    Should we turn today’s episode into a new series?! What would you rate these past projects on a scale of 1-10? 😅

      I would love this as a series!

    This was a fun video! "Investment" decorating trends (flooring, tiling, countertops ,cabinets, etc) cant be changed out like a pair of shoes so its so important to know you'll love it for more than a decade! With my budget i need to stay safe and be adventurous with the accessories

      Exactly! Paint can always be changed, but it’s those hero pieces that need to be scrutinized 😆

    The last room shown, was a 10 for me. The fireplace redo made such a big impact, and by eliminating the orange and using a subdued turquoise, for me, made the room relaxing for non-TV times, but still has enough energy for football watching with friends. Even the artwork that was used in the two previous homes looked brand new! I hope that by putting the fire box down lower, you were better able to accept a TV above it! 😉

      @@JulieKhuu I know! If you like it, stick with it! As a person who has hung the same large painting in homes since the late 1970’s (acrylic painting; modern river/skyline scene, done with a palette knife…NYC girl originally!), I’m actually speaking for myself! It’s in my small kitchen right now, which I love! I find a place for it, not as a challenge, but because I still find it interesting. The canvas was not prepared correctly, so there is some damage due to sound vibrations, as my now adult son is the drummer in a heavy metal band, which practiced at my house for years! I want to do it myself having used acrylics myself in the past, but I’m intimidated by the color matching ; beige-ish off-white, possibly ecru-ish! Damage is hardly noticeable, except by me!

    YES to making this a series! I think sharing your reflections on your past designs is a great way to teach us how to make better informed decisions, and it's especially interesting to get a feel for how design decisions hold up over time. Maybe next time you could share the projects you're most proud of?
    And it's so lovely that you and Dave have been friends for so long! Truly satisfying to have someone who believed in you when you were starting out and has continued to root for you since. Thank you for this video!

    Hi Julie, I would love to watch a video where you try to elevate existing furniture to make the home look better. Personally, I have my home fully furnished however I realized that everything I have is purely practical. I have a difficult time finding and choosing extras that would just be decorative such as end tables, cushions, vases, lamps, etc.
    Your work is fabulous! I wish I could afford hiring you 😂

    In the last design I loved the old fireplace It had so much more character than the newer one but that's just a matter of personal preference. Love watching Dave's artwork and aesthetic evolve from being a single bachelor to living with his girlfriend in a rental to buying their first home It was really interesting to see those pieces being moved from one dwelling to another and his aesthetic just maturing. That was probably a really unique opportunity for you to get to design a space for the same person at all those different stages in their life.

    I love to dee the evolution of the same client from one property to the other, see which piece you brought back from one space to the other, using some existing pieces mixed with new key pieces to make it work with the new space. This is what most people have to do in "real life"

    • @JulieKhuu

    Hi Julie. Loved seeing your past projects. You are definitely your harshest critic! Trends/ design colours change so much over the years so the end result was perfect for that time. I loved the dramatic bathroom floor! Regarding the TV above the fireplace many make the mistake of fixing it too high up and when sat down they have to look up to watch it. We installed ours in a similar fashion to Dave and didn’t want any wires on show. It’s good to see he won you round in the end!

    i am loving the self reflection on past designs and fully understand the difference between trends and design functions that are timeless. for me, it’s mainly the cost of what i could afford that dictated my initial apartment design but still needs a personal touch and bespoke hand picked options that fully reflect the owner as a homeowner which like you mention in another video that makes it timeless

    I like the comfortable look of the final living room, & the TV contrasts nicely with the brick, but the mounting still looks high, especially since none of the seating seems to recline (which would point your eyes up). I think they may have a slight downward tilting mount, which can help a bit. Could you have made the soundbar niche lower down toward the fireplace, or was heat a concern?

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  3 місяці тому +1

      Heat was a major factor since it’s a working gas fireplace. You need min 6”-12” of non combustible material surrounding the opening for code compliance. We cheated it a little to fit that soundbar. The tv mount pulls out, swivels down, up, and to the sides. I do wish we went with a hydraulic mount, but the client specified this himself 👍🏻☺️

    Hi Julie!
    I am amazed at the designs you did in your past work. The materials you used would hold up to today’s design schemes bc marble seems always to be desired. I know that you love marble. I think the bathrooms had beautiful lighting fixtures but I would have preferred them smaller and mounted on the sides of the mirror for complimentary lighting on the face. I have above mirror lighting but only bc I didn’t have room for side lighting. Also the side lighting is easier to clean because it’s lower. Otherwise those bathrooms will stand the test of time. As for the living spaces I think the owners need only change accessories to accommodate a new look. The wall colors are pretty standard. I agree about wallpaper. It can really add a dimensional element to a room that paint will never give you. Nice work. I would like to see more but not from so long ago. And the word hate is too harsh. What would you modify and why? 🥰🥰🐉Happy New Year!!🥂🍾🎉 to you and your family!!!

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  3 місяці тому +1

      The spec house already had all their electrical fittings in place or else I would have totally brought the fixtures down for symmetrical vertical sconces between the mirrors. Other than that, marble is timeless! Thank you for watching Margaret! Happy LNY! 🥳🐲🐉🎋

    • @youbetcha108
      @youbetcha108 3 місяці тому

      That’s too bad about the electrical work being done bf you had a chance to design the spot. But I get it. When I designed my hall bath I designed it for side sconces and had them in hand. The contractor was inept. But I just wanted the job done so I bought an overhead integrated led fixture which still annoys me!

      I use wall sconces in EVERY project- nothing dated about them, almost necessary in most designs! Decorate the walls that you see fit. There’s no right/ wrong number. Only “wrong” when you’re simply trying to fill space- not the best intent when it comes to design imo

The second bathroom I give it a 6, it’s basically a white bathroom that you can add color to with towels and accessories. The third room, the living room, I also give it a 7, it feels young and comfortable. The last living room, I rate it an 8, it’s attractive and looks comfortable.

    I'm really sorry but I don't think you were critical enough. I understand that you don't want to say bad things about your client spaces, as that would be disrespectfull and not smart bussines.
    1st bathroom : found the cabinet proffile very dated also the full mirror and mirror on mirror ,,wasn't a fan. window trethment and area round the bath was also a bit bah.
    2. bathroom: the one you scored the worse, I though was bestof allof them, in regards to the bones and elements, yes was a bit on the bland side, but anothing another layer of wallpaper and styling elements couldn't fix. I also don't understand why you are placingfacelevel lighting in thebathroom above? side placment is much better if thereis space.
