For the record I walked around the block about 1.5 miles for the sake of time I didn't record this because its about 40 minutes doubt anyone wants to watch this. I said I would update since this video I have traveled with it went hiking for 3 hours in the rain video is up jacket kept me dry. Some of you need to chill I dont recommend a product walking down my driveway and back
Is it still going strong?
Yes I actually used it yesterday we were out camping in the rv and it was raining while I had to be outside to put everything away.
I wore this over an Atom LT for a week of hiking in Ireland where the rain would come and go abruptly. It was perfect.
If I see my neighbors playing in the rain, I now know, that they are making a UA-cam video. 😝
Nice to see some real world usage testing. After reading over the online reviews, I did buy this product. I took it to a destination well known for quick rain (New Zealand) and it worked wonderfully. It’s also great with a fleece layer below it for the cool days. I do heat up faster than some, but the pit-zips make a big difference. If you keep an eye out, the coat does go on sale. But even if its a bit premium, you get what you pay for.
Thank you very much glad to hear your enjoying the jacket you are correct you get what you pay for.
Hey! Those elastic chords near the neck are innovative hidden sinches for the hood. If you feel inside the casing near the sides of the hood you’ll find the push button adjusters for them. That way you can tighten the hood so it form fits your head and moves side to side with it
Awsome! Thank you for the info. I went to the jacket and yup there is a sinch hidden in there. Took me a minute to find the push botton on the side of it to release it lol. Thought I messed it up. Great info now I know Thank you
That's some rain !!
I have one, I like it... only wore it a couple of times, so it was mainly in my closet. Just gifted it to my girlfriend, we live in Oregon.
Thank you for the comprehensive review. I like what this jacket has to offer at this price point. It isn't cheap, but it also isn't too expensive. I have a North Face rain shell that I bought last year and it is a major disappointment. Crappy hood, crappy zippers and no pit vents. This jacket looks much better and has a great hood design. I'm sold.
Thank you for the great comment. I believe you will be happy with it. Its my choice for my thru hike on the Appalachian trail this year. Its heavier and bit bigger than what most back packers will carry I know it will keep me dry, and will last the trip as well.as being a nice looking layer of clothing if I need something extra.
@@L2theWcarscoffeelife yes, it is a bit on the bulky side. I don't mind a little extra size and weight if the trade-off is a better quality and longer lasting garment.
Absolutely and Patagonia stands behind thier products for life its hard to beat that
It isn’t cheap? 1/3 price of a Gore-Tex
« i don’t want to be wet anymore » I can feel you bro
Rite on bro she's a keeper. I totally agree with you getting wet in the rain sucks and or when your working to fix anything while camping or on the road. Do believe that rain jacket belongs in every motorhome and another in your backpack when hiking in a wet climate zone.
Almost needed it on this last camping trip luckily every time I needed to be outside it stopped. I am sure I will need it before long lol or maybe never now I am prepared
thanks for the honest review. i would also be interested in a review of rain pants
Thanks for the suggestion. I do have the pants they are nice the legs unzip so you can put them on without taking your shoes off and you can vent them as well. I didn't have them when I made this but thats a good idea.
I've got the jacket. Love it but it only keeps you dry for a certain amount of time before water comes through. Personally I'd spend more money on a goretex one like the Patagonia calcite. However.this is a great jacket for limited time in the rain. I use mine for walks or on my mountain bike.
After how long does water do trough?
@@maromorostar6621 I just did a 3 hour hike and no water seeped through this is not a cheap jacket that allows water in when its touched.
I've had this jacket for about 2-3 months now and we've had A LOT of rain here in New England this spring. I have not had this experience at all. Mine has kept me perfectly bone dry in even the heaviest of rain while out running or walking my dogs. Are you sure that you got an authentic Patagonia? There are A LOT of knockoff jackets out there, especially of brands like Patagonia, North Face, Columbia, etc. I would contact Patagonia directly if yours is soaking through like that, because that should definitely not be happening with a higher end rain jacket like this. They do have a lifetime warranty on their products.
thankyou, i always wonder about this, the need for GoreTex ... i have a jacket that after time soaks the wet which is strange...
It really isn’t pricey compared to other good hiking rain jackets. In fact it’s a good value for the performance and quality. You can easily spend $300-$400, and even more, on a truly high end rain jacket.
I think its fairly priced too and you get a company that stands behind thier products with a great warranty as well
@@L2theWcarscoffeelife yes I agree and that warranty is very important. I have three or four Patagonia items of clothing, including that raincoat. They are all well-made and functional. You get what you pay for
great review, love your honesty, wishing you safe travels
Thank you very much I pride myself on honesty.
@@L2theWcarscoffeelifewhat’s the sizing like? Cheers
Jacket is now on final sale at around $105. It is being discontinued and the type of waterproof coating it uses is being discontinued due to environmental concerns. There don't seem to be replacement coatings currently that will be as good. Buy now if you want it or similar high quality rain wear.
Okay I demand a trash bag and duct tape review lol 😂
Lmao! Let me think about that one
Great review. Thank you.
