Hi there, I know this is a 5 year old video now: However, I just wanted to point out that Epson provides a driver download for this scanner to make it work with Image capture. It's under the Drivers list for this scanner on the support site. I double checked to see if this was also supported as I purchased the V600 a couple weeks ago to have a dedicated scanner, and I have that set up to use Epson's software AND Apple's built in tools, and they both seem to work correctly. I'm sure you may know about the support, but it's amazing to see how many people many not know this, and not purchase the scanner, or purchase, and assume it's broken, or isn't supported on the Mac due to lack of information. Have a great day!
@@breaksonn the 600 can do film scanning and a lot more professional geared features, it also is larger and has it's own power supply. The 39 is usb powered and smaller. I I don't own the 39 personally, but I am going from the feedback I've seen and heard in videos from people who have it.
@@breaksonn V600 is a CCD scanner (it's like having a special photo camera inside, with a lens and a CCD detector). V39 is a CIS scanner. CCD scanners have much much longer depth of focus, meaning they can scan originals that do not lie flat on the glass. The tech is significantly more expensive, which also allows them to put more high end electronics in. On the other hand, V600 also has the transparency mode, and if you don't need it, you are paying extra and getting an even bulkier device (thick lid). I would love to see side by side comparison if the two scans/software/speed for flat originals on v39 and v600.
I was just thinking 'So this video is 8 years old, that makes it from ~2016... who the hell still had a CD drive even then?" I think the last time I had a CD drive in a computer was maybe 2008.
Thank you so much for these reviews, having the artist's perspective helps enormously. If you have very large artwork (say 56cm x 76 cm) the fact that you can remove the lid on the Epson v39 must help a lot as you can just slide it around and scan the different parts. Great job with your videos, thank you so much again!
Teoh, this is an excellent review. Thank you! It was just what I was looking for. I love how you contrasted your comments with another (Canon) alternative product, and you gave specifics for everything that you discussed.
That's very helpful for me. The quality quite same. Now in Thailand price of Canon 220 is 2800THB. and v39 is 2190THB. So now I can decide which one is reasonable for me. Thank you bros.
I just got my EPSON scanner after using for many years a Neat scanner. Visiting my family and giving it a try scanning family photos and doing some restoration.
I am planning to do the same thing with our family photo album do you recommend a scanner for that for pictures from the 60s and 70s that are some may be faded color on the photos.
There's a mistake in the video. I almost didn't buy it because you mentioned that it won't work with native Mac Image Capture, but this isn't true. There are ICA drivers and I can use it with native Mac scan util. Thanks for the great video! It was super helpful!
Thank you for the review. I bought the Epson to replace the Canon scanner that you also show. I think the hinges on the Canon are poorly made. Mine snapped after a year of use so I wanted a scanner with a detachable lid. It does seem as if the Canon will be better at capturing colour.

Thank you so much, this was just what I needed! I used the V850 the other day and had issues with the water color paper structure not showing. Since this one is way more affordable I'll go for this one.
Thanks for this review. I needed to buy a new scanner for my illustration work and this + your review of the Canon LiDE 220 were super helpful -- really clear and answered all my questions. Thanks!
The color quality after scanning is subjective. Just like comparing SLRs (Sony, Canon, Nikon etc) which one produced better color science and its never ending debate which is the best. Similar case to Epson and canon scanners. Which scans better colors . Everyone has its own taste of color. This make the masses confused at times. Your color "green" in Epson maybe bland to your taste while others is the perfect "green" or vice versa to canon. The quality of monitor/printers can contribute to the scanning output as well. If you have a standard monitor, don't expect good colors after scanning and blame the scanner after. You have to match them. If your serious about it. a "CALIBRATED" monitor dedicated for photography (this will produced life like colors in your screen), a good scanner (epson/canon), and editing software using the color profile of the monitor (ICC color profile) to print and a good color printer (not a standard all around printer) for best result. By the end of the day its your budget, its your scanner and its your color liking what's important. Hope this helps.
Thank you so much for this post! I was searching for a review of this scanner and stumbled upon your video. I've been watching your art vids for over a year but didn't know that you have this one haha :p
Hello, How fast does it scan ? I mean I saw in the video but you don't precise at what DPI it is. In your Canon LiDE 400 video you show the speed at different DPI. Which scanner is the fastest at low DPI? Thanks
Are your old photos film photos? If so go with the Epson scanners that can scan film. Otherwise, this is good for scanning photos that are already printed.
