Another likely reason is there’s some regret about Mentor of the Meek because the council of colors feels it’s a bend/break for white, and in general WotC doesn’t much like reprinting things that’re out of pie (being much more likely to colorshift it to the right color(s) similar to Generous Gift in MH1 being Beast Within but white)
But...actually not? If I'm not mistaken, and quoting the Gatherer: "Mentor of the Meek’s ability checks the power of the other creature only as it enters the battlefield. Same, basilisk collar has been one of my favorite cards for a long time.. and look here's the perfect commander! Building 'deathtouch tribal' as we speak .
Yep. I have mono red pingers with Kumano, and being able to add black and white for more death touch and hatebear effects makes this way more interesting.
Hey guys, look forward to these videos every year - thanks for the great content; however, slight oversight - this deck can run Alesha as the commander (that is how I'm building it). Keep up the great work guys!
I'm actually going to be building a Saskia human tribal deck, using a lot of the cards from this precon as its core. Adding some green ramp to get more humans onto the field sooner with the accelerated mana sounds pretty good.
I guess since Jirina is ETB, you could go the flicker route too ? Cast her once or twice, the blink for 1 or 2 tokens each blink ? Humans are also known for nice efficient ETB's so...
I've personally found crackling doom to be an over performing card whenever i've played it in my mardu decks so i'll be keeping it in when i build Kelsien, otherwise great vid yet again guys
Just want to clarify: At 52:40 about, you DO NOT have to equip it to something else. You can choose to target the already equipped creature and choose a new color. The only ones you would have to move around are the equipment that give shroud.
I feel like Jirina is more of an aristocrats commander. I think the additional body on etb is just great and allows for infinite mana, token, etbs, and death triggers if you have pitiless plunderer and ashnod's altar out, given either that jirina has been cast once already this game or you have another creature to sacrifice
"I don't know why Silvar and Trynn are partners" well you see "frees" people from the city so the other can "free" them from their life... I still am not comfortable with it to be honest
I think the idea is that the human made a pact to gain power with the monster, and in return they must feed it sacrifices, lest it feast on them instead.
I didn't connect they we're partners lorewise at all when I read the cards, more like connected by fate or circumstances! Quite the contrast compared to older partner cards these two.
Coat of Arms, Door of Destinies, Vanquisher's Banner, and Icon of Ancestry work well in Mardu Humans too. They all provide anthem effects and in the case of Banner and Icon, some card advantage.
I literally name every Human Tribal deck I build some sort of The Killers lyric or song title. Great choice. This is my first time watching your podcasts during a release season. They have been great. I’m going to buy this deck and use your advice! Keep up the good work.
Angel of Glory's Rise + Fiend Hunter = sweet continuous reanimation engine for human tribal, plus an infinite sac outlet for both Ashnod's Altar and Silvar. :) In fact, I'm surprised you didn't mention Fiend Hunter in the in-cards: with Silvar and other sac outlets, it can be used to exile creatures permanently.
Holy crap you guys, that singing in the beginning was awesome. I don't know the song, but man that was great! Edit: If I was going to build around Jirina, I'd probably run a lot of flicker effects, maybe even cutting down the human synergies for them. Jirina makes the tokens when she enters the battlefield, so flickering her will continue to make tokens, so repeatable flicker effects like Angel of Condemnation and Conjurer's Closet or even instants like Ephemerate can just make you get a lot of dudes real fast, and 3/1s are very impactful. You also get to run utility like Mangara, Ravenous Chupacabra, Flame Tongue Kavu, and Yarok's Fenlurker. Since you're probably cutting a lot of the humans to slot in the flicker targets, you could also run Conspiracy (which just had a fancy reprint) to turn all those utility dudes into buff Bois thanks to Jirina, and that can even provide a combo with Xathrid Necromancer and a sac outlet, since the zombies it creates would also be humans.
Fireflux Squad might as well be called "Belmont Squad"; I can almost squint my eyes at the art and see, from left to right, Sypha, Trevor and Alucard. :D **Bloody Tears starts to play in the background**
I think it has to do with the fact that one card removed from the deck is the other half of the commander partners. Normally it be 99 cars but because you're using the partner pair it's only 98. So they did take 10 out it's just one of them was the other partner.
