Great to see you for the first time this evening with Voja and Kits (and to have my question discussed - Gallery 3, etc. ). My question for you - where or what is the setting for being able to so easily make a “to do note” by dragging down from the top bar while in an app? 7:12 in your video. I don’t seem to be able to add a note list function n my control center which I can access by swiping down from the top of my Note Air 2. Thanks if you can answer this for me!
Hey@@mscargill1, Welcome! I have Todoist installed and it adds that option. I think this is common practice for Android apps, so try installing your todo list of choice and see if it adds it as a configurable option. If not, Todoist will definitely work.
Hi Mr.Boswell! I was surprized by the review you gave it and I have been looking more into the Boox Tablet. I was wondering if you think this would be a good investment for taking notes in college, or if there was a tablet for note taking that you do recommend over this one.
Thank you for this video! I'm a 42 year old with low vision returning to school in the fall to complete my B.A. I own a great Lenovo laptop, but I'm always looking for the best options when it comes to reading books/textbooks and taking notes while also being able to enlarge the text so I can comfirtably read it. Assuming I'm a Google and Kindle user, would you say this is my best bet?
Brandon - It took almost a year, but I finally decided on the Onyx Boox Note Air 2 Plus, and I am absolutely loving it. Your review and response were major factors. Thanks!
Great review! I've been researching all 3 devices you mentioned and although the feel of the Remarkable is the most polished, not having back-light, ebooks, easy annotations to PDFs, and synching to One Note or Google without paying the Remarkable cloud subscription were all factor that made the Remarkable a terrible option for me. It's really amazing that back-light and free Wi-Fi synchronization is not included.
Hi @@BrandonKBoswell , I noticed that you mentioned in the video (~8:30) that sync to Google Drive is not automatic and one needs to manually upload the files to Google Drive. Is it the same in reMarkable 2 as well? I am looking for an e-ink device that can automatically sync my handwritten notes to Google Drive so that I can read them on other devices. Would you mind sharing any options that are capable of auto-sync?
I feel like you are a UA-camr version of myself...from a lefty, to wanting a kindle reader and note taking device in one, to using Obsidian and Todoist. Great review :D Just picked up the Air2 Plus and really excited to reduce the clutter around my desk with all the notebooks and such.
Nice video Brandon! I received my NA2P around the same day as you, and my experience has been similar. Same delights & frustrations. For me, it's a great device, a joy for note-taking and recording ideas.
Thanks for covering this. Very helpful. We are planning to buy some type of higher-end e-ink device, because they're finally really becoming more useful and not just an expensive toy device.
Re: Pen Magnet. The magnet holds quite a bit better when the tip is pointed to the bottom when oriented for a right hander (wide border on the left). For the orientation you prefer, try pointing the pen up. I probably has something to do with polarity.
Agreed. Honestly, I think the magnets are strong enough, I just don’t understand why they rounded off that edge. Because of that design decision it’s not possible for it get a truly sturdy connection
Great review of the Boox Note Air 2 Plus! I was trying to decide between the Remarkable 2, Kindle Scribe and Boox Note Air 2, and your review was a major factor in my ordering the Boox Note Air 2.
I recently lost my very beloved Onyx Poke 3 reader and want to replace it with something I can also use for journalling. This was a very helpful review. Thank you.
I've been using BOOX Nova 3. It's functional but I have concerns regarding the quality of components used. The battery died after 2 years despite the device being used only for about 2 hours a day (and turned off after each use) Customers also report issues with a mainboard. The repair cost is steep ($150 mainboard, $125 new screen) + you also have to pay for 2 way shipping which is about $50 ( so the total cost 50-70% of new device). I'm afraid that BOOX e-readers aren't built to last...
Hey Brandon, I also have similar requirements, but I went with the reMarkable 2. I had a Boox device before that; I would always end up pressing the eraser button on the Boox pen, and much prefer the reMarkable's eraser at the top of the pen. Seeing some of the issues you had reminds of that device, though it wasn't as Air. The reMarkable is a much more polished experience. For my Kindle books, I have some software which converts them to epub format and then I just load them up through the reMarkable app. It's not as seamless as having native Kindle support, but it works well enough for me.
Nice review. I appreciate the comparisons you made. Especially to the iPad which I have and never liked writing on. I wondered about adding a screen protector and you addressed that topic well. Thanks again.

I was surprised that one of your strikes against the iPad was the “blue light at night”; iOS and iPadOS have Night Shift (Settings > Display & Brightness) that, when enabled, automatically shift the colours to warm tones at night.
Hi Brandon, thanks for the review. It has convinced me to buy the Boox Note Air 2 which arrived just a couple of weeks ago. Could you tell me how to have access to the beta reader (min 7:00 from the video). I could really use to being able to take notes on the device while reading (without closing the document screen). Thanks!
Just received my Supernote A6x and man...im in love. But I do agree with t being a problem having no backlight - makes it impossible to see anything on the screen in the dark which isn't that big of a problem for me.
Thank you for this very helpful video! I come from a similar standpoint and was tending to a boox device. I really hate reading on screen and I do not read any e-books for leisure, but I find that at University we get more and more provided with PDFs instead of prints and that a lot of literature is available in a digital format. I do have a convertible laptop, but beside the "getting shone at all the time" issue, it is also really tedious to pull that laptop out e.g. on a shorter (like 20 -30 minutes or so) traintrip. I thought a cheap e-book reader would be a good solution, but didn't like the lack of being able to take notes and also found that even the newer models with a pen function tend to not really have an option to export the annoted pdfs back, to have them available when I'm working on the PC and even worse, when the device might break down. I'm still a bit torn, sicce I could print a lot of pages instead of buying such a device and also still use my laptop beside that, but It was really great to see someone having this a little bit different approach to an e-reader. Most other reviews didn't really provide me with the insights I needed. (:
Just got the Air 2 plus. superb. excellent review that made my direction clear between this and remarkable 2. To have apps like Pocket and Deezer and note capability is awesome. Thank you for the review
I use both, but rarely together. It works okay, but my workflow is one where I am rarely writing in Obsidian from my Note Air 2 Plus. I usually write or consume my Obsidian notes from laptop.