Great video Teoh. Thanks. It's great to be able to watch a video before you buy something. I used to use that same software 7 years ago so yes it is old. Other thing I noticed when you were scanning you "moved" the book. A big no no. Put another book on it to keep it still. Don't hold it by hand. :) Also "saying" the type of USB plug would be handy, but I can get that from the specs. Thanks again.
It's a sketchbook. I have to press it down so that the pages are perfectly flat on the surface. If the pages are not in contact with the surface, even for 1mm, the image captured will be blur. If I happen to move my hand, the image will be blur and I will scan again.
If you think about it, the scanned image may not be saturated. All displays have different gamut values, so your image may be it's proper colour on another display :) Great video though! Might pick one of these up. Thanks!
Hi Teoh. Thanks for the reviews of Canon 220 & V39. The Canon here is more expensive than the V39. I want to scan my watercolor artworks, too. Which one would produce better results, regardless of the price? I (read all the comments on both reviews and I’m still confused which one to buy.) thanks for your help.
Thank you very much for your explanations. I was looking for a scanner for scannering documents and books. I didn't know which scanner to buy: canon lide 220 or epson v39. Now I think I will buy Epson because I read that sometime there is some problem to read canon sofware with windows.
A scanner like this looks perfect for my uses, but do you know if any flatbed scanners include SD card slots or USB ports to scan and save directly to external media without needing to use a computer at all? My least favorite part about scanners and printers is all the drivers and software, and I'd rather push a button and get an image file on a card of flash drive that I can put in Photoshop later.
I don't know of any scanner with microSD card or wireless. That's kinda similar to using a camera with SD card where you have to insert the SD card to the computer
@@teohyc Haha, I understand! But still, most cameras that aren't phones still use SD cards that way. I wouldn't mind even some way to save to the cloud over wifi, which I think is a possibility with some? Either way, thanks for these reviews!

I don't want it on when I'm not using it, and don't want to have to plug/unplug it all the time.
The scanner doesn't turn off. It probably doesn't use that much power on standby since it's not doing anything. The other Canon scanner I'm using also doesn't have a power button
@@teohyc I just dislike having things on whne not in use, especially with a blue light when I'm trying to sleep. It's pretty silly to not be able to turn something off, and poor design decision making. Thanks!
Hi Sr. What about the maximum paper size on the overall scanning area ?, I'm interested in scanning legal size documents, 8.5 in x 14 in. Thanks for the review
Thx for the great review. I would like to know if I can place a few, like 4, photos and scan all at the same time. If possible, would the scanner intelligent enough to separate the photos into different files?
I currently using it for scanning my artwork. But I always found issue than scanning system was very fragile to me. After scan for a while it would produce vertical line or many dead pixels that make me have to edit an artwork for a long amount of time. And cleaning the scanner glass didn't solved the problem too. What should I do ?
Thanks for your very comfortable reviews! If scan quality and user experience are the top two priorities, and I only have reflective originals, would you go for V39, LIDE 400 or V600? I was thinking of buying V600, but it's very old (old tech?), and I don't want to have to lift and put down the heavy lid all the time. I also like that CIS scanners are USB-powered, so one cable less to manage. However, quality is really important, and if V600 gives noticeably better quality on flat reflective originals, I will go for it. Any idea? If not-would you recommend Lide 400 or V39? My application is digitization (for family archive) of old photos and documents.
Reflective cannot be scanned because the light will reflect to the capturing "lens". You have to use camera to photograph reflective. Glossy photos should be fine.
Thank you for this review. I was looking for a scanner under 100€ and this one looks great. I want also scan my artworks with that. My old scanner is absolut crap! ;D I just bought this beauty right now! Haha
Does it scan 11x17 art boards with blue guidelines in one full scan or do I have to do multiple scans and stitch them together? Also, I am working with an HP mini laptop, but I have a disk drive, so will the software be compatible?
This is just an A4 scanner. It's not big enough to save 11x17 inches. You have to stitch them after scanning. As for software compatibility, you should check with their website and compare to your computer specifications.
Hi Teoh! I just subscribed to your channel...it's really fantastic. I have a question if you see this comment: now in 2022 what is your favourite scanner?
Hope you can help me with this problem I"m having. I'm not good with technical stuff. My Epson scanner is not picking up the the entire document. If I put receipt (for example) to copy to a 8 x 11 page it cuts part of it off even though there is lots of space. Any idea what I'm doing wrong or how to fix it
Got one for cheap from Carousell. Doesn't have the Installation CD though. When use the scan/copy functions - Can I use other program such as Paint or Adobe/Nitro PDF instead of it auto-prompts opens the Photoshop app?
hello, excuse me, would you know how to put 48 bits? I enter professional mode but at most, it gives me the option of 24 bits, do you know how I can put 48 bits?
