  • You'll see every sort of bike the human imagination can conjure up racing at this elite track in Kent, England. From lowracers to highracers and from trikes to velomobiles to pedal cars riders come from far and wide to compete against the best. We cover it all at ground level and from high above Betteshanger Park. Turn up the volume and put on your headphones as we worked especially hard to bring you the incredible sounds as well as the sights of this exciting competition. We also have interviews with bike designer legend Mike Burrows and fellow UA-camr John Williams. Special thanks to ICE Trikes for sponsoring this event and our coverage. I loved the pudding!

    WOW! You guys have really done yourselves proud with this coverage. Very slick, and the drone shots really complement the action, giving a sense of the track that is not often seen.
    All to frequently I watch a video on U-tube and there is an irritating soundtrack that interferes with what would otherwise be very good. This time I want to congratulate whoever selected the music, it went well with the action, and I found myself tapping my foot to the whole of the first half! Can you tell me what it is, and where it might be found?
    An informative interview with Mike Burrows :-) He made some good points. Thank you for coming over and providing a 'mouthpiece' for HPVs, I think it will make a difference for more people to see the action as perhaps it has not been covered before, and with 39 comments before mine, I think I am not alone in thinking that!

    • @GarySolomon
      @GarySolomon  5 років тому

      Thank you, Con! I am humbled by your effusive praise. My goal with this video was to try to convey the action, color and excitement of HPV racing at its democratic best. I spent way too much time selecting and timing music to accompany the racing scenes but your kind words give me hope that this time was not wasted. The songs come from Epidemic Sound (www.epidemicsound.com/) which I find to have the best and most affordable offerings for this purpose. Lars Komm handled the drone and was responsible for producing those fantastic views from above. Thanks for watching and for helping me to feel that our work is being appreciated.

      I’ve been paying attention to 2 particular details that would involve HPVs: the aerodynamic design of Ferrari and Ford Le Mans cars from the 60s and ideas from velomobile design. Namely, having massive cogs for the crankset and cassette might prove to make velomobiles faster since having a 64 tooth nonetheless a 96 tooth would mathematically allow for a cyclist with cogs as small as an 8 tooth to go faster than 100 mph with a 90 cadence. It’s a matter though of getting those 2 theoretical cogs to work with a massive number of rear cassette gears without having serious derailleur issues. Either that or meticulously craft an entire Internal Planetary hub fitted to the rear axle, with a possible connection to an electric/gas motor engine. Could imagine placing engines as big as half a liter behind a driver and making it capable of going highway speeds with 250,300 miles to the gallon.
      By the way, does having smaller wheels at the front actually make an HPV faster? Would be interesting to hear.

Question is if you took the guys in that video and replaced the bikes with trikes and took out the cornering would those guys be able to do those speeds or anything close to them? I use the video only as an example of the level of rider and the flat land. The type of trike would be something like the ICE VTX.

      @@GarySolomon I'm sorry, this is a frustration I have with everybody who films bike racing. You almost never see full-speed action - everybody thinks slo-mo and messing with the speed makes things more 'arty'. But you can't analyse the performance of different styles of bikes if you don't know whether they're slowed down 20% or 50% or 75%... And this is particularly the case with unconventional bikes.
      I know how fast a good athlete on a standard time trial bike can go. Are the HPVs going half the speed, or quarter the speed, or...
      Could they actually be faster?
      From your video, I've no idea. They never seem to get above walking pace.