I love my Patagonia Torrentshell. Only complaint is it can get kinda hot but with pit zips and stuff that’s an easy fix. I wish I’d have spent the extra $50 and gotten the Patagonia Calcite, which is Gore-Tex where the Torrentshell is h2n0 (patagonias version of gore-tex)
Yeah all raincoats get a bit warm nature of being waterproof yes the pit zips work pretty good also makes a good layer over a jacket in the cold breaks the wind nicely. I never saw the other one this was already more than I wanted to pay its a great jacket thank you very much for watching and the comment
Do you happen to know what other patagonia jackets are true gore tex?
Why do you want to pay more just for “Gore-Tex” when Patagonia’s H2N0 is objectively just as good if not better, and cheaper… if you truly care about a jacket that is 100% waterproof the Torrentshell is great. I’m not sure if you’re aware but there are many different kinds of “Gore-Tex” and many of them are not 100% waterproof. If you want something that is breathable that is a different story.
And the calcite is a bit more just 50. Isn’t it 299.00 compared to 150.00?
i would love an explanation as to why use the Calcite rather than the Torrentshell please ? Thankyou
You pay for what you get. Have a great trip. I just purchased it women’s we are going to Iceland. I also got the puffer jacket from Patagonia. Folks say to layer so I’m sure I will be well protected and warm.
Wow nice trip! The rain coat alone will be warm its a nice wind break paired with the puff jacket you should be good to go I have a Patagonia puff also they are very nice!
Wow thanks for the fast reply. So I had to purchase mine and my daughters. Good info about being warm with just the rain coat!
@@2koda1 no problem I appreciate you watching the video and the comment.
Thanks for the review!
Thank you for watching and the comment
I didn't read through all 100+ comments so forgive me if this was covered. Are all the seams coated on the inside (100%)? This will really add to the waterproofing. If not get the liquid glue designed for this use. I don't like the tape products as they require you iron them to secure to jacket thus there is risk of damage to the (typically) nylon. Good r3view.
Great review sir 🙏🏼
Thank you very much
Lol you should be able to test a lot of rain jackets with all the rain we have been having
I know it lol manufacturers can feel free to send them :)
Just got one today! Thanks for the review
Congrats they seem like very good jackets I had to return my wifes it was too tight. Excellent customer service shipped it back almost immediately had a new one coming
@@L2theWcarscoffeelife they should mention that in the description. This particular jacket is definitely made VERY trim. I’m pretty lanky and it’s almost like they form-fitted it to my body but if I were more stout it wouldn’t fit me anywhere cause it’s so molded as is.
meanwhile us students use a trashbag with duct tape. Thank you for the review
lol about as good as the ponchos the Army gave us when you graduate you will buy one even nicer :)
Buying one of these is so worth the money when you take into account it has a lifetime warranty. If it ever breaks you just mail it in and if they can’t fix it they replace it. A lot of these brands do that though like Mountain Hardware and Arc’Teryx.
I wore my new Torrentshell for the first time last night...45F, low activity, not overheating or very warm, medium level of rain, 40 minutes. At home I saw the fabric had wetted out where my pack straps were (thin Kanken straps, pack almost empty) and all over my back where the pack was, plus in circles around the pit zips. Inside was dry but the pit zips were damp - I had closed the zippers all the way up to the top. Is this normal? I was walking, arms down. I figure you would know. I'd appreciate your input! I can't imagine wearing this on a long-distance hike in a torrential downpour (the irony..).
I think any item jacket that has a pack on it rubbing away at the dwr finish is going to allow water in kinda like a tent dont touch it if its wet. I dont think they market it towards backpackers but it is disappointing if it will let water in thats one reason I bought it was for back packing. I have not gotten wet in the pit zip area i can see where water could come in if they are open but I guess its a trade off to cool down you might let some water in you do perspire wearing a jacket if your not feeling cold rain water it might just be some sweat.
It might be that when the cloth is placed under pressure against your skin, and you sweat, the moisture cannot evaporate through the cloth, instead it wets your clothes.
I like a guy with a perfect good rain jacket in the rain and on sandels... Could be me in summer.
Flap is called a storm flap
Appreciate the thorough, hands on review. I just ordered the Torrentshell for my upcoming Ireland trek. How do you find it now after some practical use? Thanks for your video!
It has not disappointed me or the wife at all. Its a solid jacket nice thing is it looks good so you can wear it as a windbreaker as well. We have been very happy with them I have done some backpacking with it as well the pit zips are great.
Thanks for the detailed review. How did you find the size? As in, was it true to the charts, or did it wear bigger/smaller than what you thought?
Thank you for watching and the comment the size runs true to what you normally wear. Good thing is Patagonia is amazing. I ordered a small for wife for some reason they swapped it no problem.
You are a great reviewer. I subscribed! I have never opened up the under arm zips… you are a beast haha
thank you very much
I wonder if you put cool rags in that zipper vent part to regulate body temp. Just a thought
Possibly. Actually feels pretty good when you open the zippers up.
