I feel a whole lot easier now knowing I have a UV filter on the front of this lens. Might head out more often with it now with a bit more confidence 🙏📸
Thanks for watching - I think it gives me more confidence when I have a UV on. I don’t have that niggling “what if” going on in my head. I can concentrate on photos 👍🙏
Yep!! I make sure I have a UV on all of my lenses. Hoya make a UV & IR filter and I have one of those too for my 24-200 Z lens. Light is restricted to 390 to 720 nm light and that theoretically should give a cleaner image. Cheers!
Great tip and perfect way to protect a valuable piece of equipment in your kit. It would help with the resale price of the lens too if you ever go to sell it down the track. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Adrian, really an interesting video, buddy! As the lens hoods of such long lenses tend to be quite big on long as well, I would rate the lens hood itself already as kind of "protection". But that at least for landscape photography in open terrain 🙂 But I can imagine, you can have bad luck, of course, by getting a small branch with the "right" angle into the lens while following a bird into the bushes. Then you are definitely lucky when you had an UV filter screwed on 🙂 Thank you for the video and nice greetings, Christian
Thanks for watching Christian. Having the UV does improve the image quality slightly and even with the large lens hood I would still have one on for piece of mind. There are times I take the lens hood off. Crazy how the front of the lens of just so susceptible to damage. Have a great week buddy cheers
Thank you for watching Phil. That did surprise me a little how the image quality does improve. Always best to be safe than sorry for the small amount of dollars. Cheers mate
I use a Nikon and Lowepro bag. However and it's funny you should ask this question. I have a new bag coming to me to review in the next 2 weeks. From what I've read it's pretty amazing. Stay tuned for the review video, cheers 📸🙏
I have tried several filters on this lens. The only issue I have run into is with CPL filters as the filter thread is recessed on this lens they can be difficult to remove.

Great tip and info Adrian for that massive lens. Love your story and lucky break. Many thanks for sharing the info - have a great week.
That is exactly why i always protect my lenses with uv filters. And I am always surprised when i hear professional photographers saying not to use uv filters on lenses and simply rely on your lens hood.. claiming that uv filters create flares and unsharp images… well i can’t say i ever experienced any problems with my uv filter protected lenses!! But then again i do buy quality uv filters 😉👌
Good video. How does this compare with the Nikon Arcrest filter?? I did get this lens and using a Hoya UV currently. Use Nikon with the 500PF, 400/4.5 and 600/6.3, but the Nikon is Protection only without UV. Do you have a view on which has the best light transmission? Thanks.
Can’t really give an opinion re the Nikon filter as I don’t have one to compare. I do however have Hoya filters on other lenses and I think this one is better
Thanks for the quick reply. Ok your view that the Viltrox is better than the Hoya could be important. The Nikon Arcrest is also better than the Hoya, but the Nikon is only for protection and not for UV. Your images with the lens are very good, we don't have that many flowers now in Sydney with the rain.

Excellent tip. I had gotten away from UV filters but recently I have started using them again for your reasons.

I have been putting a highly regarded German brand of UV filters on my lenses since my film days.

Thanks for watching. So much cheaper to replace a a UV filter than a lens. Cheers.

Yeah, I never thought about helping with resale, good point. Thanks for watching 📸🙏

Great tip mate, definitely a useful investment! Yoda agrees:)
Cheers Peter, have a great night mate 👍🙏
Great video, Adrian! I especially like that you pointed out a slight uptick in image quality with the filter.

I use always UV filters, but for Nikon Z 180-600mm I bought a Nikon Neutral Color filter
hey Adrian, what Bag do you have for all your lenses?

This vid reminded me I have to get a UV filter for my macro lens. Not this lens, but thx anyways.
Glad to help in someway. Thanks for watching.
Being a slim filter, are you able to attach the lens cap to it? Or does it need to be removed, when putting the lens cap back on?
Very good question and I should have mentioned that. Lens cap goes on no problems at all with filter on 👍
Thanks for the info! Got mine ordered. Now to sit and wait for the lens to come. 😩
I just got my 180-600. It's such a great lens. Really happy with it
Just picked up this lens today and only managed to take a few images of my dog with it. Super impressed so far.
That is a beautiful lens!
I love it!