Hey Brandon, thank you for the great video! By far the most complete and concise one I've seen. The only question I had was about One Note support. I've seen from other reviews that it's available, but I wondered if the sync was automatic? Thanks
Hey Jesus, I haven’t used OneNote on this device, but my understanding is that it uses the OneNote Android app. If you have ever used that it should be identical.
I wanted to write on my IPad 11’, but my problem with it is that it isn’t really comfortable writing on it except for the very middle of the pad where you can get your hand on the IPad. It left me wanting a separate writing device or wishing I had a 12.3 IPad.
Hi Brendon, I really love your video, and watching it makes me interested in buying Boox Note Air 2 plus. I am curious about the boox note air 2 plus if I can take notes by opening a kindle and a note app such as the one on iOS devices side by side for example?
Hi Brandon. Thank you for the quick and thorough video. I've had the original Note Air for quite a while. I've tried different pens to get that "scratchy" pencil on paper feel that you mentioned but so many of the styluses have the nib type that feels like a grease-pen on glass more than writing. Can you tell me which stylus with an eraser that you said you like to use instead of the one that came with NA2? Thank you, and I look forward to more Boox videos from you. I use mine every day for note taking and reading. I use the device offline and side load articles and sometimes books (from Calibre), connecting to the internet every couple weeks to update apps, Google Books and Kindle. Thank you!
@@BrandonKBoswell I saw your video soon after I added this question in the comments.. $54 is way too much for an 2 generations old replacement stylus. Wouldn't one without Bluetooth be just as good? I don't want to order something in the $15 range and end up with a cheapy knock-off from Amazon or even Ebay. When you say the white tip? That's one of the two types it comes with correct? A light and a dark. I also have an S7 tablet. It's nice to use the S Pen with my NoteAir and NovePro, but it can do unexpected things on my tablet. I use the NoteAir tremendously and really want to get the right stylus. Thank you!
@@tjinatl The Samsung pens are very confusing (especially for me as an iOS user). I'm not sure the differences between the S7 and S6 Lite pens. The one I'm recommending here doesn't have bluetooth or a battery (even though the Amazon listing shows that it does). For the white tip, yes I'm using the one that comes in the box, but not the one that comes pre-installed. Let me know if you have more questions!
@@BrandonKBoswell S Pens are Wacom EMR pens. Most of the S Pens aren't internally any different, though there are those with Bluetooth. To be clear, they do not need Bluetooth for writing, erasing (via button or end eraser), or hovering (on supported devices). The Bluetooth functionality on S Pen is powered using a supercapacitor. The only other with Bluetooth is BigMe, who use a battery. Neither support third-party devices as their Bluetooth functionality is not part of the Wacom spec.
thanks for the quick video. I cant stand my eye fatigue more. staring monitor all day long for studying or shopping, working like 24/7. and furthermore I recently started. IELTS study. bunch of letter in small space drive me crazy. thank u for your review!.
The killer feature I'm waiting for is being able to sync a Bluetooth keyboard to one of these devices. Talk about a great device to write your next novel on!
So after 2 years, do still highly recommend the Boox Note Air 2 Plus? Also, how is the experience of taking notes on books you read? You showed highlighted text in the video but how about writing? Thanks for this great video!
Thanks for the review, when you are reading a pdf, is it possible to select text from the pdf document and copy and paste it to your own notes document? is it possible to open google docs or spreadsheets? Thanks
Hey Brandon, thanks for making this video, it goes straight to the point! I have some questions regarding E-Ink device, especially Note Air 2 Plus. Could Note Air 2 Plus access the website? sometimes I might need to open the textbook on it? Does Note Air 2 Plus have infinite zoom? or if not, could it zoom in and zoom out extremely small? Could I access the Notes from Note Air 2 Plus on my laptop or other devices? My situation: I am using my laptop for everything, my assignment, my works, and schedule,... it is 2 in 1 laptop, so I can flip it and it becomes a tablet and I have been writing and taking note on it, but you know a laptop is irreplaceable for writing, it is a bit inconvenient sometimes. So I am thinking about getting one E-Ink device, but I saw iPad deal on Target, and bought it without thinking sufficiently deep, and after a few days, I found that I don't like my iPad. sincerely,
At 6:56 you mention you got into a reader beta to read from different sources. What beta is this for? And is it still in beta now (several months later), or has it been released?
Hi, I noticed since this video, you've made a lot of videos about the Remarkable.. which do you find you use more often and why? Would love an update comparison! Thanks! 😊
Great video! I am looking at getting one. Could you do a video on how far you can get without a boox sync account logged in? For security I cant be logged in or syncing, and would like to keep offline as much as possible. Been hearing that Boox forces you to log in (~assigning notes to your account not your device) or else your notes disappear.. With Boox's built in notes app atleast which seems most powerful vs a 3rd party app. Would love any info on that!