@@slugware Maybe get CCD-type scanners where the paper surface does not need to be in contact with the scanning glass surface. Because when scanning books, the paper near the spine will curve away and is not in contact with the glass, and that scanned area will be blur with CIS-type scanners.
Does the scanner need to have software installed before it will power on? I bought a used one at a thrift shop and used a cell phone usb charge cable and it looks to have no power. So wondering does it have to have software before being able to power up?
Only one sheet at a time. If you want to scan documents, multiple sheets, it's best to get a scanner that can scan multiple sheets. This is an art/photo scanner.
Thanks. I I doubt to buy this scanner or Canon Canoscan Lide 220. I will buy canon scanner because I prefer the software. Thanks for making this video! I have been very useful to me.
Hello! I bought the Canon Lide 400, but so far the maximum dpi the scanner is able to do is 1200dpi. If I want to scan with more dpi (for very large Print-On-Demand-products), it says the file size is too big and just won't do it. Obviously for some people it works though, and that's my question: how can I scan with 2400dpi with the Canon Lide 400? Thankyou so much!
@@teohyc Thank you for your answer. It wouldn't scan files with more than 100MB, so typing in a higher resolution would just lead to an error message. In the meantime I found out that I had to check the box "Enable large image scans" in the settings. Since then it allows me to scan up to 4GB, which equals 3790 dpi. Maybe that helps somebody else. Have a nice day!
Hi just wanted to ask for your opinion on a scanner that you would recommend scanning drawing artworks before I try and decide to pick myself? Any help would be very appreciated
You said I think that you can not use any other software other than what comes with Epson, yes you can,I have an older cannon scanner that only works up to XP ,but this old scanner will work on Linux. I think the new scanner will also work on Linux.
I am here five years later looking at reviews for a photo scanner for my little sister to help me make a company logo for myself wth going on gotta super my man some love
Great job, Teoh..... lots of good info there. My big question is does the V39 Epson software work with Mac OS 15 Catalina? Also, I like using a bunch of stuff hooked up to a USB dock and would prefer that the scanner have a power off feature. Does either the Canon or Epson models you tried here have a power button? (.... or maybe you just hit any of the buttons.)
Hello Teoh, I am looking for a new scanner, do you know of any who don't have the issues with the buckling of the paper? Also, do you know if the Canon one can scan with Scaling? thx :)
Scanners that use CIS (Contact Image Sensor) will have problem with buckled paper, unless you press down the paper hard. I'm not sure what you mean by scaling. All scanners can scan at rather high resolution, so by default, they already have scaling.
the canon lide 400 was unavailable when i looked here. this scanner is the one i bought. thanks for reviewing even though its long ago. lol (EDIT) also, is the software of epson is still good nowadays? i bought it already because the canoscan wasnt available in the stores here today :(
I don't have any experience with printers. Really depends on the quality you're looking at. There are many reviews on Amazon. I'll personally check out Canon or Epson printers.
What do you call it when a scanner cannot focus unless the item is 100% flat on the glas surface (3:50)? I used to scan the inside of CD jewel cases for my homepage on my old scanner with absolutely no problems focusing in the depths of the CD case. What should I look for when buying a new scanner? Or is it just blind luck / bad luck? If you know. Thank you very much in advance.
hi! would you make a comparison scan with the canon lide 220 and epson v39 but with the max dpi and 48-bit color setting in RAW or TIFF format? very helpful review btw.
+Maggy Frog Scanning at the maximum resolution without enough RAM will possibly crash your computer. I doubt many artists will scan at resolution above 600dpi. And even at that resolution, the file size is already incredibly huge.
thanks for replying :) i'm actually going to get either the canon 220 or the epson v39. currently i have hp deskjet office printer/scanner but it's meant for just documents and in my test scans for colored pencil drawings, the highest resolution i can get is 1200x1200 at 24-bit and i'm still not satisfied even when i save the scan as tif or raw. my main problem is not really the resolution or insufficient RAM but the color depth of 24-bit since the color depth dictates how accurate the colors are scanned. so even if i process my scans in PS, they are still initially in 24-bit and i can't for the life of me get back the lost color nuances from the drawings i worked on for hours and hours even if i change the setting to higher than 24-bit in PS. edit: also, i compared the jpeg image to the tiff one and as far as the colors go, they are identical LOL. again, this is because of the 24-bit max depth. jpegs are actually only 24-bit and the RAW or TIFF format are meant for higher than 24 but it's pointless that the hp scanner i have allows me to save as RAW or TIFF at basic color depth.
