Thank you for sharing this. There are very few artists about whom you can really say: there really was only one... Callas, Kleiber, Horowitz. Holliger is certainly in that group. He was completely fearless about his artistic convictions and one of the very few wind players (certainly oboists) for whom there was never a gap between thought and sound. It's much rarer than you might think. Some people don't like his sound but to me there was always an underlying sweetness (which came from hitting the true centre of the notes every time) and the freedom he had with it was extraordinary. I remember the first time I heard him when I had just started playing the oboe nearly 50 years ago. I had some birthday money saved up and I wanted to find an oboe record. I found a disc of Mr H playing sonatas by Handel Bach and Vivaldi. I simply couldn't believe my ears. And of course he made it all sound so effortless, which anyone who has struggled with a double reed instrument will know is not the case. i have been hooked ever since and wish to say a big thank you to him for enriching this music-lovers life.