Hey Jade, I just started another profile and it looks like I can create notes just fine, if you were very concerned about it, you could always turn off the wifi. From everything I've read and used it seems like you want to be using the Boox Note app.
if you buy Nova launcher you can get to the stock android settings which have the core contrast settings, not sure if there are more ways to dial in your preferences
Saw this video and as an reader user i think the refresh everytime you scroll in reader is what kept me from buying. I search in discord and found some settings to fix this, and found out that your comment under it lol.
Dan and the Readwise team have talked about doing a page flip option, which would help a lot, but they have a ton on their plate so it will likely be awhile.
@@BrandonKBoswell Got it ! So do you still recommend using reader on boox? Is it a good choice? Got an kindle oasis 3 but the typing experience is really aweful. Hope that boox with google voice typing will help.
Hello, thanks for an informative video. I am thinking of buying note air soon. what are your thoughts on buying an android 10 device when android 11 is available in note air 2? Note air is currently offered on discount at good price so seems like a good option. Like if we ignore everything else, does a newer version of android on a device is able to justify a higher price?
Let me start by saying there are much more qualified people to comment on the differences between Android 10 and 11 (I'm an iPhone user), but I would say the bigger difference between the Note Air and the Note Air 2 is going to be the writing feel. The Note Air does not come with screen protector that makes it feel like you are writing on paper. If you are comfortable putting on your own screen protector, and you are getting a nice discount, I would say grab the Note Air. AFAIK they run the same versions of the Boox Apps.
Thanks for the video ! How's your experience with Obsidian on the device ? Also, very interested in how to read long form articles from the internet or newsletters. Can you annotate a blog post or newsletters you read ?
@@BrandonKBoswell awesome, thanks for sharing ! Wondering if you would be interested to make a video that explains how you use Readwise in your reading or daily workflow 😀
Brandon, nice review thanks. Re todo lists, noted your quick demo of writing a Todoist idea while reading. Is there an app youve seen (Todoist or not) that allows writing a todo with the pen and then, crucially, checking it off and it disappears and others move up? I.e. the simplest possible "digital" to do list but with writing on eink? Better would be a set of tabs across for separate lists. I borrowed my wife's remarkable and was shocked that it is only "paper" and so fiercely proud of that. I already have paper ;-) I havent tried any Android eink tablet but this one seems good for Kindle support also. Cheers!
@@BrandonKBoswell Google Keep has these functions. Can share a note with others (gift lists, grocery lists, etc) and are accessible from any browser and the android app.
For an eink device the note is good for writing and drawing. Lots of menu options for drawing and adding layers. Many templates compared to Scribe and Elipsa 2E. Also nice to read all my nook, kindle and kobo books in one place in eink. I love the thousands of free ebooks in the store. I use it to journal my thoughts and keep track of my bank account transactions. Also the Note and scribe stylus are interchangeable and work on both devices. I am not too happy with the reading experience. Page turning is a bit sluggish no matter which refresh mode you choose. I like how you can handwrite on all ebooks even nook BUT it converts writing to text unless its a free book from the Boox store ( Project Gutenberg I assume) then you can write on book. Word of warning, its hard to set up and figure out at first.
Hey! I've seen your video and wanted to know some more features about note 5 1. Does it change colors on the pen? 2. When I'm finished writing any of my work on the note 5 then is it possible to send the file to any of windows office365 in any format by words/excel etc...? 3. Same related to question number 2 is that is it possible to send pdf files to WhatsApp/telegram or any chat media from note 5? Please let me know these features 🙏
Very interesting. What I would like to understand is: 1) can I write on the pages of a book, no matter which file type, and find my writings on the book pages the next time I open it, as I would on a normal book? 2) And what about the Kinde Scribe, the other e-ink tablet, after the recent update: would something like that be possible, too? Thanks
The Boox reading app is good and supports this for PDFs and ePubs, but not Kindle Books as those use the Kindle App and the Kindle app doesn't allow for writing directly on the page (even on the Scribe). You instead add a "sticky note" like thing that shows as a Note icon and then you click on that to see the drawing.
Hi Brandon Thanks for video comparison. I wonder if possible to highlight and translate to other languages and keep safe a new vocabulary? 🤔 Also want to ask if you now is possible to use for music or write mysic? Rustem
Most of the tablets have templates for writing music. The translation I’m less sure about. I don’t think there is native handwriting to text + translate. Theoretically you could copy it to another app, but I don’t think the tablet has a clipboard.
@@BrandonKBoswell Hi Brandon I discovered on russian site that us possible and just one word but also the whole page and on top of that if you don't disconnect it will still translate(automatic translation)while you read...
Thanks so much for this helpful review. I’m still struggling to set up the Kindle app so that the text isn’t quite so grainy. In the loom you prepared for Jim, you mention a Regal refresh setting and say it was key to your experience. But I don’t seem to have the Regal refresh option. Is it gone now?
Hey James! It still appears to be there for me, but they have made some changes to the UI. Go to the eInkCenter and then choose the slider icon on the bottom toolbar. It's the second from the right for me. Then go to the refresh tab and it should be the second refresh mode.
@@BrandonKBoswell Thanks much for the reply! I’m seeing posts on Reddit saying the Regal refresh setting disappeared in the v. 3.3 update. Some are saying the setting will be back in v. 3.3.1. Fingers crossed.
Thank you for this! It was a very helpful overview that gave me a very good idea of whether the Boox is worth it or not. I have two questions, if anyone could answer for me. First of all, you mentioned the backlight being very adjustable, but is there an option for the backlight to be completely off? Secondly, is there a way to search through previously created notes? I'm a little confused on what it is capable of doing. If it can operate most android apps, it should be fine, but I'm unsure.
