What Does a Blow Off Valve Do?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- In this video we talk about the basics of how a blow off and diverter valves work.
We talk about what the blow off valve (BOV) and Diverter Valve (DV) do, their purpose and what the difference is. This video is for anyone looking for a quick overveiw on the turbo system and how the blow off and diverter valves fit into it.

The title should be changed to, turbo guide for dummies.
Simple, comprehensible, informative. Goodjob.
If you told me I'd crave the sound of my HKS BOV on my Tommy kaira M20b, before I purchased it almost 8 years ago, I'd say you were nuts. But even my wife loves it when she drives it. I'm 60. Crazy!
What I also like is the mixture running rich for a moment, so that on the overrun while heel-and-toeing under braking, I get pops and bangs, and sometimes flames out the exhaust as well. That's a win-win! :)
I'd buy it just for the BOV's eargasmic sound. *feels good man*
Download the APP Turbo (Blow Off Valve) by iFuture Studio :P Your welcome!
But how good is dosing
Stututu.
Mine just goes shhhh though.
@@isaacsellers700able Thats what they are supposed to do. If it only does stututu your BOV does not work.
@@positivesquad haha I know man, or if the turbo is fluttering
You talked about a blow off valve at the end of the video you release today (9 Oct 2022). I honestly don’t know what they do, so I did a UA-cam search and the first video to pop up was this one! A video from 4 years ago! Awesome!
Thank you for the video. Now I understand why they are needed. The mechanic who upgraded my intercooler, exhaust and tuned another 80bhp recommended an upgraded BOV. You made it easy to understand (I did go with his recommendation anyway as I have basic knowledge on cars).
So a BOV is basically a car burp
Or fart
Thank you for the explanation on differences between the two. BOVs vs. DVs isn't inherently obvious to someone who is new to turbo systems.
love these videos. you guys are so filled with knowledge. keep it up.
+richard conte Thanks for the feedback. We appreciate it very much.
I'm not a car person so I'm not very clued-up, and as a result of a comment on another video I had to look up the difference between turbo's and dump valves, I didn't know that turbo's went 'psssshhh' too, now I do, and why, cheers mate! 🤝 🍻
I have a 2021 Stinger GT awd, I thought I knew how turbos worked until I watched this. Makes so much more sense now. Looking into buying some blow off valves, but left w some education! Thanks!
This video was helpful like CRAZY! Thank you my man! Your words and diagram helped me out a lot!
Awesome!! So glad to hear
OMG!!!! u r a god to me !!! u taught that thing better than my engg teachers!!! u r a god!! i thought it was so complicated !!! but u just told in so simple and polite way ! that i understood what u meant to say :) ....thanks so much for the awesome video :)
A BIG THANKS FROM INDIA !

omg, now that makes sense.
My tune shop told me i can't add a blowoff valve. Now i understand why. I wanted the cool sound, but not at the expense of my engine.
Damn! I wanted one for the noise, but what you say makes a lotta sense. Electronic systems on cars these days even seem to know what you had for breakfast!!!!!!
Already had an idea how the turbo system works and where the dump valve fits in. His video gave great information and clear viewing of the whole process.
I just want a blow off valve for the noise
Same 😂🤣🤣🤣
Lol
Amen brother
Cool story.
“now go make me a sandwich” 🤓
99.9 % of people fit a blow off valve or dump valve as it is also called just for the sound...
I needed this because I want to put a turbo and a blow of valve for my little 200cc four wheeler
Maybe discuss diagnosing a bad one and talk about DV options, that are on the market and what situation, you should upgrade from a stock version.
Fantastic explanation and diagram excellent mechanical explanation very helpful thank you !
thank you for sharing this! it helped me a lot to understand how that valve system works
Good video but still wondering what opens or how to BOV opens up to let the pressure go.
I like the fact that he says if ur light Modding your car. No need to upgrade you diverter valve/ blow of valve. I’m anticipating once you going stage two you should consider upgrading the DV/BOV.
