I had my first Weim for 14 years and she passed in 2016. Even though I researched before I got her, you just can’t imagine how energetic, intelligent and stubborn they can be. I enjoyed every minute I spent with her.....well, almost. Haha! Now I rescue senior Weims and I have Riley, who is a very sweet lady.
    I enjoyed the video!

the Weimaraner is a loving and loyal companion for active individuals and families who can provide them with the mental and physical stimulation they need to thrive. With proper training, socialization, and care, they make wonderful pets and lifelong companions.

I had Weimaraner for 11 years and she passed away November of 2019. She was the best dog I could ever ask for she was smart, attentive, and protective. She had a weird “ I wanna be right by you but don’t touch or look at me” attitude but it was just how she was. Instinctually she would catch a bird and drop it off at my dads feet and sit for a cue to go back out, she had never hunted before this. I miss her every day and it was a blessing to have her in my life for 11 years!!!!

Dear Patsy, I think you must be one of very few persons who can describe Weimaraner in such perfect way. I have had Dalmations for at least 28 years and now own a Weimaraner Dog. I think it has been my best decision in my life. He lives with me and sleeps with me and he is the most intelligent dog I have ever had. He is not aggressive at all and very , very intelligent and is most obedient and lovable . I would not want to own another dog breed after him after him and I really love all dogs,

This is a very nice comment, so nice you love your dog. I will buy a Vizsla after I have had a german pastor and later on a Basset-hound, just need a dog which motivates me, I am not married, so I have got plenty of time and love.

I have one weimaraner too 1 year old, he is very intelligent, protective and it's not to friendly one, I think he don't like strangers near him I am trying to change that because I treat him like a son and want to go with him to all place without having any problems.

We recently had to have our 11 year old Weime put down due to canine dementia. We miss him so much. He was out third one in a row, so we had 20 years with this breed. Magnificent dogs, oh and the stories we have to tell about them. Most of them so funny. Gentle gentle dogs, but very protective of the hooman family. Great dogs, but not suited to town or city life. They need rural space and plenty of exercise. We love them so much. Now we are older we have decided to get another smaller breed to suit our life style, but we will miss them..... forever

Only just seen your video, wow, I’ve had mine four years now she’s just an amazing girl, very very happy and such a character, love her to bits.
She is very people friendly especially with my son who is autistic she never leaves his side when we go out walking together.
These dogs change lives and have brought so much happiness.
Very proud of this breed 👍👍👍.

Got my first from local human society; he's been taken from someone who was starving him. He's now 16ish and still going, slowly. We've had 4 more since, in a row, to be Riley's friend. This video formalizes what we've learned naturally. We LOVE them. Ours are the blue. If they fit your lifestyle, they are wonderful. Thanks.

An excellent summary of the Weimaraner, we rescued one when he was two, because he was supposed to be a handful. Affection, exercise and boundaries and he was settled and great to be with.

THANK YOU FOR THIS BRILLIANT POST!!! I have been blessed with a perfect little family of four, when our two surprised us with a litter (Dad had just turned 7 months) - we kept the first two first born pups, both boys. Words do not exist that can explain all the love and pleasure I experience when I am surrounded but all that make them who and what they are! And as they grow up and older, I nourish and nurture each one's own individual personality as best I am able to - and it works. No crates ever, with the only damage between all four, a bit of a tear in a chair's armrest. We can leave them (ages, Mom 4 in June, Dad 3 in Sept and Boys 2 in July) running free in the house when popping out for as much as even more than 5 hours at a time, and know on our return, all will be as it had been left. I truly wish I could share so many stories with you! We even make sure our Youngest has access to the pool, as he gets hot quickly, and loves his multiple swims every day. Most importantly, training starts with its humans - and I believe in rather removing or making sure that exactly that what would bring them into trouble, should be removed and out out of the way... LOVE THEM ALWAYS, they return it in abundance!

I've hadmy second (Sir Monte Carlo) going on 8 yrs now and he has been so very loyal and truly lives up to the term of Velcro Dog, lol. They are in my opinion the smartest dogs out there. It is an absolute joy and to own a Weimaraner.

She barks when i turn in the driveway. I only do this a couple times a month when i go grocery shopping. She knows i'll be bringing her someghing she loves.

Ours weren't raised very well unfortunately (no one had time for them when they were puppies, but in general, everything here is true.) One of ours was very quiet and hardly ever barked, but the other would bark at just about anything.