@@KelrictheMinion This doesn't add up. If you count the other partner as the tenth remove, after adding all the upgrades you end up with a 99 deck and 2 generals. That's 101 cards! :O
Josh and jimmy hate my pet card? Humble defector is know as the village bicycle in my playgroup :D he gets passed around everywhere. There are many ways to make it more useful for you and less for your opponents too. You can pass it to the weakest player at the table (with a deal) that they have to pass it back. You can also use it and sac it in response (then recur it with Alesha). My favorite use for it is to use it with Samut. Activate it, then activate samut to untap it and activate it again. 2 mana draw 4. It’s the perfect card to balance out the table. Just don’t give it to the strongest person, and he has to deal with 3 other players each drawing +2 cards a turn.
51:33 You guys probably misunderstood how this card works(or I did, idk xD). It applies Man-ah-che for your creatures too, since *you* attacking your opponents also satisfies her conditions. It's a bit strange to misunderstand, since its wording is similar to Edric, Spymaster of Trest's effect.
I think I would run Jirina as commander because I like the Ashnod's Altar - Nim Deathmantle combo. as long as you cast her for the second time or bounce her with a card like Ephemerate, you can go infinite with soldier tokens. 2 other cards( witch could also be our commander but I'll put them in the 99.) would be Ravos, Soultender and Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder. The last cards I would add would be Archetype of Courage, Queen Marchessa and Iroas, God of Victory. Other cards to consider would be Spear of Heliod, and Haktos the Unscarred. Not budget I know, but great cards to add I think.
What I love about Commander is that Sanctuary Blade is one of Commander's Quarters favorite cards, but Command Zone doesn't like it at all. We all see different things when looking at the game and what it means to us.
Same, I love the card, it is creative design wise and having protection from a color can be powerful, but I can see the point that a "Sword of X and Y" is gonna be a better option
I think the best card is 100% the white card that says "it you control your commander you can cast this for free" that card just fits into so many decks and works so well in the agro aspect of this deck. Deffinatly cant wait to pick this up!
Btw with Jirina Kudro as the commander, Pitiless Plunderer, and Ashnod's altar she goes infinite commander casts after casting her for the second time. With that combo she might be a competitive combo commander.
I'm stoked you guys decided to go with Trynn and Silvar and lean into the aristocrats strategy. That's definitely what I plan on doing. I like the idea of human tribal, with some token aggro that gets value from aristocrats style cards. It obviously b lows the budget, but Anointed Procession feels like a must include in this deck and I wish they would have reprinted it here as it is up to 15 bucks or so. With Trynn and Silvar out you could sac a human token to Silvar each combat and then gain two to net one with Anointed Procession.
Teysa seems like a pretty good include. The lifelink from tokens and the aristocrat subtheme additional effects work very well with the partner commanders.
Bonder's Ornament should have been 4,T: Draw a card. The cost to activate this ability is reduced by 1 for each opponent that controls a card named Bonder's Ornament or something similar, then it would have been meh rather than bleh
Verge Rangers is 100% going into my Elsha of the Infinite deck (my first ever Commander deck, built off of Josh's advice!), as it covers one of her weaknesses. So good. I am totally going to run Vrynn and Silvar with this deck. So much fun. And I don't normally like Aristocrat tactics, but this one has my mind changed.
I believe you misread the commander, Jirina. As her ability triggers on etb, not on cast, you get x 1/1 tokens for the number of times the commander was cast this game, not necessarily herself. And Prosh only triggers on his own casting, though he does trigger even if countered.
here's something I don't think I heard you guys discuss: Jirina is great with flicker effects!! Since the tokens she creates are ETB (as opposed to Prossh), you can cloudshift/eerie interlude/reanimate or what have you for the tokens!
Giving Kelsien Deathtouch is very easy in Black, increasing his ping damage in Boros colors is pretty easy, and using flicker/blink effects or Thornbite Staff to untap and kill more racks up EXP counters. I'd play both Daxos and Kalemne for EXP payoffs. After Kelsien clears the board, Kalemne can one shot someone or Daxos can make gigantic tokens to pummel multiple people.
