes.
Wow, it's going to be fantastic, and I love how enthusiastic you are about this project! I've been researching vans for a few years now and have settled on the same VW Caddy Maxi as top of my list - perfect for one human, one canine out on the road exploring! I look forward to seeing the process!
Well I might inspire you with a few ideas😬
This is why I love UA-cam, coming across down to earth, genuine guys like you and being able to follow your adventure. Thumbs up from me and you’ve gained a new subscriber. Take care 👍
Sorry mate just seen this… welcome though and I hope you enjoy our adventures 👊
Good luck All. As a woman who enjoys diy designing and bedcover designs that i also make for us and some family members and friends, i understand your pride. I redesigned every room in our home for redecoration and upcycling 30 yr old wardrobes and dresser, etc. We carried out all the work ourselves in our now early 70s. In fact, i redesigned the decor in our large conservatory just this last week, and now we've almost finished it. Ppl who see it all are in ore of my designs and Terrys and my decorating skills. So i get you 100 %. Enjoy every minute All, and be very proud of your creations. We all have our unique talents naturally. Proud of you! I actually designed the conservatory, with Terrys acceptance 8 yrs ago. The ppl building it said my design would work. When they saw it coming together, the appologised and said it was amazing and could they take a pic for their catalogue. As they draughted the design for me, i agreed.
It’s the design and build I enjoy the most. Many of my ideas won’t get used but I love making my brain work to overcome problems. You obviously love it too😬
@BUSHMAN and BLUE Both Terry and I are the same. We complement eachother.
Exciting times ahead. Looking forward to the van conversion videos and new adventures to follow!
I like your videos. I finaly found the right iso that i was looking for. Thanks for that ( in your other video). I tip for a shower : Buy a small dog pool (there some foldable ones). those have also an outlet where you can just spill the water back in a bottle after . As a Shower Curtain you can buy some of those cheap foldable or with springs Tubes. for putting leafs and cutted grass.. put the pool inside and around you have that gardening thing.... and to have pressure you just need to fill your mix of warmed water and cold into the "Handpump Pressure" Bottle ( for use to spray chemicals) ... This way you just stand. or sit in your shower and can hold the Pump Pistol above you :). Later take all the water back and everything folded back in a small box . Works fine and warm inside the "tube" :)
Interesting thanks. I’ve a solar shower which works pretty well but a stream usually does the trick
Having converted a Caddy Maxi on a budget myself 4 years ago this is going to be very interesting. Wooden pallets are your biggest friend when you're on a budget, and stainless steel dog water bowls make great sinks!
Yes I have some great ideas already. Some upcycling for definite 👍.
A van is the best thing we ever bought!
We tour Europe each year and it’s by far, our favourite type of holiday!
Enjoy it 👍🏼
Looks great. Cant wait 👍🏼
The drone footage of Jack's Rake plus the peaceful music "just beautiful".
The diesel van is a nice choice. Here in Germany You're not allowed into every city though if you haven't got a 'green plaque' on your diesel
I think this is where my bike will come in. There are diff rules in each country but generally I’ll be out in the wild 😬
Wowww cant wait to see the progress and fab ideas,s x
This sounds great, USA here..been enjoying your past vids, and look forward to this build. ATB to you and Blue.. take care and be safe. 👍👍
Thanks mate👍👍👍
Good luck with the van build Al, can't wait to see the finished product mate
Congratulations on your new van and may you have many very happy adventures in it! Can't wait to see how you fit all of those big ideas into the conversion, we all know how creative you get with small spaces 😁.
I’ll see what I can do😬. Thanks Rach
Loving the van can't wait to see the conversion and all your adventures you have in it xx
Great find! Looking forward to the window blackout breakdown already.
Love your ideas for the van 🎉 definitely give you a wider area to explore 👍 LOVE all your videos and the scenery is always stunning 🤩
Thanks😊
You’ll love it Al. I converted a transit custom a few years ago and absolutely loved getting out. I sold it a couple of years back as it was my only vehicle and wasn’t practical for me to keep. I will definitely have another one day.