I didn't know what that pssshhh sound was untill I saw this video ! thanks (:
Wow that diagram was so beautiful thank you so much...i work with my grandad in the mod shop but never understood exactly where the bo valve goes before the throttle body...thak you!!!!!
can you do a video on the vacuum lines on BOVs and how they work?
really good vid man, I just got an A3 and was think of this. Now I know its a later addon.
Great video, now I know how it works, thanks!
Greetings from Costa Rica!
Really well explained, thanks
I love the sound my turbo makes on my Audi S5 since I added a BOV
So if it uses a spring for the bpv or bov. How much pressure does the spring need to be rated it? For higher pressure turbos do u need higher pressure rated springs?
So, is there any reason I can’t disconnect the low pressure recirc side from my factory valve, and blank off the hole in the side of the intake, so as to turn the factory divert valve into a vent to atmo BOV? The actual valve unit is functionally the same, isn’t it? Cheers!
Either way you go both are a nice upgrade compared to the plastic components from stock.
Brother can you please explain what exactly does BOV does and is it harmful for the engine or the turbo. I'm waiting for your reply brother
Awesome video. best DV/BOV explanation on UA-cam!
on top of the valve there is a tube connector, where does that tube goes to or comes from?
Your lead photo shows a DV with two lines. Most simple have only one line - for manifold vacuum. Q1: Is the 2nd line for turbo Boost sense? Q2: what benefit is an IPCV added to a simple DV (a DV with 1 vacuum line control)? Porsche 944 Turbo, Forge DV. Adding a Forge IPCV.
it blows off the turbo
I guss ur icon wants

I've Polo GT TSI can i use forge blow off valve in that ? Worth it or not?
can you buy one in india
I got a APR snail intake, I get both spool and blow off sounds.
So my question is. I recently bought a Forge atmospheric BOV for my 2014 mk6 gti 2.0tsi and the only mod under my hood is a CAI. In your opinion, can I install it now even with my stock ko3? or would it be safe to install it later this year when I purchase a ko4 or bigger turbo for my car? Thanks for awesome videos. You guys are amazing!
Any reason why there is sign of carbon/oil in air intake hose into the turbo?
Very clear and well described!
Nice video. So this might have impact on air fuel mixture but does it impact turbo lag? Like increasing it cause you have to rebuild the intake charge? Or am I missing something?
Hit boost
Nobody:
Blow off valve:sssssssssstututututututu
Christian Verde bovs dont dose they just psssssh
the stututututututuututut comes from the air backlashing into the turbo turbine when you dont have a BOV
Also that noise can come from the wastegate too if I'm not mistaken
@@LogieT2K My ASS!! All my 2020 GTI has is (APR intake, turbo inlet, turbo muffler delete, Forge BOV). Turbo flutter starts around 15psi, and sounds oohh soo sexy. I was surprised at how controllable the sound is, makes the car a one-note musical instrument. Drive light and granny it, it's barely heard. Dog it out a little, massive flutter and hiss. An excellent addition for driver/car familiarity and engagement. As for drops in boost, it's barely noticeable. Kinda like the car is, WITHOUT a BOV on it 😉
What damage is caused if your diverter valve isn't working? Let's say for like two years!!! (Found out mine was disconnected since I bought it on a 1.8L T, wondered what that bird flutter sound was after an acceleration :( . Somehow never threw any codes and wasn't caught in two dealer inspections!
Good video with clear explanation 👍
What are you thoughts on so etching like the GFB Dv+? On a 2.0t for instance.
How much boost pressure can the stock Volkswagen DV valve hold because it starts to have boost bleed off problems ?