Ah I see I'm trying to go for a cheap but decent portable scanner that can scan up to 11x16 paper. For comic pages. Do you know of any that might fit this description?
Hi! Do you recommend a scanner that can scan well images that are no directly touching the glass of the scanner? Like in sketchbooks with spirals. Or all of the scanner will scan those places blurry?
+dianateabag It really depends on what you're scanning. if you scan a lot of books, spiral sketchbooks then it makes more sense to get scanners that are based on the CCD technology. This scanner uses the CIS, Contact Image Sensor.

Hi. Close EPSON scanner app and try again with macos app. Its same with HP scanner, using scanner app(from printers settings)
Any idea what I'm doing wrong or how to fix it
You have to adjust the scanning/cropping area with the driver software
the software disc included with Epson v39 is supported for Windows 10 or not??
Works with Win 10
Got one for cheap from Carousell. Doesn't have the Installation CD though. When use the scan/copy functions - Can I use other program such as Paint or Adobe/Nitro PDF instead of it auto-prompts opens the Photoshop app?
Depends on whether there is scanning driver built into those graphic software
Nice review! Thanks for the comparison!
Great review! Thank you! I saved your amazon link for the scanner if I end up getting this one! :)
Thanks 😁
Does we need anything extra like (cartridges for printer)..?
No
Great review. I'm in the market for a new scanner because my Epson Perfection 1640SU I got in 2004 lamp is dying :(
I'm going to get the Epson v39.
Thanks for detailed explanation 😊
Can you please advise if one can scan & send it directly to someone via email?
You can
hello, excuse me, would you know how to put 48 bits? I enter professional mode but at most, it gives me the option of 24 bits, do you know how I can put 48 bits?
You need to save as TIFF format. Or check the driver settings. Search online for the scanner help manual
Would you recommend it to scan full books?
No because scan will be blur for pages near the spine where the paper lift off the glass.
@@teohyc What scanner would you recommend for scanning full books ?
@@slugware Maybe get CCD-type scanners where the paper surface does not need to be in contact with the scanning glass surface. Because when scanning books, the paper near the spine will curve away and is not in contact with the glass, and that scanned area will be blur with CIS-type scanners.
@@teohontech7141 Thank you for your help! Appreciate it!
Does the scanner need to have software installed before it will power on? I bought a used one at a thrift shop and used a cell phone usb charge cable and it looks to have no power. So wondering does it have to have software before being able to power up?
It will have power once connected. But whether you can scan will depend on the software you have
Can we scan the hard copies, hand written matter, and multiple sheets at a time?
Only one sheet at a time. If you want to scan documents, multiple sheets, it's best to get a scanner that can scan multiple sheets. This is an art/photo scanner.
did it come with a USB cable? if so how long was the cable?
Cable is about 1m
is support media handling Document size to up Legal/F4 paper size???
+Robianto Djmusa Not sure what is that size. But this scanner handles up to A4 size, which is 29.7 by 21 inches, or 8.25 by 11 inches.
Thanks for the review - order today ^^
Cool
Thanks. I I doubt to buy this scanner or Canon Canoscan Lide 220. I will buy canon scanner because I prefer the software. Thanks for making this video! I have been very useful to me.
Thanks :-)
thanks for the review! So useful for artists !
Hi Teoh, Wich it is better for watercolor Canon or Epson ?
+Ela rincon They are very similar. I prefer Canon.
So fine it is
Epson perfection or Canon Canoscan 400v ?
I’d like to see you scan a page of text or various documents, not just a piece of artwork, thanks.
Text scans definitely no problem. Actually for text scans, any of those 3-in-1 scanner-printer-fax machine also can do
Thanks for the review, really helped me out there, cheers!
do u recommend it for illustation and manuscripts??
Yah. It's good
is it working on legal paper?
You have to enter the higher resolution yourself. If you computer is not powerful enough, or does not have enough RAM, it will not scan
Have a nice day!
which is better epson v39 or Canon canoscan lide 300/400?
They have same scan quality. I prefer Canon software.
@@teohyc thanks
Whether this scanner will support Legal Size scanning?
Maximum scanning size is 29.7 x 21cm
Can scan long bond paper? Or short bond paper only?
As long as the paper is flat it can be scanned.
Hi just wanted to ask for your opinion on a scanner that you would recommend scanning drawing artworks before I try and decide to pick myself? Any help would be very appreciated
Either this or the Canon Lide
@@teohyc Ok thank you will check both scanners out
You said I think that you can not use any other software other than what comes with Epson, yes you can,I have an older cannon scanner that only works up to XP ,but this old scanner will work on Linux. I think the new scanner will also work on Linux.