So i agree with taking out Humble defector if you go with the main commander or the partners, but with Kelsien out you can tap the humble defector to draw two cards, give it to an opponent, and then just kill it with Kelsien and get the experiance counter. That could be real fun. But yeah only keep it in if you run Kelsien as the commander.
A similar arguement for the Titan of Eternal fire. I still agree that cards kind of bad, but its better i think when you have a Kelsien who can finish them off and wants to.
I think the idea behind Humble Defector is that you can sacrifice it while its ability is on the stack before an opponent gains control of it and still draw two cards. I do a similar thing with Wishclaw Talisman & Costly Plunder. LMK if this isn't how the interaction works.
If you are playing brawl you would necessarily want to follow the 10 draw 10 ramp etc outline bc you start at 25 life and the match will 1 v 1 more often than not making it essentially singleton standard with a card youll always have access to
when you guys talk about frontier warmonger, it sounds (to me atleast) as if you're assuming that it only gives menace to opponents creatures. my understanding of the card is that it gives menace to your creatures as well (because it only asks for creatures attacking your opponents, theres no restriction on who has to be the owner of the attacking creatures), so....a 4 mana 4/4 which gives menace to all my stuff doesnt seem too bad imo, especially since we're gonna be attacking with a lot of (albeit small) stuff, which means there is a pretty big chance of more face damage than usual
You're right, it's great. They also glossed over that because it protects the opponents' creatures on attack, they are going to be much more aggressive, aiding your game plan. What's more interesting is, that they advertised Titan Hunter of all things, probably the worst card of the deck.
If I was gonna play the face card I'd definitely add Iroas into the deck. He's just good value, menace and no combat damage changes the game super quickly
For me, I think I would run Jirina Kudro. I would add flicker effects like Conjurer's Closet to blink the commander. The token making effect isn't a cast trigger it is an enter the battlefield trigger. I personally like her better than the partners because of the +2/+0 that it gives all your humans. I think that allows you to be very aggressive with the tokens. Honorable mention if you wanted a more expensive card would be anointed procession. I think you could even still do the aristocrat style with jirina although you don't have a sac outlet on your commander.
Was Pitiless Plunderer overbudget or was the deck just not big enough into the aristocrats strategy to warrant it? Both it and Pawn of Ulamog would be great includes.
Was surprised you didn't mention Anointed Procession, since a token doubler would give you a lot of more things to sac and swing with. At least I was surprised at first, because then I remembered it's like a $15 card and this is a budget upgrade video.
The Mana Rock that can also draw a card for whoever owns one. What about running it in partner commander decks? Our Emperor trinity decks? I threw one in my mono white Odric deck because it’s starving for card draw.
I think I still got a Teysa Karlov I drew from Ravnica Allegiance somewhere… A human doubling death triggers and benefits tokens a bit for a kind of human tribal aristocrats deck with some tokens included, I think thats Beautiful.
I am thinking of switching the Kelsien with Teysa Karlov for a Aristocrat aproach with the deck . I am pending between this deck and the Symbiotic Swamp deck or even buying both, because i like Orzhov and they both have some orzhov engines. Looking forward to that upgrade guide fot the Symbiotic Swamp deck. And great Nail Polish Jimmy i like it
Excellent point, but even if you would like to combo, Jirina triggers of the number of time you've cast a commander (not necessarily herself). Having partner commander in the command zone increase her trigger easily and makes the combo potential less obvious as you need to draw or tutor for her. I wasn't a fan of this precon, but it's warming up to me now.
@@clanechelon oven if you just cast her the first time, you can have infinite death triggers as she will always enter with 1 other creature. You sack both to altar and pay 4 to bring her back. If you have any sort of aristocrats creature on the field you can kill everyone. Also with the addition of anointed procession, she can enter with 2 tokens and ergo go infinite on the board. This combo is very easily done with black tutors, stoneforge mystic, steel shapers gift, enlightened tutor, and a bunch of other search effects making it reliable. Casting her once (when you're set up) should win you the game on the spot. Casting her a second time is even more potent.