I grew up with a pair of weimaraners. My parents bought the first, a grey female, when I was three, and the male two years later. Sophie and Mosby. They were great family dogs, but definitely required an owner that would calmly but firmly demand respect. The female was more attached to my father and the male to my mother, but they loved to play and cuddle with me as well. They both lived to 13 years and were wonderful dogs to grow up with. To anyone considering a weimaraner, it is not a joke that they are a high energy breed. You really have to have the right personality for them and either devote a lot of time to exercise or have a big yard and kids or other dogs for them to play with often. They can be very stubborn, so you have to be the boss or they will run your house! Our female was expelled from obedience school 🤣 but really was a pretty obedient dog in the long run. I will always have a soft spot for these dogs!

great video!! thank you so much for sharing!! I have a Weimaraner/ pit bull named Dash. we rescued him from a shelter and he is the best dog ever!! we are truly lucky to have him. Dash is a little over 2 years old. I bring him in the car with me every where I go. I kind of have to. if I leave him home, I'm bound to find something chewed up. but he LOVES to come with me! some times he's too smart for his own good, HAHA. Dash is so kind, loving and sweet. I grew up with one that belonged to a family friend and this one was a full blooded Weimaraner. The owners were German and bought theirs from Germany. what an amazing dog he was!! I hope to always have one now that I have my Dash. what great animals they are!!

I smiled through this entire video.
I really enjoyed seeing your long coat and that your Weimaraners had full tails.
My female Weimaraner loves her dolly’s. She has never destroyed any of them or any dog toy for that matter.
She is very possessive of toys and if Lenie has one she doesn’t think twice about going and taking it right out of his mouth ha ha. He lets her too. She would never even consider trying to remove the squeakers. My shar pai cross Lenie always needs to remove them lol.
Emma, is a Harrisburg line. She’s the dog of my lifetime. We are considering adopting a male that we saw today.
My heart hurt 😞 for him as Weims do terrible in shelters.
He was lovely and has a really gorgeous head, eye and nice confirmation. I don’t know his back story. He might be a lunatic but it’s true what you say and if he is we will fix him. He just needs to be in the right home that understands how they think and behave. Definitely in the wrong home they could be a nightmare.
The pups at the end were adorable.
I can’t live without them either and have had others who one day hope to see again in the next life.
Love ❤️ my Weimaraner and agree it’s the best dog breed in the world for me.

We recently had to euthanize our “almost” 17 year old Weimaraner. Missed his 17th birthday by only 2 months... Blue was an exceptional dog that underwent *REAL* service dog training at the ripe old age of 7 years. He took to it like he’d been doing it his entire life! He helped and loved his entire human family so we are *all* missing him terribly. 💔

I very much liked your video, thank you very much!
We are a Labrador family (since 1976) but are now planning to get a Weimaraner, since my son just got his hunting license.
In your video (minute 2:16) you mention that the breed originates from the Weimar Republic in Eastern Germany.
The breed was first "set up" by Grand Duke Karl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach in the early 19th century.
Stuctured and organized breeding began ca. in 1890.
The "Weimar Republic" was after WW1 and until Hitler´s grab of power, so 1918 to 1933 in what was then Central Germany, since at that time, our Eastern provinces (Königsberg, Preußen, Schlesien, Danzig, Pommern etc.) had not yet been stolen from us, that was only after 1945.
Having said that, when do you have your next litter?
We are looking to have a Weimaraner puppy (short hair, female) join our family.
    Danke und Grüße,
    R. von Studnitz

Sadly, we’ve just said goodbye to our beautiful weim. I remember borrowing Patsy’s book several times from the library - it was great help and she is correct in what she says, especially saying they will mirror your behaviour. Ask your breeder for advice as to which of the litter will fit your family best. They can see early on the character of the puppies and can help match your personalities so if you are a calm family, you won’t be given the cheeky, rambunctious one and vice versa. We had 11 wonderful years with our calm, placid, goofy girl. I cannot imagine having any other breed from now on. We currently have a big, weimaraner shaped hole in our hearts but maybe it will be filled again one day.

Just love these dogs. Very complex to understand for some people. Not at all for those that get. I have a long history with the reiteralm goldies line and have placed and retrained about 200 rescues. I have also had sheps and siberians, goldens and setters as well as Siberians and samoyeds. Loved them all!!! A well bred weim is a lot of dichotomies in one. I grew up where the original reiteralm goldies line was brought over. Adolph hauserman. This was during the 50's. I saw all of the pups temperament tested. These litters were literally in my crib and after placed through Adolf. He brought over and bred the original goldies reiteralm from Germany.

