Lee Trevino, what a legend. A hero to all Texans and all Mexican-Americans!
Mr Trevino - you are my all time favorite ! No one before or since has brought what you brought to the game. Thank you for you lifes work and the inspiration it brings. Hope you are doing great wherever you may be
Brian C one of the few people that could beat jack down the stretch in a major
On Saturday's third round in 1971, Trevino was playing with amateur, Jim Simon who shot the best round of the tournament that day with a 65 to grab the third round lead. Trevino saved Simon a two shot penalty as he told him to re tee his ball at #7 as he Simon was ahead of the tee box. Lee was pure class in doing that.
James, you know coaching from another player during a game is absolutely illegal? Always has been - and yes, that includes your example.
Tom Watson, ironic to your example, gave Trevino a tip on his stance when he was playing badly in the 1980 Tournament of Champions, a 2 stroke penalty for Watson, and luckily Watson was informed of the 2 strokes just before he signed his card, or he would have been DQ'd for wrong score (he won it).
@@markmark5269 It is a fine line on the meaning of advice in golf. In Watson's case a golf tip or advice on mechanics, grip, stance, take away etc. are prohibited by example in the Rules of Golf, expanded edition. That was an infraction of advice. As for Trevino's advice that Simon had teed up outside the tee ground, that would be considered public knowledge, others could clearly see the incorrect placement of the ball. If other people can see it, it is considered public knowledge. Declaring or imparting public knowledge is not considered advice under the rules of golf. One must read the complete rules, a full sized book about 2 1/2 inches thick. Mine cost me $37.50 about 25 years ago. In a survey in 1974 or 5 the PGA asked touring pros if they had a copy of the expanded Rule Book. Only five said yes, among the 5 were Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino. I once played a lot of amateur tournaments, I was playing out of town and lost my yardage book somewhere on 17. On the 18th tee I asked my opponent how far a bunker was off the tee. He called a rules official and told him I was asking for advice, the official said it was public knowledge and not advice, then told me it was 238 to the backside of the bunker. ya gotta know the rules.
One of a kind! He did it his way and it was so fun to watch. He added a lot of life to the game.
I could listen to Lee Trevinos stories all day everyday
Yea Lee Trevino was awsome. What a shotmaker only on the tour 12 years 6 majors you do the math !!
Maths.
agree with erock. Would love to spend a day with trevino.
Mr Lee you are and always be my favorite player ..... greatest ball striker of all time...... pierod
USA Ryder Cup guys need to spend some time with Trevino. He had more guts out there on the course than any player since Hogan. Talent goes a long way but guts are what makes you a legend. Way to go Mex..
Jack Nicklaus sportsmanship is unmatched. Win or lose... this is the Great man of the last century across all sport... and how I have lived my life... win or lose...
no sour grapes from Nicklaus at the end-jack was the greatest winner and the greatest loser
What an amazing human being. The fact that he’s such an incredible golfer is an added bonus, for everyone. The fact that he grew up dirt poor, literally, and learned a swing that works so well on his own is a miracle. And by human being, I mean all things that make us human, good and sometimes not so good. Respect where it’s due.
Had that amazing string of victories in 1971 where over a 3 week span won the U.S. Open, the Canadian Open and the British Open.
Styles makes fights...well said mr Trevino!
Lee Trevino. A great player and a gentleman.
Best shotmaker I ever saw
Nicklaus, had always said the only two players, he ever feared going up against were Trevino, and Watson
I suppose it would be nice to see Trevino in a more gracious light, but his underdog personality ran pretty deep. As Nicklaus once said, Trevino's problems existed between his ears. They sure didn't exist in his golf game.
I remember this like it was 48 years ago.
"he might be chokin worse than i am!" hahahahaha. thats awesome.
gotta love trevino. always has a good story. would listen to him all day long.
how bout jack leavin it in the bunker twice? best golfer of that generation, leavin it in the bunker twice?? wow.. thats crazy.
It was crazy because of the situation, I think it was a mental lapse on Nicklaus part, which was extremely rare. Usually in the open the first priority is to get out even if long. If the situation allows, try to get it close, but get out, Don't turn a bogie into a double. Even Nicklaus admitted the weakest part of his game was the wedges, that weakness showed up at the worst possible time. As an aside, that particular day Nicklaus spent over half of his warm up hitting wedge shots. Review the entire playoff, Nicklaus hit at least two short wedge shots fat, didn't even hit the green from 40 yards, a lot of chip shots not within 20 feet. Such is life.
CHILLS!
My dad found two flagsticks from that tournament in the woods. I sold them for 4k
a few weeks before the 13 us open.
The band aid on Lee's right arm hid the tatoo of the name of his former girl friend.
Lee has the most wins against Jack in majors than any other player in history.
You not only arrived you came home.
The first few holes cost Jack , when he left those shots in the bunker early in the round
Always wonderful to listen to, but his story about the wet greens enabling him to win in 1971 is bunkum - he was so brilliant he could win anywhere in any conditions.
Trevino is a "money" player!
"Naw, that ain't pressure man, pressure is when you're playin for 20 bucks with 5 bucks in your wallet on the wrong side of town." Lee Trevino
The greatest golfer in history is Jack Nicklaus. The greatest persona and ball striker is Lee Trevino. Both are true champions.
I saw Trevino play, he didn't hit that far, and he complained about the masters because he had an open stance and always hit a fade, something that wuld not fair well at Augusta
240 avg. Trevino
280 avg. Nicklaus
He gave up 4 clubs into almost every green!
Often overlooked fact👍
"Anyone can win one Open but it takes a hellova player to win two"
Ye right, and Grizzly Adams had a beard.
nicklaus won ELEVEN more majors than hogan.a QUANTAM LEAP IN FRONT.
