ONE THING I NEED
Luke 10:38-42
Introduction: We all have got work to do. We work from Monday to Friday, then we come
home and do household chores. Some of us work for the Lord and most of you are voluntarily
serving the Lord. Now, what is your attitude towards your work? Do you consider it as your duty
because of the salary or do you consider it as your loving service to the Lord?
Luke 10:38-42 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman
named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet
listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She
came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell
her to help me!” 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,
42 but few things are needed-or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken
away from her.”
Misplaced priority of service - Focus on work
1. Our service becomes greater than the savior.
When our service of the Lord becomes so important, we often times miss the reason for which
we are serving.
2. Our service is offered with ever diminishing joy.
My service, this is my offering to you.
Luke 10:40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.
Now my offering has no joy because my joy is lost in the process of the labour involved in it.
3. Our time begins to reflect on the misplaced priorities.
4. Our irritability with others increases while the simplicity in our service decreases.
We start to get frustrated with people. Because service is my focus, I get frustrated with people
around me. They are not keen in service, they are not serving with dedication. They got to
protect the work.
5. Our satisfaction comes from our service rather than our savior.
6. Our criticism of others’ lack of service rises alongside our rising pity for ourselves.
They are not on time. I am doing all the hard work, all are enjoying at work. They do not come
for the preparatory prayer, I am the best musician. We criticize others and our pity for ourselves
increases. No body serves like I do. I have served so long in this MNC or the place of ministry.
Nobody has served this long as I have. Nobody has served in the same level of enthusiasm as I
do. People have lost their desire for service which I have. Self-pity rises for self and so does
criticism rises for others.
A true believer hears the Word of God and obey it.
