The thing with Makima is there is an underlying question:
"To what degree is Makima a slave to her own nature?"
As a devil, they may all inherently be evil to some degree. Barring a few notable examples, they all seem to not care that much about humans, especially in the grand scheme of things. Makima, and by extension Nayuta (her reincarnation), seem to have some caring aspects about them.
When she tells Kishibe her plan is to make a safer world by eliminating Death, Famine, and War, the inverse is true. What if she was telling the TRUTH? That completely redefines her character.
Immediately following Makima's defeat, Kishibe asks Denji to take care of Nayuta. Saying that, "If the government gets her, she may end up exactly as Makima." Add into the fact we don't know how old the Control Devil was in it's Makima incarnation, but on two separate occasions she refers to her government overseers as scary (train scene), or people necessary evils like her have to answer to (the yakuza leader scene).
Many people think it's highly likely she was raised by the government, both on account of Kishibe's wording and the fact she clearly feels like she has to be careful around the Japanese goverment.
Indirect evidence to this is how Nayuta is almost a completely different character. Yes, she still mind controls some of her classmates, there is the devil nature, but she isn't orchestrating Machiavellian-tier plans like Makima was. Why? Because she isn't being raised to be a tool by a power-hungry entity like the government. She is being raised in a seemingly entirely loving relationship by Denji.
TLDR, Nature vs. nuture is a question inherently central to Makima's/Nayuta's character. Fujimoto cooks.

    • @CharlieApples
      @CharlieApples 7 місяців тому +102

I think Makima is ultimately like a dog chasing a car; when and if she ever gets what she wants, which is total control over everyone in the world, she wouldn’t really know what to do with it. While she finds humans’ infatuation with her useful, she understands that they only like her because they are being controlled by her, and wouldn’t care at all if it weren’t for that. And so her deepest subconscious desire to be loved as an equal is, in her mind, impossible.
So she plans to do what an all-powerful human would do, which is try and create a new world order. And much like an egomaniacal human, the irony of her having to enslave all of humanity and murder millions of innocent people to supposedly benefit them is completely lost on her.

Before their final battle, Denji asks Makima if bad movies will still exist in the new world she intends to create, and she responds by saying the world would be better off without them. While fans have their own interpretation of the real meaning behind this conversation, it’s still a great indicator of how far Makima is willing to abuse Pochita’s power. While most people go out their way to avoid watching bad movies, they’re ultimately harmless in the grand scale of life’s problems. Makima saying she would erase them shows she wouldn’t stop until even the smallest imperfection is removed from her idea of humanity. It really would’ve been the worst kind of peace.

The interesting similarity between chainsaw man and jujutsu kaisen is that the evil monsters are solely created by humans in one show their created by our fears but in the other they are created by all our negative emotions which makes you think what is more interesting devils or curses since the other half is born from much more in negative emotions than just fear

Fyi, Makima is not young, and the government raising makima was never said in the manga. Kishibe told Denji that the government would turn Nayuta into something similar to makima (a heartless control monster) and not that the government raised Makima.
Makima has existed for a long long time - long enough to witness and participate in the War against Chainsaw Man in hell, where all the 4 horsemen fought up against Pochita.
The battle against Pochita vs the Four Hoursmen happened years ago. Its mentioned alot, but an example is in chapter 118 which supports this claim this claim: Yoru didn't recognize Fami when she first saw her since *she didn't see her in so long.*
Here's the direct quote I'm referring to: "I hadn't seen her in so long that I didn't recognize her."
Note that how a smart Devil is raised is still important, and nayuta is a great example, but that doesn't apply to Makima since she's pretty old and wasn't raised by humans.

As the only reason it even appeared during the Terror attack in America, was because it was already defeated in Hell.
All the powerful or more powerful fears that arent Primal Devils, such as the Gun Devil dont appear all the time due to their power.
Also, then fact that Pochita and Primal Devils can travel across Hell in under a few minutes is insane, as there are numerous doors. Yet one door like the door leading to the human realm, can hold universe-sized spaces.
So its basically a multiverse onto itself, implying Devils are an eldritch horror that specialized in hunting humans and that are bound to concepts and empowered by them.
Even christianity is a big deal and Horsemen of the Apocalpyse and the Angels like Power and Princi (that are reference to castes of Angels like Principality and the Powers) exist.