I live in an America and my mom always taught me to pronounce it with a "v" not a 'w". But in America it seems that it was easier to just let people incorrectly pronounce the name then to correct them. Good to hear it pronounced correctly. Just wish we would do that here.

My Labrador is just as she described, he’s been attacked 3 times on walks by dogs off leash and now has the mentality “I’m going to attack before I get attacked” even if the dog is a mile away, if he sees it he goes nuts. I hate it as I have had multiple trainers work with him and no one seems to be able to get him past it.

Two Weimies are better than one weimy, but not quite as good as three Weimies. Of course, nothing beats four Weimies, or perhaps five Weimies? What a fantastic idea!

Amazing video and so true. I however have an unfortunate weim health situation. My 2 year old weim Anson, who I got from a "reputable" breeder was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure as a result of her kidneys not growing to the appropriate size. Her life expectancy will be shorter, perhaps 6 or 7 years old with a very restrictive diet. Does anyone have any advice or experience in dealing with this. Karen

My uncle owned a female Weimaraner named Shotsie. We all loved her so much in the family. They clipped her tail when she was a puppy which most I've seen have the clipped tails just like a Doberman and a Rottweiler. So I have to admit I was kind of shocked to see the tails on these dogs had not been clipped. I think by clipping the tail it just adds to their beautiful physique. Love that they are called the "Gray Ghost". Perfect title for them for sure and very befitting. Wonderful and most informative vid about this magnificent breed of dog which happens to my favorite of the large dogs! :) Thanks Naturally Happy Dogs

clipping looks ugly on any dog and should only be done for medical reasons (also I think it is illegal to clip for aesthetic in europe)

    • @EmeraldJade66
      @EmeraldJade66 6 років тому +1

@@Te3time Traditionally, the tail is docked. In countries where this is still carried out, the docked tail should measure approximately 6 inches in the adult dog, and this is part of the American Kennel Club breed standard. In England and Wales, ear cropping is illegal, and no dog with cropped ears can take part in any Kennel Club event (including agility and other non-conformation events).
      Professional Breeder of Weimaraners:
Yes it is necessary. Yes a long tail can cause medical problems for the dogs, No docking does not cause medical problems down the road unless done by an idiot. Yes it is necessary to have the dews removed.
Now to go into detail~ It is necessary to dock a weimaraners tail because they are a sporting hunting dog, they were bred and are still bred to work HIGH brush fields. A weimaraners tail is a thin whip like tail, if it gets caught on the brush, it is going to be ripped off and it is HIGHLY painful and traumatizing. Now you may think this does not apply to house pets but you would be dead wrong. A weimaraner has what we colloquially call a happy tail, meaning the tails usually never stop wagging. Combine that with the thin whip tail, and you have a disaster in the making. Happy tail injuries are caused by the dog constantly hitting the tail on a hard surface usually a wall, this not only will permanently damage the tail, it is a bloody mess (so say goodbye to white walls for a while). You can not fix a tail, it has to be amputated as it will only split open again. Amputation is much more traumatizing. The pups are docked at 3-5 days old, the nerves are not developed at the time, they do not send out pain markers, the pups are more upset about being away from moms warmth than being docked. There are NO lasting problems, physically or psychologically, when done right.
Dews are a danger in this breed as well, as they are loose and can snag. Also causing a bloody mess (so bye bye white carpet for a while).
Breeders dock because at 3-5 days it is impossible to evaluate which pups are show/work pups and which are pets. Why let a good dog go to waste because of AR nuts and what not? Also because unlike the mass of humanity, we know the horrors of happy tails.
See what I do find funny is that people who are against tail docking are generally for spaying/neutering. Now s/n which is much more invasive and can cause a ton of medical problems down the road is not cruel, yet a simple procedure down at an age where the nerves are not developed enough to send out pain signals, and has virtually no after care is cruel. Something isn't right here.

Docked tails helped if the dog was used often for game hunting - as anyone who’s dog has injured it’s tail will tell you, those things don’t mend easily and a long tail would be a nuisance - but these days it’s not a necessary practice.

My dad had a weimaraner when I was a kid. & it was a great dog, but not for a novice owner. Ours wasn't well trained & the only time I walked her for three hours was when I got lost on the way back from my grans! Definitely don't get this breed unless you're committed to training and exercising them.