I'm so glad you found it helpful. Yes, you can turn the backlight off. As far as searching notes goes, I don't think the Boox has this, but the SuperNote definitely does. The Boox devices have full access to the Google Play Store, so any apps available there should technically work. With that said, not every app feels great with the latency of the eInk screen.
Hey! Thanks for this great video! I have been meaning to buy myself a remarkable 2 for quite some time, but recently I came to notice that it's really bad in terms of opening the epub files. More clearly, I heard that it won't open the epubs that are protected. I don't know what that exactly means but so far I have seen and researched, that would be the most of the epubs put there. So it basically doesn't open most of the epubs out there. This is a very important issue for me, therefore was a dealbreaker. I want to make sure that this device has much more accessiblity on the epubs, from your experience, is this the case? I mean, can I open any epubs that my Kindle opens? Thank you so much for your reply!
I have the regular Note Air2, and would like to share some of my thoughts about your experience. I chose BOOX because I miss the old Kindle 'Active Content' feature, and didn't want to be limited to a single e-book platform. (4:18) In my case, I often have to turn off all the contrast stuff, switch the refresh mode to normal or Regal waveform, then tweak the refresh rate, and drop the DPI to 220, but I adjust it for certain apps, like a higher refresh delay for reading apps where page turn animations can't be disabled, and in some apps that have graphical issues running at 220 DPI (like the official Twitter mobile client for Android), I have to set them to run at 240 DPI instead. I wish BOOX would allow users to change the default app optimisation settings applied to newly installed apps. If you want, I can share my optimisation settings for if we both have apps in common, as I plan to list my optimisation settings and set-up guides on a new website I haven't launched yet, and I could also send you photos of how some of the books I read look on the display (sometimes compared to the print editions), as I read a lot of illustrated fiction and comics. (5:12) For this, I use the official BOOX Pen2 Pro, though if I recall correctly, they don't have a colourway for that which matches the Note Air2 Plus. (7:47) Yep! In my case, I enabled Android 'do not disturb' mode, but tweaked the settings in a way that would allow me to see notifications if I go into the notification centre, but not see the actual Android notification icons, so the status bar looks less distracting. (6:26) You can actually reposition that toolbar, which is something I do a lot when sketching. Just tap and hold on any button, and drag. (6:49) It took me around 15 minutes of searching to realise that's Readwise Reader, which seems to be in an early beta testing phase, and in my case, I use Pocket, but a free account, and mainly because of its integration with dedicated Kobo e-readers, which I sometimes work with in my research. I do plan to eventually try Readwise, however my experience with it would be weird as I primarily read fiction books written with children in mind, and a lot of illustrated stuff at that, while I think Readwise is designed primarily for non-fiction, at least from what I can tell watching other YT users show how they use it in their videos. (7:08) Evernote used to offer a similar feature, but that went away when they completely rewrote all of their clients from scratch. However, I can get similar functionality using an Automate script that serves a custom notification toggle that, when pressed, calls the 'Evernote action' home screen shortcut that then leads to creating a 'simple note' or 'simple task' (simple versions so that I can create them without leaving the app I'm in). While it works, Automate won't let me set a custom icon for the notification icon, instead requiring me to use one of the icons the app provides, which I believe are from Android 4.x. Edit: I checked your other content and noticed that you do some stuff in Figma, which reminds me: I do sketch up UI designs on my BOOX before creating higher fidelity mock-ups in Figma, and as part of that, I also do thumbnailing of my UI design sketches, similar to what picture book (children's book) illustrators do.
Hey Kevin thanks for reaching out and I would love any tips you have! RE: Optimization settings I would love to see what you're running. This seems to be the trickiest part of the device and also the part that you never know if you've max'ed out what's possible. RE: Readwise it's great and has increased the incentive for me to read. I will say it has less value for fiction, but my wife loves getting Sylvia Plath quotes served back to her on a regular basis. Thanks again for reaching out! I'm brandonkboswell#6652 on Discord if you ever want to compare notes and settings.
@@BrandonKBoswell Yep! I can try to share some of those tips here as I won't be launching my book-related YT channel and blog until some time next year. 'I would love to see what you're running' As in, what apps I have installed? If so, I have a huge list of apps, but a bunch are for testing and research for that website I mentioned, and some are tools, but here are what I use on a regular basis, in no given order: - Kobo (my preferred e-book platform for reflowable text e-books) - Play Books (my preferred e-book platform for print-replica e-books, like graphic novels) - Libby (my local public library lends out e-books using OverDrive) - Storytel (subscription library, sort of like Netflix but for books) - Pocket - Kindle - Evernote - Milanote (via Firefox, but I plan to try using it through Hermit) - Firefox - Firefox Focus - Calibre Companion (I have a Calibre library on my NAS containing Humble Bundle and self-published books) - Tachiyomi - Hermit - Goodreads (running at 320 DPI as their Android app doesn't support tablets) - The StoryGraph - Wikipedia - The Free Dictionary (Farlex) - Dictionary .com - Pushbullet - Sony Headphones Connect (for my WF XM4 earphones) - Spotify - UA-cam Music - Phonograph (for locally stored music) - Termius - AndFTP I also have screensavers featuring some bookish imagery and some of my favourite illustrations from books I had read. I'm kbhasi#4837 over on Discord, but have notifications disabled as I'm on a lot of servers there, and I don't log on often as I'm usually too busy with projects. I forgot to mention that I found your video through 'GorillaPhysics' sharing it in a YT community post.

