THE OC818 is made by Austrian Audio. Going after an absolute juggernaut in the audio world. Not an easy task. But this mic allows you to manipulate the relationship between capsules on a whole different level. AKG C414 is a legend of a mic... but it can't do this.

The OC818 is a modern classic, much like the Soyuz 017 Tube. But the flexibility to change the polar pattern after a recording is just incredible, I wish more companies would utilize this technology and make it industry standard. For example, being able to take a R88 mic and make it cardioid instead of figure 8 would be so helpful.

I know there are a handful of cardioid ribbon mics (e.g. M160), but something like that isn't really doable with the usual ribbon designs. All multi pattern LDCs already have dual capsules.

I've had my OC818 for a few years now (2? I can't remember exactly) and I adore it. One of the really cool things about these mics are that the capsule build tolerances are so tight that they guarantee that you can just buy another OC818, or an OC18 (!) off the shelf and they will be a matched pair for stereo.

As a voice over artist and musician from Vienna, this mic is my daily driver and I can only say that I absolutely adore it. So far it just worked great with everything I recorded with it. (you can even see it in my picture, lol). All the insane extras are wonderful too, but foremost to me the sound was just wonderfully balanced.
Also, it's kinda nice to know that my mic was built not too far from me.
Thank you so much for all the great and inspirational content.

If you ever come to Vienna I'm sure they'd happily have you!
I also love the whole story behind the company!
Austrian Audio is basically the old AKG guys thatwere let go when they moved production (to China I think?). So they bought the old AKG factory and started Astrian Audio there. It's basically the OG AKG crew in the OG AKG factory.
That was off the top of my head, I hope I got that at least roughly right.

Man this is a fantastic seeming mic. Really considering it. As a side note, I have those drums and they are SICK! Good stuff here man. And what a fantastic song and performance! Good work all around.

Austrian Audio has been KILLING it since they started. Their technology is insane, yet it all sounds so classic. I can see Austrian being a studio staple in a few more years.

Vincent is incredible!!! So is this mic! If I had $1250 to spend, this mic could easily be a major work horse in the studio.
Hard to tell how good it sounded on the distorted bass. But I liked everything else I heard it do. Also not sure it could replace my go to for electric guitars which is dynamic plus ribbon, capsules aligned. But on drums both as a trash can and kick out it was very nice. It was as good as anything I've ever heard on acoustic and on vocal seemed incredibly detailed and soft...you would be hard pressed to get a more intimate sound from a modern u87.
Very nice mic indeed. I haven't tried the tracks and the plugin. But the extra functionality would seem to cement this as one of the most useful mics of all time!
Now who wants to sponsor me on one of these!? Hello? 😢

    Great review and nice song!
Is it the best vocal mic ever made? No. Is it the best electric guitar mic? No... It's extremely versatile, that's what it is. And therefore every studio should have a couple of those and every hobbyist who can afford to have one expensive microphone that sounds great on almost everything can't go wrong with this one.
Initially, I wasn't sure whether it was such a smart move to spend this much money on a microphone as a student, but there have been zero regrets so far. Also, thanks for the tip of staying away from budget gear. Knowing that I could easily sell this mic without losing much money, if I ever had to made the decision much easier.

I've been using a pair of these for my drum overheads for about a year now & can't see any reason to use anything else. I got just the right blend of capsules for my room and get excellent space and detail in my tracks. These mics are worth every penny.

I never gave any credibility to after the fact polar pattern tweaking. Then I got my hands on a UAD sphere LX. I was blown away by how useful it is to select various polar patterns from the control room while the mic is recording. It's a really fantastic modern feature that shouldn't be seen as a mere gadget,

Great video. I am currently looking to buy a condenser mic, how would you compare this to the Mojave 300? I would only be recording vocals and electric/ acoustic guitar with it. And I probably can only afford one of them.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  4 місяці тому

Very different. The 300 has more mojo and color. Rounded bottom. If you want more of a workhorse the oc may be the way to go.
But honestly this may come down to a taste thing. The 300 is such a good mic.

Can you still choose pickup patterns even if you don't use the dual outputs? ie. Can I set it to hypercardioid on the mic and just use one XLR?
