  • CX500 Rescue PT2 - Carburetor Cleaning and Vacuum Sync! The CX500 is running much better after a carburetor cleaning and vacuum sync which I gave an intro to in the previous video. This shows a good A/B test on doing a bench sync vs a vacuum sync on your carburetors. A bench sync will get you pretty close but as you see its not perfect. Overall I was within a half turn of the adjustment to be truly equal.

For my ultrasonic cleaner I use a simple green pro HD currently. This was recommended by another shop owner who does a lot of aluminum parts. So far it seems to work well. amzn.to/3R0b5i3
    - 30l Ultrasonic cleaner
    - 5 gallons hot water
    - half gallon simple green
    - A few squirts of dawn dish soap
    - 35-60 degrees Celsius depending on what i'm doing. Hotter temps remove paint so use caution.

I have a 1980 CX500C (as well as a couple of GL500's, a '79 CX500, and an '83 GL650, all project bikes. In the next couple of weeks I'll be balancing the CX500C carbs, as it runs but not smoothly - all stock. If needs be, I will take the carbs out and strip down/clean etc.
Many thanks again for this!! (As well as your other video's!!), Cheers, Adrian 😀👋

I really appreciate you taking the time out to get back to me on my questions I had for you the other day. I am now on the hunt for that Honda Hawk. You had me at single rear swing are. I had forgotten being stuck in my builds being limited to the meat that will fit between the rear swing arm. Plus a single rear swing arm is just cool man. I think this channel is the Cats Pajama's. I love to see craftsman do incredible things not with a shop full of the newest and greatest but with brain power, blood sweat and tears. Just Subbed!

Very cool video on carb overhaul and in-general freshening of this bike! Sounds like it runs well to me!
Tuning CV carbs with individual air cleaners can be a PITA, but, if the carb is understood, it's not that bad. I did it with my CBX a long time ago and picked up a ton of power. Trick is to get the vacuum slides to open smoother but not necessarily quicker. I did that with a spare set of slide springs, kept tying up a coil until I got them right, and opened up the vacuum bleed in the spare set of slides I had to make that work even better. Lot of work, keep a standard airbox if possible!
    Thanks man!

    Hi BJ
I just wanted to thank you for all your UA-cam content in general and this one in particular. I always watch the full content of your videos as often the nuggets of advice reveal themselves. In this video the explanation of cheap pod filters helped me resolve a massive problem I was having with my 1977 CB 550F2 super sport. I wrongly assumed that I was having a lean out around 4000rpm and a rough idle that I couldn't sort in spite of rejetting. After watching your video I realised that the cheap pod filters were totally blocking the air jet passages and causing a rich situation. I swopped them for 4 foam filters and the transformation is unreal. Cheers fella keep em coming!

I am not knocking your work in any way but I must say painting carbs is nothing that I have ever considered. Nice job on the intricacies of those carbs. My 1980 CB650C had the anti pop valves and all my experts said "don't touch them" as they were unobtanium at the time. Those were regular slides. CVs can be very tricky. Sounds great. I have used Cerakote, done at home (bought a cheap oven to go in the garage). Not used it on any carb parts. But like it for brake calipers, fairing brackets, clip on bars, etc where the thin finish and the resistance to brake fluid, etc, is useful. Takes time though and easier to mess up that paint (too thick a coating will blister when baked).
Doubt you would manage a good match to the rest of the paint using Cerakote though.
100% agree that fun is the important bit. I have bikes from a YSR50 gag bike up to a tuned 1200 Bandit (mostly have 125 2 strokes though), and fun is the important bit.

I don't know if you did them in the first build but in all the older bikes I worked on I always split the carbs and replaced the o-rings on the fuel and accelerator tubes between them. Nothing more frustrating rebuilding carbs and they seep out those joints when you put gas through them. I always bench tested the carbs also just to see if they have a leak before putting the effort to mount them on the bike.
