10 years ago Mythbusters was one of the most popular science-based shows in the world and the longest-running show on Discovery. Fans loved watching the crews put popular urban legends and myths to the test on a regular basis. Yet, despite the popularity of the show, in 2015, Mythbusters announced that they only had one season left of the show. While this was rather surprising for casual watchers, enthusiasts were already aware of some of the background issues behind the show. Shortly before the show got canceled, Mythbusters got rid of the B crew. Also, the show was starting to focus more on cinematic explosions and theatrics instead of the myths themselves. All of these factors had caused viewership to slowly decline over the years to the point where the crew would have to accept lower compensation. Given that the show had already been running for over a decade at this point, the crew decided to call it a day while things were still good instead of milking the show till the very last second. This video explains what happened to Mythbusters and why Mythbusters got canceled despite its popularity.

Mythbusters was so successful because it was one of those rare shows that managed to 'capture lightning in a bottle' so to speak. It was the right show at the right time with a cast that had fantastic on-screen chemistry. Regardless of their off-screen relationships, they all worked together very well in front of the camera. They all managed to be very entertaining without being fake or stupid, which is something very hard for shows like this to accomplish.

My Lowly Opinion: The biggest problem with being able to see Mythbusters was that it was mired to Discovery Channel, which didn't make the leap to streaming until recently. To make matters worse, Discovery has gone out of their way to distance themselves from actual science in favor of click-baity nonsense like big foot and river monsters and ancient aliens, to name just a few. Sadly, Mythbusters was a casualty of the cable media era dying out as streaming rose in popularity. Those who wanted to watch it couldn't (because the releases on Amazon Instant Video were few and far between), and those remaining on cable didn't care for science as much as theatrics.

Absolutely. I mean you can especially see the conflict in the earlier seasons. They never seemed to hate each other, but they 2 were so completely different that the 2 really were never going to share enough in common to form a friendship. Especially with how the People at discovery would put the 2 against each other in build offs and other situations that put them in direct competition with each other.
I remember one of the early seasons they did a behind the seasons and Jamie outright said that the aspect bothered him and I don't blame them. He was always a no nonsense skilled engineer who liked to run his shop in an organized and efficient manor while literally every other member of the cast were what is referred to in the industry as shop tornados and would leave tools out creating messes and overall pulling pranks on each other. Which of course makes for good TV and does happen in a lot of shops, but not the environment that I would enjoy working in nor did it seem that Jamie liked.
The cohesion simply was not there and over 14 years all of that would wear on anyone.

Call me a boomer but, It's only been these last 8 years did kids say "I wanna be a famous UA-camr" or a Tiktok star when asked what they want to be when they grow up. Back in 2010? UA-cam was a hobby. No one saw it as a career path. Back then, 1mil subs was a big deal, not many people could achieve that. Now? 1 million is far more common. Yet so many people still can't make it as a big UA-camr. Being a famous UA-camr is the modern day "I wanna be the next Metallica". Might I remind you, clout chasing and "muh social media followers" is only a recent thing. Doing stupid shit like tidepod challenges and whatever dumb trendy shit is barely considered a career and quite frankly, most people don't give a shit about your social media following. What I really loved about this show as a scientist myself was how it was teaching its viewers the procedure of formulating research questions, doing background research, formulating the hypothesis, testing the hypothesis and discussing the results. This is exactly the essence of how scientists work. Each episode was structured like a science paper in itself, only made fun and entertaining to keep the audience engaged.
At the same time, the show was an excellent example of interdisciplinary attitude to problem-solving, where engineers often asked anthropologists and ethnographers to provide additional context about certain urban legends. Such a collaboration between natural sciences and humanities is very rare and highly appreciated.

Usually Adam and Jamie are introduced together in the opening, with Tori, Grant and Kari listed as “and joining them.” I can remember one episode where they listed all five members in the intro as full hosts, but I guess the producers didn’t like that, and they went back to their second tier listings soon after.

Mythbusters was one of those shows that my daughter and I would watch together as she grew up. The show ran for pretty much the entirety of her childhood. As a result, she became very interested in subjects like math & science. She has recently graduated college with a BS in biology and is now pursuing her master's degree with intentions of continuing beyond that. I'm sure Adam and Jamie would be proud to know how much their influence played a part in sparking her imagination and career goals.

I love making references to the show to my students, and the crazy thing is many of them have actually heard and even seen Mythbusters! They would have all been toddlers when the show ended, yet several of them are familiar with it. People who stayed glued those final years were those who already probably felt they had a large time investment. I'd definitely get tired of working on the same show over ten years without a huge pay raise; may as well call it the explosion show and there are hundreds of those just wrecking things. Mythbusters was one of they very few worthwhile things to watch imo during the period of years it aired.

I'm in my mid 40's, and I always hated the sciences growing up, but stumbling onto Mythbusters changed all that. I never knew science could be fun, they proved me wrong in the most positive of ways. Okay, so I don't work in sciences today, but I have a massive love for it, and it all started with the two of them, back before the trio team joined them.
I also loved that you had the young team in Tory, Grant and Kari doing the more "young" and "rebellious" myths (hope you get what I mean by that), and having the more "mature" guys doing the more serious myths. It didn't make sense before the second team become a regular feature to have Jamie and Adam doing full on pop culture stuff, it often felt a bit, strange. That's why I really felt the show pop off when the second team became regulars, cause the myths they were testing usually fit the personalities of the people testing them.
No matter how you look at it, I think Mythbusters has done something amazing, something that will only benefit the technology of the future. Just like the Star Trek cause so many people to start dreaming, and it berthed so many future aerospace engineers, engineers of all kinds really, scientists. Basically, it peaked to many peoples curiosity causing them to choose a scientific background. I do genuinely believe Mythbusters has done the same, and will continue to do in the foreseeable future. There is a reason why there are science teachers who utilize Mythbusters and integrate some of what they have done in the shows into their classes. Cause they found a way to make science fun!
I so wish they would have been around when I was a kid in school, I might have paid a lot more attention in my science classes and gotten higher grades. ;-)

Pretty much from the beginning of mythbusters there was obvious friction even with what made it to air. The build team were probably what kept mythbusters going for as long as it did. They had the personalities and friendships that just shined through. I worked with someone who in my mind was very like Jamie. But when you watch an entire series of a show over a few months, you see how it changes. It had become an explosion factory, and lost some of it's original magic, so it was time to go out while it was still good, as you say. I could tell that Kari, Grant and Tory were like The Three Amigos, and Adam and Jamie had to work together because their contract said so. It seemed like Adam's enthusiastic exuberance somehow grated on Jamie's nerves. He seemed like someone who finds it hard to laugh. Oh well! Very sad to hear about Grant's tragic death :-(.

In 2018 or 2019 Adam explained what happened to the build team: when he and Jamie first started the show they were under 10 year contracts and while the show continued to grow in popularity, their pay never did.
When their contracts were up the show was still at its height of popularity and so they signed on for 5 more years for much more money.
Then the shows ratings started to decline, which meant less advertiser revenue coming in. He said Discovery approached him and Jamie about taking a pay cut, but they refused... so in order to cut the shows budget they got rid of the build team.
(This might be coming from the clips in this video with Adam on the stage talking to the audience about the show)

I've worked with people where I could say they seemed like an OK person, even likable, but just for one reason or another I'd never say we were friends, just colleagues and they are probably not somebody I would ever go out with for drinks or dinner unless it was some kind of company function... that either its not something they'd ask (Hey, you wanna go for drinks after work?) or that I would either.
