- This video was taken in the summer of 1980 at Flintstone's Bedrock City in Kelowna, British Columbia. You can see the water slides being built next door.
This entire thing was torn down sometime in the 90's, and there is a strip mall there now. Rumour has it that someone took the massive Fred statue and it's lying in a crop somewhere by the Kelowna airport.

I remember going to Canada, British Columbia Kelowna, to visit my Grandma & Grandpa, & ALWAYS went here & Old McDonald's Farm park too. Then off to the Oregon Coast, Rockaway Beach Resort for 8 days. I miss those days so much. I remember getting all my stuffed animals, & made permission slips for them to go. It was so fun.
I have lived in Rutland for 51 years about a mile from Bedrock City. I remember having BBQ's on a warm summer evening and if the wind was just right, we could hear the little train at Bedrock blowing it's horn. Thank you so much for uploading this! I wish there were more videos of Kelowna from that era!
This is so cool! I visited Canada in 1987 and we drove by this place. It wasn't open, but we stopped and took pictures over the fence. As a kid, I wanted to go in so bad, but even then it looked almost abandoned. So cool to see this video of what it looked like when it was in its prime.
My parents would take us there every summer until it closed. It's funny to think of how amazing I thought it was and how much I looked forward to it.
My family and I vacationed here in the late 70s and early 80s. It was a hoot! On the drive, I remember road trip games and reading novels. What's most amazing about this video is that the kids are out enjoying themselves with relatively low tech installations. There are no animatronics, light shows, video screens. It's all concrete and imagination. You'll also see a clear lack of texting and taking selfies. How times have changed!
I remember this trip and going there as the highlight of my year, and I thought those 'rides' were the best. We had a place called Dino Town near where we live and it was a similar set up. I took my kids once and they were bored! I agree, times have changed. This was a much simpler time.
This place was THE most important part of my childhood 0-6 yrs old. Tearing up a bit just to see it again thank you so much.
I remember that place ! used to dream about it all the dime as a kid. these kind of things just aren't around anymore
Memories....Used to beg my parents to take me there.
I remember goin here back then... childhood was great back then
Thank you for sharing
. Good memories. Nice activity for the family back in the day
Wow, I worked there for the summers of '81 & '82. Lots of fun!
My dad took me there when I was a kid
Charles Kj Horvath-Allan worked here at the end of May 1989.
Surreal.
it was lame!!!
you're lame
It was a gay old time..
Thank you so so much for posting this. My grandad used to be a gardner there when he retired just to keep him busy, he passed now several years ago. and when we would go to pick him up in the evenings as kids we would have free reign of the place. My brother and I spent much time here and sadly we dont have many pics of it, let alone and video. This literally made me cry, sad and happy tears. I remember ecerything you filmed even the scents of certain areas were brought back by this. Again thank you it means more than you can imagine
Wow this brings back memories, I actually made it here once when I was a kid. Was a great place!
This popped into my head as a random memory, so I googled it. This video brings back so many memories. There used to be boats, you could go into, and there was a show with Dino, Fred, and I think Barney. They did a routine to "Baby You Can Drive My Car" by the Beatles. I also remember getting a tonsil stone here! heh.
You knew you were there when you saw "40 Foot Fred" by the side of the road. Check out the satelite view of Kelowna and find Kelowna International Airport. North of the airport are some rings in the grass that form a big half circle. Zoom in along the straight side of the half circle at around the upper 3rd or 4th ring and you will see a white looking object beside a road. Zoom in some more and there's poor old Fred fading in the sun. His feet are up and his head is down.
I found him! Clearly foul play is involved.
I found him too!! That's hilarious!!!
You can still see him on the map!
This makes me want to cry! I remember my dad taking me here and the boardwalk and I barely remember it! Makes me miss him sooo much and how fun Kelowna was back then 💖
I was there around the early to mid 70s. Really loved this place ❤
I remember my parents taking me there when I was very young in 76 or 77, thank you for this video !
Great home video! I'm putting together a video on the history of Bedrock City - Would you mind if I use a clip from this (with credit)?
Sorry for the delay. Sure, feel free.
There were commercials for this on TV constantly. I always wanted to go, but never made it. Thank you for letting us all know it was torn down. I would've been tempted to try to find the abandoned ruins just to see what was left. Now I know that's not possible. Very helpful.