Nice video, do you know whether you can bookmark or file the notes to allow them to be searched for key words or titles? At the moment I am torn between the Boox and Supernote A5x. Thanks
I haven’t had much luck with the note search as it takes a long time to respond. I think it will respond eventually, but it is longer than I’m ever willing to wait. It seems like they don’t cache the text recognition and then have to regenerate it when you search.
@@BrandonKBoswell Thanks Brandon that was a super fast response! I am veering towards the Supernote, my main reservation is it has to be imported (I am in Wales). Have you any experience using A5 & A6 sizes and what would you recommend for work? Thanks once again :)
@@jonathanphillips5514 I would go with the larger one. That extra bit of space makes a big difference. I would love to know what you think of the Supernote once you get it. It was the other tablet I was seriously considering trying, but in my use case the backlight made the Boox the obvious choice for me.
Like the video Brandon, and I'm liking these devices that seem to fill a need for many. I have not liked drawing on an iPad so far. They are heavy and clunky. I made better sketches on my old Samsung Note phone! Hmm, would this be the perfect eink tablet for handwritten newsletters with sketches that I could save and use on a website, or email... as a jpg or png or??? I'll watch a few more of your videos now. The stylus is also very important as well as the feel of drawing and writing and the choices for different pen or brush effects, being able to zoom in to clean up an area and decent quality that exports well.... Any thoughts on that?
QUESTION: Would you be able to comment on or do a review of RemNote? It is a fantastic note taking app/platform but I not sure how it would work with an eInk device.
Thanks for the great video. What about battery life? I've read somewhere that if you are using it intensively (as a notebook, not for other activities), it lasts for around 4 hours. I know that PLUS has a bigger battery than the standard one.
Great video, enjoyed that, you've made lots of really helpful observations. Also, lots of people ask about the experience for left handers, any quirks to mention?
Hey GorillaPhysics. Thanks for reaching out and thank you for all of your videos. They were a major source of my research when deciding which tablet to buy. The left-handed experience is very good. I choose to flip the tablet upside down so that the pen magnets to the left side, but that is completely optional. The only quirk I have is if you use the tablet upside down there are a few Android apps that don't honor the Boox's orientation and they appear upside down, but those are few and far between. Thank you again for all you do!
Great flow to your video - enjoyed the review! Are you able to synch by cord to a computer to display what you are writing to others via stream…i use iPad with Doceri program currently but am searching for a better writing experience - thanks!
Hey there. My guess is this isn’t a perfect fit for that. The Boox has a 2 step render process. In the first step it writes your stroke to a buffer that you see on the device and then after a delay it renders it to whatever app you’re in. From what I understand your strokes only show on the screen share after that delay, so if you’re trying to have people follow along in real-time it can be a challenge. In my research the Remarkable doesn’t have that delay, so if this is your primary use case that might be the better device for you.
I take back what I said. I just tried it with scrcpy with the instructions here (www.makeuseof.com/tag/mirror-android-screen-pc-mac-without-root/) and it works really well.
@@BrandonKBoswell thank you so much for the response! Very helpful - still doing my research and your review and response helps a bunch!! Maybe I buy one soon 😁
Thanks for this. Question- I’m looking to use it mainly for handwriting notes. Do I need the plus? Would I be able to take pics of my current paper notes and upload to the device? Or could I do that with the regular Boox note? Can you do key word search to find things in your notes?
Only the BOOX Tab Ultra has a camera on the device, but you could take photos with your phone and send them to any of them. The Plus just has a larger battery, so assuming you find a nice discount on the regular Note Air 2 I would do that. They all have keyword search, but only for the things you write. I don't think they do OCR on images.
Hi Brandon. That was a good review. I just want to ask, can I use ebooks I’ve downloaded online? Like epub, pdf and mobi? Can I also write on them? Thank you
Very useful review. Thanks. Few quick questions, fi I may: Can my hand written long notes be converted into typed notes? Also, can I connect it to my laptop and drag/drop files or notes? Is it good for PDF reading? Thanks again.
I've loaded a few 100 page documents and I haven't noticed where length of document really matters. If anything page density/complexity of the active page is a bigger variable.
My biggest issue with the Supernote and Remarkable is that there is a lack of any kind of light. I find myself in broad day light still missing brightness I need to see the notes. So I then don’t want to use it as much. I wonder if this is my best option? Thx!!!!!
The Boox PDF viewer is great. For me personally, I realized that I liked the writing experience better on the reMarkable and have gone back to using a Kindle Oasis for nighttime reading.
How do you setup the Kindle App on it? Also, would you be so kind as to list the steps to adjust the Kindle font, contrast, etc as you discuss in your video. I bought the Air2 Plus for kindle reading. It arrives tomorrow and I’m really looking forward to the experience. Thanks. :-). Jim Askew
Hey Jim. It would have been difficult to explain with words, so here is a loom answering your question: www.loom.com/share/5363113910ed4ccd9276f4e059f4b30d
Thank you for the video! How easy is it to mark a page and then find it again during an academic discussion? I'm looking to read academic papers (PDFs), highlight passages, and add notes to passages.
This isn't a workflow I use (I don't read a ton of PDF's on the Boox), but the built-in NeoReader has an easy-to-use bookmark feature and then maintains a Table of Contents of all the bookmarks, annotations and scribbles. It looks like it should work well for your use-case.
You should def try the Remarkable pen with eraser. It also has a flat surface on one side, make it stick very well to the device. Downside is the ridiculous price 😮
please make a video of usage experience of Moon+ Reader app & ReadEra app in this android supported tablet. As these are the best ebook reader app on Android I'm really curious to see how it works on eink tablets.
