I used this video to make my own ball mold in machining class not long after you first posted it, came out really well. Made the cannon to go with it too. :)
Can't believe the BS about lead. I was a printer casting lead 10 hours a day for 15 years and in all my time I never saw anybody in the trade get lead poisoning. BTW I'm now 66 years old with no health issues at all, plus all my children are normal too. Lead only turns to gas at much higher temps than what is generally used when casting. Very nice self made mold guys! I'm a keen Muzzle loader and cannoneer too.
That's one nice mold! For people that do not have a lathe, you can buy commercial "cannonball" fishing molds. Then polish off the weight markings in the mold and polish interior if you like shiney. Drop out brand graphite spray helps to cut molding time. Also can grind an edge on a washer and weld a rod on the side. Drill 1/2 way into graphite and attatch two graphite cups for the mold. Drill down the seam for a pour channel....
A sand or wax core is used inside the mould.. Think smaller ball inside a big ball.. When its cast and cooled the core if sand is broken up through vibration so that it pours out the casting. If wax was used then it would burn away in the casting process... For your purposes it might be easier to use concrete instead of casting metal
Did the finished balls get mic'd parallel and perpendicular to the mold halves? Only asking because they appear very out of round as if the cavities were not cut deep enough. It may be possible to re-mill the mold a little deeper.
That takes me back... 1lb lead ballls made up, nice. I made 405 grain 45 70 bullets by the hundreds. Do one complete pour and heat the mold first or they wrinkle. LOL
You know if you put those cannonballs in a bucket of water the Rockwell hardness is harder than if it just air cools I don't know the science behind it but it works
Dead soft lead is generally preferable for projectiles fired at black powder velocities. Also, melted or fresh hot lead contacting water can cause explosions of steam and/or boiling water that can cause life-altering and/or lethal burns. Wise casters won't allow any liquids remotely in the vicinity of where they're casting.
@@grantgarrod2232 BS. I drop my lead balls in water all the time. It will not explode. The lead is cooled to the point that water cannot enter into the molten center, if it's even molten then. Your just a big talker that don't understand anything. Lethal burns , Yea right !!!!!!!
Just an suggestion.. You should tap on it lightly when you pour it.. Helps get air out .. And keep pouring when there's a hole that forms.. I pour 50+ pounds leds all the time
I made a mold based on that design, finally tried it tonight and my funnel was too short, it cooled too fast and plugged the hole, also less then ideal heating, small wood fire and squatting on the west ground, in the dark, flashlight in my teeth. Fack. :) Worked with some candle wax though so I know it works.
Disposable (dirt/clay/sand) molds. You make a template, and then press clay molds on to it, to make your casting mold. Once you casted your item you break the now dry mold, and recover the casted item. The beauty of the whole thing is that you just crush the mold, add water, and re-use it. It's done the same way still, but nowdays you use sand and resins, and cast your engine block, or what ever.... And the mold leftovers are still reusable.
Put a highly visible red, green, bright blue sign where the round part of the mold ends and pour only till there.Or better, the part you pour through make it funnel with the interior end 1/3,1/4 of the exterior end,as in diameter, and when you see it comming out to that stop pouring. It saves of some useless work.
motanelustelistu you actually want to over fill when casting. The metal shrinks as it cools. If you only fill to level it will have a simple when it cools
Is there any chance to see you fire some of these beauties? If you watch my cannon vid there is a shot of one about that size through the head of a target......we fired it at a local range kaaaBOOm.
I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.
@rgmcall the caption says 1000 grain lead balls but I heard a guy say 7000 grains. 7000 is 1 lb. I cast some .451 and .490 balls routinely and they run between 138 and 175 grains. a 16 oz. slug oughta make a politician scamper.....ROFL!!!
Funny how melted lead looks almost exactly like mercury - even odder that the solid lead floats in mercury. Anybody tried stuffing mercury into a lead ball and seeing what that would do to a target?
@xxABIGBOYxx If you could ever make it, you should just be able to make one from looking at that one like I did, otherwise you can buy them online, search for lead ball mold. (or show this video to a machinist)
Me like this video, but it is very harmfull to breathe near molten lead, there must have been a vent or something. Lead builds up in the bones over time and eventually kills.
Yeah, you'll have to make a sand, firebrick or clay mold near a clay furnace and smash the bottom of that furnace near that mold when the iron's smelted. That's too much work for iron, though.
Leave the danger blah blah stuff to OSHA, because the end game is using these castings to pressurize and heat a steel tube to an unreasonable level. For what end? Cannons are hard to feed like that.
Wow, this is definitely not safe. Lead is most dangerous because of the fumes released by the metal when liquidized. Respirators are a must when working with lead!
I used this video to make my own ball mold in machining class not long after you first posted it, came out really well. Made the cannon to go with it too. :)
I lop off the sprue with bolt cutters right a way just to remelt for more rds & clean up the projos later, all of mine are conicals😊
Just what I need for my 1 inch bore blunderbuss .

