Upon getting my 1st real job, during grade 10, '70's high school, I purchased a stereo...a cheap receiver, with AM/FM, a turntable, 8 track & quad sound. By the next grade, I graduated to a power amp, turntable, cassette player and my Bose 501's, (that I still own). Still reelin' in my ears...
Wow, that skeevy Daniel video was a good find. I’ve never heard that part so clear before. It’s very interesting to hear the quieter supporting pieces that hold songs together. I’m looking forward to learning this!
Whoa.... Loving the rhythm lesson for this! You don't see a rundown of that section too often! THANK YOU! Oh by the way, I want that $&*#^*@ shirt! I read that book all the damn time as a kid!! LOL!
Studio musician Elliot Randall played the awesome lead on Reelin’… Afew youtube interviews about it. The 2nd take was used because the engineer didn’t push Record for the first take.
James James this lead is so well known even by non guitar players that you "must" play it note for note. Glad there was no improvisement live when you witnessed hearing it. Wish I was there with you.
The solo first time through on the original recording session Elliott Randel said was better but the recording engineer didn't record it. Can you imagine! They used the second and only other take. Reminds me of the iconic Marimba solo on "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck. Got it perfect first time through and didn't realize they were recording. Bowe after first time run through said ok I'm ready and they told him they recorded the practice run and would use it. 🙂
Once again I bow to the guitar god in you! That first run up the neck piece is so close (if not exact) to the opening riff of Any Major Dude. I never would have put that together. This is why we need the James James channel.
Still have one vinyl Quad LP from the early ‘70s. Had a friend who had a Quad audio system. Listened to test recordings on it, like race cars circling Indy.
Everyone always focuses on the solo for that song - with good reason - it's one of the greatest solos in recorded history- in my opinion anyway. However, that rhythm part is so cool! Thanks for sharing that!
Thanks so much, I'm really glad to see you cover this song. I always thought this song *sounded* really hard. Rhythm is one of my favorite things in songs like this.
Very cool! That's one of my all time favorite songs by any band going all the way back to when it originally came out. I had no idea that part was in there. I had a friend in the 70s who had a quad stereo. He had a quad copy of Abraxas which we had a never ending debate over. I maintained that it was not the same performance of the songs on the stereo version for at least some of the songs because of subtle differences particularly in Carlos' solos. Never resolved that debate. It sounded killer though on a four-speaker system.
I bought a kitana air amplifier but I just don’t like it. I really want a good practice amp with an effect loop so I can maybe add some pedals later. It doesn’t have to be super cheap but not really over $1000.00 if I can get away with it and still get a decent sound. I like to play 70s era classic rock. Any suggestions? I really love your stuff on UA-cam! Just watching you play I have learned so much!
@biosciencetech You bought the Katana Air, but I hear a lot of good things about the Boss Katana line? Maybe go to your local store and try the Boss Katana Artist MkII 1x12" 100-watt Combo Amp? It's a little beefier and more tones, and it takes pedals well [effects loop]. It's $600 on Sweetwater. I just went to a local bar and watched a band play, and the guitar player had one and the tones coming out were fantastic! My two cents, for what it's worth. Rock on!
So, I pulled my copy of Best of Steely Dan guitar transcription book off the shelf and it turns out that it actually includes a transcription for the rhythm part written as three "rhythm figures". The book doesn't say, but maybe the author had access to individual tracks to be able to hear the rhythm part.
how do you not see the dragon? did you play that Tele because Reelin in the Years is Page's favourite solo? great lesson, way outclassed me but watched you play it to see if I could pick up little things. Going to the channel 4 video was worth it just for the thumbnail! thanks JJ Kale. BTW, check out channel 1
James: "There is no part, so I made up my own." Love it. Great vid.
the iconic solo was recorded through a old ampeg bass amp, using a early 60`s strat and that`s about it.
Awesome
So cool. The tune has 3 iconic solos!
The strat with a PAF humbucker in the neck position!
@Micaela Tomtlund what's better, a bridge humbucker for a strat or a neck one?
Yes - by Elliot Randall , who just more or less improvised it. Genius.
I remember QUAD! But i was in my late teens in the early 70"s. I am impressed that YOU remember Quad!
I still have an 8 track player with this album!