Great video as always, Makima has been one of my favorite villains from the newer Shounen Mangas because she is a truly multilayered character with many different aspects or interpretations of her that I don't think Shounen has truly explored like it does in Chainsaw Men.
One part of her character is how she is a god figure as well. It's no surprise with the horsemen (or horsewomen) sisterhood she's in that she has connections to the Bible. Still, as another video on this site by Hiding in Public has found, she has several parallels to the God of the Old Testament in old Jewish beliefs, especially in that scene where all the fiends and hybrids bow to her, similar to the classes of angles bowing to God. It also seems with her being the control devil, she will control the world to a better place much like a god would, but I would argue that there is a much more selfish part of her plan that doesn't involve her survival or domination over the world.
One of Hiding in Public's comparisons with Makima to the Old Testment God (keep in mind, neither him nor I are religious scholars and it's been a while since I watched his video) gives an exciting interpretation, that the Old Testement God is lonely so he wanted a connection to his subjects, being human. I believe at some level Makima may truly want love, or an equal relationship of some sort, with Pochita given how she keeps stating that she's a fan of him. However, she is so twisted and inhuman that she can't understand love despite being about to imitate it, leading to her only being able to understand it in the form of control, or being above another like a god, instead of being a pair, an equal, like a real relationship.
This even ties into how at the end of part 1 and in part 2, Denji decided to treat Nayuta well since he wanted to show what true love is. By being a great bigger brother to Nayuta, he completes his character arc for part 1 to become like his mentor (Aki) and grow up from a lack of desire or only being hedonistic for desire, to finally control himself to take responsibility for Nayuta. He does all of this because he doesn't want another control devil to become like Makima, Denji doesn't want another Makima and he doesn't believe that a control devil is naturally going to be like her, and he wants to show what true love is. It's a midway between Makima's control and early Denji's Hedonism, it's an equal relationship of respect and love, and we do eventually see that Nayuta was able to understand and show human emotion and not Makima's psychopathy. Makima could never understand what love is, because she never puts someone at an equal level as her, she's always seen herself as higher than others never equal so try as she may, she could only imitate love from the view of God to his subjects, not as a human to another human, which ended up being her undoing.

If the reincarnation has no connection whatsoever to the devil that preceded it, why would they be so fearful of the Chainsaw devil specifically?
I mean, anything with enough power under the hood can potentially take out a devil, but the Chainsaw devil eating them ends the reincarnation cycle. If the devils had no connection, they'd have no reason to fear Chainsaw more than any other thing that kills devils.

From Cell, you can talk about his personality in 3 distinct phases, 1st, 2nd, and perfect, since all his forms have pretty different looks, actions taken, and personalities. From here, you talk about the world tournament, his actions taken, and then use that to talk about his overall superiority complex before tying that into his defeat from Gohan and how both characters are thematically intertwined, talk about Cell's death, maybe mention what he gets up to in the afterlife, recap, video done. Is it a lot? Not really, but there's enough to probably hit that 10 minute mark. Although, maybe a "Analyzing Evil: Dragon Ball's Cell Saga" would be more efficient. Dunno

Makima's face-blindness is basically the same as me exclusively referring to all people I don't know, who I get matched with on a game as "teammate," though, I do it because I find it funny to just call them all teammate. That being said, it did make me laugh when VE said (paraphrased), "she probably remembers them as x number instead of their name" because that's basically how I remember any teammate on a game, who isn't a personal friend lmao.
Then it made me think, "so literally everyone is teammate to Makima... That's kinda based."

  • @We_see_all

[READ!] Btw, It's a misconception that a Devils are born from fear and that they won't exist anymore when its name isn’t feared. To explain this, let's start all the ways from the top:
Devils are given names ("born") based on existing concepts [Many chapters explain this, but its first explained in chapter 6, page 6. Makima states in this chapter: "All Devils are born with a name. The more that name is feared, the more powerful the devil itself."
    This tells us that:
When, for example, the concept Tomatoes exists, then the Tomato Devil will be born. If there're cars, then the car devil will exist.
Note that concepts can also be mental constructs or abstract ideas. That's why the zombie devil can exist or the ghost devil, even though ghosts and zombies aren't real things in real life.
(Off topic: Also, our perception of concepts has a bit of an influence on their appearance and power, but thats a discussion for another time.)
All fear does is determine how weak or strong a devil is. So the more a specific concept/name is feared, the stronger that Devil becomes. (fear doesn't give birth to them it just strengthens them, and the lack of fear/no fear at all doesnt kills them either. It instead weakens them a considerable amount).
So if a specific concept isn't feared *at all*, then the Devil that is associated with that concept will just be super weak, but as long as the concept tied to that devil exists, then they won't be erased.
So basically, what I'm trying to say is that concepts determine whether or not a devil exists-It's not fear that dictates this. As an example, if cars aren't feared at all, then the Car Devil can still exist since the concept cars still exist.
Anyways, the only way a devil can truly 'die' and escape the cycle of death and rebirth between hell/earth is by being eaten by Pochita since he erases the very concept that is associated with that devil. So if he eats the Car Devil, then the concept cars are erased from the past and present, which in turn erases/kills the Car Devil (since the concept of cars no longer exists). That is why Pochita is so highly valued by every devil, especially by the 4 horsemen and primal devils.