100% I Couldn't agree more!!!
May I just say that he is a better metal worker than a camera operator.

They look like grenades when they come out of the mold! Nice vid.
I was gonna say that but you already said it :3
Question about cannon balls, especially ones with a charge in them. How does one make a round canonball but it's hollow inside?
A sand or wax core is used inside the mould.. Think smaller ball inside a big ball.. When its cast and cooled the core if sand is broken up through vibration so that it pours out the casting. If wax was used then it would burn away in the casting process... For your purposes it might be easier to use concrete instead of casting metal
Never tried this but you could theoretically use a wax mold and put a thin concrete layer across, then paint lead black?
weird seeing you here o.o
Great video! Just makes you think to 'back in the days' where they needed 1000's of lead bullets done, ASAP.
Back in my days, I casted tin figures in plaster molds.
Did the finished balls get mic'd parallel and perpendicular to the mold halves? Only asking because they appear very out of round as if the cavities were not cut deep enough. It may be possible to re-mill the mold a little deeper.
That is a neat process and interesting to watch :)
that looks really fun
Ka-BOOOOOOMM... I love it!
They looked like grenades when they first came out

*licks cannon ball*
Looks like I’m dead
what beanssissy is referring to is called a sprue cutter. it cuts off excess lead (sprue) flush with bullet for easier and faster casting
you guys do im impressed
just like the kid said at 3:45 'That's cool... that's cool!' hahah
you'll be well armed when pirates come!
Moulds can be purchased that size too. Mine are much smaller. Lead, it's what fetches dinner.
THAT IS AWESOME!!!
Great Video !
Reminds me of Terminator 2 for some reason.....
Want one that will make cannon sized rifled slugs.
great. Now i finally have something to fire at the French Cavalry
So badass
...you've got a lot of balls :P
AWSOME!
what a sweet little cannon balls. I would love wasting some with homelass cats and dogs
Hope somebody mistakes you for a homeless guy and wastes you
how did they make them in the 1700's? the same with, with an iron ball cast?
how would i make a lead mold for pellets about the size of pellets for a pellet gun?if you could, can you make a video i would greatly appreciate it
man i wish i can do that

Hello HollowForm223
where did you get a cannon ball mould from?
Im watching this so i can exercise my second ammendment right the way the founding fathers intended
byden says there's always been restrictions on cannon
@HollowForm222 how much did it cost to have made? have u considered making it out of alum?
great job, really looks good, the balls look great also.
How many 1 3/4' lead cannon balls can be made from three bars of lead?
Back then bullet making is way easier!
Rough mold, yikes. LOTS of sanding to clean that up. We use foundry zinc. Much safer than lead, doesn't deform and very clean.
Just an suggestion.. You should tap on it lightly when you pour it.. Helps get air out .. And keep pouring when there's a hole that forms.. I pour 50+ pounds leds all the time
@HollowForm222 would it be easier to break one lead ingot to start melting it then add the whole ones later
Very nice work you could probably use the balls for a large ball mill Btw where did you get the Lead from was it expensive?
cover the pot and add shavings, it will melt much faster.
Did he make the mold with piston heads?
Do you sell the Cannonball molds? 70mm diameter?
i need a mold for a 2 1/2 " round ball. Any ideas?
been a long time since I did that. You going to have more on the cleanup and usage?
Do you file down the shot to smooth up the crease from casting?
I made a mold based on that design, finally tried it tonight and my funnel was too short, it cooled too fast and plugged the hole, also less then ideal heating, small wood fire and squatting on the west ground, in the dark, flashlight in my teeth.
Fack. :)
Worked with some candle wax though so I know it works.
are those exactly 1 pound balls?? cause if so i want a mold and would pay 100 dollars for 1 if you sell them
@HollowForm222 :0 that is sweet
now u got balls :)

