    This track has been haunting me for a while now so I decided to see if I could reverse engineer a few of the sounds on my system. initially I only wanted to do the bassline but I got a bit carried away and ended up doing the entire thing. It might not be an exact clone but I definitely learned a lot in the process of trying to recreate those sounds.

    • @xydamage9754
      @xydamage9754 5 років тому +12

      I'm replying one year late, but if it can be of any help, he makes a lot of his bass lines on a Korg ms 20. The Morgasmatron filter by Intellijel is supposedly a good imitation of the filter from that synth.
      Then as an oscillator I think you could use any module that makes saw and square waves.
      For all the glitchy percussions I'd say the fastest route is to have some sort of sampler, because you would otherwise need a huge system to emulate all those different textures at the same time. There are also some really interesting digital percussion modules out there, like the WMD fracture, chimera and crucible. For the kick and sub bass something like a basimilus iteratas alter might work, though it might not be very accurate (it has a huge range though, and it sounds really nice in any case). You obviously need an EQ and a compressor for drums to fine tune them and get a polished sound, or you could have external hardware or software for that.
      You also need some nice long reverbs and granular delays, to make those super lush atmospheres Jon has in most of his tracks. Something like the mutable instruments clouds.
      He uses a lot of field recordings, vocals, piano, strings, etc that he uses to make his atmospheres. For that the only way is sampling and reverb.
      Throw a distortion module of some kind in there and some digital mangling effects like a bit crusher, a delay module too, a bunch of utility modules, sequencers, LFOs and envelopes and you could make something that maybe has a similar aesthetic. But honestly, his music is heavily reliant on resampling and using a ton of digital effects, without a massive system you couldn't do it. I would personally just try to recreate the stuff he does with analog synths, like the bass lines or the pluck sounds and maybe the kick and do everything else digitally.
      TL;DR: you can make the bass with any oscillator and a Morgasmatron, for everything else you're better off with software
