How I built a Tractor Cab for less than $1,200!

A couple of goals I had while building this Tractor Cab:
(1) No major modifications to the tractor (the only things I had to remove was the two handles on each wheel well, the cup holder, and toolbox. All where simply bolted on and easy to take off)
(2) Keep all materials under $1,500
(3) Maintain existing visibility from the tractor seat
Below are the materials and prices I used for this build:
3 - 1lb x 0.035” Mig wire ($25/ea)
1 - 4” x 20’ x 3/16” Steel Strip ($51/ea)
1 - 1” x 20’ x 1/8” Steel Strip ($21/ea)
5 - 1” x 24’ x 14ga Sq. Tubing ($32/ea)
1 - 1” x 20’ x 13ga Rnd. Tubing ($27/ea)
1 pack (2-count) - 4” Heavy Duty Weld-on Hinges ($25/pack)
1 - 4’ x 10’ x 1/4” Rubber Mat ($10/LF)
1 Gallon - Simple Green ($11/gal)
3 Cans - 15oz Rustoleum Primer ($10/can)
4 Cans - 12oz Rustoleum Gloss Protective Enamel - Charcoal Gray ($7/can)
6 - 3’ x 6’ x 1/8” Acrylic Plexiglass ($75/ea)
1 roll - 4” x 10’ x 1/8” Neoprene Rubber Strip ($24/roll)
1 box (400 count) - Hex Washer Head Roofing Screws ($47/box)
2 pack (2-count) - 10mm Ball Stuf Bracket ($8/pack)
1 pack (2-count) - 16” Gas Strut (60 lb) ($22/pack)
1 pack (4-count) - 8” Gas Strut (18 lb) ($20/pack)
1 Box - 1” Self Drilling Lath Screws ($14/box)
1 - 4” Black Steel Barrel Bolt ($8/ea)
1 - 2” Black Steel Barrel Bolt ($6/ea)
Subtotal: $1,075
Total (including 8.5% tax): $1,167
These quantities/prices will result in some surplus items (for example, while I only used one 8” gas strut, I had to pay for four of them). Also, some of the metal I had lying around, however I still include the price off all materials regardless if they were lying around or not (I had to pay for it at one time or another!).
From start to finish, it took me about 80-100 hrs to construct.
Nice job. On mine I used 1/4" for the windshield in case of rocks, broken straps etc. and 1/8" otherwise.
I have a Ck2610 and thinking on building a cab now. We get lots of days over 115F so might need to toss a portable DC air conditioner in there.
Excellent workmanship! I like how you kept the tractor’s integrity and made a functional piece of art for it.
Great job. You will want to fill in closer around the hood. While driving/plowing the wind comes in there bad. Foam tape will help over the hood. I used a pool noodle in bigger areas.
Yes, great idea! I was thinking either a pool noodle or tubular pipe insulation since it has those sticky sides to them along with some caulking as well. So far it’s been nice but these improvements are on my to-do list. Thanks for watching!
Great idea for a homestead on a budget
Great ,great job I am thinking of building myself a cab for my tractor that was a really nice design you did there ,have you seen any kind of small AC unit that would work ,I'm not having much luck finding the right setup yet ,baleing hay AC would be nice great video bud really nice work .
@@markstokes6075 I appreciate it. And I did look into them a little. I was thinking something that would work would be a rooftop AC system that you typically find on a camper/RV or even one for a 18-wheeler cab. But my concern is that the alternator isn’t large enough. I’ll be honest, I didn’t do a lot of looking into it but I need to. If you think of any good ideas I’m all ears.

Is the engine noise better or worse inside the cab
No, I really don’t notice an increase. I think if I were to seal the cab up it would help dampen the noise from the engine and the occasional vibration from the plexiglass.