Thats what makes the darkness devil so scary. It's never died.

@@Kongongongg Oh, sorry. I forgot the average CSM fan doesn't have reading comprehension so let me break it down for you mkay?
In Chapter 2, Makima mentions to Denji that her nose is pretty good that she can smell Pochita inside of Denji. She never actually remembered Denji, other than the smell of Pochita.
In Chapter 84, Makima mentions that she is contracted with the Prime Minister that any "attack" directed at her will be redirected to a random Japanese citizen as an illness or accident. Denji learns about this in the final fight.
During the fight with the Weapons and Makima in Chapter 87 and 88, Pochita threw his heart when he was launched into space and regenerated from there. Denji has a vague memory of the fight, even though Pochita did the fighting.
In Chapter 91, Denji made a contract with Power to have her blood.
In Chapter 96, Denji made use of all the things above.
      - Gambled that Makima only "smelled" Pochita and never cared about Denji.
      - Used the Pochita heart technique to have Pochita fight Makima while Denji is hiding from her.
      - Used Power's blood to make the "Power Chainsaw" to attack Makima.
      - Power's blood makes her unable to regenerate as she is still attacking inside of her. This also made it possible to chop her up into pieces.
      - Eating her doesn't count as an "attack" as Denji sees it as a form of "love".
Now tell me. Where can I insert the "author killed her via making her dumb and powerless"?

    • @Kongongongg
      @Kongongongg 6 місяців тому

@@janreiafrica hello, amazingly you made every single argument that will work against Denji here. Let’s start, shall we?
      1. Smell. You are correct. Makima doesn’t even know scent of Denji and only see Pochita all the time.
And she doesn’t even need to care about Denji to stop him.
Remember fight at graveyard? Makima believed that she was fighting Denji right?
But this was actually Pochita. Denji was hiding.
So tell me why didn’t Makima spot the difference between smell of small, heart shaped Pochita and big, human like Pochita?
If I remember correctly Makima was a big fan of CSM. So, why didn’t she notice Pochita’s BIG smell exactly?
No Denji or his scent needed. Only difference between smell of small and big Pochita.
      2. Excellent point about Pochita throwing his own heart to Earth. Do you know who else not only saw this trick but also COMMENTED about this? Oh right. Makima. She was aware of such ability.
      3. Another great point about Power blood! Only problem. Power did fought Makima and even used same blood against her…guess what? Didn’t do anything against regeneration of Makima.
And tell why didn’t Makima just teleported via rats to half-destroyed Power and Pochita? Why didn’t Makima just repeat Reze scene?
I know you how more arguments but let’s just stop here and after your answers return to these