I’m sure I will. I will enjoy the designing stage most😬😬😬
Its awesome youve joined the vanlife movement! So excited to see what you do with it! I Went full time living in my Vauxhall vivaro in December and I'm absolutely loving it! Did all mine myself spent whilst living in it, spent about a grand at the most, it's the foam cut and covered to make the /double bed that was the biggest chunk!
Can't wait for the next episode 🙌
I have the bed sorted😉. I bet you are loving the simple life mate👊
Spot on, got to gey creative in a little space
Thanks mate. Yes I’ve come up with a good few ideas that hopefully will make the dream happen😬
Awesome van, it'll make a great camper. Window blinds are a great idea and I bet there's more lined up. Home from home!
Harrison trim supplies is your best friend.
👍👍👍
That last sequence...what it's all about. And the music too. Very haunting.
Just off one of my other videos
That's brilliant idea! Looking forward to seen the whole thing come together! One thing i will just make you aware of, is to change the cam-belt on a second hand vehicle ( unless you have genuine proof of a recent change) because if that snaps it will mean a new engine!
Yes definitely. It was done about 5k miles ago luckily👍
Cant wait to see the build man. Your other builds have been really cool so cant wait to see the designs you come up with :)
Cheers Rick. It’s what I’m best at I’d say 😬. Designing and making stuff😉
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Well i cant wait like i said. Im actually really into Vanbuilds so its exciting that you are building one since i have been following you for a long time and i kinda want to build my own Van aswell and last summer i almost went fulltime to live in a van but then somethings happend that made me put it off and now im saving up even more money and might go for it in 2024. My goal would be to drive around Europe and go for hikes and ofc in my own home country of Sweden, there are some epic trails here for sure and in Norway.
Thanks for your reply and hope all is well with you and your family, btw love your dad :D
Cheers
Love seeing your physical creativity and ingenuity. Definitely a gift that I do not possess. Thank you for sharing.
It’s definitely my strong point in life 😬😬😬
Looks a great van for your travels Al and an awesome price. Looking forward to your future adventures.
All the best! :)
Enjoy the project Al, looking forward seeing it progress.
That's quite a shopping list of requirements Al, looking forward to seeing it all come together.
😂yes I’ll fit it in😉
If it's not been already, I'd think about getting it remapped! Will be even better fuel wise and more horse power, nicer to drive. Also then you negate the common problem with caddys where the EGR valve or DPF goes. Have fun in your new van!
I’ve thought about it😉
Well done mate 👍, very cool, it's something I want to do, most of the other video I've watched use bigger vans but your choice of van suits me better, like you I need to carry my kayak, MTB and camping gear I just can't take my dog everywhere I go she's an old timer 17 years old jack Russell with very very short legs, so the camper will help, can't wait to see the future vids for the conversion, keep up the good work 👍
Looking forward to the van build. You and Blue inspired me to get out and see more of this beautiful country. First time in the lake district too. I've just bought my own campervan, you will love it.
Brilliant Ed. Keep getting out and about both in your camper and on foot👊
Great windowcover sollution ❤ i made it out off armaflex and black fabric
Best thing i did was buy a 2012 transit swb (in Nov 2021) and convert it myself, i have been going out in it every chance, i was up the lakes near Brotherswater last week, Staying at Sykeside, and i bumped into the guy you met at the top of Malham Cove last year, you surprised his wife for her birthday, He was saying how it made her day meeting you and she still talks about, Funny enough he also had just got a small van too, think he said he was 66 years old, l love the van i have made/converted, Looking forward to seeing what you do to the van.
What a lovely man he is! It was great meeting them both. It’s great doing the van build yourself though. It’s always a proud moment finishing a job 😬
Congratulations, I know it will be fantastic and comfortable when finished. 🎉
Looking forward to the rest of the series! Good work so far 👍
Myself and hubby converted a van. Loved it. Want another go lol.
Great Vid as ever Al, really looking forward to seeing wot U do with Ur van...👍 Superb touch at the end by adding that epic drone footage, for those of us in need of some amazing nature & really shows just how massively awesome these places are...!😯 I remember U lifting & chucking Blue over a few rocks on that climb, had to hold MY breath a few times, was great to watch, so guess I'm probably gonna have to rewatch some previous Vids now while U build ya Camper...!😄 Inspirational...👍👊
Thanks Kev. Hopefully I’ll get to amazing new places to make some better vids😬
Good luck with the new van mate. They really are a game changer .
