The 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Is The Ultimate The Driver's SUV

  • Every time we review a tech-heavy new vehicle the comment section explodes with "all I want is a fun to drive car" "I want buttons back" "LCD screens are getting out of control." Well if that's you, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the answer. It's quite simply the best luxury CUV when it comes to driving dynamics whether you get this very green Quadrifolio model or the base 280 HP RWD model.
Elephant in the room first: No, the Stelvio won't be winning any reliability awards, if you want that, get the Lexus. On the other hand Consumer Reports does rank it above the Land Rover and Jaguar options and even the Mercedes GLB. So take that for what its worth.
The Stelvio isn't about the latest tech (the infotainment system is small and the instrument cluster is mostly analogue). It's not about the latest driving assistant tech, it does have lane centering but you won't find a Lincoln-like self driving system. What it IS about is driving.
Quite simply the best in the segment when it comes to steering, handling, feel, feedback, etc. It's not going to the be the quietest or softest riding, but when it comes to the "shut up and drive" side of the equation, it's fantastic.
What do you think? While some folks buy a car for comfy seats, cargo room, big back seats, or that ever popular "reliability", the sales proposition for the Alfa is all about what happens behind the wheel. Is that enough?

I own a 2019 Stelvio 2L turbo and the car has been flawless. Maintenance costs have been on par with my old BMW. I have never had a problem with the car or my dealership.

Reliability for non-Quad models isn't much of an issue. What is a major issue is the dealer network. Good dealers are hard to come by, making service very tricky. You're good if you happen to be near a dealer with a competent and well-staffed service department. Otherwise, I'd look elsewhere. It's beyond frustrating not being able to have scheduled maintenance done at the dealer, with many non-dealer shops unwilling to touch an Alfa.

I'm not sure if its the shortage or associated dealer markups with other brands, but I took my 2017 Giulia in to my local dealer for an oil change and I was looking at the Stelvio as I'm probably going to get that next. The sales guy was telling me that the first four years they were open it was really hard to sell cars; they only had the Giulia and 4C and only gear-heads bought them. He said now the Stelvio is flying out of the store; it is the right size, great looks, fuel economy, and good enough performance for the "mass market". The purists still buy the Giulia but the Stelvio is an SUV so it is getting people who four years ago had never even heard of Alfa Romeo. It helps that no Alfa dealer in this country marks up-----they want to SELL! Market share is more important to a new brand.

But it really excels in curvy roads. Brakes on the 280 is very good. Since we have a lot of snow in Sweden I can confirm that it's a great wintercar. The perfectly balanced chassi makes it very steady on slippery surfaces. If infotament comes high on your list, go with a German car, but otherwise the Alfa has so much more personality.

What they don't realize is that the 280 hp Stelvio has the same 0-60 time as the 400 hp version of the Jaguar F-Pace and the Stelvio handles much better (and gets better mpg). Again, the unreliable Alfa line is old and outdated. Reliability has been good ever since the mid 2000s when production methods changed. And the newer still Stelvio's and Giulia's have been really good as they are totally new models built differently from the ground up.
I have had 3 Alfas now, 100k miles in one, 20k in a Giulia and now into Stelvio ownership and not a single issue on any of my cars. There will always be some exceptions and the odd car that has issues, but they are rated above most of the Germans now - level with BMWs and above Audi and Mercs. Although still behind the Japanese of course.
Seriously good cars that people just need to know that they are reliable and for people to actually do homework and not just repeat what they hear others say from out of date tag lines.

The Macan GTS is about $10-$20k more expensive depending on options. It's much more luxurious and premium in terms of goodies and design. It's just as fast and quick in a straight line but it's not quite as nimble and sporty in the handling compared to the Stelvio QV. So the Macan is slightly more design for luxury, tech, and comfort. Stelvio is a bit more on dynamics, handlng, and sport.
