How do you let it focus on a starry sky on a moonless night? I am unable to. Tried the focus magnifier including yellow peaking color. It simply does not show peaking color on stars. If I focus it on infinity it is still unsharp.
Hi Nigel, Great video's! I really enjoyed looking at them. I recently sold my canon dslr and I bought a sony rx10m4. Much more convient to carry around during my trips. I am really surprised by the qualty of the pictures this 1 inch sensor produced, especially with bird photography were I need a fast focus. A question about astro photography with this camera: Did you tried to under expose the astro pictures by lowering the iso? The benefit can be that the dynamic range will be increased. The sensor seems to be more or less iso invariance....
really good to see you shoot again. I don't think (emphasis on think) that you should have left the D800. I still use my D00e, so I am a wee bit prejudice and cannot yet see why I should change except to go medium format. Here's to your pork pie!
Steve H - Hi Steve. Dropping the D800 was a big deal and I do miss it’s huge pixel count and amazing low light capability and the full-frame sensor, and all the enormous number of lenses, and the great bokeh I could get with them and.... LOL. But, I don’t miss the sheer weight and volume of the gear and having to make difficult choices of which six lenses I wouldn’t take with me up a 2000 ft mountain! One day, I shall be able to afford both ;-) Meantime, the RX10iv has many redeeming features and I’m enjoying the challenge of trying to get the best I can out of it. Thanks for watching.
I would highly recommend the Sony A7iii Not a cheap option at around 1400 pounds. But the best for astro work by far.Coupled with a Samyang 21mm F1.4 Amazing results...
Just stumbled across your channel and finding it interesting that you've gone from DSLR to Sony rx10 mkiv. Here's the thing I currently use an fz1000 and currently looking to upgrade to DSLR simply because I feel I'm missing something with the 1inch sensor, I have considered the rx10mkiv but lack of landscape vlogs with this camera failed to sway me. Now seeing your night photography image has made me sit up and think again.💪.
JustDuff - thanks for watching and commenting. I’m not familiar with the fz1000, but I have to say that the RX10iv is a very capable piece of kit. If I am honest, I miss the low light capability of the D800 for some event photography, but for landscapes it is just fine. If I need extra pixels, I can zoom in and put a pano together, but that is rarely needed given that most of my publishing is online. The smaller sensor is an issue for the star shots - blending multiple shots to reduce noise is more of a necessity than a luxury, and I’m less likely to be successful with night timelapses; but they have always been a bit of a lottery in the UK anyway. Overall, I’m happy with it, and especially with about a 8 to 10lb saving in pack weight when hiking and camping.
@@NigelBaileyPhotography I rarely go beyond 50mm zoom on the fz1000 which is also a 1" sensor so my thinking was to get a half decent DSLR and a good landscape lens. 🤔
Too bad you don't show any photos you've taken. I'm saving up for this camera, because I'm planning a trip to Iceland and I want to make pictures of the milky way and the northern lights if I'm lucky. But I wonder if this camera is capable enough for this purpose. Can you please tell me more about your experience?
Thanks for watching. There's a bunch of images from the Sony RX10 from about 16:30 onwards in the video ;-) these include a couple of night-cap light-painting shots. I would not purchase the Sony as an astro camera; but it's a great all-rounder and suits my photography for now. I bought an old Nikon D700 for astro, but still haven't had a chance to use it...
@@NigelBaileyPhotography thank you for responding and mentioning your photos at 16:30. Iceland is actually not the main reason for this camera, but the quality of my good old Canon 450d (in the USA: Digital Rebel XSi) is not good enough for modern day photography. So time for an upgrade! And since I don't want interchangeable lenses anymore, I was looking for the perfect allrounder and found this beast. But the sensor size of this camera makes me doubt a little. Maybe I should wait for the rx10 V and hope for a full frame sensor :) but there's little known about the successor of the rx10 iv.
Good to see you back Nigel. The RX10's are super cameras, I have a Mk1 and a pal has the Mk4. They can undertake just about every form of photography, but the issue is, and I think its unavoidable, that they are jack of all trades and master of none. They'll always produce good results but not great. I am a keen long exposure photographer and the sensor noise on the RX10 is horrible even at 30 seconds, yet I can take 16 minute exposure on my A7R with almost no LE noise. I feel you will end up back with a DSLR as you were thinking of during this video. You'll get it for astro, then may as well get a second lens for whatever and like topsy it will grow and you will be back to a full camera bag! As to whether to get a drone, I wouldnt. They are kinda fun and cool and for VLOGs take some good B-roll, but they are pretty much useless for stills, and with the anti-drone movement gaining pace and restrictions on where to fly them growing, they can become more trouble than they are worth. Just my opinion of course, but you did ask!
Joe Davies That all makes good sense Joe, but I’m pretty happy with the RX10iv for my current use. I’m gradually learning how to get the best out of it. I do miss the f/2.8 lenses with full frame combination when I want great bokeh, or for portraits; but I just stand further back and zoom in to get a similar effect. You’re right about the sensor noise. But, I normally left 6 of my 8 lenses at home when I had the big Nikon anyway - just too much weight and bulk. The video on the RX10 knocks the Nikon into the weeds and having, in effect, a 1200mm capability on the Sony is just stunning. There’s pros and cons each way really. Maybe, when I’m no longer a poor student I’ll be able to afford both!
Hi Nigel - I really like your relaxed style of presentation, and have enjoyed catching up on your vlogs, especially as I’m a recent RX10iv owner myself...If I can manage to take landscape shots a fraction as good as yours I’ll be a very happy camper!
please not another person with a drone on Dartmoor they are a nuisance and of course on Dartmoor youre not allowed to fly them ,but apart from that great video as usual look forward to the next one
I love this! ❤️
I'm getting this camera as soon as taxes come in. Your last photos of the stars are amazing!
Thanks for watching and for your encouraging comments.
A decent walk, camp and photography trip, you certainly got some great shots in and around camp especially the star shots .atb Dave.
Border Rambler Thanks Dave. The star shots were definitely the keepers on this trip.

Glad to see that you're back Nigel. You inspired me to start my own vlog, so welcome back.
Awesome, Loved the location.. Loved your preparation for the shoot.!
Ashwin Boricha many thanks - glad you enjoyed it.
It's good to see how you are getting on with your sony cameras! Great Video

Do you print (if so how big?) or just view on screen?