@@parkercole6389 Yeah for sure, your plan is just really obvious if you use her as the commander. Gotta hope she doesn't get countered. I guess I'm just not a huge fan of combo-y commander in the command zone or at least those too obvious. Makes the threat assessment of your opponent really easy. The partner commander just opens up more option and Jirina in the 99 isn't a problem imo. I guess it depends on your playgroup. I play really casual with my friends but if I get a combo win one time, they will be ptsd and keep counter spell in their hand forever if I play the deck again xD
@@clanechelon I mean I guess it's all up to personal preference. I would prefer to have a streamlined consistent combo (even if it's obvious. Just have cards to help with counters like the new red card, phyroblast, mana tithe, rebuff the wicked ect ect) than a surprise commander. I'm not saying the partners are bad, but to me they just sent fast enough.
The Temur deck is still my favorite thus far. I just think it's got the most interesting reprints and card interactions. But I really do dig the theme of the Abzan deck.
8:45 I'd take Silvar & Trynn as partner commanders, then add Angel of Glory's Rise and Fiend Hunter as combo win option with Silvar as sac-outlet for it in the command zone. The precon also already has some cards like Zulaport Cutthroat in it.
Could you consider putting corpse knight in the deck (2/2 for white and black, whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control, each opponent loses 1 life) especially with partner commanders
Sanctuary Blade is good, it just isn't good in tokens. In voltron it could be a good budget include. I really don't get you hate on the Imputs cycle. The read one seems pretty strong. Also fun fact impetus has no plural.
I’m planning on playing Jirina Kudro (mostly because I don’t have a go wide deck yet and I think it would be fun to have one). I still like a lot of your additions, but with Jirina at the helm these are some cards I’d add: 1. Coat of Arms 2. Secure the Wastes 3. Lightning Greaves 4. Herald’s Horn 5. Obelisk of Urd
I would add Jirina in the 99 in an human matter deck or in an Saskia deck. By adding green and double token generator to go wider. You could add some etb utility so either blink it or double the trigger for value and of course adding more payoffs.
Here are 4 cards that I think would work well for a more aggressive strategy. 1. Archetype of Aggression 2. Rowdy Crew 3. Berserkers’ Onslaught 4. Anger (not a human but haste is amazing in this deck)

You can just subtract it with a calculator on your phone. It makes more sense the way they did it.
@@MarvelOfRain i could also take the decklist and lookup all the values myself and I'm not saying it doesnt make sense the way they did. I'm suggesting presenting it in this alternative way, there's no need for any action from the audience. Which I think would be an improved experience. But you're right, not too hard to do.
Josh: There’s no way to remove experience counters
Me: *SUNCLEANSER*
I was thinking the same thing.
Karn Liberated
So excited for this deck tech. I’m most excited about this one, Temur, and Sultai! Thanks for the great videos, keep up the awesome work!
“Aristorat theme”
it's the Aristocats sequel
Editor must be furious....
Beat me to it lol
Bernardo Curvello the funny thing is that they have like four different editors, im surprised they didn’t catch that.
Ey everyone's human.
Sometimes you look at a decklist, see half the cards, and assume the rest are relentless rats
Just picked up this deck this weekend and played it twice stock. I really love this deck. I changed out a few cards but I'm definitely going to use your suggested upgrades. Thanks for the tips. 👍
You can remove experience counters with suncleanser
Puresteel Paladin A lot of people forget he exists
@@travisbrandt8663 how does puresteel paladin interact with experience counters??
SmilodeX MTG suncleanser. . . . From Core 19.
SmilodeX MTG the dude’s name is Puresteel Paladin.
Yeah, but that's so niche. There're so few cards that care with experience counters, even the ones that exist in these decks are very niche.
Kelsien is my favourite commander from this set. He's every RPG character I've ever made and I absolutely want to build a deck around him :D
Same dude! I am so stoked to build him! Share a decklist when you get it! I am working on mine :)
Same, basilisk collar has been one of my favorite cards for a long time.. and look here's the perfect commander! Building 'deathtouch tribal' as we speak .
Ah, the stealth archer. A man of good taste.
36:30 Kathleen, I feel your pain.
Also, brilliant way to bring her on the show!! Lmao
Kelsien seems incredible with Forbidden Orchard
Had not thought of that......... you just game me an idea
The content you guys do is so awesome. I couldn't even find the spoiler video of this deck. Thanks for doing this
You guys harmonized phenomenally in that intro!