Loving this buddy…. I’m really looking forward to watching this journey… as for me the VW caddy is my choice of van to convert… so perfect ! Good luck with the conversion bud… cheers Mark
Thanks mate. It should be good 😬
Great shots of Jack’s Rake looking forward to seeing the van “grow”👍 Had a job getting up there myself let alone take a dog up hats off.
It was a great adventure that. Taken from one of my older videos 👌
Loved this. I thought Alfred Hitchcock was the MASTER of suspense. Can't wait for the next video. Be safe.
😂😂😂
I’m intrigued as to how you will fit all that is on your wish list into the van. Looking forward to following your progress.
The compromise might be that I won’t fit😂
Looking forward to seeing the out come and transformation 👍
Congratulations Al…. She’s a pretty one.
Love it can't wait to see your van journey. Have a great week .
Good on ya, I’ve got a Peugeot Bipper I converted myself a few yrs back and it’s a game changer, park it in the tightest of locations and get me head down for the night, good luck on the conversion 🥾⛰⛺️👌
Thanks Paul. A small van definitely has its benefits 😉
Nice one BUSHMAN and BLUE...Looking forward to watching the build 🙂
Enjoy your shows. Have fun tweaking out the van.
Love it Al can’t wait to see it all done will be following the build 👍👏👏👏hope it all goes smoothly 😊
As long as the engine holds up it should be fine😬
NOT what I was expecting...thought we’d be seeing at least a transporter for the head room. I’m loving the traditional window wonders...1 less electrical unit to worry about especially in colder weather. Looking forward eagerly to see the storage solution...the biggest conundrum of any smaller vehicle build. Outside shower ain’t hard...run it off the pump & water supply from your kitchen. Lil’ chop with a recip saw & access granted.
Can’t wait for the finished product mate...great things coming.
ATB. .Wish.
I need it to be my daily driver so small van it is (which is also more stealth). I might design a solar shower and have cold showers most of the time😂😂😂
@@BUSHMANandBLUE well...that'll wake you up in the morning quicker than a triple expresso...!
😂 both and I’ll be bouncing😉
I have a defender 110 which I love as it allows me to explore anywhere legal, kitted as a basic camper. I have curtains at the moment, so I like the sound of your blackouts and look forward to more info. I’m sure I will be copying some of your ideas! Ps a small 2 kw diesel heater is an absolute game changer for winter use.
I miss my 110. I was hoping a candle would be enough to heat it😂
@@BUSHMANandBLUE well I know you and Blue are immune to the cold, but I’m too old now!!
Another amazing video super hyped to see this project finished cant wait jeep up the great work al 🧡🧡
Thanks Si. I’m enjoying the build so far😬
Got myself a vw t2 Brazilian Campervan last year best thing I’ve ever done look forward to see your amazing plan’s you have for the van conversion the toilet is a must mate especially if the other half is going to be going on your amazing journey’s we have a lpg underslung gas tank for heating and are cooker maybe worth considering we also have solar panel for the roof just waiting for better weather as it needs to be fixed to the roof with adhesive good luck on your new van conversion 🚐 👍
I bought 1. Only took me 2 days lol 😂 good car for this purpose.
SHOWER IDEA - Portable "Karcher" jet wash. Very small and semi powerful. Runs off its own Lithium Battery 5L tank I think. Can put warm water in tank and blast self in makeshift cubicle at back of van?! Also, can wash bike as originally intended.....
Yes I think a little 12v pump would be best. I’ve seen a few I like. I’ll check that one out thanks 👍
I'm excited for you. I would prefer manual windows over electric cuz if the battery goes out you're stuck.
Yes I agree. They are easier than electric to adjust perfectly for under the wind deflectors to ventilate too👌
Great stuff Alan . Fantastic man hope the van works out mint for ya . 👍
Awsome stuff, just bought a new van, looking forward to seeing the finished, as my needs are near exact to yours, thanks
You might get an idea or two 😉👍
@@BUSHMANandBLUE, cheers mate will send my un educational pictures, did a few years back in the day teaching stuff
Look forward to seeing the journey of your building your van mate!