I think you did an awesome job on this. Man , too cool James. Thanks Brother
Great job with this difficult tune. Love your Teley
Awesome breakdown.
Most people including me would miss this rhythm part.
But it holds it together like glue.
Very good stuff.👍
🎸🥃
That rhythm reminds me a lot of the Yes song, "I've Seen All Good People" when it breaks out into a groove halfway through.
Good call
You wouldn't know a diamond if you held it in your hand / The things you think are precious I can't understand
great t shirt, i used to read that story to my children when they were young. another great video thanks
I used to play this in a band & never realised how it was played properly - until now! :)
A lesson for a guitar part that can only be heard in the quadrophonic version of the song - now that's some serious dedication to the cause!
Whoa.... Loving the rhythm lesson for this! You don't see a rundown of that section too often! THANK YOU! Oh by the way, I want that $&*#^*@ shirt! I read that book all the damn time as a kid!! LOL!
Awesome groove James James. You never disappoint. I've got to master this one. Two thumbs up. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks James! ...always dug this song. Remember being a wee lad and listening in awe.
Studio musician Elliot Randall played the awesome lead on Reelin’… Afew youtube interviews about it. The 2nd take was used because the engineer didn’t push Record for the first take.
I’ve seen him play it live - he does the solo note-for-note.
Love those history "bet you didn't know" info bits.

Another awesome t-shirt! That was one of my kids’ favorite books. Great playing as always.

I've got tommy in quad on cd
i have a machine head quad album
just what I needed !! Thanks

It is Jimmy Page’s favourite guitar solo. Played by Elliot Randall -not even a member of Steely Dan, just a buddy of theirs.
Never realized the intricacies of song until now and the part you “made up” is great. Thx for sharing
as soon as I saw this I got happy. cant wait to learn it!
Thanks JJ...Jimmy Page's favorite guitar solo...one of mine also. Glad you gave us this lesson on a part everyone takes for granted.
Love the shirt. I remember having that book as a child. Great lesson
I so can't wait to tackle this one! Thanks JJ....You're batting .1000 in a lot of our guitar lesson books!
Incredible job picking those parts out that from that huge mix. Really interesting.
Me quito el sombrero ante usted!
thanks James for this fantastic song
Awesome as always! One of my favs. Glad to see you back!
Great! Thank you
Thanks so much, I'm really glad to see you cover this song. I always thought this song *sounded* really hard. Rhythm is one of my favorite things in songs like this.
That IS a really cool part! Always loved the self-depricating nature of the lyrics...
gonna have my band cover this, much appreciated james🤙🏼
YEESSS!!! I've been waiting for this one! I can't wait to watch/learn this song! Thank you! 😎👍 Cheers - Luther
I've got to get that t-shirt!
I had all those book when I was a kid.
"Youuu, you make learnin' fun". Thanks for helping me come out of a rough few days by being able to make some new noises on my Strat.
I finally found a video that I like for this song I dig your style man!!
I actually saw James James lips and chin. That sounds pretty creepy after i read it🤣. Awesome lesson
Great ears great lesson and great guitar to do it with.
Cheers james i will give this a crack!
Amazing lesson as always, James! And LOVE the t-shirt. I had that book as a kid and it was so fun to introduce my own kids to it a few years ago.

I clicked so fast i love this song
Glad you enjoyed the Quad upload! Cheers!
Love your channel.
Never heard Quad in person and I am old enough.Seems anyone who owned a Quad stereo had the isolated tracks per se long before You Tube.
Thank you! Is there gas in the car?
Yes there's gas in the car!
And the windows are rolled up & locked.

I too have a Tab book, Hal Leonard Guitar play along Steely Dan that came with a Cd.Its a great book and does that rhythm part as well.
That's interesting. Most tab books butcher songs
Similarly transcribed in Total Guitar many years ago. Sadly my brother stole half my mags

I jus love the tee shirt, the tute is way beyond me tho...
Fun fact, Chevy Chase was the original drummer in Steely Dan!
Your shirt reminded me of the band, Clag and their song, Harry 🤷♂️
Probably Danny Diaz part.... Thanks 👍
Miss you James. Hope all's well - assuming you're getting notifications... you've probably switched them off.
I'm doing just great. I hope you are, too.
Coolio
what's the name of that guitar?
It’s the Page “Dragon Tele”
Well…not the actual one!
Iirc there is a video about that guitar in the channel.
Same riff is in a guitar pro tab
Is this the song Jimmy Page says is his favorite song?
Favorite guitar solo.
@@jamesjames9275 Ah yes, that's right. It was the solo, which is actually really good.
@@cidlopez Exquisite.
I never did understand why quad didn't catch on.
It did. They just started calling it surround sound instead. :)
A chin ! He has a chin lol
I wonder if you like any of Brinty Fox’s stuff or if you stick to rock and roll and not hair metal
have a look at the 12 year old doing the solo