nice, where did you get the cannon. sorry for all the questions, just wondering
Is there any chance to see you fire some of these beauties? If you watch my cannon vid there is a shot of one about that size through the head of a target......we fired it at a local range kaaaBOOm.
were did you get the mold
Where could I get a mild like that in Canada?
Amazon?
It was custom made for that cannon by him.
You could make grape shot?
where's the cannon?
4:00 how to make dummy grenades at home

i made a one inch but damn

@uncool sticcboi oh no not the environment!!! 😆🤣😆😅😂🖕
3:55 looks like a hand gernade
start with lead chips..it will melt 10 minutes faster
@HollowForm222
I had it pretty hot, but maybe not hot enough, I drilled out the funnel today so we'll see.
lol...."don't be ignorant we're on film"...bahahaha!
what do je do with the lead balls?
Eat them. They are very good for you. Helps you grow up big, strong, and smart.
@@alexbarry689 8 years ago I sent that message you must have been still in school
They take a while before the center is solid. Your lead is too hot and so is the mold.
I would try this.
But with molten iron or molten aluminum.
Good luck kiddo
Chuck Norris lunch stew.
You should probably pour the metal faster. I know with sand casting at least you want to form a choke in the sprue.
Hey who can pass up a unique ball mold?
They look like grenades ...
i no what are they a pound a piece :)
عالی
@xxABIGBOYxx

well its for a shotgun homemade lead shotgun pellets
I would not cast with lead, id rather use zinc. Molten lead release a dangerous gas.
zinc is really bad too XD
tin is good
aluminum is good too
***** it is definitely better than lead though.
still would use a respirator for both XD
***** yep.
If you use flux its not an issue.
Description is so nonchalant.
"A friend and I are making cannon balls for his cannon."
a day in the normal life of a man.
lol well i was being honest. we were making balls lol
yeah...
Can you recover them after they are fired?
I have seen them recovered.
I want to strangle whoever told you there is no stupid questions.
I though lead balls were only made for rifle & muskets since the immense pressure of gunpower in a cannon would totally deform it for a long pot shot.
Me like this video, but it is very harmfull to breathe near molten lead, there must have been a vent or something. Lead builds up in the bones over time and eventually kills.
Hey jackass the vent is called the great outdoors
how much they weight????
bout a pound each
The video started out saying it's a 7000 grain ball. "Don't act ignorant we're on film."
Who uses a Canon these days?!
Mostly professional photographers.
I am afraid, making Iron Cannonballs isn't that easy :(
Yeah, you'll have to make a sand, firebrick or clay mold near a clay furnace and smash the bottom of that furnace near that mold when the iron's smelted. That's too much work for iron, though.
aren't they called ing-ot not in-got?
Ingot. You are welcome sir 😉
isnt the lead a lil toxic ?
Nope. Who told you that? It's in your water how bad could it be for you? 🤤
Leave the danger blah blah stuff to OSHA, because the end game is using these castings to pressurize and heat a steel tube to an unreasonable level. For what end? Cannons are hard to feed like that.
gentelmen... its a ball
Why do you need cannon balls?
Mind your own business he said lol
That Sir is one stupid fucking question.
*mold
You can buy 1lb round sinker molds for less than 40 bucks.
Sounds a bit too Obvious!!
Wow, this is definitely not safe. Lead is most dangerous because of the fumes released by the metal when liquidized. Respirators are a must when working with lead!
oh shut up.
you only need them if you are in a place that's not well ventilated.
so is crossing the road. so lets all wrap up in bubble wrap but that might not be safe as well, DAM lets not do anything that way we will all be safe
Okay safety jeff