General kudro of drannith, imposing sovereign, elspeth sun’s nemesis, hanweir militia captain, Mythos of Snapdax, Temple of Malice, Temple of Silence
"I don't know why Silvar and Trynn are partners"
well you see "frees" people from the city so the other can "free" them from their life... I still am not comfortable with it to be honest
I think the idea is that the human made a pact to gain power with the monster, and in return they must feed it sacrifices, lest it feast on them instead.
First thing I thought of, being devoured is being Freed in a sense.
It's not about power. They're bonded. It's like feeding your animal best friend the people you don't like.
I didn't connect they we're partners lorewise at all when I read the cards, more like connected by fate or circumstances! Quite the contrast compared to older partner cards these two.
@@selkokieli843 right but look at trynn's face and her pose. She has definitely not got the best intententions.
Coat of Arms, Door of Destinies, Vanquisher's Banner, and Icon of Ancestry work well in Mardu Humans too. They all provide anthem effects and in the case of Banner and Icon, some card advantage.
23:14 "Aristorat" heh, should definitely be a card in the next un-set.
I want to see this Aristorat Deck that you teased at 23:23. Great video as always! ;)
I literally name every Human Tribal deck I build some sort of The Killers lyric or song title.
Great choice.
This is my first time watching your podcasts during a release season. They have been great. I’m going to buy this deck and use your advice!
Keep up the good work.
Your harmonies were on POINT this week!
Angel of Glory's Rise + Fiend Hunter = sweet continuous reanimation engine for human tribal, plus an infinite sac outlet for both Ashnod's Altar and Silvar. :)
In fact, I'm surprised you didn't mention Fiend Hunter in the in-cards: with Silvar and other sac outlets, it can be used to exile creatures permanently.
Its 'Human' by The Killers
Fireflux Squad might as well be called "Belmont Squad"; I can almost squint my eyes at the art and see, from left to right, Sypha, Trevor and Alucard. :D
**Bloody Tears starts to play in the background**
wait... did they only remove 9 cards? am I missing something?
And they added 11 as well
They didn't add 11 they gave an option between 2 cards for a combat trick. I only counted 9 removes as well though.
I think it has to do with the fact that one card removed from the deck is the other half of the commander partners. Normally it be 99 cars but because you're using the partner pair it's only 98. So they did take 10 out it's just one of them was the other partner.
I think they where in a budget too
@@KelrictheMinion This doesn't add up. If you count the other partner as the tenth remove, after adding all the upgrades you end up with a 99 deck and 2 generals. That's 101 cards! :O
Definitely picking this deck up! It’s my favourite looking out of the 5
That song... was actually super great, like applauds for real.
Agree! That card rules! It gives all my creatures menace.
@@paulferras9160 Yeah, definitely. I also think Commander's Quarters likes it because it is budget and that is what the channel is geared toward.
With frontier warmonger wouldn't your own creatures gain menace when attacking an opponent? Seems like a good payoff for you attacking your opponents
Yes
I would love to be on that set lol, such a great atmosphere
taking out crackling doom is questionable imo
you guys are the coolest. You give my whole family such great info and entertainment. Thank you for your work. Keep spreading MTG love.
With Jurina you could do Panharmonicon and white blink spells. Or maybe Brought Back on Isochron with sac outlets...?
Wow that Intro. I could replay it all day.
I'm REALLY excited about this deck and I'm glad you guys went the aristocrats route! Aristocrats is so fun!
Bonder's Ornament should have been 4,T: Draw a card. The cost to activate this ability is reduced by 1 for each opponent that controls a card named Bonder's Ornament or something similar, then it would have been meh rather than bleh
I really like Silvar and Trynn, they protect themselves, "combo", sustainability etc!
So whats the 10th card to take out, or did i miss one somehow? it seems like there wasnt a mention of 10 cards to remove.
I'm digging the painted nails 😂 and fantastic content guys! Keep it up!
What's more interesting is, that they advertised Titan Hunter of all things, probably the worst card of the deck.
i find Queen Marchesa interesting for a Human theme deck also.
