It will stand the test of time, if the human race is still here 100 years from now people will still be listening to and appreciating this. Thank you for posting this. I think it’s worth mentioning that in I Want You the instrumental interlude has a beautiful interplay between Paul’s bass and George’s lead guitar. Also, I Want You ends Side 1 on a chord that directly leads into the first chord of Side 2’s first track Here Comes The Sun, whereas the last chord of Her Majesty that ends Side 2 directly leads into the first chord of Side 1’s first track, Come Together. This creates a perfect circular effect. Even though I doubt very much that the Beatles intended this it does seem to me that with it the gods of Music were bestowing their blessing on the whole album. Thanks again.

Pretty good review, until you got to the end where you call the Beatles “prog”. Why does every clueless millennial and gen z think everything that isn’t metal is prog? The most overused term in music. The album has elements of hard rock, rock and roll, heavy rock, blues rock, and folk rock. Prog is a lazy term these days, and used to back date groups into a more narrow genre that did not exist earlier, and had and have descriptive genres that accurately capture their art.
If I understood him right, he wasn't saying "the Beatles are prog" but rather that their music had elements that can be seen as foreshadowing prog. Specifically, You Never Give Me Your Money had "a structure that people have looked at as a precursor to progressive rock tracks" he says. I think that's true, it has. The very same has certainly been said of many other musical ideas in the Beatles canon, by such prog royalty as e.g. Jon Anderson. It isn't a crazy thought.

RAM by McCartney was probably the first prog album. Released May 1971. McCartney did a lot of stuff that had major influence outside of his regular hit songs in the early 70's. If you listen to RAM, also listen to the bonus track Oh Woman, Oh why. It's a sound you would later in the 70's from others.
I actually agree with calling the Beatles prog. I think the whole prog ‘genre’ is a contradiction in terms anyway. How can you be truly progressive if you’re bound to constraints of what the so called genre is meant to be? To the extent they innovated and weren’t afraid to experiment I’d argue the Beatles were more truly progressive than many of the bands people would think of as typical prog. Not sure why you seem to be so hung up on genres and labels tbh. Good music is good music.
@ For those of us that have followed, closely, and enjoyed the evolution (not progression) of blues to r&b to rock and roll from the 50’s on, having lived through it all; then from r&r to all the sub-genres of rock through the decades - these sub genres all have meaning. Prog has its own niche and a distinctive sound, and well includes such greats as Yes, Genesis, and Rush. While the Beatles unquestionably innovated and evolved rock in different directions, it is a mistake to call every turn in the road “prog”, which is a lazy way of characterizing sub-genres that have already established more descriptive and accurate classifications that were and are readily understood. That’s why they cane into being. “Prog” has become a meaningless basket that has in the last 10-15 years been misused to allocate most everything in the Rock world that is not Metal, which has its own half dozen sub-genres (slash, death, sludge, industrial, death, speed).
@ What gives all of those sub genres beyond mere categorisation? Prog being short for progressive, I don’t see what is progressive about boxing yourself into a certain genre. It’s why I don’t like that prog label, because it’s contradictory in and of itself. At least with a term like pop, you can align it closely with music that’s generally popular. Once you start all of these sub genres you mentioned at the end it gets a bit ridiculous. The average person would have no clue what to make of those terms as a way of distinguishing differently types of music from each other, so really what use are they?
@@jonathanmarkham1998 They are of interest to people who care about that music, and consequently find it useful, and part of the hobby.