Watching all these reviews about e-ink devices, I'm starting to realise there's no one single device that does everything perfectly. It's always a compromise, one way or another. So I'm guessing 2 devices is the answer here? One for notes and one for reading? A reMarkable 2 and a Kindle Oasis maybe? I already have an old tablet for media consumption which works fine.
Hi Brandon. Nice video. I am a student. Can you please suggest me a good size and good e reader for reading PDF textbooks, journals? is 10.3 inch good? Shoudl I go with color or B&W?
Hi Brandon, thank you for making this great video! I read a lot of research articles and like to make notes on them. How is this tablet for marking on pdfs?
I have watched your videos on the Remarkable 2 and the Note Air 2 Plus. Between the two, which do you think is the better one? I plan on mainly taking notes. Thanks.
Hi and thank you for this very good review. I have a question: it is possible to listen to music via Spotify in the background while writing (preferably with some Bluetooth headphones)?
I just tried this with Spotify and yes you can do this with Bluetooth headphones. Note that you will need to turn Do Not Disturb off to have headphone output, but this works great if that is a key piece of your workflow
Hi, firstly thankyou for these videos. My use case would be note taking and looking for a digital to-do list or method to organise my life to some degree. I'm drawn to the simplicity of the Remarkable 2 and paper like feel, do you think the remarkable 2 or this device would make for a better to-do list/note taking device that saves me taking lots of paper about with me everywhere I go?
@@BrandonKBoswell Hahaha, I'm more drawn to the remarkable 2. Cause no distraction (adhd and autism) so I think that would be the best route. Do you think a to-do list of sorts is possible with the Remarkable 2? I figure much like paper I could just bullet point some things out and remove, cross out as I go. Is there a calendar template that I could religiously add dates for upcoming essays into and just check to be aware of priority? I've tried using my phone and laptop but I end up getting distracted by other things.
@@GobboIsGood If you've tried paper to do lists with templates, and they work well for you, then this will be like that, but better. I personally use a digital to do list, but I know plenty of people who prefer paper to do lists and are highly productive.
Hey! Loved the review. I have a question. Given it's an android based system, can you install things such as OneNote? I have many notebooks on there, which I would like to be able to use.
Hi, Thanks for the video, which was very useful. I'm really interested in buying this for taking notes in my meetings. I have a pretty heavy meeting schedule and am fed with paper notes. Does this fit the purpose for me?
Hi Brendon, a very useful review, thanks. I'm looking for a tablet for writing short stories and keeping a travel log. Does this item have an on screen keyboard or does the user just write with the pen and convert into text? Thanks.
Dude .. This video was perfect, thank you! Earned a sub. Question: how big is it compared to the confidant? Can you take a picture of them stacked and side by side and slap it on imgur?
I write ... fiction, memoir, etc ... And I like to 0-draft with pen and paper. I need something that can reliably transcribe my handwriting. The remarkable and this pad looks interesting.
None at all. As a lefty, I think e-ink has way more value for lefties as we’re underserved by traditional pen and paper. I do flip it upside down so that you can anchor the pen on the left. (There is an orientation setting you can set to do so). Hit me up if you have more questions!
I bought a Boox Note Air Plus on Amazon and tried to use it with the included pen. I found the Notes app very non-intuitive, the conversion to text hit or miss and hard to place texts where I wanted them on the screen. The Kindle app was very useable and the backlight good, but that was the only thing I really liked about it. To me, Goodnotes 5 on my iPad with a Paperfeel screen protector, and a stainless steel tip for my Apple Pencil was similar to a ball-point pen or Uniball marker pen on paper, and the matte finish was better than Apple's oleophobic coming at reducing reflected light. I really wanted to love the Boox, but after 3 days of trying to figure out and get used to the software interface, I gave up and sent it back for a refund. Then I ordered a 12.9" M1 iPad to upsize from my 11" one, and hope to integrate it well with my MacBook when iPad IOS 16 is released shortly. Thank you for a really good demo of the Boox; I think you hit all the good points of it, and hope it works out for you better than it did for me.
Thanks for reaching out, Eddie. I totally agree that the notes app UX could be cleaned up. The first few days were challenging, but after that I've memorized where everything is. Boox could definitely take some cues from GoodNotes on UX (I instinctively two-finger tap the screen to try to undo, but it doesn't work. Oh, GoodNotes how you've spoiled me). I would love to know which nib you're using on the iPad, as I still sometime use it for Procreate.
You are joking right? The Kindle is a toy compared to the Boox Note Air. Kindle can don't a tenth of the things the Boox Note Air can do. "Non-intuitive", "hit or miss", etc. just prove that you don't have nothing of substantive to say about the Boox Note Air other than meaningless jargon.
Hey Brandon, would you be able to check if the Reading Ruler feature is available on the AIr 2 Kindle App? I am big fan of the feature for iPad and would love to know what it is like for the Air 2
The ruler feature is there, but it’s not a good experience due to scrolling feeling lame on eInk. If this is a key feature for you then I don’t think you’re going to like it.
@@BrandonKBoswell Thank you Brandon, yes I was having a hard time imagining how the ruler could be effective on a device that isnt designed to have the same smooth continuous smooth scroll as the iPad. Are you aware of any eInk device where the Reading Ruler works as well as it does on iPad?
@@cormac2203 I don’t think there is one that will feel similar to the iPad. Alternatively you could use a physical ruler or bookmark and that would work well
I would like a clear answer in that please, I have troubles in my eyes, and I like writing novels, but the E ink is actually Eye comforting for me. So the question is, could I use Note air 2 for writing an entire novel and turn it into a word doc easily? and does it support keyboard to make it easier to write?
