The 280zx distributor is probably the best if you want to stay electronic ignition. I reverted my 240 to points ignition and it has ran like a champ. Just make sure your dwell is set and bring an extra set for your road-trip just in case.
I ran a 280zx "matchbox" distributor in a turbocharged /nitrous Datsun back in the early 2000's . The bushing was replaced, the advance weights altered and the timing was controlled by an MSD Boost Timing Master . The motor reliably made over 500 rwh and spun past 7k.

Off that NB, you can use either the block or the head (or both ofc). Block is functionally the same, but the head is a nice upgrade (assuming it's a 1.8). The NB 1.8 heads are the BP4W, and is basically the best head there is for a Miata. The VVT head can make more power, but you need VVT control. Without it, it doesn't flow as well.
Thanks for the info! My red Miata has a 1.8 out of a 97 and the nb is a 99. Hopefully I won’t need to use the nb engine 🤞🏼

rx7 is the winner for me even if its a carby bridge port. for gains n/a id personally go ITB's but thats just my preference cant wait for the challenges between the 3 cars, i predict bad things to happen to all 3 cars but i can be proven wrong for sure

I had pertronix on my luv and it was breaking up at high rpm to, the unit was bad. Put in a new one and it fixed it