I meant that the Epson has to use its own driver software.
Helpful Teoh. Would you also do a video or a description of how to scan a document with multiple pages? Does it all go into 1 pdf?
Is it possible to scan film negatives with the epson v39?
Not with this model. There are models with film scanning feature
Is there anyway that I can scan several pages in one file (PDF) instead of scanning one page at a time, thanks. With Canon I don't have any problem.
I'm not sure you can do that with the Epson. Never tried before.
Teoh Yi Chie , thanks I was able to figure it out after reading the user guide.
Actually use the PDF button and did the job, in case someone asked you about it
Is it okay to scan Polaroid pictures?
Should work alright
Helped me a lot, thank you!
Hi what if my laptop dont have disc slot, any other way i can download the software?
You can download the driver from their website
I am here five years later looking at reviews for a photo scanner for my little sister to help me make a company logo for myself wth going on gotta super my man some love
this video was helpful, thank you. :D
I loved your art btw. :3
It should work with MacOS Catalina.
There's no power button for the scanners. The scanners don't use much power anyway.
Hi! What is the best software to scan photos?
Hello Teoh,
I am looking for a new scanner, do you know of any who don't have the issues with the buckling of the paper?
Also, do you know if the Canon one can scan with Scaling? thx :)
Scanners that use CIS (Contact Image Sensor) will have problem with buckled paper, unless you press down the paper hard. I'm not sure what you mean by scaling. All scanners can scan at rather high resolution, so by default, they already have scaling.
the canon lide 400 was unavailable when i looked here. this scanner is the one i bought. thanks for reviewing even though its long ago. lol
(EDIT)
also, is the software of epson is still good nowadays? i bought it already because the canoscan wasnt available in the stores here today :(
Scanning documents to editable pdf what setting is needed
In Auto scanning mode or home or office
Documents are editable
what budget printer to use for artists do u recommend?
I don't have any experience with printers. Really depends on the quality you're looking at. There are many reviews on Amazon. I'll personally check out Canon or Epson printers.
thanku
What do you call it when a scanner cannot focus unless the item is 100% flat on the glas surface (3:50)? I used to scan the inside of CD jewel cases for my homepage on my old scanner with absolutely no problems focusing in the depths of the CD case. What should I look for when buying a new scanner? Or is it just blind luck / bad luck? If you know. Thank you very much in advance.
+jwenneberg Do a search for "cis vs ccd scanners"
Thank you very much for your very fast reply!! I am now much clever :-D CCD should be the type of scanner I am looking for then. Thanks again.
hi! would you make a comparison scan with the canon lide 220 and epson v39 but with the max dpi and 48-bit color setting in RAW or TIFF format?
very helpful review btw.
+Maggy Frog Scanning at the maximum resolution without enough RAM will possibly crash your computer. I doubt many artists will scan at resolution above 600dpi. And even at that resolution, the file size is already incredibly huge.
thanks for replying :)
i'm actually going to get either the canon 220 or the epson v39. currently i have hp deskjet office printer/scanner but it's meant for just documents and in my test scans for colored pencil drawings, the highest resolution i can get is 1200x1200 at 24-bit and i'm still not satisfied even when i save the scan as tif or raw. my main problem is not really the resolution or insufficient RAM but the color depth of 24-bit since the color depth dictates how accurate the colors are scanned.
so even if i process my scans in PS, they are still initially in 24-bit and i can't for the life of me get back the lost color nuances from the drawings i worked on for hours and hours even if i change the setting to higher than 24-bit in PS.
edit:
also, i compared the jpeg image to the tiff one and as far as the colors go, they are identical LOL. again, this is because of the 24-bit max depth. jpegs are actually only 24-bit and the RAW or TIFF format are meant for higher than 24 but it's pointless that the hp scanner i have allows me to save as RAW or TIFF at basic color depth.
How big can this scanner copy up to.
+gundown26 A4
Ah I see I'm trying to go for a cheap but decent portable scanner that can scan up to 11x16 paper.
Thank you for the answer!!
That saturation is concerning. The adjusting sounds really annoying too...
Is it edit before save as PDF?
Thank you for the review!
here's one thing I want to ask you..
I've read amazon reviews and lots of people say those scanners(canon lide220 and epson 39)might not work properly with Mac, because of the drivers designed for Mac are not perfect.
Do you have any opinion about this?
+Hee eun Lee I've no problems with their drivers. These are new scanners so the companies always update their drivers to support the latest OS.
+Teoh Yi Chie that's great! thank you for comment!