Hi! Have you tried reading manga and comic books on these devices? The larger screen and light weight looks good but I am still on the fence between an e-reader and an actual tablet. Thanks!
If that were my use-case I would probably spring for a color device. Check out my video on the Boox Note Air 3 C. I did a comparison of comic books on that device vs an iPad
Brandon, if you were in a situation where you needed to write rather quickly, do you find that legibility remains relatively clear? I work in mental health and would love to get rid of paper, but I’ve tried conducting interviews and taking notes with my iPad and Apple Pencil, and the legibility is so different from pen and paper? Thanks for any response you can provide.
@@BrandonKBoswell yay! I will wait your review whenever it comes out. Hopefully mine ships soon! I think a lot of reviewers are forgetting that this is a Kindle reader first and notebook second. They’re reviewing it as notebook first and reader second.
would you please share thoughts if Im looking for paperless device which can allow me to upload my own pdf or take photo of my old notebook pages , and at the same time help to write new songs. And when I perform I want to read with back light and need search option to find any songs so indexing is important for even my pdf’s externally uploaded
so many argue they read on eink as the light is too much on a ipad or android tab..wel invert settings. i read on a dark brownpaper background.. light beige letters and its good readable in the dark and does not strain eyes.
You pose a great question. The Boox is definitely the hardest of the big 3 e-Ink devices to be distraction-free, but it is definitely do-able. Having used all three now for more than half a year, I would say you purchase the Boox over the other two because you need one of its distinct features like the backlight or the ability to run specific Android apps such as Readwise's Reader or your favorite To-do list to be able to capture to-dos that arise while reading or writing. If you don't need either of those things, then I think the reMarkable 2 or Supernote A5x make for better pure writing experiences.
Allow me to chip in, being a black and white tablet, makes it less attractive to use cared to a regular tablet/phone. It's like when you use the Google wellness functionality that turns your phone to a black and white device. I believe there was a smartphone oriented to being less distracting that had the interface mostly in black and white. Me myself I'm interested in e-ink tablets to focus on studying with a tablet and taking notes on PDFs. I personally hate studying with paper and PDFs (and prefer studying by writing down stuff), so I think that this types of devices would suit me + they are cheaper than a S8 tab or iPad. Excited to see how the Amazon one comes out, although I think it'll be more like the Kobo Elipsa
Hi Brandon, thx for the great review. What is the experience like on a pc, working with the handwritten notes you took on the Boox? Are you able to search for tekst for instance? And does it integrate with Onenote?
Hey Bart! Once on the computer the notes are effectively a PDF of vector graphics so I’m not aware of a way to search those. On the device though there is search of your handwritten content, but it’s probably too slow to be usable on a regular basis. They do have Onenote sync integration built into the OS, but I don’t use Onenote so I’m not in a position to comment on whether it is good or not
The device has access to the Google Play store so it runs the Android Tablet version of the Kindle app. Log in with your Amazon account and you're good to go. It works offline, so my guess is you just need to come online once every few weeks to keep your license active.
Please share your thoughts on the video and help me grow the channel by liking and subscribing. Thank you for your help and support!
@@BrandonKBoswell thanks so much for your super prompt reply! Best, Michael
Everything you mentioned is correct, but note that you no longer need a reMarkable subscription to use Google Drive.
Just bought it, too, and now I want you to make me feel good about it.

Nice video Brandon! I received my NA2P around the same day as you, and my experience has been similar. Same delights & frustrations. For me, it's a great device, a joy for note-taking and recording ideas.
Thank you for reaching out Geoff! Let me know if you find any cool tips and tricks!
Thanks for covering this. Very helpful. We are planning to buy some type of higher-end e-ink device, because they're finally really becoming more useful and not just an expensive toy device.
Hi may I ask, which ones would you recommend for creating black and white coloring books? Thank you.
I’m exploring ways to make that edge square, I just haven’t found a solution I like yet.
Thanks for the hint about disabling the DPI override. Much better.
Great review of the Boox Note Air 2 Plus! I was trying to decide between the Remarkable 2, Kindle Scribe and Boox Note Air 2, and your review was a major factor in my ordering the Boox Note Air 2.
Love my boox, it's much more open than anything else and works for me!
I recently lost my very beloved Onyx Poke 3 reader and want to replace it with something I can also use for journalling. This was a very helpful review. Thank you.
I've been using BOOX Nova 3. It's functional but I have concerns regarding the quality of components used. The battery died after 2 years despite the device being used only for about 2 hours a day (and turned off after each use)
Customers also report issues with a mainboard. The repair cost is steep ($150 mainboard, $125 new screen) + you also have to pay for 2 way shipping which is about $50 ( so the total cost 50-70% of new device).
I'm afraid that BOOX e-readers aren't built to last...
@@danield6056 that's handy to know. Thank you
Hey Brandon, I also have similar requirements, but I went with the reMarkable 2.
I see. I solved the pen erase button issue with getting a different pen. It is quite nice also
I would love to get a remarkable tablet, but I need web browsing for search. If only the remarkable had that

I was surprised that one of your strikes against the iPad was the “blue light at night”; iOS and iPadOS have Night Shift (Settings > Display & Brightness) that, when enabled, automatically shift the colours to warm tones at night.
Even with Night Shift there is still a great deal of blue light.
I have one coming in this week. I’m so excited to give it a try!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Brandon,
Thanks for this! Curious about your experience between the Air 2 and Obsidian. In what ways, if any, do you use the two together? Thx.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
❤️ Thank you. Yes you can.
Thank you!