Hey man nice video, thanx, i have a 2015 Suzuki Alto RS Turbo (standard KEI car) this small car has amazing fuel economy and has a decent torque as well. This is my daily driver. Question is, iam interested in adding a BOV, should i? the only reason why i wanna do this is the psssshhhhh sound hehe. If i do, will this affect my fuel economy? The existing setup has the recirculating thing iam sure. Please share your thoughts. Thank you.
I have a pressure gauge on my charge air side. How much psi should the max be before the blow off valve opens?
How do I know if my car has a mass airflow sensor? I got a mini cooper s 2014 f56, I always wanted to know, would it be ok to add a bov if what i'm going for is that sound? I'm not sure on how much turbo it exactly puts out but I've been told around 8 Psi
Once you installed the BOV Kit and want to switch to DIV, can you use the same kit or can you just swap the Valves?
I sent an email about this with no response.
If your car holds in 1 second by accelerate and also makes a deep heavy whistle sound. Can it be failing or leaking bov ?
im thinking of installing a forge motorsport BOV on my mk6 GLI, will this cause any problem with my turbo spool? will it make it my car to run lean or rich? please help
Everything makes sense now! Thanks
Quick question vw 1.2 Ltr gt tsi is it advisable to add a blowup valve with an ecu remap are we talking about power loss or gain?. Also also if I add an Hsk blow up valve for instance do I need to add a bigger turbo and inter cooler ? Please help need to figure this out
What's more dependable for higher PSI, diverter valve or BOV?
Woah, didn't expect to see Charlotte! Maybe I can swing by and you guys can explain to me what the hell is wrong with my car lol
Should I get it for 2014 f150?
My question, if i not install the blow off / valve, into my turbo car, it’s that will effect to my engine..? Or just effect to my turbo only..?
I see you have a video about how the rear center valance sound but you dont have an install video of it, i am buying a carbon fiber diffuser but i dont know how to take off the rear lower valance on my mk7 tsi could you maybe do a video on how to take it off
+iAmAJBish We are sorry but this is not something we are planning at this time.
I have APR Stage 1 on my mk7, would it be worth it to upgrade or will the stock one be fine. (The stock turbo valves sound aloud louder since stage 1) Thanks.
what I needed to know is how do the vacuum lines run on a BOV
I’ve upgraded to an CTS turbo blow off valve but I’m not getting no sound from it like that pssshh what could be the problem ? It’s an Volkswagen Golf mk7 1.8t tsi
My vortrch making 9 psi, should I use thinnest valve spring or medium one? Why do I want thicker spring and thin one
i got a skyline or infiniti g25 sedan and i can eaer " tssss " between gears, i bought it like this imported from japan, does improve the performance without having turbo ?, also i got a skyline 370GT cupe and i wanna to buy blow off valve to see whats happens also without turbo that would increace the performance?
Is it normal to hear a little bit of air being released from the blow off valve while cruising at higher RPMs? If I'm driving on the freeway and am in or near my power band, I can hear a little bit of air coming out before shifting. Also, if I am going wide open throttle from second to third, I don't here any BOV noise until the RPM's drop down and I'm getting on it again. I just bought a modified 135i and am new to the turbo world. Not sure what is normal and not. Car is running great and putting down appropriate dyno numbers.
So what is the differences between wastegates and dump/blowoff valves?? :/ they are all there to relieve the engine or tubine from the excess pressure into the whole syste, aren't they??
Say if you're stage 2... intake..dp..tune....would you recommend a blow off valve or a recirculated one?
hi,
is aftermarket blow off valve affect the performance or power? in a car.i have megane rs 250 which doesn't have any blow off. i am considering to buy forge system for my Renault magane but i am bit confused wit now.
Back in the day I used to soup up a few turbo dodge cars,,, non of those used mass air flow sensors,, all you had to do was trick the map sensor from showing a overboost condition
what makes the flutter noise when you install the forge bov is it safe to run @Deutsche auto parts
Can I install a BOV on 2010 A4 2.0t without any problem?
is their any advantage to venting to atmosphere besides the sound?
