I think that most people on a plane who act like they're in a bus or s.th. really don't realize what is going on. :) You're sitting in an incredible machine with 120000hp of thrust wich catapults you in the sky as you take part in the miracle of human flight. hundreds of generations have dreamed about it, you can do it. It's just awesome.
That's honestly a really great way to look at it. We take such amazing inventions for granted. It's really a privilege to be a passenger of a huge metal bird really :)
Really BEAUTIFUL vid, thanks a lot ! I was here just 2 years ago, but was seated on the right side for take-off... More beautiful on the left side, as I can see !...
Fantastic ! Really loved this vid. Thanks for sharing. Been going to SXM since 1985 and never tire of watching the planes at Maho, or scenes like this from within the aircraft.
Great photography! I enjoyed you got the beach shot of beach goers ready to watch take off or fence surf! At 2:08 I got a little chill thinking at that point..."for God's sake, you fence surfers, hold on tight!!!!" A very nice take off, and some beautiful scenery at the end! Thanks!
Great video! Brought memories from my flight over 6 years ago. The feeling of acceleration G, fear/excitement. Nice feeling. I wish I took another flight somewhere.
Done it several times and it does put tears in your eyes, especially taxiing out then when first airborne, you see all the buetifiull things you saw on the way in, the way out sucks so bad. I'm always happy to be home after any trip, but the islands are a diff way of life, u just put shorts on n start your day, no one cares how u look, easy living, soon as u get back to the States u are in utter shock, especially landing in JFK or LAX, back to reality.
Nice. I always wondered how close planes get to those mountains at the end of the runway when initiating that quick right turn. Your video made me feel like I was right there to see for myself. Beautiful views of the water too. Thanks for posting.
Me encanto tu vídeo =). Muchas gracias por subirlo, no había visto un despegue desde el interior de un 747 y mucho menos desde St Marteen. Ojala subas mas vídeos para poder conocer el 747 por dentro. Gracias
Been to SXM twice, both times on an AA 757, took off like the space shuttle. I went to the Majo Beach and watched a few planes comes in, if u can jump high enuf u literally can touch the plane. Saw the iconic KLM747 land, impressive to say the least. I bet Majo Beach misses that 747, people would hang on to the fence as the Captain revved up the engines then fly 50 feet into the water. That's a nice Tourist attraction for free!!
Hi First of all, the 747 does not actually have slats. It has variable camber flaps and Krueger flaps. There are two speedlimits that might be interesting to answer your question: Flap Limit: 1 - 280kts 5 - 260kts so, "slats" retraction will abviously start before reaching 280kts
Awesome video - havent found many showing from this POV. Only been on a plane once ("con air" prison transport) so these videos are the only way I'll ever get to experience it. Still freaky to watch those engines bob around like they're attached with rubber bands! Though I know that's normal..
in a sense, it is... it stops in Curacao in order to get sufficient fuel to cross the Atlantic. They tank very little fuel out of St.Maarten, in order to keep the weight down, and thus get off of the relatively short runway.
@flyinghow 747's usually use more runway for takeoff and rotation. From St. Maarten, it is not a direct flight as it has to make a stop somewhere in between there and the destination, This means the 747 is underloaded and light meaning it can takeoff using less thrust and quicker.
Sint Maarten (dutch side) or Saint Martin (french side) is located between St Barths and Anguilla. Puerto Rico is about 35 minutes away by plane. The airport in this video is located on the dutch side of the island.
Flown in 6 times. It is my favorite island.Sailed to st martins on royal carribean 5 times.Flying in is much more fun.Love the bank right when taking off.
Looks like an interesting take off with a steep bank right soon after lifting off, to avoid those peaks. Disagree with skbenergy who says this is a shared flight with St Maarten and Curacao. I've flown with KLM from Amsterdam to Curacao and back several times. The flight to Curacao from Amsterdam is direct with everyone disembarking on arrival. Similarly, embarkation at Curacao is on to a plane we saw arrive from Amsterdam an hour or so earlier.
@seatgurus It is not a figment of your imagination. These engines have one or two compressor-turbine spools and one fan-compressor spool. Additionally, there are adjustable vanes between the turbine rotors to control how much of the energy in the combustion gases is directed at the turbine blades. Before full throttle, the pilot needs to be sure the compressor-turbine spools are spun up and stable before upping fuel flow and cranking on the vanes to get full thrust.
All planes immediately turn right after takeoff in St. Maarten no matter where they are going because there is a mountain directly in front of the runway. From someone who used to stay there every year