Thanks for reaching out. I prefer the Samsung S6 Lite S-Pen. I use the white tip with it. More Boox videos are on the way.
Thank you!

Great review! I’m also having issues with clarity in my kindle app. Could you tell me specifically what settings you changed to fix it? Thanks!

Thanks! 😊
In an older firmware you can at least move the store from the sidebar, the most resent updates have it stuck there.
Fail. Any idea why they did that?
Have you tried Nova launcher on the Boox? Would you recommend it? I had this on my todo list, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Cheers!
Hey Brad, thanks for reaching out! Surprisingly, I'm not familiar with any apps like that.

Great to see reviews from a fellow lefty.
Hi Brandon
Thanks for video comparison.
I wonder if possible to highlight and translate to other languages and keep safe a new vocabulary? 🤔
Also want to ask if you now is possible to use for music or write mysic?
Rustem
Most of the tablets have templates for writing music. The translation I’m less sure about. I don’t think there is native handwriting to text + translate. Theoretically you could copy it to another app, but I don’t think the tablet has a clipboard.

I discovered on russian site that us possible and just one word but also the whole page and on top of that if you don't disconnect it will still translate(automatic translation)while you read...
With that said, not every app feels great with the latency of the eInk screen.
change the refresh settings for each app( kindle for example) to make the text a lot better . Choose "normal" mode for reading ebooks
Agreed. I personally prefer Regal Mode for Kindle
Hi Alican, I don't read a lot of epubs, so I can't say for certain. It is possible that ua-cam.com/users/GorillaPhysicsA might know the answer.
@@BrandonKBoswell
Yep! I can try to share some of those tips here as I won't be launching my book-related YT channel and blog until some time next year.
'I would love to see what you're running'
As in, what apps I have installed? If so, I have a huge list of apps, but a bunch are for testing and research for that website I mentioned, and some are tools, but here are what I use on a regular basis, in no given order:
- Kobo (my preferred e-book platform for reflowable text e-books)
- Play Books (my preferred e-book platform for print-replica e-books, like graphic novels)
- Libby (my local public library lends out e-books using OverDrive)
- Storytel (subscription library, sort of like Netflix but for books)
- Pocket
- Kindle
- Evernote
- Milanote (via Firefox, but I plan to try using it through Hermit)
- Firefox
- Firefox Focus
- Calibre Companion (I have a Calibre library on my NAS containing Humble Bundle and self-published books)
- Tachiyomi
- Hermit
- Goodreads (running at 320 DPI as their Android app doesn't support tablets)
- The StoryGraph
- Wikipedia
- The Free Dictionary (Farlex)
- Dictionary .com
- Pushbullet
- Sony Headphones Connect (for my WF XM4 earphones)
- Spotify
- UA-cam Music
- Phonograph (for locally stored music)
- Termius
- AndFTP
I also have screensavers featuring some bookish imagery and some of my favourite illustrations from books I had read.
I'm kbhasi#4837 over on Discord, but have notifications disabled as I'm on a lot of servers there, and I don't log on often as I'm usually too busy with projects.
I forgot to mention that I found your video through 'GorillaPhysics' sharing it in a YT community post.
How do you change the DPI? I've had mine for a few days, and am considering sending it back-I just can't get over how lousy the text renders in Google Play Books.

Great review! Can you please link the upgraded pen in the video?
Thank you, Joshua! My current stylus is the Samsung S Pen (S6 Lite) - amzn.to/3HCnGVN.
The plus does have a larger battery, but honestly battery life is great on these devices.

Thank you
Yes and Yes
Very useful review. Thanks. Few quick questions, fi I may: Can my hand written long notes be converted into typed notes? Also, can I connect it to my laptop and drag/drop files or notes? Is it good for PDF reading? Thanks again.
Yes, you can do all of those things
Brandon you are selling it too well hahaha, I might stop waiting for a Kindle Scribe
Thanks for the review. Have you worked with large PDF files? How fast does the page render and scale work?
I've loaded a few 100 page documents and I haven't noticed where length of document really matters. If anything page density/complexity of the active page is a bigger variable.
My biggest issue with the Supernote and Remarkable is that there is a lack of any kind of light. I find myself in broad day light still missing brightness I need to see the notes. So I then don’t want to use it as much. I wonder if this is my best option? Thx!!!!!
Thanks for a great video! how do you feel about reading PDFs on it and how do you feel about Boox now that you've had it for a while?
The Boox PDF viewer is great. For me personally, I realized that I liked the writing experience better on the reMarkable and have gone back to using a Kindle Oasis for nighttime reading.
How do you setup the Kindle App on it? Also, would you be so kind as to list the steps to adjust the Kindle font, contrast, etc as you discuss in your video. I bought the Air2 Plus for kindle reading. It arrives tomorrow and I’m really looking forward to the experience. Thanks. :-). Jim Askew

Yes!
@@BrandonKBoswell Hahaha, I'm more drawn to the remarkable 2. Cause no distraction (adhd and autism) so I think that would be the best route. Nice review, thanks! Are there any issues using it as a lefty?
None at all. As a lefty, I think e-ink has way more value for lefties as we’re underserved by traditional pen and paper. I do flip it upside down so that you can anchor the pen on the left. (There is an orientation setting you can set to do so). Hit me up if you have more questions!
I have the same needs when it comes to an eink tablet. Does this still check all of your boxes as the best option for your needs?
Would you be able to share what Apple Pencil nib you use ?

Can you share how scrib or medium feels like in onyx?
Thanks for the vid. With Android OS and all the apps, isn't defeating the point to be a distraction less device?
Can you share your thoughts on that?