Hey guys, can you do the same thing but for turbo back exhaust.. with pics like you did here.. very helpful!
which BOV can I buy for a Buick verano 2.0T 2013? please if you can send me a link where I can buy it, will be very helpful
I recently bought a forge blow off valve for my Apr stage 1 Mk6 GTi and the CEL came on a day after I installed it. Should I remove it?
I have an aftermarket intake. I see how the bpv diverts air back to the intake but I don’t recall connecting any hoses to it, or taking any off the oem one for that matter. Am I missing smth here?
Not every turbo car has the same setup as shown in this video, my mk6 vw used to have the diverter valve located directly on the turbo, until I relocated it. If you can find where your diverter valve is located you can see how the air is redirected
@@NOTaGLI thanks! Now that I recall, the diverter valve indeed is right on the turbo. I’ll make sure to take a good look at it next time I’m under to see if I can find where it circulates to
Hey man if it's on the turbo then it's relocating the air right back there through the intercoolers outlet pipe, what kind of car is it? You might need to do a dv relocation if you are interested in using a bov
@@NOTaGLI I have a mk6 GTI. It was honestly just out of curiosity that I was wondering how the air came around but thanks a lot for the insightful relpies! I personally prefer having the dv more since I feel it has a more practical use.
Yeah man I just picked up my mk6 jetta maybe 6 months ago and I have always loved modding my cars so I have been doing everything I can to learn as much as I can about this platform and I do like sharing my knowledge, happy to help
very good video, 10/10 explaination, would recommend
Good video. I have a mk7 gti, I always liked the phhhsss sound, but mk7 comes with diverted. It would be wise to upgrade the diverter according to this video?
+MegaDavO A BOV would work great on the MK7. We will have a DIY coming soon.
Should i install a bov for my new octavia Vrs ???
Will a normal bov work with a twin scroll turbo or will I need a certain type of bov.
so my completely stock 2017 gti s shows up to 33-34 psi under heavy acceleration.
i heard somewhere that uniwhatever max boost is somewhere between 20-25, and apr would be somewhere between 25-30. so stock being higher than that seems questionable. do you guys know if the built in boost gauge is accurate?
John David Dunson u have to subtract the 14 psi from atmosphere
Doesn’t account for atmospheric pressure
Flavio Stroher that’s what the fuck I’m saying!
What about on the skyline r32? would it mess up that air regulation too?
I know this might be a dumb question but im learning do u need a turbo for a blow off valve
Yes
Should the bov be open at idle?
keep in mind some valves have a hose to provide extra boost or vacuum on the spring side to keep it shut or to help it release faster 🖒
Can I install blow off valve on 2018 polo tsi Dsg highline? Will it work?
is it will be OK to install this on a ibiza 1.2 tsi?
can you guys do a review/install on bov on your mk7 gti please
+fernando martinez We are planning a DIY on this BOV deutscheautoparts.com/mk7-gti-golf-r-blow-off-valve.html on our MK7 GTI..... Stay tuned
Great video 👌👌👌
Nice Job brother
adding a cold air intake helps to make the bov louder.
are you stupid
lol have you done it before telling him his stupid, he's actually right.
a short ram makes the turbo louder too
Nathan Gelios c
Same as "open filter" i guess?
You'll hear intake air sound/spool up more easily too
what will you run on the gti fsi build
hello i got a VW tiguan 2010 (2.0T) gasoline i want to install a Blow off valve just for the sound, its ok? any system recommendation ?
How will the bov/turbo act if the spring isn't right for the pressure?
Jason Kellogg depending on spring size, it will either never open or leak boost. If it never opens because of a heavy spring it will cause compressor surge (very bad on the turbo) if it is too light of a spring chances are you’ll just leak boost but it will still function.
what would cause to a bov stay open all the time? I changed my stock bov for a turboxs sml(upgraded bov) brand new but stays open all the time same as the stock one?
Blow off valve 100% badass
