  • Should you test your embryos? Every decision can be so heavy when navigating IVF, and this is such a personal decision. I can only speak from my experience in which I navigated PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies) or PGS (Preimplantation Genetic Screening) during my 5th IVF egg retrieval. Hopefully, my story will shed some light.
    In this video, I share the 'who, what, when, how much, and why' for PGT-A at my hospital. I also share the timeline for getting PGT for your embryos. Mostly, I share my very personal experience in how I came to my sudden decision to test my embryos during this round, and my thought process through it all.
    Whether PGT is practical or not in IVF is a huge topic of debate among fertility doctors in recent years due to findings that PGT-abnormal embryos can potentially self-correct. Read more here: www.rockefeller.edu/news/3052...

    (Disclaimer: I am neither for or against PGT. Please talk to your doctor to make this very personal decision.)
    Watch the video about my infertility story and how I came to Korea for IVF: • My Infertility Story |...
    About me ❤
    My name is Hellynn and live in the US, but I've traveled to Korea (where I'm from) to undergo multiple rounds of IVF. Being 40 and trying to bring children into the world is hard, but I also have a condition called diminished ovarian reserve so I'm doing back-to-back IVF egg retrievals.
    Navigating this world of infertility is definitely a challenge - a million new acronyms, hormones and protocols to learn - it's a lot. So I thought I'd just talk about everything I've been learning for the women out there who have had similar struggles. I'm also happy to share info with anyone who is interested in traveling to Korea for IVF, since it's much more cost efficient + high success rates here.
    I am treating this YT channel as my diary, talking about the ups and downs of my journey to motherhood so that one day, hopefully, my babies will see how they were created... with fierce, enduring strength and love.
    I hope you find my videos helpful - thanks for stopping by.

    Going through IVF myself and having done PGT-A to all my embryos, I can suggest all women over 35 to do it. Absolutely everyone! As you mentioned yourself, those embryos that have some certain syndromes will never self correct. Does someone want to transfer an embryo with Down syndrome, for instance? Secondly, only mosaic embryos with low level of mosaicism can self correct. 100% aneuploid embryos aren’t able to do it. You can discuss it with a geneticist. So, in my particular case, only 3 out of 7 perfect embryos were genetically perfect, and one had low level of mosaicism. My husband and I have no genetic abnormalities and even obvious reasons for infertility, but because we’re over 40 our doctor recommended us to do it. I didn’t hesitate even for a second. Of course, we all need to do PGT-A once such a technology is available these days. Thirdly, you can do biopsy to all your embryos, freeze them and then test biopsy (not embryos themselves) one after another before a transfer (minimum two weeks before a start of transfer prep). We did it in such a way. I’m happy that you’ve tested your embryos. I don’t wish anyone to go through all these hormonal rollercoasters for nothing. Once an embryo is abnormal there’s no chance to conceive. Even if our embryos are genetically normal, it doesn’t guarantee the positive result. Unfortunately, I talk from my experience. Anyway, let’s stay positive and good luck to all of us 🤞🏻 😊. Hope to see your videos with a baby ❤

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Your perspective really matters. I do understand that those over 35 have a much higher risk. The way that my doc explained it was.. if they're abnormal, they will most likely not stick or miscarry early and we can let nature take its course, but I do understand that the risk is there and the time waste is real. He's also factoring in the fact that we are transferring multiples. Anyway, I really appreciate your viewpoint and will take it all into consideration before my transfer next year. There is certainly a lot to think about. Thank you so much for sharing your story and I hope I can show you a baby soon too ❤

      This is not necessarily true, it depends which trisomy is affected. There are plenty of women who have success stories of aneuploid embryos becoming healthy children. And some of these failed with their euploids before moving to the aneuploids. It’s more common with mosaics but it’s not 100% no chance. As she says in the video the cells they test are from what becomes the placenta, it’s not possible to test the cells that will be the baby. So even if they are full abnormal that might just be a part of the placenta and the baby is fine. If the trisomy is one that could affect the quality of life you could test in early pregnancy to see if it persisted and could terminate if you decided you didnt want to risk it

    I experience the same that the clinic won't tell you about the PGTA because it is actually not good for every case. In the UK it is a test that has an alarming sign because it does not guarantee for sure that the ruled-out embryos is the bad one, there are chances that you rule out the good one too. But If you are over 40s and lucky to have embryos that passed the test. This case will decrease the chance of miscarriage ( OMG..we are on such a complex journey) I am back here again Hellyn. Sending you big big big hug and wish you the normal PGT result. I will come back and check on you.

      Hi there! So good to hear from you again. Yes.. PGTA is so controversial nowadays in the fertility world, so even as I was making this video I went back and forth because I keep wavering. Ill keep you updated on my results and aftermath... thank you for listening to my story❤❤❤

    I am banking my embryos. I PGT-A tested my embryos last cycle when I had 4 embryos. 2 made it to day 5 and one normal. Yay! This cycle I only have two embryos and was recommended to freeze at day 3 since even a healthy embryo may not make it to day 5. So these embryos will not be tested. Good luck to all!

      @hellynn_j  4 місяці тому

      Thank you for sharing! Wow, I am so happy for your euploid! This is actually really helpful information - I've heard of freezing at day 3 so that it has a better chance in utero, and that it's a strategy for advanced maternal age.

    It's different for everyone! PGT makes sense for some women, not so much for others... it all depends on what type of infertility, age, other risks.

    • @annakhan267
      @annakhan267 7 місяців тому +1

      No, it’s not! All women over 35 years old should do PGT. It doesn’t matter what type of infertility or potential risk a couple has. Check out percentage of aneuploidy detected in women of 35 years and older. The chance of chromosomal aneuploidy increases as the mother's age increases.

    I am AMA and DOR, I plan to do IVF the spring 2024. After a lot of research, I have decided to not test just be cause of the odd of making enough embryos. It is tough, but I hope to not deal with miscarriages.

    • @hellynn_j
      @hellynn_j  6 місяців тому

      Hi there. My protocol always changed based on scans.. there was never a set protocol. I think Korea is good at checking on the spot and prescribing meds on the spot so that you don't need to adhere to a specific protocol post stimulation phase. I will make a video on my meds and dosage sometime soon🙂

    I think the worst part of PGT testing is the long waiting period. I was fine with the injections and egg retrieval but the two weeks was mentally and emotional tortuous

      I actually talk about the worst part for me in the video I'm editing right now to put up next.. but I agree that any kind of waiting for news during IVF or pregnancy in general is torment!

      My daughter in law was 35 years old when she went through IVF. She had 3 good embryos. She had chromosomes testing on those 3 embryos, 2 boys and 1 girl. The 2 boys embryos were negative for chromosomal problems but the girl embryo has Down syndrome and was discarded . She had FET on the boys embryos 2 years apart. Now, we have 2 boys , 5 year old and a 3 year old, both are healthy.