I have one. It is good. Durable. Kinda old school no non sense functionality. I use it for backpacking. It’s not the lightest, but I appreciate the durability when Im pushing through brush. It could be more compressible. Nice zippers.
I just did a 3 hour hike with it and stayed dry. I am planning a Appalachian trail through hike and i agree I wish it was lighter and less bulky but overall I have confidence this will keep me dry and warm if I need something to block the wind. Thank you for watching and the comment
@@L2theWcarscoffeelife How is the jacket holding up? I'm debating it and the Marmot minimalist jacket
@@Mrgreenyfed so far I have no complaints I have hiked with it on it has traveled with me and the wife she has one too. It has held up nicely. I was looking at the outdoor research helium because it was lighter I like the pit zips and having pockets its definitely handy especially if using it as a layer for wind protection.
Love the review. You are now 3 years in. Any update?
Thank you its still a great jacket it has held up nice I dont use it daily or a whole lot any time I travel it comes with me so far so good its very durable
I work outside In the summer and it gets hot, which one of these jackets should I get? I saw someone mentioned the calcite one.. which one is better for it being hot outside also while it pouring?
Sorry I dont have any experience with the calcite version. The torrent shell is a bit on the thicker side I can say that much. I have the Montbelle Vetsalite I did a review on its a lot thinner and cooler feeling but is a bit more expensive.
i also consider to buy it, how much did you buy it? I have had an experience riding a bicycle with heavy rain for two hours and my body and clothes were all wet, even underwear😂,and I can barely saw the road while riding. I think this is life saver to me.
I dont remember what I paid I am sure it has gone up like everything else tight now they do run sales and have a used department that sell very nice clothes that were returned I bought a puff jacket that way looked new to me
@@L2theWcarscoffeelife i went to the outlet today, and its price was 118 USD, definitely will get it soon. Thanks for your recommadation in your video.
Hello, mind if I ask which jacket do you recommend the mont bell versalite or Patagonia torrent shell? Thxx
I think it depends what your looking for. The Montbelle is lighter so not as hot, its less durable and costs a good bit more than the Patagonia. If you need the space or less weight Montbelle is for you
If you dont mind something slightly larger and heavier the Patagonia all day because of the price savings and its a bit more durable it should last longer
Have you tried Columbia out dry?
No I have not I do have a review on the Montbelle Versalite very lightweight rain jacket and pants
Where did you get that Royal Blue? They don’t have that color option in Patagonia website and in Rei.
I purchased it on the Patagonia website its Andes blue I actually waited for it to come in they had it in other sizes.
your size and jacket size.. I can only order online so cannot try on...
thanks.
I am 6ft 1 250 lbs not skinny lol its the xl no worries Patagonia is great to deal with I bought my wife a small and it was too tight we sent it back no problem exchanged it for a medium.
Just ordered in grey. I can’t justify the $300 for the Calcite or even higher for other models. I’m in Orlando so will get it well tested soon enough I’m sure. ❤ Thanks for the review.
Yeah thats expensive you should be happy with this its a great jacket.
@@L2theWcarscoffeelife the Calcite must have gone up in price….like everything in life.
Unfortunately 😥 the Torrent shell is a great jacket and you can always trade in with Patagonia too or rei if you go with them.
Nice video .... what size did you buy compared to your height / weight? Just curious for my own future purchase.
At 6ft 1 200 pounds I got the xl
@@L2theWcarscoffeelife We are the same size! lol. With a sweatshirt or puff jacket on underneath, my fear is it will be tight or binding for me. Going to Switzerland (cold 30-40's) & Italy (60-75's) in mid May so I ordered both XL & XXL at the advice of the Patagonia customer service with the free return tag once I decide which one to keep. I appreciate your video.
Hi, what size is your one?
I have the x large
the keepers are hidden in the fabric, feel around
Thank you someone told me and I found them. Pretty cool feature
how do you reactivate the DWR cooating?
@Pasequale100 believe it or not most coatings say to put it in the dryer on low for a little bit I dont remember if that's what Patagonia said to do or not I dont know what I did the instructions I know Montbelle said to but that just makes me nervous
@@L2theWcarscoffeelife what makes you nervous bro?
@Pasequale100 melting an expensive rain jacket in a dryer lol
@@L2theWcarscoffeelife ah but you did it no?
@Pasequale100 nope my coating is still good no need to
This jacket is nowhere to get in ANDES BLUE. It sucks so hard.
Dang, maybe it will come back or try the used gear store the have I got my puff jacket that way saved some money and it was like brand new.
you cant assess if a rainjacket is waterproof by standing in very moderate rain for 2 minutes... you need to hike with it... with a backpack rubbing on your shoulders.. for the rest, nice clear review!!
So you want me to make the video an hour long so you can watch me walk a mile and half around the block? You would watch that?
Not shit, sherlock. I'm pretty sure he knows that. This was just a brief, general overview of the jacket that is meant to be condensed and straight to the point, which is what most people want in a review. Nobody wants to sit and watch someone walking in the rain for hours......
