Linux Terminal Commands: Pipes and Redirection

- You can use pipes and redirection from a Linux, Unix or macOS terminal to control where the output from a program goes. For pipes this means that the output becomes the input for another program. Whereas redirection allows you to send the output of a program to a file.

Clear explanation. Easy to understand
Good evening professor. Really love your Linux and Programming explanations, I hope you can do more.
Pipes make Linux infinitely more powerful than Windows. Thanks again Gary.
Ben Durance Absolutely! Pipes make terminal so powerful for logically sending things to new locations.
Actually, DOS added pipes at some point. Microsoft is great at copying success. If you use the powershell they even have the ls command. But why use an impersonation of a great operating system when you can use the original for free?
power shell terminal of windows is also very powerful... can do all the commands in it.
And it is not copying, the terminal commands have become a general trend in all bash
@@jagardina Well, you know... Because people want everything on a silver platter?

MUCH CLEARER THAN OTHERS
I wish you are my professor I learned a lot in 9 minutes than in my 3 hours lectures.
Why does youtube-dl 'somefburl' -g | vlc not work,
but manually taking the output of ytdl and pasting it as an arg to vlc works?
Thanks Gary, This video is very informative.
Neat, serendipitous even.. seeing this and a g/re/p with Kernighan on Computerphile on the same day in my sub box. :O) Best invention ever.. this command-chaining thing.. no idea how I'd do my job without it

When you realize that Gary has 24k subs and some kid reviewing toys has 14 millions..
Jakub Marincic Tell me about it!!! 😏
That’s because people don’t like to learn, most of us are all about entertainment... so if you know how to make people smile or create some emotions, then you are good to go.
Pretty surprised to see you have done this type of videos as well along with videos on new tech!!!!

Hi Gary, I like it when you make videos about linux since I'm a linux user myself, but can you at least make a bit more advanced video about it?
Indonesia I don't know what you mean by "at least" bit leaving that to one side, what type of topics would you consider to be advanced?
Seeing as this is not specifically a Linux power user channel, I think he is trying to appeal to more viewers. I think it is a fantastic video to display the power of terminal.
niceee
Gary! Can you suggest any books to learn about Linux 😀😀😀
What aspects are you interested in? System admin? Software development? Desktop & productivity?
Gary Explains Desktop and Productivity will be my first aim! Software development will take some time and practice in programming before I begin
How did you do the intro thing?
Excellent video Gary! Sounds like your mouth is getting better since last time. dentists, a necessary evil....