I just found an old family 8mm reel of our trip out to Western Canada in 1975 that included highlights from our stop at Bedrock City.
Found some Bedrock city pics in the family photo album this morning from a trip in 1979. So I googled Bedrock City and found this gem of a video. Thanks.
We lived in Kelowna when I was 3 (in the 1970s) and I have very happy memories of Bedrock City although in my memory it was Bedrock Village. I had a bowl with Dino on it that we bought there that I loved. Good times. Who needs Disney?
When I was a kid, this was my Disneyland. I've got a lot of great memories too.
went there in the mid 70's it was fun.
My childhood. 😢❤
Awesome! I went here once in the late 1980s, but it's so long ago I don't remember too much aside from the Fred & Barney head characters we met. And a big cut-out of all the characters, including adult Bamm-Bamm & Pebbles, whom I'd never seen before (as those episodes weren't airing much back then). I can't even remember what rides were there.
Thank you so much for posting this! Lots of great memories from this time with Bedrock City, The Flinstones and the Okanagan.
I remember being there in 1980 when I was 9 and living in Vernon, just watched this video with my 9 year old and even 30 some years later he thinks it looks pretty cool.
I heard stories about some of these statues being put in the lake
I have some footage of my family there in the early 90's. So sad that they shut it down!
I went here several times in the early 90's. I used to love coming here, and to the one in Bridal Falls.
Went when I was four. That was over 4 decades ago...
Omg I remember my mom took us here in the late 80s early 90s and if it wasn’t for this video I would have almost thought it was a figment of my imagination !! Love this !!
Saw commercials for this all the time on TV and always wanted to go, but was never taken there. :(
Oh my gosh... wow... my family vacationed in the Okanagan when I was a kid and Bedrock City was my favourite place! Thank you so much for posting this!
Lots of great memories there as a kid
Thank you so much for this post, it really was a special place for me. My favorite family vacations. Hurts my heart that it no longer exists, and my kids got to see Dinoland on it's last day of existence in Chilliwack. All gone. 😟
Wow
Haha! I had an old photo of me and my mom in Fred's car from back in the day...thanks for sharing!
I broke into that place so many times as a kid, hah OMG amazing footage. The Drive in was just down the road from here. right across from Baldy Mountain.
Awe thanks for taking the time to post from film! My parents honeymooned there in the 70's and it was our favourite family vacation spot. Remember the hot drives in the summer and the excitement seeing 40 foot Fred come up on the highway. Bought rubber skeletons in the gift shop.
I miss this place we had a lot of fun times there, there's no fun places like this in Kelowna anymore other than Scandia.
Hah! Thanks for this! I used to go there all the time with my grandparents, but few photos survived. :)
Thank you for posting! I grew up in Edmonton and moved East (TO) when I was just 10 but had visited here in the 80's and was recently trying to tell my own kids about it. Great memories :)
was looking for something completely different and stumbled on this . I went there in the early 80' s with my mom and older sister. completely forgot about it!
if they built that today it would be the same except everything would be wrapper in foam for safety
Great video wish my parents had a video camera it was all film back then 70's 80's got some pics though this place was cool growing up in Vernon BC we used to visit in summer the big city of Kelowna dont think the water slides around anymore either there was Atlantis waterslide in Vernon was awesome built on a hill anyone have memorys to share
Holy shit, this is it!!!! I remember going here as a preschooler. Still have a beach towel, with Fred Flintstone and 1996 still written on it.
Does anyone know the name of the strip mall that went up over the location?
It’s called McCurdy Corner. The exact spot where the Flinstones park was has an entertainment center and a bowling alley.
Woohoo was just a kid fun place to play its all a strip mall now ah the days of the theme park
Oh wow, I forgot that the dinosaur actually chewed while he was eating. That rules!
looks nicer then the old place in bridal falls
Polson Park in Vernon BC was fun for kids too
Aww man.. sad!
Awesome
Was this in Canada?
Yup, in the interior of BC.
@@ShellyWutke604 than became Dinotown?
Kelowna
We visited this theme park in the late 80s. I will never forget the experience. As a child, pure horror haha. Every single tunnel and ride had massive spider webs across them, one even had what I recall as a banana spider, living the good life presumably eating children. Never visited another theme park, and never will haha