If I was gonna play the face card I'd definitely add Iroas into the deck. He's just good value, menace and no combat damage changes the game super quickly
Why not add in "Helm of the Host" so you can put tokens in of "Jirina Kudro" that her etb triggers additional times?
Oh yes, making token copies of her works and is really strong. If they are non-legendary, you also get the boost, which stacks amazingly.
I do like that Jirina is at least an ETB and not on cast. conjurer's closet and some blink could help, but im more on the partners.
I was not excited for this deck, but now I am, may use your build!
I'm actually very excited for Kelsien. I have most of a decklist done and I'm excited to play it as soon as possible.
57:54 "Marshall Impetus" earned this video a like
Was surprised you didn't mention Anointed Procession, since a token doubler would give you a lot of more things to sac and swing with.
At least I was surprised at first, because then I remembered it's like a $15 card and this is a budget upgrade video.
Are we human or [Hanweir Lancer]
The Mana Rock that can also draw a card for whoever owns one.
What about running it in partner commander decks? Our Emperor trinity decks?
I threw one in my mono white Odric deck because it’s starving for card draw.
I think I still got a Teysa Karlov I drew from Ravnica Allegiance somewhere… A human doubling death triggers and benefits tokens a bit for a kind of human tribal aristocrats deck with some tokens included, I think thats Beautiful.
I'm wondering now which of the five precons won't get played on game knights. Or if they do a first time ever five person game.
Theres a One mana black socery that removes 5 counters from anything. Its a Common from War of THE spark that depicts liliana
Legendary creature - Cat Nightmare
So we now have double nightmare creatures?
Nice opening song. Really appreciated it.
The black impetus is possibly a card to start the sanguine//blood combo started if you happen to have no other ways of starting it
I am thinking of switching the Kelsien with Teysa Karlov for a Aristocrat aproach with the deck .
I am pending between this deck and the Symbiotic Swamp deck or even buying both, because i like Orzhov and they both have some orzhov engines.
Looking forward to that upgrade guide fot the Symbiotic Swamp deck.
And great Nail Polish Jimmy i like it
Not gonna lie, that singing was quite good this episode, maybe the best I've heard from you guys yet.
"trynn will make you more tokens than jirina will"
*NIM DEATH MANTLE & ASHNOD'S ALTAR HAVE ENTERED THE CHAT*
Cringe
The Temur deck is still my favorite thus far. I just think it's got the most interesting reprints and card interactions. But I really do dig the theme of the Abzan deck.
My thoughts exactly. Definitely getting temur but abzan is tempting as well
Not gonna lie, I think I want the Jeskai Cycling deck more. So flexible, but this is my second
8:45 I'd take Silvar & Trynn as partner commanders, then add Angel of Glory's Rise and Fiend Hunter as combo win option with Silvar as sac-outlet for it in the command zone. The precon also already has some cards like Zulaport Cutthroat in it.
Just a minute into the video and I already love it.
Great choice for song
Could you consider putting corpse knight in the deck (2/2 for white and black, whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control, each opponent loses 1 life) especially with partner commanders
Sanctuary Blade is good, it just isn't good in tokens. In voltron it could be a good budget include. I really don't get you hate on the Imputs cycle. The read one seems pretty strong. Also fun fact impetus has no plural.
I’m planning on playing Jirina Kudro (mostly because I don’t have a go wide deck yet and I think it would be fun to have one). I still like a lot of your additions, but with Jirina at the helm these are some cards I’d add:
1. Coat of Arms
2. Secure the Wastes
3. Lightning Greaves
4. Herald’s Horn
5. Obelisk of Urd
I would add Jirina in the 99 in an human matter deck or in an Saskia deck. By adding green and double token generator to go wider. You could add some etb utility so either blink it or double the trigger for value and of course adding more payoffs.
You should add pitiless plunderer and smothering abomination because they do good in my prossh aristocrats deck
Here are 4 cards that I think would work well for a more aggressive strategy.
1. Archetype of Aggression
2. Rowdy Crew
3. Berserkers’ Onslaught
4. Anger (not a human but haste is amazing in this deck)
Boreas Charger is a pretty good white ramp if you have a sac outlet for instant value
