    Ahhh, the taste, colour and smell of the sea and how it feels when you hit the water on a dive. Can't be explained to non-divers.

    this looks like one of the coolest jobs ever. would anyone be able to tell me what the work force looks like in canada? would it be hard to land a job in a field of work like this? I plan on doing SCUBA certification this summer. I use SCBAs all the time in the fire department but I want to try playing with tools under water as well now :)

    • @jaylord7343
      @jaylord7343 7 років тому +1

      The training and work force varies from continent to continent, some places (like here in Australia) require their students to be SCUBA certified first, I've heard other places take students with 0 experience. Keep in mind that most commercial work is SSBA (Surface Supplied Breathing Apparatus) rather than SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) and the skills involved are not always transferable, but pretty much everyone starts in either recreational SCUBA or Military Diving before going into commercial hardhat work.
      Most people grab their first gig inland in Aquaculture (salmon and tuna mostly) before getting an offer for construction and maintenance jobs offshore. but the industry is pushing pretty hard at the moment, so the transition time between offshore and onshore is shortening for skilled divers. Check out Canada's certifying agency (which is CDI if I remember correctly, I could be wrong) for more information and ring up a few dive schools, they should be pretty happy to help you out.
      One thing I will say, as an ex-firefighter myself, just remember that SCBA and SCUBA are, and should be treated differently from each other, some similarities exist, but they are inherently different activities. I like to look at SCUBA as an extension of SCBA, same principle with a few more thing to consider, same with SCUBA and SSBA, but there are plenty of people out there that disagree with me.
      One of the instructors at our local commercial dive school explained the main difference between recreational and commercial diving is that a recreational diver's main focus is keeping themselves alive, the focus is on the act of diving itself (At least at a beginners level) a commercial diver's main focus is completing the job assigned to him, the diving is the vessel that takes them to the work site.
      Just some food for though for you if you are looking to enter the industry, like I said, it varies everywhere you go, I personally found that most divers and companies where more than willing to answer my questions and share advice, I learnt much more from talking to people in the industry than I did researching on the internet.
      Best of luck to you!

    Once you are done with dive school, where is a good place to start looking for work

    • @browntrousersmoment
      @browntrousersmoment 7 років тому

      Nowhere, there are very few jobs in reality. Only about 4% of the students get jobs in commercial diving. Fun and expansive school!

      @@browntrousersmoment And where are you from? I hear many people saying it's hard to get a job and many people saying there are plently of jobs.
      It seems like a lot of people who says there are no jobs are either from US
      or
      Are only looking for in-shore jobs and not willing to move abroad.