Anaximander29A You're so right! And the 747-8i has about 200k horsepower, it's insane :D
That's honestly a really great way to look at it. We take such amazing inventions for granted. It's really a privilege to be a passenger of a huge metal bird really :)
1 engine has 120000 hp ;-)
BritishAirways com wow! so 480000 then. :)
Anaximander29A Yes :D
This has got to be one of the best UA-cam 747 clips ever.
Absolute BEST take off video from St Maarten that I have seen. Perfect in every way. Now, all I have to do is get there once!!!! Bravo.
Ahh the sweet sound of the spool-up then TO thrust starting at 2:45..."GE, we bring great sounds to life"
KLM is for me the best airline in the wold i flew in 1988 and i enjoyed at maximun the experience. congratulations nice video

Really BEAUTIFUL vid, thanks a lot ! I was here just 2 years ago, but was seated on the right side for take-off... More beautiful on the left side, as I can see !...
The most popular airport in the world filmed from the most popular plane in the world. Fantastic video mate!
Fantastic ! Really loved this vid. Thanks for sharing.
Been going to SXM since 1985 and never tire of watching the planes at Maho, or scenes like this from within the aircraft.
A Paradise island! Seems like the pilots made a smooth take-off. Love the engine noise!!
Great photography! I enjoyed you got the beach shot of beach goers ready to watch take off or fence surf! At 2:08 I got a little chill thinking at that point..."for God's sake, you fence surfers, hold on tight!!!!"
A very nice take off, and some beautiful scenery at the end! Thanks!

i relly need to go there one day! st.maarten is so beautiful!
take off's at st.maarten are always incredible, above all with a 747. nice video, great filming and powerful sound, well done!
I just encounter this vid almost every day when scrolling through aviation video's: i keep watching it. never gets boring... :D
Now THAT's a good camera! Best quality and good sound...
This was one GOOD uploaded video!!!...Thanks for posting.
Probably the best video on UA-cam...
Absolutely breathtaking! Just wish it were another 5 minutes longer.
Absolutely stunning video. Great to see the views on takeoff!!
can't stop watching this take off !!!!
One of the best passenger vids I have seen! Well done :-) Comforting to see 2 engines on each wing when flying over oceans! BOEING RULEZ!
wow one of the best videos on you tube wish it was longer
How depressing it must be leaving that little bit of paradise behind and heading back to reality.
Very Very depressing, I was depress when I left Grenada and come back here.

Awesome vid from a great position in the aircraft. Looks a stunning place to go!!
I've watched this video because I love traveling but this video is great!
Very nice. Reminds me of flying in and out of Micronesia and the Philippines.. Seeing all those gorgeous shades of blue and green in the ocean.
Amazing video!! We would love to share this on Airliners Live if you allow that with credit to you of course :)
Thanks for this awesome video. I felt like I was on the plane with you.
Amazing.....best video of takeoff i have ever seen!
Nice. I always wondered how close planes get to those mountains at the end of the runway when initiating that quick right turn. Your video made me feel like I was right there to see for myself. Beautiful views of the water too. Thanks for posting.

Now I've just found the right place to go to vacation!! St. Maarten HERE I COME !!!!!!
funny how 1080p makes things in real life better than it actually is. I remember flying out of St.Maarten and it ddin't look as good as this vid.
I could sit and watch all through the flight...! :)
Great camera work; steady and well-positioned........a long long way from the Wright Flyer!
Nice Video. Have travelled from DUBAI to KARACHI (Pakistan). Now it scheduled I don't know but GR8 take off's & Landing's.
I would give away all my 41 videos for 1 video like this LOL. I have to get there next year - thanks for the inspiration. Cheers mate!!

The water is so blue and clear.....beautiful!
Excellent video. I love it and thank you for this.

I am a Airbus fan but i liked this awesome video!
P.S. I do not hate Boeing.
The best take off of my beautiful island St. Martin!
No sound is better than the sound a 747 produces :D
no words man..awesome short takeoff-run, flaps full for take off? :D awesome..
If you look very closely at the 2:54 mark at the number one engine, you can see the whole engine strain forward and up. AWESOME!!
St. Maarten looks like such a beautiful island. I wanna learn Dutch!! :P
Great video! Nice views from an air perspective.
in a sense, it is... it stops in Curacao in order to get sufficient fuel to cross the Atlantic. They tank very little fuel out of St.Maarten, in order to keep the weight down, and thus get off of the relatively short runway.
nicely filmed. good job.

Awesome video! Great view of Great Bay after take off.
Good video and excellent quality!
Great video from good seat. I didn't know a 747 could make a u-turn in the space at the end of a runway.
Great vid. reminds me of when I went on one of these to LHR-JFK

scary how the wings and engines wiggle at take off, still a fabulous aircraft, she will always be the queen of the sky !