Can't wait to see how it turns out, sounds really awesome!!
You are fun to listen to. Very clear description.
Lucky because I do waffle on 😂😂😂.
Awesome base for a camper! Love your ideas. Looking forward to the next one.
You are mentioning the word stealth a lot 😫😫😫!!!!!
Great choice of van❤ and that really is a bargain! I have a caddy too same age and mileage though not a maxi and it’s my work van so I just throw a mattress in the back for stealth camping and normal camping… it’s great to drive and everything’s sorted but sadly I have to sell it because I work in the ulez zone… gutted 😭 my other van is a vw t2 50 years old and is bizarrely ulez compliant ! But it’s a rust bucket and will be selling that to fund an up grade to a euro 6 caddy maxi. So I’ll be watching your conversion journey!
Top tip is to use it as a camper right now so you can work out what you really need. I like the idea of a minimum build portable solar electric system… saves on space and money and effort!
I’ll keep it simple so it’s easy to manage when using it. You’ll have to do a conversion 😉
Looking forward to seeing how this turns out 🙂
Can't wait for the next video, exciting stuff Al. 😁
Look forward 2 Ur van build👍 I've got my 1st trip next week a simple 3days chill was considering gettin a Jimny jeep but I think I'll go 4 d Diahthsu or Berlingo and make my own minimalist conversion 👍 Good video 👍
I'm super excited for you!
Looking forward to the coming episodes.
Great video! Looking forward to the build!! I need to know where you are in the end of the video. That cliff walk looks amazing!! 23:06
I'm excited about this build, Mate. Too many ideas and I'm already struggling to think how you'll fit it in there, including your bike. I can't wait to see the final outcome.
😂 I’ll have to buy a clowns bike. I think I’ll sort it😉
@@BUSHMANandBLUE probably a folding bike 😅
Can’t wait to see the final product!
Good luck with van can’t wait to see it finished I love your ideas and will inspire other van conversions I’m sure .if you think your idea is unique try and patent it as your own ALB mint as always 👏👍
Hopefully I might give others some ideas. It all helps the community😬
I made flexi black outs for my c3 Picasso insulated with a nice green chenille on the inside. Made the flexi to help with easy storage. I was chuffed with myself too 😆. Think I must be the only Picasso with them and be the only one nuts enough to sleep and carry my kayaking stuff in. Can’t afford a van at mo so my car does the job for now for me and my dog. Look forward to all you do
Modest Al - not used to hearing you tell us how brilliant and wonderful you are 😎... but having said that those window shades are inspired! They certainly beat the roughly cut out with scissors floppy bits of windscreen protector, with velcro, that I use in my Suzuki when I'm kipping in the back. 🤩
Designing and making things is what I’m best at or what I enjoy most😬
Great project, looking forward to the conversion, good luck
By heck lad you can turn ur hand to anything! Looking forward to you doing the conversion and I am sure blue will enjoy his home from home 👍
It should be good 😬
@@BUSHMANandBLUE I’m sure it will be brilliant
Cannot wait to see how Nicola deals with this!!. Top peeps, we love you all❤️🐶 🐐 xx
😂 it’s not a hotel so it’s ‘iffy’ ground😂
Looking forward to this journey 👍🏼
Looking forward to this build Al.....loved the drne footage of PA :-)
Nice one Mr B. Looking forward to this project. All the best with it 👌🏻
I will be watching this with interest as this is something Im looking to do in the future... Total costing from yourself would be great in your further vids on this conversion.
There is definitely many costs but I’ll try keep a tally👌
@@BUSHMANandBLUE You did give a costing you were aiming for in kitting the van put and its probably about the same as I'd want to spend on kitting mine out..Good luck an I look fwd to more of your content on this build🤙
Damn that’s cool! I’m excited to see more of the U.K. and Europe vicariously through y’all.
I can’t complain though Utah and the surrounding states are phenomenal. But you give me FOMO when I see your videos lol.
Utah has been hammered this year in a positive way. Brighton has had 16 meters of snow since Oct. the snowmobiling had been amazing this year.