[Read 2]: I might have misheard, but I just wanted to share that Pochita doesn't just erase the "fear" of the concept, but his ability also erases the concept related to the devil and not just the "memory." Let me explain:
A devil is directly correlated to its concept (they are born from concepts). So, when Chainsaw man erases a devil, then the concept itself will be erased, which would, in turn, erase the devil and everyone's memory of that specific concept.
So, when CSM erases concepts, it doesn't just erase everyone's memory of that concept, but it also rewrites reality itself, which alters the past, present, and future (Makimas words in Chapter 84). As an example, when CSM erased the "sixth sense all humans used to have," everyone didn't just forget that they had a sixth sense. It literally just rewrites reality to where humans never had this sixth sense in the first place. (Also, one thing. Focus on how Makima describes this: "sixth sense all humans used to have" This means that humans used to have sixth sense, but bcs Pochita ate the sixth sense Devil, he consequently made it so that no one has sixth sense. The concept of sixth sense was therefore erased, and not just the memories.) Or WW2 and Nazis as an example. It didn't just make everyone forget about the war/nazis, but it also led to the erasure of these two event, which led to consequences like Russia never being created and instead USSR still thriving as a nation (soviet are mentioned in bomb girl arc and in chapter 73, page 11).
The point is that it doesn't just erase people's memory:
    - "Four possible conclusions other than death at the end of a living beings lifespan." Pochita ate 4 devils that were conclusions other than death at the end of a living beings lifespan and erased these concepts. So when a person is at the end of their lifespan, the only thing that will happen to them Is death and not the other four conclusions since they already got erased.
    - "The light of a particular star that would break childrens minds." The existence of this concept (the sun that breaks children's minds) created a devil related to this specific sun. The more this sun was feared, the stronger that devil became. When Pochita ate this devil, it erased the concept related to that devil, which was that dangerous sun.
    - Another example is when Makima wanted to create "the worst kind of peace" by using Pochitas' concept erasure to erase devils - Devils like the Death devil. This will naturally erase the concept of death, and when the concept Death is erased by Pochita, then it will lead to no one being able to die.
If your wondering what would happen if the concept of death is erased then I'll share my thoughts: As you can imagine, erasing Death would result in unimaginable consequences since changes in the past would naturally affect the present and future as well: this opens up questions like "what would happen to Aki if the concept Death were to be erased from the past and present? Would he be alive again?" Well, Aki would unfortunately cease to exist since there's a high likelihood that he might never be born by his parent when the past is changed so much. You could even go as far as to say that his whole ancestry tree would die out. And this doesn't just apply to Aki: trillion of humans would technically be erased from the 'old' reality, but then in this new rewritten reality where Death doesn't exist - every organism would be completely new and immortal.
What happens afterward is up to our imagination to determine, but logically speaking, evolution would take a completely different path or even outright stop (they'd be new creatures. Also, the animals we know today would most likely never exist, or they might be altered. Humans aren't excluded from this process, and I doubt they'd be called humans due to them no longer resembling 'humans'). Our current languages and cultures would most likely be lost. Earth would be overpopulated since everything now just reproduces whilst no one dies. Diseases would spread super rapidly, and everyone's body would eventually begin to rot (depends on how effective the regeneration is). It'd basically be like hell 2.0.
Whats interesting is that one of the many BIG mysterious about Pochitas concept-erasure ability now, is discussed in chapter 87: Makima states that when Pochita ate the 'Hybrid' devil, only the memories of this concept was erased, but the concept itself miraculously wasn't erased. She then says this important quote right after: "THEY ARE THE SOLE EXCEPTION" - Makima. She continues on to say that the concept of 'Hybrids was the ONLY concept to not be erased by Pochita, while only the memories of this concept were erased. So, basically, everyones memories of 'hybrids' were erased, but Pochitas ability didn't rewrite reality completely to where 'Hybrids' never existed. That's why hybrids, like the Katana hybrid and Bomb hybrid, can still be made and exist, unlike something like the "sixth sense of humanity" since they are now already erased and not just forgotten.
Since the hybrids were the sole exception, then, if Death devil was eaten, it won't be as lucky, bcs everyones memories about death will be erased and reality will be altered to where everyone never died.
Pochita erasing concepts has unimaginable consequences. But luckily, Pochita is extremely careful and doesn't thoughtlessly erase concepts. He, for example, shows this in the Makima vs Pochita battle, where he doesn't erase an important concept such as control and instead kills her 26 times instead. Makima, being a fan of him and who wishes to be erased, naturally gets mad at this.
But yeah, I hope that you understand now that Pochita erases the concepts of the devils he eats, which in turn retcons everyone's memories of this concept.
Btw, I just wanted to add that the only beings that can 'remember' what concepts Pochita erased are: Pochita himself, The 4 horseman, and most likely the Primal Devils. These limited devils basically remember the old reality that was rewritten into the new reality that they are in, which is pretty insane if you think too deeply about it.

I never considered the concept of control to be directly scary to me, but to see Makima's weilding of everything that she gets a hold of and to have the concept be contextualized in her characterization made me realize how terrifying control is
Losing your autonomy is scary in and off itself, but for it to be given to someone/something else that uses you as a tool is deeply terrifying and the fucked up thing about it is, I may be able to not encounter or ignore many things that may scare me, but I am controlled just as everyone else is by others and by concepts I may or may not grasp. I cannot escape this fact, it's an inherently terrifying part of existince that no one can challenge