However, I’ve never wanted to visit the U.K. more than I do right now due to your Lake District vids.
Keep up the great work!
FOMO is just another word for getting on with it yourself. You’ll have to pay a visit😬😬😬
Sounds about right haha.
Just too much to do and see on this side of the pond.
Maybe after the Tuktoyaktuk trip.
First world problems eh.
Great to see you back..
Same as my work van!
Looking good be nice to follow this an see how it ends up.👍
Ayup Al! Loving th3 new venture with the campervan. I've just finished converting my VW Crafter after a year of building. Cannot wait for spring to get out in it! Looking forward to seeing the build and the adventures and if you ever want to exchange ideas just let me know! 👌
Thanks buddy. They are worth all the hard work and money. You just have to get out and use it😬
Different adventures, Lets gooooo. Also i want them window covers instead of curtains in my house 😁
They definitely work well😉
Looking forward to more adventures. Very jealous of your van! Great content as always.
Yes plenty of.."too good to be true"..offers. Then they say we have to trust each other..etc....stay clear..
A cover over those solar panels will disguise them. I know it's gonna rock.
I’ll definitely keep it fairly stealth 🥷
Great video Al lad and I am looking forward to see the caddy grow into a luxury sleep system. The stay safe aware online is a great tip aswell as I was looking for a little runaround that was to good to be true and due to it been so cheap, I got the bull💩 about lot of interest, put a deposit on it to secure a viewing and if you don't like the car you will get it sent back and yeah, not a normal profile so yeah, stay safe online folks. Love the ending Al with superb drone footage, Blue defo wants to eat the Drone.😂Lol. Keep up the good work fella.
Yes scammers in life need to have a word. When scamming my mum at 82… that’s when harsher punishments need to be given
@@BUSHMANandBLUE indeed fella a d I totally agree lit of scumbags out there. luckily now have mother in law who always checks with me or my wife before she acts upon calls etc. Hope all is well with yours fella.
Have a great time converting. Look to watching the progress 👍
It’s my dream doing this😬
Really looking forward to the videos on this van build it's going to be amazing 👊👍🥃
Hopefully! I just enjoy designing and making cool shit😬😬😬
One little tip for the 1.6 is get aa parts and garage cover. I have a BG one and the injectors have gone twice. Its very common on the 1.6, Looking forward to seeing how you set this up.
Yes mate someone else mentioned that as a way of getting it sorted if needed. Thanks👊
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Should of mentioned if you do it via topcash back its only about £90 for the full cover
I always carry a spare injector or two and the tools to replace them . They are not cheap , if you are in the middle of nowhere then they are a godsent . Had three go down in two years .
If I was in Europe then wound be a good idea👌👌👌
These caddy maxis would also be my preferred choice. Can still daily drive as a normal car and good on fuel, aero Dynamic etc. Doesn't have the height but the length is good.
Exactly and I need it as my daily driver too👍
Nice Van for a project Al. Always remember measure twice cut once....lol Good luck on the project I'm sure you'll make it nice. I liked the yurt you built in back yard that was cool 👍👍
😂😂😂 yes that’s definitely one saying I use and still fail with at times😂😂😂
hi Allen their company and site here in the states sell kits to do the van and nice ideas most of them are in California they got frame that is place in space you build of it as you need it frame slide in and you mount then add as you want
I like the color white VW excellent make... good luck Allen its nice move yup on road again look for frame kit then just add to it as you need want even convert for type of camping setup you need best of lucky Allen My advice take your time doing the build so you get max of space and value.🚙 see massive crack at ledge one day drop entire side of mountain hate to be any place near it nice video shots
Thanks mate. Yes I need my van to be a van at times so anything I put in it need to be removable which adds complexity to my build. So I’ll be thinking of simple not permanent items to use. It will definitely take some time to build😂
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Allen I think this frames removable it mounts in side its like box that fit in nice idea build the frame so it can be load unload and everything is made into frame interesting well I think you got excellent deal on that van really and it in awesome good condition you and blue will have great time now all you need is to teach blue to drive it your all set
Good interesting video mate, I came across your channel when I was searching Malham cove to make a video myself.
New sub here, you have some good videos that I'll catch up on.
👍
